3 rules for remodeling your kitchen

P

lanning a kitchen remodel? Here are three golden rules you should follow to ensure your project’s success. 1. The work triangle. When planning the layout of your kitchen, you need to consider the work triangle, a zone delineated by the washing, cooking, and food storage spaces. This triangle is where you will spend most of your time. For the kitchen to function well, the distances between the dishwasher (or sink), the fridge and the stove must be equal, or almost equal. Don’t place these appliances too far apart.

2. Clearance. Do you want to build an island in your kitchen? Make sure to leave about four feet of space between your cupboards and your island so that you can move around easily. Similarly, plan for at least three feet of clearance in front of your dishwasher for comfortable loading and unloading. In all cases, make sure that you can move around without having to contort yourself, even when the fridge, oven or dishwasher door is open.

Install a ceramic tile backsplash in five easy steps

I

f you’re looking for a way to enhance the look of your kitchen, bathroom or laundry room, try putting in a ceramic tile backsplash. Here are five steps to follow.

1. Prepare the surface. If you’re installing the tiles in your bathroom or laundry room, make sure to cover the wall in water-resistant gypsum. This will provide the best protection against moisture and mold. Also, the surface must be smooth, clean and dry. If the wall is painted, sand it gently. 2. Draw guide lines. Draw a vertical line across the middle of the surface you want to cover. Then, place a tile spacer at the edge of your backsplash (at counter level, for example). This will indicate where you should place your first row of tiles. Using a level and a pencil, draw a horizontal line to mark the placement. 3. Place the tiles. Starting at the middle of the bottom row, use a

4 Fall Home and Builders Guide • 2018

trowel to spread ceramic tile adhesive on a small part of the wall. Place the tiles by lightly pressing on each one, referring back to the horizontal line you drew to make sure they’re level. Place a tile spacer between each tile and repeat until the surface is entirely covered. Let dry for 24 hours. 4. Apply grout. Remove the tile spacers and wipe your ceramic tiles with a damp sponge. Apply the grout so that it fills the grout lines between the tiles. Smooth it out, let it dry, and then clean the tiles. Don’t apply grout to the edges of your backsplash (between the first row of tiles and your counter, for example). You’re better off using caulking for these spaces. 5. Seal the grout lines. Seal your grout lines by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Several coats might be necessary. Finally, clean your backsplash with a damp cloth, and admire the results!

3. Lighting. Generally, kitchens have four types of lighting: natural light (from a window above the sink, for example), general light (from a ceiling light or recessed lights), task lights (spotlights on your work surfaces) and accent lights (LED strips underneath the cabinets). Be sure to plan out the placement of your lights before beginning construction work. Finally, for all your construction and renovation project needs, never hesitate to call on your local specialists.

Five common wallpaper

mistakes

Would you like to put up some wallpaper to complement a room’s decor? For the results to live up to your expectations, make sure you don’t make any of these five common mistakes. 1. Forgetting to prepare the surface: for the wallpaper to adhere properly, thoroughly wash and dry your walls beforehand. Sand uneven or rough parts and fill any holes. Finally, apply a primer that’s specially designed for wallpaper application. 2. Choosing the wrong paste: there are many types of wallpaper on the

market, and each one requires a specific type of adhesive paste. Therefore, to prevent your wallpaper from becoming deformed or from detaching, carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions and get the right paste for the job. 3. Not measuring: if you want your wallpaper to be put up the right way, get a measuring tape and a level, and draw reference lines on the walls to make sure the strips are vertical. Don’t rely just on wall angles, since they aren’t always perfectly straight.

4. Leaving no wiggle room: never cut your wallpaper to the exact size of your walls. Plan for an extra 2 to 5 inches instead, since wallpaper can stiffen while drying. You’ll just have to cut off the surplus with a utility knife.

Have you heard of color Color zoning is a popular interior design technique that uses colorful sections of paint on walls to give any room a dose of character. Lines, rectangles, circles—no matter what shape you use to create your color zones, the idea behind the

concept is to invigorate a given space using color.

Use blocks of color on the walls to define each area.

STRUCTURE Color zoning is a great way to visually divide a large room. Do your living room and dining room make up one big open space that you’d like to separate in some way?

HIGHLIGHT Color zoning can be used to make your favorite elements pop, whether they’re accessories (vases, decorations, mirrors, etc.), pieces of furniture

5. Not wiping off extra paste: since wallpaper paste isn’t transparent and can create unsightly shiny spots, don’t wait until it dries to wipe it off. Always keep a damp sponge handy and remove excess paste every time you place a strip of wallpaper.

or architectural features. This technique can also be used to compensate for a room’s dimensions (e.g. a low ceiling) or to mask certain defects (e.g. damaged walls).

Four things to consider when choosing your range hood A range hood is vital for preserving your kitchen’s air quality and an integral part of the room’s decor. Here are a few criteria to consider when shopping for yours. 1. Stove placement. First and foremost, choose a range hood that suits the placement of your stove. If your stove is against a wall, you can opt for a chimney hood or a conventional hood (placed under a cabinet). Is your stove part of a kitchen island? In that case, an island or downdraft hood would be more suitable. 2. Available space. If your kitchen is cramped, choose a hood that will allow you to optimize your space. For example, a model with an integrated microwave can give you more counter space.

Before buying a chimney hood, make sure you have enough storage space: you might need to remove the cabinets above your stove. 3. Ventilation. Make sure your hood is adapted to your ventilation system. Conventional models, for example, are often created for systems that exhaust air to the outside. On the other hand, if you have a recirculating system, you’ll need a hood with a very good filter. 4. Air movement. Generally, a 600 CFM (cubic feet per minute) hood is best for home use. That being said, if you often use multiple burners simultaneously, or if you plan to install your hood more than 30 inches above your stove, you might need a more powerful appliance.

As an integral part of any kitchen’s decor, the range hood is an appliance that must be chosen with care.

Sensible advice for setting up your

wine cellar

Are you a wine lover? Do you want to create a space in which to store your favorite bottles? Before getting started, you should know that many elements must be considered in order to preserve your best vintages. Here are five recommendations for setting up the perfect wine cellar. 1. Maintain an optimal temperature. Your wine cellar shouldn’t be too cold or too hot. Ideally, the temperature should be kept between 51 and 57 °F. Otherwise, your wine runs the risk of premature aging. 2. Manage humidity levels. The ideal humidity

level for a wine cellar is usually between 60 and 80 percent. If it’s too high, the corks could get moldy; too low, and the wine’s quality could be affected. 3. Avoid strong lighting. Since wine is very sensitive to light, it’s best to store it in a dark place. Choose a low-intensity light source for when you need to see what you’re doing.

4. Opt for individual compartments. To avoid having to move your bottles around too frequently, store them horizontally in individual compartments. Wine doesn’t respond well to being moved around, so

storing each bottle in its own compartment is the best way to preserve its flavor. 5. Keep strong smells away. Remember that wine breathes. Avoid storing

or using strong-smelling products in your cellar, because the smells could eventually get through the cork and alter the taste of the wine.

How to prevent

window condensation Are your windows often fogged up in the winter? In addition to blocking your view of the outdoors, condensation reduces the amount of sunlight that comes into your home. The result? You have to heat and light up your space more. Hello, epic energy bills! Furthermore, condensation can damage window frames and cause numerous problems such as rust and mold. How can this be remedied? To reduce or eliminate your condensation problems, make sure that the ventilation in your

kitchen and bathroom is as efficient as possible. You can also maximize air circulation by opening your blinds or curtains as often as possible. Try to maintain your indoor

humidity levels at around 35 to 50 percent. Don’t forget that some habits, like hanging wet clothes in the house to dry, can contribute to higher humidity levels.

Finally, if your windows are old, the best solution is to replace them with new ones.

Have a healthier home with an

air exchanger

ith pet hair, glues, paints, varnishes, cleaning products and dust, the air we breathe indoors is often less pure than the air outside. So how can you improve the air quality in your home? One ideal solution would be to install an air exchanger for optimal ventilation. SEVERAL BENEFITS With walls becoming better insulated, and doors and windows being increasingly airtight, rooms these days are practically hermetically sealed. Although this is perfect for reducing air infiltrations and leaks that lead to higher energy bills, it also means moisture, foul smells and all kinds of pollutants remain

trapped indoors. That’s why having an air exchanger to periodically renew your indoor air is valuable, even essential, for modern homes. By replacing the used air in your home with fresh, outdoor air, this compact and easy-to-maintain device can help make your living space healthier. It’s especially useful if one of your household members has asthma or allergies. Furthermore, an air exchanger makes your home more comfortable and reduces the risk of mold and condensation in your windows. Convinced? To find the air exchanger that’s right for you, ask a local specialist for advice.

How to brighten up your

BASEMENT Basements, by nature, tend to be dark. A window might let in a bit of natural light, but there are many other ways to make your basement brighter. Here are a few. COLORS Light colors are your greatest allies when it comes to brightening a space. Opt for shades of white, beige or pale grey, and paint the whole room the same color (ceiling, walls, doors and frames). This will make the area look bigger, and therefore, brighter. Use pale flooring to further enhance the illusion of space. MATERIALS Furniture with a shiny finish, such as leather sofas or plastic chairs, reflects light and diffuses it throughout the room. Transparent materials like glass and plexiglass can have the same

effect. You could also add a layer of epoxy-based varnish to your floor to make it ultra-lustrous and give your basement extra sparkle. ACCESSORIES If you’re looking to increase your basement’s brightness, adding light sources is a surefire solution. Use

multiple embedded and hanging lights to eliminate as many dark spots as possible. This will help you create a warm and inviting environment. Finally, reflective accessories (mirrors, chrome decorations, etc.) are the perfect way to complete a well-lit room.

GREEN with recycled paint Made from leftover paint that’s been filtered, purified and remixed, recycled paint is the perfect ecofriendly option for all of your home renovation projects. In terms of quality and ease of use, recycled paint is similar to most other paint options on the market. The only slight drawback is that there’s a limited number of colors and finishes to choose from. However, its affordable price tag more than makes up for the relative lack of variety. Not only does recycled paint support efforts to reuse and recycle, it’s more energy-efficient to produce than conventional paint. So why not give it a go for your next remodeling project?

How to prevent

mold

Mold lurks in damp places such as window sills and basements and may smell of earth and decay. Not only can it damage your home’s structure, but it also affects air quality and may lead to health issues accompanied by various symptoms (nasal discharge, wheezing, eye irritation, headaches, etc.). So how can you prevent mold from taking hold? Here are a few tips. HUMIDITY AND VENTILATION To prevent mold, maintain an indoor humidity level between 30 and 50 percent and ensure optimal ventilation. This means you should: • Avoid long showers. • Always turn on the exhaust fan when bathing or cooking, and let it run for a few more minutes after finishing. • Regularly empty the dehumidifier and clean appliances that contain

water (humidifier, dehumidifier, air conditioner, etc.). • Quickly clean up any messes or water leaks and discard water-damaged materials (carpets, mattresses, gypsum boards, upholstered furniture, etc.) immediately.

• Avoid storing cardboard boxes or old clothes in damp places such as the basement. • Open windows on a regular basis and make sure your air exchanger is in good working order.

the roof: replace 9 Inspect any damaged shingles

(split, curled, wavy, loose, etc.). If you have a flat roof made of asphalt and gravel, make sure the crushed stone covers the whole surface. Also, remove all debris and check the flashing. For best results, call a professional roofer for a maintenance inspection. the chimney: 10 Sweep sweep your chimney –

or have it swept by an expert – in order to reduce fire hazards. Moreover, check the chimney cap or put one in place. This simple device prevents animals from being able to sneak into your home. garden furniture: 11 Store wash all outdoor

furniture then store it or shelter it with protective covers. All cushions, however, should be brought

indoors. Be sure to also store the barbecue (after cleaning the grill and removing the propane tank, of course). the vents: 12 Fence keep rodents out

to of your home, place grills on all of your vents (i.e. extractor fan, bathroom fan, dryer, central vacuum, etc.). If you already have grills in place, inspect them to make sure they’re in good shape. Also,

make certain that each valve closes properly. the gutters: 13 Clean remove leaves (wait

until they all fall) and other debris from your gutters so that water can flow as it’s supposed to. If you don’t, standing water could freeze and damage the gutters. Also, take the opportunity to assess your gutters and, if necessary, strengthen them.

Prepare your car for Despite the fact that modern vehicles are designed to handle many weather conditions, there are still some basic maintenance steps that every driver should take.

WIPER FLUID: Winter means sub-zero temperatures and you’ll need a freeze-resistant wiper fluid to help keep windshields clean and give you the best possible visibility.

FLUIDS The best way to winterize your car is to check all fluid levels, whether you take your vehicle to a mechanic or do it yourself. OIL: Consult your owner’s manual for the proper oil for your car if you live in area’s where the weather drops below freezing. COOLANT: The correct mixture of coolant (antifreeze/water) is especially important in the winter to prevent the liquid from freezing in your radiator. If you are doing it yourself, check your owner’s manual for the mixture rate and make sure your fluid is filled.

BATTERY Cold weather reduces the capacity of your car battery, making it harder to start. You should inspect not only your battery, but the terminals, cables and fluid to keep your car up and running. Also, check on the age of your battery since older batteries begin to lose their charge.

WINTER TIRE TREAD: Make sure that the tread on your tires isn’t worn down. Tires without proper tread are dangerous and can reduce the traction needed to stop. SNOW TIRES: Many car manufacturers recommend changing tires in the winter. They can increase your traction and help keep you safe. Many tire manufacturers also have all-season models that you can drive on all year long.

FROZEN LOCKS Cold weather can cause your door locks to freeze, especially in icy weather. Trying to force them can break off your key. Stock a tube of de-icer for locks in your garage, home and/or at work, but don’t leave it in your car. If your locks are frozen, you won’t be

able to get in your car to use it.

WIPER BLADES Wiper blades usually last for about a year, so make sure to change them out if they look worn and make sure to buy blades designed for winter weather. EMERGENCY KIT Keep an emergency kit in your car with important items if you get stranded on the side of the road. BELTS AND HOSES Cold temperatures can cause belts and hoses to weaken, so check for signs of wear and replace them if needed. MAINTENANCE Keep up with the regular maintenance for your car all year long to keep your car on the road and not in the shop.

30 Fall Home and Builders Guide • 2018

Today’s engines work harder than ever. Turbocompressors, for instance, place significant strain on their mechanical components and require a high-quality lubricant. No matter what model of car you own, experts recommend that you use synthetic motor oil. Lab-made and chemically stable, synthetic oil covers a broader protection spectrum than conventional motor oil. For example, when you tow a load during the summer, synthetic oil is more resistant to high engine temperatures. It also does a better job cold-starting engines in the winter. A good rule of thumb is to use lower-viscosity oil in hot weather and switch

to higher-viscosity oil when temperatures start to drop. While it’s true that synthetic oil is more expensive, the extra cost is well worth the added engine protection it provides. You’ll also need to change your oil less frequently if you use a synthetic variety. Conventional oil should be replaced every 3,100 miles, whereas some synthetic oils last up to 15,500 miles. The recommended interval will always be indicated in your owner’s manual. In any case, regardless of mileage, you should always change your oil after a year of use, as any additives will have lost their effectiveness, and dirt accumulation will have naturally deteriorated the lubricant.
