Defending Junior s Lincoln Johnson 10-12 champ advances

Just puttin’ along at the Resorters Gustafson, Heimsness grab top spots in annual putting contest It was a battle of youth versus experience on Wednesday night as the 2011 Resorters putting contest came down to 18year-old Tanner Gustafson and 47-yearold Eric Heimsness. In the end, youth won out. Gustafson and Heimsness matched each other putt for putt through the first seven holes of the championship before Gustafson took the lead on the 8th. Heimsness had a little too much speed on a pin location that caused many participants to fly past the hole over the course of the night. That was exactly what happened to Heimsness as the Woodbury native had to settle for a three after missing his putt back

up the slope. Gustafson sank his second putt to take a 1up lead into the 9th. He then calmly drained a three-footer on the last hole to secure the win. The Carlos native earned his opportunity to pick up the win by matching aces with Heimsness on the 1st and 5th holes. Both players will have some money to spend at the AGC pro shop for their efforts. Gustafson went home with a $150 gift certificate, while Heimsness had $100 to spend. The other semifinalists, Scott Stockmoe of Alexandria and Thomas Strandemo of Fargo, got $75 gift certificates, while the four others who reached the quarterfinals earned $50.

The putting contest is all fun and games at the Resorters’ Tournament, but if you make it to the semifinals, you might as well do everything to win it. That is exactly what Fargo’s Thomas Strandemo (above) seemed to have in mind last night as he crouched down to line up his putt in his final four match against Tanner Gustafson of Carlos. Gustafson had his putting stroke going as he took down Strandemo before upending Eric Heimsness in the championship. Heimsness congratulated Gustafson (right) after he drained about a three-footer for the win on the ninth hole.

Defending champ wins again Defending champion Lincoln Johnson of Chaska took his first step toward repeating in the Junior 10-12 Division by taking his match against Glenview, Illinois’ Ryan O’Hara on Wednesday morning. Johnson will now take on Ben Doherty as the juniors decide who will play for a championship when they tee off in the semifinals on Friday morning at 9:36. JOHNSON DEF. O’HARA, 5-4 Johnson played like a returning champion on Wednesday as he needed just five holes to take care of O’Hara. The 11-year-old looked poised to make a run at another title as he parred all five of his holes. O’Hara could not keep up as he bogeyed his first three on the back before a double on 13 set him four holes back. DOHERTY DEF. BLOEDORN, 2-UP Alexandria’s Ben Doherty earned the right to play Johnson in the semifinals by outlasting fellow Alexandrian Blake Bloedorn in the quarters. This one proved to be a back-and-forth contest from the get-go. Bloedorn overcame an early deficit to tie things up with a birdie on 13 by sinking a long putt. Doherty responded down the stretch with a big win on 17 that helped him secure the win. DUBÉ DEF. N. ADAMS, 2-1 Hastings’ Logan Dubé earned a close win of his own by edging Nate Adams of Maple Grove in the bottom half of the bracket. Dubé showed some perseverance after rallying from a tough first hole to take the win. He tripled the 10th but bounced right back with a par win on the 11th to even things back up. Dubé then put together back-to-back wins in the middle of his round to take his first lead. A bogey win on No. 14 put him 1-up and a par win on the 15th gave him a little cushion. It proved to be Echo Press enough as both players went par, bogey on their Defending Junior 10-12 Division champion Lincoln Johnson of next two holes to close out the match. Chaska followed through on his drive during the opening round of C. ADAMS DEF. BIGGER, 2-1 championship play yesterday. Johnson put himself back in the Christopher Adams of Maple Grove secured the semifinals with a 5-4 win over Ryan O’Hara of Glenview, Illinois. other spot in the semifinals by outlasting

Alexandria’s Joseph Bigger in another close match. Like Dubé, Adams had to get past a rough first hole before going on to get the win. He posted an eight on the 10th but responded with back-to-back wins on his next two holes. It was a lead that Adams would never relinquish. Bigger got one back with a bogey win on the 15th, but Adams did what he had to do down the stretch to wrap up the match. Former champ still in the running Heinen, Matthews, Haugen and Swedberg all advanced to Friday Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma, the 2009 champion, was back on his game for the second straight day, advancing one step closer to earning his second Resorters title as he defeated Alex Buysse of Marshall 7-5 in the Junior 13-15 Division. Heinen will be joined in the semifinals on Friday by fellow Oklahoman Cole Matthews of Edmond, who advanced with a 5-4 win over Nick Adams of Maple Grove. The only Alexandria player remaining in the field is Cole Haugen, who topped Hunter Bruhn of Buffalo 2-1, while Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California picked up a 1-up win over Carter Kranz of Sauk Centre. Bruhn had defeated the co-medalist of the tournament, Brent Haukom of Marshall on Tuesday. Action in this division will continue Friday at noon on the first tee. UPPER BRACKET HAUGEN DEF. BRUHN 2-1 Haugen had a close 2-1 match with Bruhn to advance to Friday’s semifinals. No further details were avail-

able. MATTHEWS DEF. ADAMS 5-4 Four seemed to be Matthew’s lucky number Tuesday as he notched nine of them en rout to a 5-4 win over Adams. Opening on the back nine, Matthews used five of those fours to jump to a 2-up lead on birdie, par, birdie, bogey, birdie, leaving just one hole halved – both players collected fours – and giving Adams just one win, that on No. 13 as Adams birdied with a three. Both players shot birdie on No. 15, with Matthews adding his sixth four-spot – a birdie on No. 16. Another halved hole and another birdie for Matthews, this time with a three, gave him a 4-up lead at the turn. Things got a little stickier on the front nine as Matthews opened with a par (4), but gave back that win on the next hole as Adams birdied. Another four for par, followed by yet another birdie for Adams left the Oklahoman at 4-up. The match ended on No. 5 as Matthews clicked off his final four of the match – a par win, sending him into tomorrow’s semifinals. LOWER BRACKET HEINEN DEF. BUYSSE 7-5 Heien, this year’s co-medalist, couldn’t have asked for a better showing than his 7-5

quarterfinal win over Buysse. The 2009 champ started a little slow, however, as Buysse won Nos. 10 and 12 on a par and a birdie, with Heinen winning Nos. 11 and 13 on pars. From there, Heinen went on a tear, winning five of the next six holes on birdie, par, par, birdie, and halving No. 15 with Buysse as both players shot bogey. That left Heinen 4-up at the turn and he proceeded to dispatch Buysse by winning three of the next four holes with a birdie, bird and par to earn the 7-5 victory. SWEDBERG DEF. KRANZ 1-UP The Monterey, California native had to battle to the end to pick up his win and move on. No further details were available. Two former champs in quarterfinals Two former champs are still in contention, while one was ousted during Wednesday’s Women’s Division championship flight action. Women’s champion from 2003 and 2008, Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park, earned a 6-4 victory over Jessica Nelson of Alexandria, while Maggie Leland, champion in 2007 and 2009, also advanced. Leland used a win over former teammate Maxine Carlson and will now face her own sister, Molly, in the quarterfinals. Two-time champion Connie Sornsin of Goodyear, Arizona was bumped off 6-5 in today’s round by Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka. Emily Kvidera of Ramsey ran away with her match, wining 8-7 over Jen Cavers of Alexandria. Kvidera golfs with Maggie and Molly Leland at Augustana College. ALDRICH DEF. J. NELSON, 6-5 A veteran at this game, Aldrich had no problem in her first match of this year’s championship flight, defeating Nelson 6-5. The St. Louis Park golfer notched six par wins and two wins by bogey to secure her spot in today’s quarterfinal play. Aldrich opened with one of her par victories, then, beginning on No. 3, rattled off four straight wins with par, bogey, par, par. Nelson grabbed her only win of the front nine

on No. 7 as she parred the hole, but Aldrich took back that win on the following hole as she bogeyed for the advantage. A halved hole on No. 9 left Aldrich up by five at the turn. Both players struggled a bit on No. 10, finishing with bogeys, and Nelson earned her second and final advantage with a par on the next hole before Aldrich closed out the match with two wins by par. BECKENDORF DEF. A. NELSON, 4-3 Beckendorf and Nelson battled back and forth for much of the front nine, with the Blaine golfer picking up steam after the turn. Nelson was the first to grab an advantage as she used a par on No. 2 to go up one. Beckendorf parred the next hole to even the match, and the two then battled head-to-head for the next three holes. Nelson once again took a lead with a par win on No. 7, but, once again, Beckendorf responded with her own par. She added a final par win on

There, Beckendorf clipped out a pair of par wins, giving one back to Nelson on No. 13, but rebounding to win the next two holes on birdie and bogey for a 4-up win and a spot in today’s quarterfinals. M. KNUTSON DEF. L. KNUTSON 2-UP Sister Molly and Laura Knutson of Edina battled it out until Molly earned a 2-up victory. No further details were available. WOODHULL DEF. SORNSIN, 6-4 Two-time champion Sornsin couldn’t keep up with the Minnetonka player, falling 6-4. Storming out of the gate, Woodhull knocked out three straight wins with bogey, par and birdie, then added to her lead with a bogey win on No. 6. Sornsin saw her only advantage of the front nine come on the following hole as she parred for a win, but Woodhull rallied back for another par win on No. 8 and held a 4-up lead heading to the back nine. Once there, Woodhull continued to pound away, winning two more holes on pars. Sornsin tried a second time to come back, winning No. 12 with a par, but Woodhull used a birdie on No. 14 to end the match with a 6-4 victory. LOWER BRACKET KVIDERA DEF. CAVERS 8-7 Can you say masterpiece? Kvidera’s win over Cavers was a near perfect march to victory as the Augustana College golfer did not allow her opponent a single victory. WOMEN Page 9

Defending champ, runner-up roll on in Senior Men’s But medalist is eliminated Two big contenders in the Resorters Senior Men’s Division – defending champion Jon Empanger and last year’s runner-up Greg Mattson – both survived a second round of match play yesterday. Empanger, in fact, is making it look easy. In the opening round, he defeated his opponent in just 11 holes and on Wednesday, it was all over after 12. Mattson, meanwhile, had to grind out a win in 21 holes. This year’s medalist, Jim Arnold of Plymouth, was knocked out of contention by Bill Freeman after 16 holes. Alexandria golfers Rick Feriancek and Dave Battey also remain in the hunt. The “elite eight” will tee it up today starting at 12:18 p.m. from No. 1. Here’s how they got there: EMPANGER DEF. PETERSEN, 7-6 One look at Empanger’s scorecard can tell you how good the defending champ is playing. He carded a 32 on the front nine, highlighted by birdies on No. 1, 5, 7 and 8, and carried a 5-up lead at the turn. Any chance for Larry Peterson of Albert Lea to stage a comeback was quickly dashed when Empanger won Nos. 10 and 11 with pars. The match ended with more pars on No. 12. MATTSON DEF. HARTMANN IN 21 HOLES It was a back-and-forth battle with sudden turnarounds and comebacks before Mattson of Becker finally emerged the victor. The front nine was tightly played. Hartmann won just two holes, Nos. 1 and 8 with a par and birdie, matching Mattson’s pair of wins on Nos. 2

(bogey) and 3 (par). Knotted up at the turn, Mattson took a brief lead on No. 10 with a birdie only to give it back to Hartmann, who won the next two holes with a par and birdie. Mattson again squared the match with a par win on No. 13 but Hartmann rallied to win the next hole with a birdie. The seesaw affair continued with Mattson winning No. 16 with birdie, Hartmann taking No. 17 with par and Mattson tying the match with a dramatic birdie on the final hole in regulation. Both golfers parred the first extra holes and matched birdies on No. 2 before Mattson finally nailed down the nail-biter with a par win on the 21st hole of the match. FERIANCEK DEF. BODELSON, 1-UP Feriancek couldn’t build up a lead against Scott Bodelson of Burnsville but he never let the match get away from him either. Both golfers won three holes on the front nine: Feriancek on Nos. 2 (birdie), 4 (par) and 7 (birdie) and Bodelson on Nos. 3, 5 and 9 (all pars). They were both 2-over par at the turn. The back nine was also a dogfight with both men matching each other on the next four holes. Feriancek finally broke the stalemate with a birdie win on No. 14 but Bodelson countered with a par win on the next hole. Feriancek made a crucial par on No. 16 to go 1up. He then matched Bodelson’s pars on the next two holes to claim a hard-fought 1-up victory.

Bill Freeman

Brian Bloedorn

Steve Tessmer

Jeff Pederson

BATTEY DEF. HANSON, 4-3 A flurry of wins on the front nine was enough for Battey to hold off Brad Hanson. All square going into the 5th hole, Battey unleashed a barrage of four straight wins with a par, birdie, par, par and held a 4-up lead at the turn. Hanson could only match Battey’s pars on No. 10, 11 and 12 and then fell further back when Battey’s par won No. 13. Battey got into trouble on No. 13 and conceded the hole but he quickly finished off the match by tying Hanson’s par on No. 15. FREEMAN DEF. ARNOLD, 3-2 Eliminating a medalist and staging a steady turnaround on the back nine was all in a day’s work for Bill Freeman. Arnold drew first blood, winning Nos. 2 and 3 with pars. Freeman answered with a par win on No. 4 and his birdie on the 7th hole tied the match. Arnold, however, came back with a par win on No. 9 to take a 1-up lead at the turn. Freeman took advantage when Arnold went out of bounds on No. 10 to again deadlock the match. Something seemed to click for Freeman after that. He won Nos. 12, 14 and 15 with two birdies and par and then matched Arnold’s birdie on No. 16 to claim a 3-2 victory. BLOEDORN DEF. FLESCH, 6-5 Michael Flesch of Neenah, Wisconsin ran into SENIORS PAGE 10

Starting on the front nine, Kvidera posted eight straight wins using seven pars and a bogey. Just one hole was halved by the two players. On the back nine, the two shared No. 10 before Kvidera put the exclamation mark on her victory with an eagle win on No. 11. CUMMINGS DEF. LEIGEB, 2-UP Cummings had to come from behind in this one, as Allison Leigeb of Lexington, Kentucky won Nos. 1, 4 and 5. But Cummings came back with wins on No. 6 and 8 to cut the lead to one at the turn. On the back nine, Cummings earned wins on Nos. 11 and 12 before the two halved the next three holes. She added another win on No. 16, and, after the two halved No. 17, Cummings emerged with the victory. MA. LELAND DEF. CARLSON 6-4 Maggie Leland had a very productive day. The former Cardinal player battled back Maxine Carlson of Alexandria for a 6-4 win to advance to today’s quarterfinals. Carlson was the first to gain an advantage as she parred No. 3, but Leland used back-toback par victories for a 1-up lead. She added to that lead with a par win on No. 8, then followed that up with a birdie win for a 3-up lead heading to the back nine. Once there, Leland added another birdie victory, then increased her lead with wins

9

by par and double bogey. After Carlson edged out a par win on No. 13, Leland ended the match with a par win of her own on No. 14. MO. LELAND DEF. CHESLEY 3-2 Molly Leland played consistent golf, and that’s just what it took to move herself into today’s competition. Mariah Chesley of Mankato also had a consisten round, but Leland’s was just a little better. Opening with a par win, Leland quickly took the lead, but both golfers played stroke for stroke through the next five holes. Chesley tied the match on No. 7 when she birdied the hole and that’s the way it remained at the turn. Chesley took the lead despite notchin an ugly seven on No. 10, but Leland repaired the damage with back-to-back wins on par and birdie to regain the lead. On No. 14, Leland won by par to go up three, then cinched the win with a birdie on No. 16. WOMENS’ DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP WEDNESDAY RESULTS UPPER BRACKET Betsy Aldrich def. a buzzsaw known as Brian Bloedorn yesterday. Bloedorn won six of the first seven holes, highlighted by a birdie on No. 6. All Flesch could do was match Bloedorn’s pars on Nos. 2 and 8 before finally winning a hole on No. 9 with par. Bloedorn padded his lead to six with a par on No. 10. Flesch notched a birdie win on No. 12 but it wasn’t nearly enough. Bloedorn’s par win on the 13th hole gave him a 6-5 victory. TESSMER DEF. FLUEGEL, 4-3 Steve Tessmer of Hood River, Oregon caught fire on the back nine to stop Alexandria’s Mike Fluegel, 43. Tessmer held a slim 1-up lead at the turn after notching par wins on Nos. 3, 5 and 8 while Fluegel won Nos. 4

and 7 with par, birdie. The back nine belonged to Tessmer as he won three of the first six holes – birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 followed by a match-sealing par win on No. 15. PEDERSON DEF. PROCHNOW, 5-4 Jeff Pederson played flawless golf on the first seven holes, carding six pars and one birdie (No. 5), giving him a 4-up lead over Dan Prochnow of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Pederson made his first and only mistake of the day, a bogey on No. 8, but Prochnow couldn’t do any better on the hole. Prochnow notched his lone win of the match on No. 9 with a par but trailed by three at the turn. After matching Prochnow’s par on No. 10, Pederson won Nos. 11 and 12 with par, birdie to take a commanding 5-up advantage. He nailed down the win by halving the next two holes with pars.

Freeman fights for today’s spot Defending champion Jon Freeman of Chanhassen was pushed on Wednesday but found a way to survive and advanced in the first round of championship play in the Men’s Executive Division. Qualifying medalist Tim Peterson and Darryl Schomer also did what they had to do as the Execs get ready to battle for a spot in the semifinals when they tee off from the first tee at 1:12 p.m. today. J. FREEMAN DEF. TESSMER, 2-1 Alan Tessmer showed how close the Executive Division could be this year by sticking with the defending champ all afternoon. In the end, Freeman did enough to secure his spot in the second round as he outlasted Tessmer down the stretch. J. JOHNSON DEF. EIDSVOLD, 3-1 Jeff Johnson of Chaska used a steady start on the back to earn a 3-1 win over Alexandria’s Brian Eidsvold.

GUSTAFSON, 6-5 John Butina of Cottage Grove had a furious charge on the back to run away with things early in his 6-5 win over Inver Grove Heights’ Patrick Gustafson. Gustafson went 1-up after par wins on Nos. 11 and 12. From then on, it was all Butina. He birdied the par-3 13th and put it on cruise control after that by posting four straight par wins. Butina would go on to play 2-under over his final nine holes. His birdie on No. 1 put him at 5up before a par win on the 3rd ended things early. S. FREEMAN DEF. LARSON, 3-1 The champion from two years ago played his best down the stretch as St. Cloud’s Stefan Freeman used a charge on the front nine to win 31 over Maple Grove’s Jeff Larson. Larson held a 1-up lead after a par win on 18, but it was all Freeman on the front. He took Nos. 2, 4 and 6 before closing it out with back-to-back par wins on 7 and 8. PASSOLT DEF. before Passolt pulled out a win in 20 holes. It was a rollercoaster ride from the get-go for both players. Bullard started out with two straight wins before Passolt took 12 and 15 to even things back up. A birdie on 17 gave Bullard the lead heading onto the front. Both players continued to play almost flawless golf once they got there. Bullard went birdie, birdie on Nos. 1 and 2 to take a 3-hole lead. He then could only watch as Passolt birdied No. 3 for what was the first of three straight wins that evened things back up heading into No. 6. It was there that Bullard looked like he might have the final say as he eagled the par-5 before taking 7 with a par for a 2-up lead with two to play. It turns out that was plenty of time for Passolt to make a move. Bullard opened the door for him with two bogeys and he took advantage, parring Nos. 8 and 9 to force a playoff. Both men bogeyed No. 1 before Passolt finally ended a thriller with a par win on the 2nd. HEIMSNESS DEF. LELAND, 4-3 Woodbury’s Eric Heimsness jumped out to a torrid start that would have made it tough for anyone to keep up in a 4-3 win over Alexandria’s Bruce Leland. Heimsness was 4-under after his first three holes after birdying Nos. 10 and 11 and eagling the par-5 12th. A par win on 14 moved him to 4-up before Leland was able to answer with a win of his own on the 15th. Heimsness never let him get any closer. Another birdie win on 18 put him 4-up going into the front. The two halved their first three holes once they got there before Leland took 4 with a par. Heimsness answered right back with a par win on No. 5 before the two tied the 6th to

end things early. C. JOHNSON DEF. O’CONNOR, 4-2 Chad Johnson of Burnsville built an early lead and held on late to upend AGC Superintendent Donnacha O’Connor in a 4-2 match. Johnson built a 3-hole lead after the 12th before O’Connor slowly battled back. He took 13, 15, 16 and 18 as he completed the comeback and evened things up at the turn. Johnson’s fast start on the front proved to be the difference. A birdie on 1 and a par on 2 got him the lead back before a par win on the 4th moved him to 3-up. It was a lead he would not relinquish as he ended the match after 7 with another par win. BOWEN DEF. GARDINER, 3-1 Alexandria’s Greg Bowen highlighted another close match in this division by closing out strong in a 31 win over John Gardiner. Gardiner took a 1-up lead onto the front only to watch Bowen jump ahead with wins on 1 and 2. The two halved the next four holes before a par on the 7th and a birdie on the 8th secured the win for Bowen. PETERSON DEF. TAX, 5-4 Co-medalist Tim Peterson of Lino Lakes picked up right where he left off during his qualifying round by taking a 5-4 match against Sartell’s Steve Tax. Tax was good but Peterson was lights out in the opening round. He got birdie wins on Nos. 10, 14 and 18 to take a 2-hole lead onto the front. He answered with par wins on the 1st and 4th before wrapping things up with a birdie win on 5. DILLEY DEF. CUMMINGS, 5-3 Dave Dilley recovered from a slow start to storm past Steve Cummings of Chaska. The Alexandria golfer fell behind by two after the first two holes but controlled the match after that. He birdied 12 and 17 and got par wins on 13, 15 and 16 to take a 3-hole lead

after their opening nine. Cummings got a win on No. 1 before Dilley put things away down the stretch. He parred Nos. 4, 5 and 6, all for wins, to end things early. WAGNER DEF. T. JOHNSON, 2-1 Todd Wagner of Austin, Texas outlasted Maple Grove’s Thomas Johnson in a 2-1 match. Neither player was able to separate themselves by more than two holes throughout the afternoon. Things were all even after a win by Johnson on the 5th. Wagner responded by birdying the 5th to take the lead back. He answered that with a par win on No. 7 as he held on for the victory. LYCZEWSKI DEF. KRANZ, 6-5 Crookston’s Mark Lyczewski was able to put it on cruise control after moving 5-up over his first nine holes against Sauk Centre’s Mark Kranz. Kranz got his first win of the day on No. 1 but the damage had already been done. Lyczewski followed with a birdie win on 2 before par wins on 3 and 4 ended it. ABRAHAMSON DEF. HAFDAL, 6-5 Former champion Tom

15

Abrahamson was on his game in a 65 win over Bill Hafdal. The 1999 titleholder from Wayzata got a birdie wins on Nos. 11 and 14. He never looked back from there, winning Nos. 16, 17 and 18 before putting the match away after 13. HAUGEN DEF. M. GUSTAFSON, 5-4 Chris Haugen of Alexandria built a narrow lead on the back and took control on the front in a 5-4 win over Carlos’ Mike Gustafson. Haugen built his lead to 2-up after a birdie on No. 1. He went on to take Nos. 3, 4 and 5 to put the match away. Gustafson led early with wins on 10 and 12 but lost his lead for good after wins by Haugen on 13, 16 and 17. SCHOMER DEF. OLSON, 5-4 Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud used a run on the back to build a big lead that he never relinquished in a win over Jon Olson of Hopkins. Schomer took Nos. 10 and 11 with pars to get his day started. He added par wins at 13 and 17 and birdie wins at 14 and 16 to take a comfortable lead onto the front. Olson battled EXECS Page 22

Two former champs still in the hunt in Men’s Division Two former champions in the Resorters Men’s Division kept their repeat chances alive yesterday. Last year’s winner Donald Constable of Deephaven eked out a 1-up win while 2008 titlist Tyler Whiting had a little easier time of it, clinching his match on No. 14. The medalist, Mark Giorgi of Red Wing, also survived a scare, taking his match on the 18th hole. Two competitors who have Resorters Junior Division titles were bounced out of the competition – former Alexandrian Jack Dressen (Constable’s opponent) and Sean Halverson of Baxter. One other Junior Division champ is still in it to win it – Joey Shroyer of Victoria (the 2008 winner). Today’s action begins from the No. 1 tee at 1:48 p.m. Here’s how the “Sweet 16” advanced yesterday: CONSTABLE DEF. DRESSEN, 1-UP The defending champ had to overcome a variety of obstacles in his second round match – Dressen’s birdie win on the opening hole, Dressen’s flawless 3-under par play on the back nine, and the fact that Constable never won a hole after No. 11. But the Deephaven 20-year-old did it with a barrage of birdies and a match-changing eagle. Trailing by two after three holes, Constable won No. 4 with par and added back-to-back birdie wins on Nos. 6 and 7 to steal the lead. Constable surged ahead with two more back-toback wins – an eagle on No. 10 and a birdie on No. 11 to go 3-up. Dressen played very well and kept looking for opportunities but Constable hung tough. He matched Dressen’s birdie on No. 12 and his pars on No. 13 and 14 to preserve his lead. Dressen finally notched a par win on No. 15 and drew to within one with a birdie on No. 16. Constable ended the match with solid pars on the final two holes to seal a 1-up victory. HAFDAL DEF. BLACK, 1-UP. The scorecard of the John Hafdal/Bennett Black match has a plethora of 3s – 11 of them, in fact, which shows how well they played. But Hafdal carded seven of those 3s and that gave him the edge. Hafdal of Prior Lake won the first two holes with birdies. Black of Alexandria got on track with a par win on No. 4. Hafdal’s birdie “3” on No. 5 followed by a birdie win on No. 6 put him 3-up. Black won Nos. 7 and 9 with par, birdie but Hafdal broke the run with a par win on No. 8. Leading by two at the turn, Hafdal carded another birdie “3” on No. 10 to go 3-up. Black rallied with a birdie win on No. 12 but fell victim to Hafdal’s par 3 on No. 13. Black made things exciting by notching wins on Nos. 14 (birdie) and 15 (par) to close the gap to one. After both golfers halved No. 16 with pars, the match ended, coincidentally, with both of them shooting nothing but 3s on the final two holes, giving Hafdal a 1-up win. STRANDEMO DEF. PETERSON, 2-1 Seventeen-year-old Thomas Strandemo of Fargo outlasted Eric Peterson of Benson, 2-1 to advance to today’s second round. Match details weren’t available because a scorecard wasn’t turned in. MONTPLAISIR DEF. WEBSKOWSKI, 4-3 Jacob Montplaisir of Gilbert, Arizona put together a string of six straight wins to upend Paul Webskowski of Plymouth, 4-3. Montplaisir won No. 1 with birdie but Webskowski staged a quick comeback, winning the next three holes with pars. After they both parred Nos. 5 and 6, Montplaisir started his amazing streak, winning No. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 with par, birdie, par, par, birdie and an eagle. Montplaisir was suddenly 4-up. Webskowski stopped the bleeding with a par to halve No. 13 but he could only match Montplaisir’s pars on the next two holes, which ended the match.

KLEIN DEF. DIEKMAN, 1-UP. Alexandria’s Gordy Diekman played good golf against Dan Klein of Phoenix, Arizona but he couldn’t keep the momentum going long enough to take the lead. Klein also showed a dogged determination to hang on to an advantage. Klein won the first two holes and the match seesawed back and forth until the 9th hole when Klein won to go 3-up at the turn. Diekman won Nos. 11 and 12 to draw within one but Klein countered with a win on No. 13 to go 2up. Diekman again rallied, taking No. 14 to get within one but Klein held firm, halving the next hole and winning No. 16 to go 2-up once again. Diekman mounted one last attack, winning No. 17 but couldn’t take 18. Klein prevailed, 1-up. FOWLER DEF. SHOLTS, 3-2 A strong showing on the front nine carried 17year-old Austin Fowler of Grand Rapids to a 3-2 win over 18-year-old Chris Sholts of Alexandria. Fowler picked up five wins on the front – Nos. 2, 3, 6 and 7 with birdies and No. 4 with a par to take a comfortable 5-up lead at the turn. Sholts finally broke through with back-to-back birdie wins on Nos. 10 and 11 to trim the margin to three, but Fowler took No. 12 with yet another birdie to go 4-up. Sholts prolonged the match with wins on Nos. 13 and 14 but the match ended on No. 16 with Fowler leading by three. VANGSNESS DEF. HAUKOM, 3-2 Alexandria’s Ben Vangsness was a 3-2 winner over C.J. Haukom of Marshall. Details of the match weren’t available because the scorecard wasn’t turned in. MONDA DEF. MEYER IN 22 HOLES In the division’s longest battle of the day, Tyler Monda, 21, of Brainerd outlasted Grady Meyer, 16, of West Fargo. The match took 22 grueling holes to determine the winner. Details were not available because the scorecard wasn’t turned in. GIORGI DEF. SWEDBERG, 1-UP Giorgi’s play wasn’t quite as hot as the 68 he carded for his medalist round but his 1-under par round was good enough for a 1-up victory over Alexandria’s Derek Swedberg. Giorgi won three holes on the front, all birdies, on Nos. 2, 4 and 7. Swedberg, meanwhile, struck for wins on Nos. 6 (birdie) and 9 (par) and trailed by one at the turn. After they both halved No. 10 with pars, Giorgi delivered two crucial birdies to win Nos. 11 and 12 to go 3-up. Swedberg snapped back in the match with a par win on No. 13 and forced the match into the final hole with a par win on No. 17. The match ended on the 18th green with pars. JOHNSON DEF. BLACK, 5-4 In a battle of Alexandrians, Luke Johnson breezed to a 5-4 victory over Bryant Black. Details of the match were unavailable because the scorecard wasn’t turned in. HEINEN DEF. PAULSEN, 5-4 A 3-under start on the front nine was enough to give Alec Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma a 5-4 win over Alexandria’s Nick Paulsen. Heinen won five holes on the front – Nos. 1, 3, 4 with birdies and Nos. 7 and 9 with bogey, par. Paulsen didn’t win a hole until the 10th when he birdied to cut the lead to four. After they both halved No. 11 with pars, they both birdied No. 12 and bogeyed No. 13. Heinen clinched the match with a par win on

No. 14. PETERSON DEF. TEAL, 3-2 In a shootout between 17-year-olds, Sam Peterson of Benson outgunned Jack Teal of Excelsior, 3-2. Teal drew first blood with back-to-back par wins on Nos. 3 and 4. Peterson fired back with a birdie win on No. 5 and another birdie blast on No. 7 to draw even. Peterson added another bullet on No. 9 – a par that gave him a 1-up lead at the turn. On the back nine, Peterson kept firing away, winning Nos. 10, 11 and 12 with two birdies and a par. Teal answered with a bogey win on No 13 but after that the fireworks were over. Bogeys on No. 14 and pars on Nos. 15 and 16 for both competitors handed the match to Peterson. WHITING DEF. ROSE, 5-4 Tyler Whiting of Eagan didn’t give Mike Rose of Salt Lake City, Utah many opportunities yesterday. In their 14-hole match, Whiting stumbled just once, a bogey on No. 8, which Rose ending up winning. Aside from that, Whiting shot nothing but pars or birdies. Whiting won four holes on the front, Nos. 1, 4, 7 and 9 to take a 3-up lead at the turn. Rose won No. 10 with a birdie and birdied the next hole as well but so did Whiting. Whiting also birdied No. 12 to go 3-up, added a par win on No. 13 and sank another birdie on the 14th hole to ice the match, 5-4. KLEIN DEF. BRUNDELL, 5-4 Geoff Klein of Mankato sizzled on the front nine against Nick Brundell of Alexandria. Klein won Nos. 1 and 2 with birdies, No. 4 with bogey, No. 5 with par, and Nos. 7, 8 and 9 with pars. Brundell, meanwhile, was able to win just two holes – No. 3 with par and No. 6 with birdie. Leading by five at the turn, Klein showed no signs of cracking on the back nine. He matched Brundell’s par on No. 10, his birdie on No. 11 and his par on No. 12. Brundell prolonged the match with a par win on No. 13 but it wasn’t enough. Klein won No. 14 with a birdie to win it, 5-4. HAFDAL DEF. HALVERSON, 1-UP Alexandria’s Jesse Hafdal played a steady round of 1-under par golf en route to defeating Sean Halverson of Baxter, 1-up. The match was all-square after the first nine holes – both golfers won four holes on the front. Hafdal started the back nine in style, with two birdies to go 2 –up. Halverson battled back with a birdie win on No. 12 only to lose the next hole to Hafdal’s par. Halvorson stormed back with par wins on Nos. 14 and 15 to tie the mach. Hafdal stopped the bleeding by halving the next two holes and won the match in dramatic style with a birdie on the 18th green. SHROYER DEF. DUNCAN, 2-1 In a battle between two Victoria teenagers, a trio of wins to start the back nine propelled Joey Shroyer to a close win over Aaron Duncan. Shroyer won just one hole on the front, a birdie on No. 1 while Duncan took Nos. 5 and 6 with par, birdie. That’s when Shroyer kicked his game up a notch, winning Nos. 10, 11 and 12 with birdie, birdie, eagle to go 2-up. Duncan sliced the lead to one with a par win on No. 15 but Shroyer sealed a 2-1 victory with a par win on the 17th hole.

Big guns still in the hunt for Masters’ title An eight-time winner and a four-time Senior champion are all still going strong as the Masters’ Division championship flight got underway yesterday. Defending champ George Mikesh of Scottsdale, Arizona fell 5-3 to Erik Hanson of Stowe, Vermont, while Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold, Rancho Mirage, California’s Bob Wernick and Benson’s Jerry Peterson also picked up wins in the upper bracket. In the lower bracket, six-time Masters and twotime Senior champ Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida emerged with an 8-6 win over Clayton Pike of Billings, Montana. He will be joined by four time Senior champ George Cliff of Mankato, Pat Vincelli of Rosemount and Martin Garber Jr. in the quarterfinals today beginning at noon. UPPER BRACKET HANSON DEF. MIKESH After Hanson opened with three straight wins as the Masters Division took off from the 10th tee, things continued to look up for the Vermont golfer. Those three wins came on bogey, par and par. He halved the following three holes with defending champ George Mikesh, but took off once again, winning with par, par and bogey for a 6-up lead heading to the first tee. There, the two shared No. 1 before Mikesh

DEHAVEN 1-UP, 19 HOLES Greg Dehaven of Spicewood, Texas was the early leader in this match, going up by three after seven holes on two pars and a birdie, but Peterson began to rally with a birdie win on No. 17. Peterson cut his deficit to one with a par win on the first hole of the front nine before Dehaven went back up by two with a par win on No. 5. From there, Peterson chipped away at that lead, winning by par on both Nos. 6 and 9 to even the match, sending action into extra holes, where Peterson emerged with a 1-up win in 19. EIDSVOLD DEF. GLANVILLE 3-2 Concentration and resolved served Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold well in his match with Peter Glanville of Scottsdale, Arizona. Glanville was the early leader, winning Nos. 10, 12 and 14 on pars for a 3-up lead, but Eidsvold rebounded, winning No. 15 with a bogey. Glanville got that hole back with a bogey win of

The front nine proved to be Eidsvold’s friend as he won five of the next seven holes with bogey, par, par, par and birdie to cut the match short and earn a 3-2 win. WERNICK DEF. SEAVALL 4-2 Bob Wernick found his way to today’s quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over Steve Seavall of Spicewood, Texas as he won four holes on the back nine. Wernick took the first two on a birdie and a par before Seavall won No. 14 with his own par. Wernick rebounded nicely to take Nos. 16 and 18 on pars for a 3-up lead at the half. On the front nine, Seavall birdied the opening hole to cut the lead to two, but Wernick claimed Nos. 4 and 7 for himself, earning the win. LOWER BRACKET CLAYTON DEF. PIKE, 8-6 Although he missed a year of competition at the Resorters, Ron Clayton hasn’t lost his edge as he defeated Clayton Pike 8-6 yesterday. Clayton easily made his way around the back nine, winning Nos. 11, 13, 15, 16 and 17 on pars, throwing in a birdie on No. 12 to take a 6-up lead at the turn. Heading on to the front nine, Clayton parred both Nos. 2 and 3 to end the match. CLIFF DEF. BERG 4-2 George Cliff moved into the quarterfinals as he defeated Loren Berg of Alexandria 4-2. CHIP SHOTS The Worldʼs Longest Golf Course is the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, a long par 77, 8325-yards, from the tiger tees. The Worldʼs Highest Golf Course is the Tactu Golf Club in Morococha, Peru, which sits 14,335 feet above sea level at its lowest point. The Longest Hole in the World is the 7th hole (par 7) of the Sano Course at the Satsuki Golf Club in Japan. It measures a long 909 yards. The Worldʼs Largest Bunker is Hellʼs Half Acre on the 585-yard 7th hole of the Pine Valley Course in New Jersey. The Worldʼs Largest Green is that of the 695-yard, 5th hole, a par 6 at the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, with an area in excess of 28,000 square feet. When the golfer feels the ball make impact with the driver face, the ball has already been hit and is actually 14 inches away on its trip down the fairway. No matter how fast you may think the bodyʼs neurons and brain can process information, the impact between the driver and the ball is much faster! What this means also is that if you have a golfer who likes to feel the ball on the face to ʻwork the ball,ʼ that golfer better move quick! Balls travel significantly farther on hot days. The ball velocity, launch angle and backspin amount will NOT change as temperature increases or decreases, but a golfer with a 100mph swing speed will carry the driver

opened No. 10 with a birdie, then added a win with a bogey on No. 11 Cliff cut back the lead with a par on the following hole, then took his first lead as he won by par on both 15 and 16. Berg rebounded to par both 17 and 18, regaining his lead and a 1-up advantage heading to No. 1. It was on the front nine that Cliff began to shine as he fired off six par wins to move on. eight yards longer for each increase in air temperature of 25°F. Changing a driverʼs face angle 1 degree changes shot direction by 5 yards. At a carry distance of 200 yards and all other swing factors being equal, changing a driverʼs face angle by 1 degree results in a sideto-side change in shot direction of five yards. This is the main reason face angle is such a powerful fitting aid for accuracy improvement. There is no such thing as over spin on a golf ball at the moment of impact. Even when using a putter, the ball leaves the clubface with some backspin. Only when the ball settles on the ground and begins rolling will the backspin reverse and turn into over spin. The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an average LPGA professional; 84mph for an average male golfer; 108mph for an average PGA Tour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-152mph for a national long drive champion. The next time you hear someone say professional golfers are not athletes, clue them in on this. 1 mph of swing speed increase = 1.5mph of ball velocity increase = 3 yards of carry distance increase.

Thereʼs a long-standing myth that the word “golf” is an acronym of Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. Which is amusing, but unfortunately complete rubbish. The word actually stems from original 15th Century spellings that included “gouf”, “goulf”, “goiff” and “gouff” (indecisive lot, 15th Century Scots). Golf was actually outlawed in Scotland in 1457. James II was the killjoy behind the ban – he was preparing for an English invasion and wanted his citizens to concentrate on useful hobbies like archery. The ban was eventually lifted quite some time later, in 1502. Ever wondered where the golfing term “birdie” comes from? It seems we have an American named Ab Smith to thank. While striding around a course in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time. (“Bird” was 19th American slang for anything really, really good. Kind of like “cool” is for us.)
Dormie, the golf jargon word referring to a player decisively leading a game, comes from “dormir”, a word of shared French and Latin origin which means “to sleep”. In other words, the playerʼs so far in front he can afford to sleep.

There are more than 50 million golfers in the world. Americans spend more than $600 million on golf balls every year. The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million. The putter is the most-used club in golf. Putters generally come in three styles of club head, and three varieties of lengths. Club heads can be a traditional blade, a heel-toe club head, or a mallet club head. Initially golf balls were made out of wood. After that they were made out of leather stuffed with feathers. Tightly-packed feathers made balls that flew the farthest. Feather balls were used until 1848. There are three golf balls on the moon. The worldʼs first ever golf tournament for women was held on New Yearʼs Day 1811 at Musselburgh.

There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.

The most holes-in-one in a career is 68 by Harry Lee Bonner from 1967 to 1985.

The longest putt in history was measured at 140 feet and 2 3/4 inches on the 18th hole at St. Andrewʼs golf course. It was shot by Bob Cook on October 1, 1976.

125,000 golf balls a year are hit into the water at the famous 17th hole of the Stadium Course at Sawgrass (pictured).

There are approximately 11,000 golf courses in North America.

The longest drive ever is 515 yards. The longest putt ever is a monstrous 375 feet.

Golf buffs may cry “Sacrilege!”, but thereʼs an alternative version of the game in existence. Invented in 1989, Golfcross uses big suspended nets instead of holes, and the balls are oval – like golf balls crossed with eggs. There are dedicated courses from New Zealand to the UK, if youʼre feeling adventurous.

back with two wins on Nos. 1 and 2 but Schomer put things away with a birdie on No. 5. MARLOW DEF. HAGEN, 22-HOLES It was the buzz among the scoreboard watchers yesterday: “Where were Chad and Al?” All the other competitors in the division had been done for some time except for those two. They were out duking it out on their fourth extra hole. Chad Marlow of Wichita, Kansas finally emerged the winner, carding a routine twoputt par on No. 13 to beat Al Hagen’s bogey. The match, however, was anything but routine. The duel began on the back nine where Hagen pulled out front with par wins on Nos. 13 and 14. Marlow battled back to win Nos. 15 and 17 with pars and took the lead at the turn with a nifty birdie on the 18th green. Hagen hung tough on the next few holes,

winning Nos. 2, 3 and 4 with birdie, par, bogey to regain a 2-up lead. Marlow countered with a par win on No. 6 and drew even with a birdie on No. 8. Pars on the last regulation hole forced sudden death. The overtime also featured some drama: On the first extra hole, Hagen chipped in a shot from behind the green to save par and keep his hopes alive. Marlow, however, had the last laugh with his solid par on the 22nd hole of the match. EXECUTIVE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP WEDNESDAY RESULTS – Freeman def. Tessmer, 2-1; Johnson def.
