Alexandria Minnesota Lakes Area Official 2012 Visitors Guide

Page 1

ur legacy of hospitality dates back to the late 1800’s when Midwesterners traveled by train to the Alexandria Lakes Area. Our early vacationers found lodging at luxurious lakeside hotels, casual fishing camps and some of Minnesota’s earliest resorts. It was in the Alexandria Lakes Area where they, and their friends, enjoyed cool lakes, refreshing swims and excellent fishing.

O

The Lakes Area offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. Our lakes are top producers offering some of the best multi-species fishing in the Midwest. Cyclists, walkers and anyone who wants to get a little closer to nature enjoys the paved Central Lakes Trail. In the winter months, the trail becomes part of a 500-mile groomed snowmobile trail system.

Today, Alexandria is a year round vacation destination offering travelers a wide selection of bed & breakfasts, motels/hotels, resorts and campgrounds. As a regional hub, visitors can enjoy a large shopping center, strip malls, big box stores, specialty shops, fine restaurants, historic downtown Alexandria and Carlos Creek Winery, an award-winning vintner.

More importantly, what made the Alexandria Lakes Area popular over a century ago still holds true today. Visitors comment how welcome they feel, and how much they enjoy the relaxing lifestyle.

If you are a history buff, don’t miss the Runestone Museum & Fort Alexandria (home of the famous Kensington Runestone), the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and Senator Knute Nelson’s restored residence, now home to the Douglas County Historical Society.

Alexandria Lakes Area… A Fishing Destination Since 1879

The arrival of passenger train service to Alexandria in 1879 opened the entire region. Most visitors focused on outdoor activities and it wasn’t long before Alexandria’s bountiful lakes were heralded as “Minnesota’s Bass Fishing Capital”. Back then the bass was king! Bass were plentiful and anglers loved catching, as well as eating them. Vintage photographs show the smiling anglers with large strings of trophy-sized bass posed on the shores of area’s lakeside hotels. The northern pike, sunfish and crappies were also popular. The walleye was only found in limited numbers throughout the region. Fast-forward to today and much has changed, and many anglers would say for

the better. The Minnesota DNR classifies the lakes in the Alexandria area as mesotrophic. Mesotrophic lakes have medium nutrient levels making them an ideal home to sport fish such as walleye, small and large mouth bass, crappies, panfish, muskie and northern pike. The Minnesota DNR stocks many of the area lakes and local clubs, like the Viking Sportsmen (www.vikingsportsmen.org), annually contribute millions of walleye fry to area lakes. Dana Freese of Christopherson Bait, has been on every fishable lake in the Alexandria Lakes Area. “This is a great area for multi-species fishing and it’s one of the few area’s where you can reasonably expect to catch walleyes, bass, northern pike, and muskie, as well as some really good panfishing,” Freese commented. “Pretty much whatever you want to fish for is around here.” The walleye has dethroned the bass, as many prefer its mild flavor, but make no mistake about it, bass fishing in the

Alexandria Lakes Area is still very popular and rewarding. Freese has fished bass on Mexico’s famous Lake El Salto and has high praise for Alexandria. “The best fishery we have is bass,” states Freese. “It’s as good as anything in the world for numbers and average size. There’s nowhere better!” Hard water fishing can be very productive. According to Freese, walleye fishing can be fairly good in the evening from when anglers can safely get out on the ice until early January. The rest of the winter anglers fish for crappies and panfish. Contact the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce for information on icehouse rentals at area resorts. Visit the Department of Natural Resources' website (www.dnr.state.mn.us), and click on the "Lake Finder" link, for data on any Minnesota lake. The Vikingland Sportsmen Club has stocked area lakes with over 611,000 pounds of walleye fingerlings since 2008.

ow home to over 36,000 residents and over 1,000 growing businesses, the Alexandria area is one to the fastest growing micropolitans in Minnesota. Several key factors contributing to the region’s long-term vitality include a wide variety of stable and growing employers, a strong educational and healthcare system, and high quality natural resources including lakes, parks, rivers, trails, and woodlands.

N

The Douglas County labor force is growing in all age groups unlike other areas of greater Minnesota. While there is a significant projected increase in workforce members’ age 65 and older during the coming years, Douglas County is also projected to see an increase of workers age 25 to 64. The total Douglas County labor force is projected to increase by 22%, to 23,850 workers, from 2005 to 2035. This will likely result in increased housing demands and a need for additional support and convenience businesses.

Alexandria Lakes Area has several leading industry clusters. Education As Douglas County’s second largest employer, School District 206 educates more than 4,000 students annually from a significant portion of the County. Other school districts providing K-12 education to Douglas County residents include Brandon, Evansville, Osakis, Lakes Area Charter School, West Central, and Parkers Prairie independent districts. In addition, we are home to the nationally acclaimed Alexandria Technical and Community College that currently serves over 4,000 students annually. Alex Tech is a member college of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and now offers the Associate in Arts (AA) twoyear degree that can be completed right here in Alexandria.

Healthcare Douglas County is home to a growing healthcare sector, including primary, general and specialty care providers. A wide (and continually broadening) variety of elective procedures, long-term care options, senior care, dental, chiropractic, natural/homeopathic and other support-

ing healthcare services are also available throughout the region. The Douglas County Hospital is a state-of-the-art acute care hospital that serves approximately 150,000 people throughout West Central Minnesota. The hospital has been named one of the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals based on best performance across the whole hospital in the areas of: patient outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, efficiency and financial stability. Douglas County Hospital recently completed a 31 million dollar facility expansion that positions the organization to meet the projected population growth and increased healthcare needs of the region for the next 30-40 years.

Manufacturing The Lakes Area is home to a thriving and diverse group of manufacturers who serve customers throughout the world. Their products include packaging machines specializing in automation/motion control, aluminum extrusion, food product packaging, plastic injection molding, machining and others. The strong economic base that these businesses create serves as a catalyst for innovation and economic stability throughout the greater Alexandria area.

SKI BOARD CROSS-COUNTRY SNOW TUBE •

Andes Tower Hills is located in the glacially cut hills of Kensington, just 15 miles west of Alexandria. 16 downhill runs, three chairlifts, snow tubing, cross-country ski trails, pro shop, snack bar, and rental shop says a lot about Andes Tower Hills, but we are not done yet. A newly expanded terrain park awaits the snowboard enthusiast. Andes’ runs will challenge the expert skier, and be friendly to the first timer as well. Three chairlifts help reduce your wait in the lift line, so you can spend more time on the slopes. If you do not like to ski, or board, then try snow tubing. Andes will give you a lift to the top and let you ride your tube to the bottom on one of their five runs groomed specifically for snow tubing. Cross-country skiers will enjoy 15 kilometers of cross-country trails that traverse the picturesque countryside. Andes Tower Hills is located on the DATA snowmobile trail system making it a popular stop for lunch or snacks.

Snowmobiling… as good as it gets in Minnesota The Douglas Area Trails Association (DATA) maintains 368 miles of snowmobile trails in Douglas County. The scenic trail system

winds its way through west central Minnesota’s Hardwood Hills and River Prairie landscape. The diverse landscape of prairie, woods and lakes, the result of receding glaciers, provides a variety of riding experiences and some spectacular views. Every community in Douglas County is connected to the trail so you are always near lodging, restaurants and fuel stops. 36 miles of the system include the blacktopped, multi-use Central Lakes Trail that connects to Fergus Falls to the north, and St. Joseph to the south. The DATA trail system is open for snowmobile use only from December 1st to March 30th (snow conditions allowing). Visit the website for grooming schedules, trail conditions and a variety map options. Contact the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce for information or visit the DATA website www.douglasareatrails.com

Ice Fishing Ice fishing is an ever-growing sport in Minnesota. During the summer the Alexandria Lakes Area is home to lakes full of fish. In the winter the fish are still there, just waiting for anglers to test their skill. High-tech gear has made the fishing on the ice more inviting, and productive, than ever. Those who prefer a little more comfort may consider renting a cozy icehouse at one of the area resorts.

Other Winter Fun Carlos Creek Winery, Minnesota’s largest winery, is open year round. They offer tours, tasting, and a very unique experience…dog sled rides. It’s a thrill to ride with an experienced musher as his eager team of dogs transport visitors on trails through the picturesque vineyard. For more information call Carlos Creek Winery at 320-846-5443, or online at www.carloscreekwinery.com. Lake Carlos State Park is open for the winter. It’s snowmobile trails are connected to the DATA trail system. Cross-country skiing is available on groomed trails, and adventurous visitors can snowshoe throughout the park, except on groomed trails. A state park permit is needed for admission.

Many Winter Lodging Options to Choose From You will find a wide variety of lodging options available in the Alexandria Lakes Area. Motels, bed and breakfasts and many resorts are available to our guests in all price ranges and with a variety of amenities. Visit the lodging section of this guide for more information.
