Granite and basalt
Basalt is the most abundant volcanic rock, in terms of volume, on Earth’s surface. It is resistant to water and corrosion and is used in all phases of architectural construction, from flooring to siding. It is truly an all-purpose stone. Granite, which is strong and durable, is ideal for countertops and floors.
Marble and slate
Renowned for its use by world-famous sculptors, marble can also be used for more practical ends such as floors and countertops. Slate, on the other hand, is a grained stone used for memorial stones and decorative surfaces. In construction, slate is also very practical as roofing material. Because of its strength and its unique layered structure, masons can separate it into thin sheets.
Limestone and sandstone
Limestone is a very pale stone used in building and sculpting, while sandstone is characterized by extreme hardness and has excellent resistance to chemical or climatic stress. Sandstone is used in construction, sculpture, the manufacture of grinding wheels and paving stones.
Stone is synonymous with prestige
The timeless elegance of
stone
For thousands of years, natural stone has been used in building projects. Elegant and timeless, it inspires artists, architects and writers from all backgrounds. In fact, the Spanish poet Federico Lorca wrote that “stone is a shoulder on which to bear Time.” Would you like to integrate stone into your next renovation project? Even though there is a wide choice of natural stone, some kinds have been proven over time for embellishing homes – these days we see it in kitchen countertops, fireplaces, stairs, walls, patios and as exterior siding.
Stone adds elegance, simplicity and warmth to any room. Put simply, you just can’t go wrong when choosing granite for your bathroom, slate for a work surface or marble for a countertop. While synonymous with wealth and luxury, stone also brings a natural ambiance into stately homes. Just a touch here and there is all that’s needed to instantly give an upmarket look to your residence.
Kill two birds with one stone
When the time comes to purchase natural stone for your home, take the time to learn about its proper installation and maintenance. In-store specialists at home renovation stores can suggest which products you need (grout, sealer, cleaner, trowel, etc.) and the best techniques to use. You could always entrust the task to a professional if you don’t like the idea of turning yourself into a tiler or mason for a day. Sometimes urban and contemporary, sometimes rustic and bucolic, stone is always unique. It has no equal when it comes to beautifying a home, and you will surely impress your neighbors with your exquisite taste.

Wine cellars aren’t just for the
wealthy
Did you know that more than 215 gallons of wine are produced around the globe every second? That statistic certainly confirms the world’s passion for the fermented grape. Red, white, pink or fortified, wine is always synonymous with pleasure and refinement. Many wine lovers buy their bottles randomly and consume them within days or weeks of purchase. However, professional sommeliers will tell you that certain well-made wines stored at an ideal temperature increase in value. The good news is that the art of storing wine is no longer the reserve of luxury establishments. The option of keeping a selection of wines in optimal conditions at home is now available to all lovers of this delicious alcoholic beverage.
Some key questions
Stores now stock a wide range of wine cellars and coolers designed for the average wine owner. Before you decide which model you want, ask yourself a few questions. How much do you want to spend? How much space do you need? Is your goal to drink the wine on an ongoing basis or allow high quality wines to age for several years?
Affordable wine coolers
The smallest coolers, in which eight bottles of wine can be stored, sell for less than $200. Even though space is limited, that means you can always have a reasonable selection of wines on hand. There
are also some models on the market for less than $300 that can accommodate up to 24 bottles. Feeling tempted?
A wine cellar, cabinet or cooler?
A wine cellar is a place for storing wine; it may be an electric appliance, called a wine cabinet, or a dedicated room. Wine coolers, on the other hand, are made to cool bottles so you can serve them at the perfect temperature. They are not designed for the aging of wines over long periods of time.

Recycle and decorate
DIY
at the same time
There’s no shortage of great ideas for decorating your home using salvaged or recycled objects. Here are three simple projects that are sure to add an original touch to your decor.
Well-dressed cushions
Do you have some fabric cushions that are faded or have outdated patterns or colors? Cover them with fabric from clothes you no longer wear, whether it’s because of a broken zipper, an unsightly tear or a small stain that’s impossible to remove. What a great way to breathe new life into your cushions and clothes.
A wok in the garden
If you have an old, badly scratched wok, don’t throw it away whatever you do! In a few easy steps, you can turn it into a great
LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED
planter. After painting it, line the bottom with dried moss. Place upon the moss some small stones for drainage and then fill the wok with soil. Now plant whatever you want; put it somewhere in your yard and then sit back and listen to your visitors’ surprised comments.
Door handles
Just changed your doorknobs and you’re wondering what to do with the old ones? Screw a few into a nice wooden plank and attach it to a wall in the entrance hall. You can use it for hanging coats, bags, scarves, umbrellas, etc. Door handles can also be used as curtain hooks. You have too much jewelry? Hang your necklaces and bracelets on some door handles attached to a wall.

rtisans have been creating practical and beautiful objects from time immemorial. Some of these carefully cared for objects increase in value over the years and can become real treasures for avid collectors. Apart from enjoying the pleasures of decorating with antiques, many people like learning about the heritage and history of a culture through their collections. Here are a few tips for people who aren’t yet familiar with the fascinating and popular world of antiques. The first thing to keep in mind is that it isn’t necessary to invest in an imposing piece of antique furniture to add cachet to your decor. Start your collection of treasures from the past by buying small pieces. Leather-bound books from the early 20th century or black and white photographs are a simple way to add a historical touch to your home without breaking the bank. Visit a few antique dealers in your area to see which kinds of items catch your eye. Take some time and try to imagine these pieces in your home. Consult an experienced collector if you’re in any doubt about the value of an expensive item. When you fall in love with a particular antique, it’s time to negotiate. Experts suggest making an initial offer of two-thirds of the listed price. You’ll probably figure out if you have a chance of buying the item at a lower price just from the seller’s reaction. Enjoy your treasure hunting!

An electric fireplace for a
cozy atmosphere
Watching the dancing flames while sipping your favorite drink is a great way to relieve your stress after yet another hectic day. Of course, no electrical appliance can truly replace the smell, movement and sound of a natural wood fire. However, an electric fireplace is an economical option that works wonders. Here are its four major advantages. Unlike other types of fireplaces, it’s suitable for all kinds of homes. There’s no need for a chimney or vent with an electric fireplace; that is why it’s the perfect choice for small apartments and condos. There’s no need to call on the services of a professional to have it installed. Just like a heater, an electric fireplace operates from a wall socket. The process is simple: buy it, unpack it, plug it in and enjoy your new purchase without missing a beat. You control the temperature. Just select a low, medium or high heat, depending on the season. Enjoying a cozy fire on a cool summer evening is always nice. Don’t forget the eco-friendly nature of this type of fireplace – no emissions and no pollution. An electric fireplace is a decorative element that adds style to your home. Since they come in a wide selection of styles, sizes and colors, you’ll definitely find an electric fireplace that complements your decor. It’s also extremely versatile and can be installed on the floor or on the wall of your living room, dining room, bedroom, etc.

Woods
that blend with any decor
Wood is a highly versatile material that can be used in building or for beautifying all types of homes. Nature has given us an almost infinite variety of tree species to work with. Indeed, more than 65,000 species have been identified around the world. Here are some of the kinds of wood most commonly used in construction and renovation projects.
Oak
A symbol of longevity, the majestic oak can easily live for over 500 years in the wild. Under ideal conditions, it can survive for almost 1,000 years. Oak trees produce a wood that is easy to cut and that rarely cracks. In addition, it is heavy and shock resistant. Thanks to these qualities, oak is often used for flooring, structural frames and stairs.
A trio of pines
1. White pine is a fast grower that can reach nearly 100 yards high and can have a diameter of 2.5 yards. White pine is a superior quality wood that’s appreciated in cabinetmaking and carpentry. 2. Red pine is named for the color of its bark, which ranges from red to pink. Stronger than white pine, it is often used to make wideplank flooring and utility poles. 3. Jack pine is a common conifer whose knots give a nice appearance to planks. It is often used for paneling and siding.
Maple
Did you know that according to legend, the famous Trojan horse was built of maple? Maple is a species found around the world. Its
wood is divided into two categories: hardwood and soft wood. Hard maple wood is heavy and valued for its sturdiness. Soft maple wood, on the other hand, is used for purposes that require less strength.
Popular types of wood
In the field of interior decoration, rare or precious woods are in big demand at the moment. For a unique look, designers love the sublime beauty of ebony, mahogany, sandalwood, pink ivory, zebrawood, amaranth and olive. These exotic woods are more expensive than the common kinds, but their rich colors and fine grain are well worth the price. Bamboo is an affordable, elegant alternative and it is also an eco-friendly choice. Reclaimed barn wood and driftwood are also experiencing their hour of glory. Sometimes gray, sometimes bleached, these relics are like treasure to those who know how to breathe new life into them.
Decorating with wood: don’t overdo it!
Whatever the type, wood immediately adds warmth to a home’s atmosphere. However, unless you want to create a country cottage atmosphere, be sure not to overdo it. In other words, don’t go crazy by mixing several different types and colors. Use a harmonious blend of woods and stains to create a coherent decor for living the good life. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a professional decorator.

Underfloor heating is the ultimate in comfort In the chilly season, it’s no fun having to walk barefoot on a cold floor during your nightly trip to the bathroom. If you dream of being able to walk around your home without having to bother putting on a big pair of slippers, why not have underfloor heating installed?
Guaranteed comfort
Underfloor heating usually works with an electric radiant system. This type of heating has several advantages in terms of comfort and energy savings. When a room is heated with an underfloor system, the ambient temperature is the same from floor to ceiling. In addition, all the heat doesn’t escape when you open the door of the room.
Floorings
For maximum efficiency, choose ceramic tiling or natural stone. These are ideal for storing and redistributing heat. That said, the

compatibility of other floorings varies depending on what type it is. So before installing underfloor heating, check with the retailer to make sure the flooring you’re considering will perform efficiently. Also, keep in mind that the job of connecting the heating system to your home’s electrical circuit should be done by an electrician. Here are just a few of the benefits of underfloor heating: The system is completely invisible. It doesn’t require any form of maintenance. It’s silent and doesn’t vibrate. It doesn’t spread dust or germs. It doesn’t dry the air the way other systems do. It uses up to 25 percent less energy than regular electric baseboards.

GoWild paint
with special
Paint retailers have a wildly diverse array of choices when it comes time to pick out a tone or texture for your home decorating project. Here are three new types of paint to tempt you.
Water repellent paint
With the so-called “lotus effect,” water slides over the surface of this paint, washing away any dirt. This phenomenon means that water repellent paint could be called self-cleaning. Not surprisingly, it makes a lot of sense to use this paint primarily in rooms with high humidity or that need cleaning on a regular basis, such as bathrooms or kitchens. This versatile and highly durable product can also be used outdoors.
12 September 2015 • Fall Home Enhancement
Chalkboard paint
Applying chalkboard paint lets you transform any object or surface into a blackboard. With some chalk and a section of wall covered with chalkboard paint, you can draw pictures, post your to-do lists and a weekly menu, create a play area for the children or draw up a family calendar that can be easily changed every month. Note that it doesn’t have to be a blackboard; this kind of paint comes in a wide variety of colors.
Magnetic paint
This unique paint is filled with ferrous particles, allowing you to transform all types of surfaces into magnetic boards. After applying the magnetic paint, you can overlay other colors, wallpaper and even chalkboard paint. Then you can use magnets to attach notes, drawings, photos and maybe even some sweet, romantic messages.

USEFUL winter tools M
any people like to carry a few specific tools in the trunk of their vehicles during winter, in case of roadside or weather-caused emergencies. Even if your vehicle is an all-wheel-drive SUV or a full-fledged four-wheel-drive truck, some tools can be really handy in extreme situations. First, it is a good idea to keep a light shovel in the trunk. It can be a simple aluminum one, but if the car is small and doesn’t have much trunk space, hardware stores sell foldable plastic shovels that will do the job. Another great piece of equipment to keep in back of the car is a traction aid. These are devices that help motorists get unstuck from snowed-in or iced-in situations. Traction aids come in many shapes and sizes; some are made of tough plastic, others of steel material. They usually come in a small box with very simple assembly instructions.
Many drivers like to carry booster cables in their cars – especially older cars – in case the battery dies on a very cold day. It is best to buy high quality cables that come in a solid carrying case. Boosting a car is a specific technique that requires some knowledge. Fortunately, a good booster cable kit will come with clear instructions and a device that can help you identify the positive and negative poles. Getting them mixed up can cause damage to the car. Lastly, if you travel a lot or drive to remote places, it would be a good idea to get a winter survival kit that includes a survival blanket, a candle, and a lighter. The last two items have been proven to provide a little bit of heat in a stalled car in winter. If you ever need to use either, make sure you open a window slightly to allow fresh air to circulate.

Preparing your car for
winter
C
old weather and slippery roads are once again at the doorstep. That means it’s time to prepare your car for winter. These days, a lot of motorists don’t really think about basic maintenance and pre-winter prep because newer cars require less overall maintenance than they did a few golden years ago. But the reality is that car owners can do several things to get ready for the cold season. Changing over to winter tires is the most important move to make. They are adapted for cold pavement and icy conditions and increase road safety beyond measure. After the tires, it is important to change the wiper blades, even if they don’t seem to show any wear. Opting for special winter wiper blades is a great idea, as winter blades are designed to prevent ice build-up. Long before the first snowfall, all the engine fluids should be checked, starting with the windshield washer liquid. You don’t need a mechanic to do a simple job like this one. If you don’t know where
to find the spouts for the other engine fluids, look in your owner’s manual, located in the glove compartment. Incidentally, browsing through that little book could bring you some useful information on all kinds of things you can do to keep your car in top shape. Buy a set of special winter rubber mats for the interior. Protecting your car’s carpeting from melting snow and salt is another way of keeping the vehicle’s resale value. If your new car is equipped with block heating but you are not familiar with how it works, ask your mechanic to show you where the plug is. In fact, why not ask your mechanic to give your car a looking over before winter. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that everything’s OK just because you don’t hear any clunking or grinding! In the coldest season of the year, you want to be able to drive in complete confidence that everything’s working perfectly.
Even a new car must be prepped for winter!

...So what about winter tires? In some northern countries, drivers are legally required to equip their cars with winter tires during the cold season, usually from midDecember to mid-March. Insurance companies here might agree; there is plenty of evidence that specially adapted winter tires reduce the number of winter road accidents caused by icy conditions. It might be tempting to dismiss the use of winter tires as just another expense, but it’s worthwhile to think of them as an investment instead – a guarantee of safety for drivers and their passengers. Designed to handle well on slippery roads, winter tires have proven themselves in terms of road safety. Not only do they provide better vehicle stability when braking, but they allow drivers to stop in a shorter distance and maintain stability when taking corners.

Growth Experts agree that if you are only going to fertilize your lawn once a year, it should be in the fall. Grass grows more slowly as the weather cools, but roots and rhizomes still grow quickly. Applying fertilizer in the fall helps grass grow deep roots now and keeps nutrients available for a healthy start to spring. Wait until mid-tolate fall, then apply a dry lawn fertilizer to all grassy areas.
5 Repair Bald Spots
Fall is also the best time of year to fix any bare or bald spots in your lawn. Sold at most garden and home centers, an all-in-one lawn repair mixture is easy to use. Just use a garden rake to
loosen the soil in the bald spot, then spread a thick layer of lawn repair mixture over the top. Lightly compact the mixture and water thoroughly, then continue to water every other day for two weeks.
6 Weed Control
Fight back against broadleaf weeds such as dandelions in the fall. Weeds are in energyabsorbing mode in the fall, absorbing everything possible, including weed killer. If you apply herbicide in the fall, weeds won’t come back in the spring. Most herbicide manufacturers recommend applying weed killer during early-to-mid autumn when daytime temperatures are still consistently above 60 degrees.
Is your home ready for the
FALL?
Fall doesn’t just involve colourful leaves, rainy days and Halloween candy; it’s also the time to close the pool, caulk windows, clean gutters and the list goes on. In fact, preparing for fall involves a great many jobs. Here are a few of them. • Put away deck furniture and the barbecue. Drain and store garden hoses and turn off any outside taps. • Clean gutters and make sure they drain properly. • Inspect the roof. Make sure skylights, roof shingles and seals on chimneys or vents are in good condition. Do any necessary repairs. • Have your chimney cleaned and your fireplace inspected to prevent fires. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working well, and then change the batteries (they should be replaced every year). • Examine the foundations and the exterior siding, and fix any cracks to prevent water or air infiltration. • Check the sump pump to avoid any unpleasant surprises during heavy rainfall or the spring melt. • Check your deck or balcony. Make sure railings and steps are safe, and replace rotten or damaged planks. Check if the deck is adequately lit and take advantage of the mild weather to replace bulbs in outdoor fixtures. • Inspect doors and windows. To keep cold and damp from entering the house, replace damaged seals and weather stripping. • Clean the filters of your air exchanger and heating system. Vacuum inside any furnace registers. It would also be wise to verify that the heating system is working properly.
