BAKERY Roers Family Bakery 320-763-4741 430 Broadway St., Alexandria Roers Family Bakery is truly a family-run business, and has been since the Roers took over ownership in 1995. However, for owner Rory Roers, the tradition of providing delicious baked goods to the people of

Alexandria dates back to 1978, when he first started working at the bakery. Their striving to provide quality, old-fashioned products at an affordable price earned them the title of Best Bakery in the area. “Being sweet to you is our business” is their motto and they truly enjoy it. “The customers are the funnest part of the business,” owner June Roers said. “You do the best you can for them

and cooperate with what the customers are looking for.” The Roers are always trying out new recipes and testing them with the public to see what sticks. Roers Family

Bakery serves customers looking for baked goods for everything from special events to a mid-morning treat.

an increase in production, distribution accounts and staff. It also expanded its Oletoberfest event this past year to include partnerships with the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties and other local area businesses. “We could say we might slow down, but looking to the future it looks like we’ll just keep growing,” say the owners.

Gibbons and Graf, by the way, are natives of the Alexandria area, having graduated from high school here. They started homebrewing together several years ago and dreamed of opening a brewery in their hometown. Now it’s a reality.

Copper Trail Brewing Company 320-219-6688 410 30th Avenue East, Suite 103, Alexandria www.coppertrailbrewing.com

“No matter where you are on your journey, Copper Trail Brewing is a place for you to come and enjoy great craft beers made right here in the Alexandria area.” That’s the mission statement of the winner of the Best Craft Beer in the Alexandria Lakes Area – Copper Trail Brewing. The business began in 2016 and now includes 10 employees. “We think we were chosen because we really try hard to make sure our customers have a positive experience when they stop into the taproom,” said co-owners Dave Gibbons

and Adam Graf. “Also, we try to come up with new and unique craft beers for everyone to enjoy.” The taproom is open seven days a week for people to come in to taste and enjoy the beers. It also offers live music and pizzas in the taproom throughout the year and food trucks seasonally. The brewery also distributes its beers to local bars, restaurants, and liquor stores around the area. Since its opening two years ago, Copper Trail has made a number of changes, including

Caribou Coffee

320-763-8090 307 North Nokomis Street Suite 113, Alexandria The company’s story from their Facebook page: At Caribou Coffee, we believe this to be true: that if passion, hard work and excellence go into an endeavor, the outcome will be a quality experience, and therefore rewarding. In 1990, during an adventure through the Alaskan wilderness, our founders journeyed to the top of Sable Mountain. After a strenuous climb, they reached the summit and were rewarded with a sensational view: the boundless mountains, a clear blue sky, and a herd of caribou thundering through the

valley. That was truly the “aha” moment. The breathtaking panoramic view became the entrepreneurial vision for Caribou Coffee – a company that believes excellence is a product of hard work, and that life is too short for anything else. This vision serves as a guide as we strive to create a special experience for you here at Caribou Coffee. Now, we invite you as our guest along this path. Enjoy a moment, or several, filled with the highest-quality coffee and our unparalleled service.

FAST FOOD Culver’s

“Every guest who chooses Culver’s leaves happy” 320-763-2266 610 50th Ave. W., Alexandria www.culvers.com/ restaurants/alexandria Since February 2003, customers have been coming in droves to enjoy a fast but tasty bite at Culver’s Restaurant in Alexandria. What’s the attraction? “Our reputation for deliciousness!” said Breanna

Dokka, owner. “We cook every ButterBurger to order and craft every batch of Fresh Frozen Custard throughout the day. Our team also makes our restaurant very special, with their contagious smiles and genuine hospitality.” The restaurant has 34 team members preparing and serving the food. A fact not every customer may know about Culver’s: It offers a different flavor of custard each day, along with its famous vanilla and chocolate.

HAPPY HOUR, CATERING Raapers Eatery and Ale 320-763-2337 506 Broadway St., Alexandria www.raapers.com www.facebook.com/pg/raaperseateryandale If you’re looking for the best Happy Hour in town, why not start with the original? “This has been the same Happy Hour since we started in 1996. We’re the original Happy Hour in town,” owner Andy Rassat said. Andy and Cammie Rassat have been serving Alexandria through their business, Raapers Eatery and Ale, for over two decades and the people have spoken. Raapers was voted Best Happy Hour and Best Catering in the area.

14

“Our catering has really taken off,” Rassat said. “Catering is really fun for everyone. We love to do it.” But they certainly aren’t neglecting their in-house Raapers experience. This past year they’ve done interior renovations to their dining room and they’re currently updating their back bar. They change up their menu at least twice a year, just to keep things fresh for their customers. With 26 beers on tap that are always changing, you’ll have plenty to choose from during the original Happy Hour.

SANDWICH SHOP Jimmy John’s

“Where fresh and fast meet.” 320-762-8911 4617 Highway 29 S., Alexandria www.jimmyjohns.com In the 35 years since opening its first restaurant in a garage in Charleston, Illinois, Jimmy John’s has added nearly 3,000 locations, including one in Alexandria in 2007. The local franchise offers delivery right to your door and catering options for any occasion. It has Mini Jimmys, Party Platters, Box Lunches

and tasty side items for an office lunch, a group event or last-minute meeting. At Jimmy John’s, the sandwiches are fresh and made with all-natural meats and freshly-delivered produce that is sliced by hand every day. The homemade bread is baked all day, every day, so it is always served fresh. This past year, a ninegrain wheat sub-style bread was added, and you can now get your sandwich made with white French sub-style bread, too. Another addition that has been a huge hit is Kickin’ Ranch side item dipping sauce.

WINE LIST Carlos Creek Winery “Official wine of Minnesota fun”

320-846-5443 6693 CR 34 NW, Alexandria www.carloscreekwinery.com A top finisher in last year’s Best of the Lakes Area competition, Carlos Creek Winery moved into the area’s top spot this year for best wine list. “We just have a great variety,” said president Tami Bredeson. “It’s rare that somebody comes here and they don’t find a wine that they love.” Typically, the winery has about 25 different wines on its menu, including fruit wines, sparkling wines, dessert wines, ice wines and port, as well as sweet and dry whites, sweet and dry reds,

and rosé. They also offer hard apple cider. The winery opened in 1999. With 22 employees, it has a full event center that hosts 50 weddings a year, plus other corporate groups, anniversaries, birthday parties and rehearsal dinners. Recently, Carlos Creek got a catering permit, which allowed it to open an on-site deli. In late September, it began doing off-site catering. It can do wine tastings and also sell by the glass. More changes are in store next year, when it plans to open a brewery. This year, it acquired a mechanical harvester, thanks to the help of an intern who belongs to a fourth-generation winery in France. Fun fact: Carlos Creek is in the midst of trademarking and patenting a new grape. It

KARAOKE Rudy’s Redeye Grill

320-763-9983 5637 Highway 29 S., Alexandria For three years in a row, the people of Alexandria have spoken: They love, love, love karaoke at Rudy’s Redeye Grill. “There’s apparently a lot of good singers in this town that like to come out,” said general manager Rick Goodell. “To do it in a nice venue just seemed to have a nice appeal.” There’s one problem: They put their karaoke nights on

hold while exploring the possibility of adding live music. “We’re working on bringing it back because of all the phone calls we got,” he said. Established in 2003, Rudy’s Redeye Grill is in line for even bigger changes. It’s undergoing a complete remodel expected to be finished mid-December. On the site of a former dairy farm, its new look will incorporate barnwood, Goodell said. Known as the “Meeting Place,” the Corral Saloon and Eatery in Nelson is conveniently located five miles from Alexandria, Carlos, Forada and Osakis. Now boasting 27 employees, the Corral was opened in 1956, according to Sue Hawkinson, owner of the Corral.

When asked why she thought the ribs were voted the best in the lakes area, Hawkinson said, “They have been cooked to perfection for years and the recipe follows from owner to owner.” She added, “Arlene (the chef) continues to make the same sauce.” The Corral is a full-service restaurant and bar with a 300-seating capacity banquet facility. It also offers full off-site catering, Hawkinson said. “We are constantly making changes to our facility and menu to make it the best it can be,” she said.

Yesterday’s staff doesn’t simply line shelves with the antiques it sells. Instead, it pulls them together to create rooms. “We’re not a typical antique store anymore,” said store manager Ron Moritz. “People go, ‘You really know how to put stuff together here. I can really visualize this in my own home.” Named top antique store three years running, Yesterday’s mixes old and new to create a “farmhouse industrial” look, Moritz said. The store began in 1994 and employs five. Shows like HGTV have fueled customers’ desire for one-of-a-kind pieces to mix into their furnishings, he said. Paul explained that in addition to their experience, the store offers unbeatable prices, in part because they don’t have to pay rent or employees. “We’re hard to beat,” he said.

Another thing that sets the store apart is its repair services. In the days of the Internet, it’s easy to buy online, but it’s harder to buy a repair, Paul said. Mission: To create an inviting little shop that has something for everyone. 320-219-7880 111 Sixth Ave. E., Alexandria www.shopkindredpeople.com Kindred People, owned by mother-daughter duo Marceia Andreasen and Kelly Falk, opened its doors in Alexandria in 2015 and last year, opened a new location in Fargo. Kindred People is a clothing and lifestyle boutique that carries women’s clothing and accessories including jewelry, shoes and beauty products, as well as gifts and gift clothing items for men and children. In the clothing industry, shops often have a very narrow target market, but Andreasen said it is important for Kindred People to appeal to a wide range of customers ensuring there is something for everyone in their stores.

“We are constantly curating our selection of clothing and gifts to bring unique and interesting items to our customers,” said Andreasen. She believes Kindred People was chosen as the best boutique because of the enormous amount of local support shown by the community. “It has always been important to us to support local makers through our gift selection and our customers have really responded to that. We also carefully hand select all of the clothing in our shop,” said Andreasen. “When we first opened, we did a lot of research and worked really hard to bring in clothing lines that you couldn’t find in Alexandria in the hopes that people would want to shop local and so we could add to our vibrant downtown shopping district. This continues to be both our challenge and focus.”

The store’s mission is to provide the best possible service and satisfaction to its customers by offering a wide selection of quality products at a good value, adhering to the highest retail standards and supporting the community, Gustafson added.

Owner Mark Juettner has a simple answer when asked why voters selected Juettner Motors as the top dealership for new and used cars in the lakes area: “Our employees,” he said. “They’re all very customer driven and sincere and care about people.” Juettner Motors has been selling cars in Alexandria since 1976. It offers a full range of automotive ser-

“Dedicated to the work of health and healing” 320-762-0399 Sanford Health Broadway Clinic 1527 Broadway St., Alexandria Dr. Alisha Husfeldt puts an emphasis on building a relationship with her patients – a skill that helped her selection as Best Physician in the Lakes Area.

“It is important to me that each of my patients feels genuinely cared for in terms of their medical care as well as the other aspects that make them who they are,” she said. “I hope that when my patients are in the office with me, they are able to witness that I truly enjoy and am passionate about my job in caring for them. FITNESS CLUB, CHILD CARE Alexandria Area YMCA 320-834-9622 110 Karl Drive, Alexandria www.alexandriaymca.com Voters chose the YMCA as the best place for their kids and their fitness. Why? “Because its facilities and staff are second to none,” said operations director Jackie Peters. Children in its child care center enjoy spacious classrooms, an indoor gym and an outdoor playground, and access to the aquatic and fitness centers, she said. “YMCA child care teachers, lead teachers and aides are some of the best around – the planning and purpose they put into each lesson

plan sets our program apart from the rest,” she said. Meanwhile, those who come to work out can use top-of-the-line cardio equipment, a walking/running track, group fitness programs in two studios, swimming pool and a nursery service for their children, Peters said. In 2004, a group of Alexandrians first talked about bringing a YMCA to the area. In 2010, the YMCA opened its 56,000-squarefoot Maynard “Bud,” Sylvia, Diana, Neil and Bruce Peterson Program Center. The Y employs between 120 and 140. Its mission is, “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.”

The clinic offers primary and specialty medical care for patients across all ages. In the past year, Sanford Health continues to grow services and staff, providing quality care close to home. It’s proud to offer more than 40 providers in over 12 specialties right here in Alexandria. Last year at Andria Theatre, there were four musicals produced with large casts, three small cast musicals and one smaller non-musical production. This past year, the Andria spire, which had not been seen since 1974, was put back up on the building and new auditorium seats were installed. “We are looking to brighten up Broadway with a new marquee soon,” Hermes said, adding that a fundraiser for that project is underway.

LOCAL SPORTING EVENT Alexandria Cardinal Football “Together We Will”

Alexandria Area High School Alexandria Sports fans looking for exciting, competitive football can find it by taking in an Alexandria Cardinal football game. The experience was named the Best Local Sporting Event in the Lakes Area. “Friday night under the lights at Viking Bank Field is a wonderful and fun environment,” said Coach Mike Empting. “There is tailgating before the game and it is very much a family-orientated team. There is much excitement and anticipation pregame and I feel like we have had very competitive and fun teams to watch over the past several seasons.”

Also, Cardinal football is a community event and a strong tradition in Alexandria, Empting added. “We have a great homefield advantage because of the great community support,” he said. “There are generations that are connected to the Cardinal football tradition here in Alexandria and they come out every Friday night to support their team. It’s fun, it’s a proud tradition, it’s exciting, it’s Cardinal football!” The coach’s mention of tradition isn’t just talk. There’s been football in Alexandria for more than 100 years.

Thirteen coaches are involved in this year’s program and 129 players from grades 9-12. Last season, the Cards finished 5-5 and played in its third consecutive Section 8-5A championship game, which it won two seasons ago.

The team had a 2-2 record when this story was written. “We are replacing several key players from last year’s team,” the coach noted, “but are very competitive and beginning to come together as a team.”

FUNERAL HOME Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory “Just like family. We are here when you need us.” 320-763-5900 659 Voyager Drive, Alexandria MN In 1872, before Custer’s Last Stand took place at Little Bighorn, Anderson Funeral Home opened in Alexandria. The funeral home has grown to now include seven funeral directors and 27 support staff who work at the two locations – one on Voyager Drive, the other on Broadway. Anderson Funeral Home, which operates Douglas County’s only crematory, offers complete funeral and cremation care. “This is important for families,” said Craig Buysse, manager of Anderson Funeral Home. “When they choose us for cremation, their loved one never leaves our care.” He said the funeral home is continually working to improve upon what it

has done in the past. This past year, the funeral directors all worked to achieve their certification as crematory operators through the National Funeral Directors Association. Anderson Funeral Home achieved the Pursuit of Excellence Award through the National Funeral Directors Association in key areas of funeral service, Buysse noted.

In August, Anderson Funeral Home welcomed a new intern funeral director, Christiana Jahn, an Alexandria native. “I believe the families we have served over the years are appreciative of the care they have received from Anderson Funeral Home,” Buysse said. “We are dedicated professionals who take great pride in our work and our community.”

SMALL COMPANY TO WORK FOR, BANK/FINANCIAL

Bell Bank

“Happy Employees! Happy Customers!” 320-762-3200 800-450-8949 1001 Broadway St., Alexandria www.bellbanks.com Each year, every full-time employee receives $1,000 and every part-time employee $500 to give as they choose to people in need and causes they care about. That’s one of the reasons behind Bell Bank’s consistent high rankings in best workplace surveys, and its leaders see happy employees as a major reason its customers come back. “We have a great team dedicated to working together to help our customers, and it shows,” said market president Jason Pohlen. “Our customers enjoy stopping by the branch to visit us and do their

banking with Bell. Because of their positive experiences, many also refer their friends to bank with Bell.” Founded in 1966 and headquartered in Fargo, Bell is the largest independently owned bank in the upper Midwest, and one of the largest in the nation, with assets of more than $4.7 billion and business in 50 states. Bell’s Alexandria branch opened as a mortgage loan office in 2002 and became a full-service bank in 2006, moving into its newly constructed building in 2008. Bell offers a wide array of banking services including checking and savings accounts, mobile and online banking, business banking, financial planning and investing, as well as mortgage, home equity and other loans. The company employs 1,000 people, including 20 in Alexandria. In December, it opened

a new location, Alexandria North, across the street from its main branch. It primarily houses its wealth management team members. “Our expansion is a result of our exceptional growth in the Alexandria community, and we are excited to continue our growth for many years to come,” Pohlen said. “The Alexandria community has been very good to us!”

Fun fact: Bell Bank’s lounge features a fireplace set into a large stone wall made up of stones picked from the North Dakota farm of the late Thomas “Buck” Snortland, one of the bank’s original founders. Much of the stonework on the building’s exterior also came from the Snortland farm, as a way to connect the bank with the family’s agricultural roots.

LARGE COMPANY TO WORK FOR, VOLUNTEERS Alomere Health, Alomere Health Volunteers 320-762-1511 111 17th Ave. E., Alexandria alomerehealth.com Alomere Health opened in 1955 as Douglas County Hospital. This past year has seen one of its biggest changes ever: its name.

54

A key reason for the name change was that patients come from well beyond the county line. In 2017, it delivered 688 babies from 100 different ZIP codes and its Heartland Orthopedic Specialists welcomed patients from 186 different zip codes including five states. It is the busiest Level 3 Trauma Center in the state, with 17,000 visits to its emergency department annually. It has also brought more than 40 new providers into the

community. That demand recently fueled another major change: In 2017, it completed a $15 million project, including a new specialty clinic and a new same-day surgical clinic and an expansion to support complex surgical procedures. Its mission: “Our passion and purpose is to strengthen and nurture the health and well-being of our family, friends, neighbors, and communities, through every season of life.” With 913 employees, Alomere Health is woven into the fabric of community life. It offers a 24/7 emergency department, a birthing center, an OB/GYN clinic, a general surgical clinic, an Express Care clinic, and a new online eClinic. It provides full-service medical, surgical, pediatric, inpatient, outpatient, rehab,

cardiopulmonary, laboratory, anesthesia, medical oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, radiology, and neurosurgical services, as well as award-winning Heartland Orthopedic Specialists. In August 2019, it will add full-time dermatology. “We’re incredibly honored to have received several recognitions this year,” said spokesman Eddie Reif. “Our patients come to us at some of their best and worst moments in life, and we understand how much trust they put into us.” Alomere’s values of accountability, compassion, excellence, hospitality and integrity drive everything the hospital does, he said. “We’d like to believe they are the reason we’ve received these honors,” he added.
