ur legacy of hospitality dates back to the late 1800’s when Midwesterners traveled by train to the Alexandria Lakes Area. Our early vacationers found lodging at luxurious lakeside hotels, casual fishing camps and some of Minnesota’s earliest resorts. It was in the Alexandria Lakes Area where they, and their friends, enjoyed cool lakes, refreshing swims and excellent fishing.
O
The Lakes Area offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. Our lakes are top producers offering some of the best multi-species fishing in the Midwest. Cyclists, walkers and anyone who wants to get a little closer to nature enjoys the paved Central Lakes Trail. In the winter months, the trail becomes part of a 500-mile groomed snowmobile trail system.
Today, Alexandria is a year round vacation destination offering travelers a wide selection of bed & breakfasts, motels/hotels, resorts and campgrounds. As a regional hub, visitors can enjoy a large shopping center, strip malls, big box stores, specialty shops, fine restaurants, historic downtown Alexandria, Panther Distillery and Carlos Creek Winery, an award-winning vintner.
More importantly, what made the Alexandria Lakes Area popular over a century ago still holds true today. Visitors comment how welcome they feel, and how much they enjoy the relaxing lifestyle.

Inspiration Peak Overlook
Alexandria City Park
Lake Carlos State Park, north of Alexandria on Highway 29, offers fishing, swimming, hiking, bird watching, picnic facilities, camping and horseback riding trails. Canoes and snowshoe rental is available in the park. The park naturalist provides a wide variety of programs for all age groups throughout the year, with some programs planned for Glacial Lakes State Park in Starbuck. In the winter, cross-country skiers enjoy its scenic groomed trails while snowshoers trek through the snowy woods and tamarack bog. Snowmobilers can tour the park via trails connected to the 500-mile Douglas Area Trail Association trail system. Lake Carlos State Park is one of Minnesota’s nicest parks anytime of the year. Visit the Minnesota DNR website for a complete listing of State Park programs. www.dnr.state.mn.us
One of Minnesota’s best outlooks is just north of Alexandria. Inspiration Peak, located west of Urbank, has an elevation of 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside. The quarter mile walk to the top is rather easy and rest benches are located along the trail. Those who make the trek are rewarded with an expansive vista of hardwoods, farmland and lakes. The scenery is beautiful anytime of the year, however the tapestry of fall colors can be especially breathtaking. Sinclair Lewis once called the view from the top at Inspiration Peak one of the most spectacular sights in the state and visitors today still agree. There is a picnic area near the parking lot. The site is managed by Lake Carlos State Park.
Located on a point between Lake Henry and Lake Agnes, City Park is a beautiful shaded setting with tennis courts, picnic tables, a bandstand, swings and shuffleboard. City Park also offers a public beach, complete with a bathhouse. The park can be reached by taking the walking/bike path at Big Ole Park.
Big Ole Central Park This park is easy to find in downtown Alexandria; just look for a 28-foot tall Viking statue on the shores of Lake Agnes. Big Ole Central Park serves as downtown Alexandria’s trailhead for the Central Lakes Trail. An information kiosk has a trail map, there’s off-street parking and restrooms are available. The Alexandria Farmers Market is held at the park several times a week during the summer and fall.

Successful Anglers - Late 1800s by DuWayne Paul (pictured at left)
hen I first moved to Alexandria in 1984, my fishing experience was bluegills and crappies. I didn’t have a good idea about how to fish bass, northern pike, muskies, or walleyes. Over the past 30 years, I have come to learn how to fish these species, but not nearly as well as the best fishermen and guides in the area. I am a recreational fisherman, and most of the visitors to the Alexandria Lakes Area are just that. Like me, they enjoy being on the water and trying to catch some fish. If I don’t catch much on any particular outing, that’s okay. That’s why they call it ‘fishing’ and not
W
‘catching.’ So, here are a few tips for visitors (and area residents) who like to fish but don’t have a good idea how to start fishing the Alexandria area First of all, make it simple to start with--decide what you want to fish for. And the best way to simplify that is to rely on ‘local knowledge’ as best you can. The easiest and simplest source of local knowledge is a trip to Christophersons Bait on 3rd Avenue in Alexandria. The shop has been around for decades and the folks working there are knowledgeable and helpful. If you have your own equipment, they can help you with how to use it and recommend things to use with it. If you don’t have any equipment, there is lots to choose from for both the novice and the expert fisherman. Also, get some lake maps if you don’t have a GPS for the water as knowing the contour of the lake bottom is helpful. Next, if you can afford it, try to use a local guide to get you started. Christophersons Bait and the resorts in the area all know of and can rec-
ommend guides for any type of fishing you desire. Learn and remember from the guide you hire, and then try those techniques on your own from that point forward. If you are a family vacationing here and want to try fishing with younger children, be aware of some things. Personally, I love to see kids out fishing. I took my own kids fishing by the time they were five years old; but you have to realize that kids get bored quickly. So, you should design your fishing outing with them so that there are things to do and that means fish to catch (and lots of snacks!). It doesn’t matter what they are or how big they are--kids just like to pull something out of the water and see the results of their efforts. My suggestion would be to start out trying to catch basic pan fish (bluegills and
Lake Victoria fishing pier

crappies). This takes the simplest equipment and bait, and pan fish are the easiest fish to find and to catch. It is basically a rod and reel, a slip bobber, a hook, some weight, and worms or minnows. Fish in and around the weed beds in 5-10 feet of water, about 2-3 feet off the bottom, almost any time during the spring, summer, or fall, and you will find success. Use your lake map or GPS and then find the weed beds by eyesight. If you don’t have a boat, there are piers in the area to fish from--just ask around. You can also fish from shore, but consult your lake map first to find the proper depth area and weed beds.
If you would like to fish for bass, walleye, northern pike, or muskies, it will take more time and knowledge of the area, equipment, and fish habits - as well as fish patterns. Again, rely on local knowledge and get some good advice on equipment. Then read books on the species you are after. Also, there is a wealth of knowledge on the internet about fishing techniques. From there, the best learning technique is experimentation and “time on the water”. Have fun and I hope to see you on the water sometime. About the Author: DuWayne Paul is an avid angler and outdoorsman. There’s probably not an area lake he hasn’t fished over the years. He writes the editorial column,” I’m Just Say’in”, for the Echo Press Newspaper

Live year round where you like to vacation ow home to over 36,000 residents and over 1,000 growing businesses, the Alexandria area has recently been named one of the “Top 10 Best Small Towns” in the United States. As people across the country are in search of authentic communities with unique atmospheres, there is truly no other place like the Alexandria region.
N
There are several key factors contributing to the region’s long-term vitality including a wide variety of stable and growing employers, strong education and healthcare systems, and high quality natural resources including lakes, parks, rivers, trails, and woodlands. Douglas County also has a large labor force that is growing in all age groups, and while there is a significant projected increase in workforce members’ age 65 and older, Douglas County is also projected to see an increase of workers age 25 to 64. The total Douglas County labor force is projected to increase by 18% before 2035. This will likely result in increased housing demands and a need for additional support and convenience businesses
Alexandria Lakes Area has several leading industry clusters. Education As Douglas County’s third largest employer, School District 206 educates approximately 4,000 students annually from a significant portion of the County. Other school districts providing K-12 education to Douglas County residents include Brandon-Evansville, Osakis, West Central Area, and Parkers Prairie independent districts. In addition, we are home to the nationally acclaimed Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) that currently serves over 4,000 students annually. ATCC is a member college of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and now offers the Associate in Arts (AA) two-year degree that can be completed right here in Alexandria.
Healthcare Douglas County is home to a growing healthcare sector; including primary, general and specialty care providers. A wide (and continually broadening) variety of elective procedures, long-term care options, senior care, dental, chiropractic, natural/homeopathic and other supporting healthcare services are also available
throughout the region. The Douglas County Hospital is a state-of-the-art acute care hospital that serves approximately 150,000 people throughout West Central Minnesota. The hospital has been named one of the nation's Top 100 Hospitals based on best performance across the whole hospital in the areas of: patient outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, efficiency and financial stability. Douglas County Hospital recently completed a 31 million dollar facility expansion that positions the organization to meet the projected population growth and increased healthcare needs of the region for the next 30-40 years.
Manufacturing The Lakes Area is home to a thriving and diverse group of manufacturers who serve customers throughout the world. Their products include packaging machines specializing in automation/motion control, aluminum extrusion, food product packaging, plastic injection molding, machining and others. The strong economic base that these businesses create serves as a catalyst for innovation and economic stability throughout the greater Alexandria area.

he 55-mile long Central Lakes Trail stretches from Osakis to Fergus Falls. The picturesque trail is built on an abandoned railroad bed that is paved, smooth and flat. The scenic corridor is ideal for cyclists, walkers, runners, and in-line skaters. It is closed to motorized traffic, with the exception of snowmobiles in the winter months. Much of the Central Lakes Trail is away from highway noises, making for a quiet ride with a limited number of crossings. This is particularly good for a family with children. The scenic trail meanders through rolling countryside, hardwoods, wildlife areas, farmland, over bridges, and past area lakes and streams. Wildflowers are a common sight and Yellow Lady Slippers are often spotted near Garfield. There are several small communities along the trail that are only six to eight miles apart, so riders are never far from services. Many towns have restaurants and convenience stores where riders can stop for ice cream treats, refreshments or lunch. Restrooms and picnic shelters are also available. A leisurely ride from Alexandria to Garfield, or Osakis is about 16 miles roundtrip. Early risers can journey from Alexandria to the outlying communities for breakfast in one of the local cafes, catching the sunrise along the way. On morning or evening rides it is not unusual to see wildlife such as ducks, pheasants, whitetail deer and fox.

SKI BOARD CROSS-COUNTRY SNOW TUBE •
•
Andes Tower Hills is located in the glacially cut hills of Kensington, just 15 miles west of Alexandria. 16 downhill runs, three chairlifts, snow tubing, cross-country ski trails, pro shop, snack bar, and rental shop says a lot about Andes Tower Hills, but we are not done yet. A newly expanded terrain park awaits the snowboard enthusiast. Andes’ runs will challenge the expert skier, and be friendly to the first timer as well.
Three chairlifts help reduce your wait in the lift line, so you can spend more time on the slopes. If you do not like to ski, or board, then try snow tubing. Andes will give you a lift to the top and let you ride your tube to the bottom on one of their five runs groomed specifically for snow tubing. Cross-country skiers will enjoy 15 kilometers of cross-country trails that traverse the picturesque countryside. Andes Tower Hills is located on the DATA snowmobile trail system making it a popular stop for lunch or snacks.
The Ice Fishing Challenge draws huge crowds.

Healthcare & Wellness Caring for our residents and visitors is important to us. Douglas County is home to a diverse and growing healthcare sector. This includes primary, general, and specialty care providers. A wide (and continually broadening) variety of elective procedures, longterm care options, senior care, dental, chiropractic, natural/homeopathic and other supporting healthcare services are also available throughout the region.
Douglas County Hospital & Alexandria Clinic The Douglas County Hospital is a 127 bed, state-of-the-art, acute care hospital that serves the greater West Central Minnesota and surrounding area. The hospital completed a 31 million dollar facility expansion in 2010 that positions the organization to meet the projected population growth and increased healthcare needs of the region for the next 30-40 years.
In 2012 the Alexandria Clinic became a service of Douglas County Hospital through an integration of the two organizations. This merger, along with Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, brings three community based service providers under one umbrella. With over 50 providers and expertise in 11 specialties, this merger will make them one of the state’s largest integrated community healthcare providers. The hospital has been named one of the nation's Top 100 Hospitals based on best performance across the whole hospital in the areas of: patient outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, efficiency and financial stability.
Sanford Health – Broadway Clinic Sanford Health is an integrated health system headquartered in the Dakotas and is now the largest rural, not-for-profit health care system in the nation with locations in 126 communities in eight states. In addition, Sanford Health is in the process of developing international clinics in Ireland, Ghana, Israel and Mexico. Sanford Health includes 35 hospitals, 140 clinic locations and nearly 1,200 physicians in 70 specialty areas of medicine. With more than 25,000 employees, Sanford Health is the largest employer in North and South Dakota. The system is experiencing dynamic growth and development in conjunction with Denny Sanford's nearly $700 million in gifts, the largest ever to a health care organization in America. These gifts are making possible the implementation of several initiatives including global children's clinics, multiple research centers and finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and breast cancer. In 2012, Broadway Medical Center of Alexandria and its 30 providers in 11 specialty areas joined the Sanford Health family.
