Upgrading your yard can be a major undertaking, and it’s easy to miss a key detail if you’re not careful. Here are five things to consider before you begin.

Access. If your upgrade involves moving large objects into your yard, there needs to be a safe access route. Fences, walls and trees can make it difficult or impossible for trucks to deliver supplies. Create a plan before the work starts to avoid delays.

Space. If you want to install a pool or build a large deck, make sure there’s enough room in your yard for both the

structure and the installation crew. Also, verify where property lines are located before placing fences, hedges and trees.

Regulations. If your project involves a significant structural change, you may need to obtain a permit from the city. Your landscaping might also have to meet certain requirements such as respecting the maximum height for fences and hedges. Contact your municipality before starting any work.

Spring cleaning tips for your car You might associate spring cleaning with your home, but your car could also use a thorough clean-up at this time of year. Here are some tips to ensure that the job gets done right. Wait for a cloudy day. Bright, sunny days can cause water to evaporate off your car too quickly, leaving behind unsightly water marks. In contrast, warm but cloudy days allow water to dry more slowly, thereby giving you enough time to manually dry the car. Use a specialized soap. Dish soap is mild but can leave deposits behind. Harsher detergents, however, may damage the finish on the vehicle. The best cleaning product for your car is one that’s specifically designed for this purpose. Pay attention to the undercarriage. This is the part of your car that’s most exposed to dirt,

grime and road salt. Thoroughly rinse the bottom of the car by pointing your hose upward. Don’t forget to clean your tires and wheels. Apply wax. Once your car’s clean and dry, apply wax to make it shine and to protect it from the sun and other elements. Clean the inside. Vacuum the floors and upholstery, dust all hard surfaces and throw out any garbage. Use a stiff brush to clean the floor mats. Finally, use a small air compressor (like the sort used to clean keyboards and other electronics) to clean vents and hard-to-reach spots. Many people love to wash their car. If you’re not one of them, consider taking your car through an automated carwash or having it professionally detailed.

Basement insulation Insulation keeps your basement warm in the winter, cool in the summer and dry all year long. But because it’s underground, you can’t approach insulating this area the same way you would the rest of the house. Here’s what you should know. EXTERIOR OR INTERIOR? If you’re building a new home, insulating the exterior of the basement walls is preferable. Exterior insulation prevents heat loss, inhibits moisture infiltration and takes up less space inside the house. On an existing home, however, insulating the foundation is impractical and very expensive. Insulating behind the drywall provides similar heat retention and moisture inhibition. However, it does take up more room, which may be a consideration for people with smaller basements.

TYPES The most commonly used types of insulation in basements are foam board, fiberglass and spray foam. Fiberglass is inexpensive but can settle and doesn’t protect from moisture. Spray foam is the most expensive type but can be used almost anywhere and, if properly installed, is water and air proof. Foam board is the easiest to install. An uninsulated basement can be overly cold in the winter, too hot in the summer and uncomfortably damp year-round. By insulating the space, you’ll lower your energy bills and make it a more comfortable part of your home.

5 key steps for taking your car out of storage

Spring is here, and if you happen to have a summer vehicle tucked away, now’s the time to take it out of storage. Here are five essential steps to take before you hit the road.

CHECK THE FLUIDS. If you didn’t change the oil before putting your car into storage for the winter, do it now. You should also check the other fluids, including your coolant, brake, transmission and windshield wa sher fluids. Top these up if necessary. INSPECT THE TIRES. Even if they look fine, check the pressure in your tires as it may have dropped over the winter. If necessary, inflate them to the

manufacturer’s requirements. Visually inspect them for wear, cracks and bulges, and repair or replace them if necessary.

CONNECT THE BATTERY. If your battery wasn’t connected to a maintainer or tender over the winter, charge it fully. Before reconnecting it, check the wires and terminals for corrosion. PERFORM A VISUAL INSPECTION. Check all visible electric wires and hoses for damage. Ensure that there are no foreign objects or signs of pest infestation under the hood, in the trunk and in the cabin. Finally, look for signs of damage to the paint and body.

REPLACE WORN OUT PARTS. Air filters can accumulate dust over the winter and windshield wipers can become dry and cracked from disuse. If necessary, install replacements before driving. When driving your car for the first time after an extended period in storage, it’s normal for the wheels to vibrate for a few minutes until any flat spots have rounded out. Similarly, the brakes may be noisy the first time you use them. If these things don’t go away after driving for about half an hour, or you notice other irregularities, bring your car to a professional to have it inspected.

Change your tires. Winter tires perform poorly on hot, dry roads. If you used them over the last few months, now’s the time to switch back to all-season or summer tires.

Check the pressure. Cold air causes the pressure in your tires to decrease, deflating them and making them

Many tires have tread wear indicators inside the grooves. If your indicators are flush with the grooves, the tires are no longer safe to drive on.

However, it’s not your average tree. Here are three things to consider before planting a weeping willow on your property. They grow quickly. Weeping willows can grow more than three feet every year in height and width. A full-grown tree can be up to 50 feet high and 40 feet across. The root system also grows quickly and extensively. This type of tree must therefore be planted far from buildings, septic tanks and sidewalks, as well as underground sewer, water and power lines.
