CHAMPS ALL RETURN FOR 98TH RESORTERS By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com here are often minor changes from year-toyear at the Resorters Golf Tournament, but one constant is that there will always be plenty of good players vying for championships in their divisions. That’s true again this year as the Alexandria Golf Course gets ready to kick off the 98th Resorters Tournament on Sunday with a pro-am and qualifying rounds as the match-play event runs through Aug. 3. “(AGC Superintendent) Donnacha (O’Connor) and his staff have this course in phenomenal shape,” AGC head pro Kyle Lee said. “This place is ready to go for Resorters.” Lee is in his first season helping to run this tournament of nearly 300 golfers after the Alexandria native played in it himself multiple times over the years. One change to the field is the addition of a Grand Masters Division, which will feature some of the longest-tenured players in this event. It’s a small field with Alexandria’s Dave Harris and Tom Eidsvold and Clayton Pike of Billings, Mont. and Gary Obele of Becker being the only entries. They will play a version of a roundrobin tournament and get the chance to compete against players more in their age bracket. “It was the players coming together and they did a lot of work themselves internally to make it happen,” Lee said. “Just to compete again at a high level. These guys have been competing against each other for decades, so it’s a

“Whether it’s Division I, II, III, they’re golfers who have been experienced in tournament play. It’s knowing you have a good field of competent golfers, and it’s pretty special.” All eight of the 2018 championship flight winners are back at AGC again this week. Davis Johnson of Chaska aged out of the Junior 13-15 Division after winning it last summer and is in the Men’s Championship field now. Junior 10-12 champ, Charlie Moen of Edina, also moved up to the 13-15 division. “I think Resorters is a pretty unique deal in the sense that it’s a lot of the same families and same players who come back year in and year out,” Lee said. “When you have someone who has won a tournament and gone through the whole experience, they become kind of a favorite in town. Johnson adds to trophy case with 13-15 Resorters title Chaska native goes back-to-back with 3-2 win
the front nine, so I was kind of steadyeddy through there.” Johnson defeated Cole Harste 3-2 for the championship win, shooting 3-over par over 16 holes. “It’s cool,” Johnson said of goingback-to-back. “It’s a fun time, and I can’t wait to move up next year with the big boys. That will be fun.” Johnson’s day started like Harste’s: pars on Nos. 1 and 2 for an all-square deadlock. Johnson took his first lead when he birdied No. 3, and then he doubled his advantage with a par win on No. 4. Harste returned within a hole when he birdied No. 6 for his first win of the day. And after Johnson and Harste swapped par wins on Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, Johnson had a 1-up lead to take into the turn. Johnson bogeyed No. 10, but it was still good enough to win the hole and move to 2-up. Combined with a par win on No. 11, Johnson had his largest lead of the day at 3-up.
By Micah Friez Davis Johnson continued a family tradition during last year’s Resorters Tournament. Johnson’s older brother, Lincoln, has made deep runs into the Men’s Championship Division and has a Junior 10-12 Division title in the Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club. His dad, Jeff, is a former champion in the Men’s Executive Division. So for Davis, who clinched his second straight Junior 13-15 Division championship, last year’s final round was just par for the course. “The putter got a little hot at the end,” said Johnson, a native of Chaska. “I didn’t really make many mistakes on
Harste made his run on Nos. 12 and 13, though. He birdied No. 12 to beat out Johnson’s bogey, and then Harste parred No. 13 to top a Johnson double bogey. “I kind of struggled on 12 and 13,” Johnson said. “I hit one OB on 12 and hit it over the green on 13 to make for kind of an impossible up and down. I just kind of kept my cool and played smart coming in and ended up finishing it off.” Harste’s quick spurt made for a onehole difference, but Johnson ran away
with things from there. After a par win on No. 14, Johnson carded a birdie on No. 15 for a 3-up advantage. The lead became insurmountable after Johnson matched Harste’s par on No. 16, and soon after he had a trophy to lift as a repeat champion. With a year to prepare for the Men’s Champion field, Johnson had a new challenge waiting for him. So will he be ready? “I think so. It should be,” he said after last year’s win. “We’ll get it ready.”

Sister showdown By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Herzog sisters had not played each other in a match-play championship until last year’s final round at the Resorters, and the older sister got the better of her younger sibling in that debut. Stephanie Herzog, who was a sophomore with the University of Iowa last fall, was on her game from the get-go in the title match. She built a lead of 6-up through 12 holes on Leah, a recent graduate at Red Wing High School, as Stephanie won 4-3 to secure her first Resorters championship. “I’ve never really loved match play,” Stephanie said. “I prefer stroke play, so it was really good to overcome those negative thoughts I had going in of match play. Especially the last two days, I just went in and really stayed calm and didn’t really worry about the match at all and instead just worried about my game.” Stephanie was calm and steady throughout the title match. She birdied No. 1 to go 1-up before Leah took it back with a par win on 2. Then at No. 3, Stephanie stuck her approach shot on the par-five to within 10 feet and sank an eagle putt to negate a birdie by Leah. “That was probably a momentum turner,” Stephanie said. “I won four and five again. My wedge game was really good today.” Leah opened the door a bit with a few bogeys and a double on No. 4, and Stephanie took advantage. She finished her round at 4-under before the match ended. “The first seven holes she played, she didn’t play very good for her,” Stephanie said. “Obviously, I’ve played with her a lot since we’re sisters. I could tell she wasn’t quite on her game, and I was playing quite well.”

Red Wing native Stephanie Herzog (right) goes to give her younger sister, Leah, a hug after the two played for the Women’s Division title at the Resorters Tournament in 2018. Stephanie won the match 4-3 to secure her first championship at the tournament. Leah’s best moment of the round came on No. 14. She had just avoided elimination on No. 13 with a par win and had to keep winning to extend the match. On the par-5 14th, Stephanie stuck her approach shot to within about two feet, for what would have been a tap-in birdie to win it. But Leah followed by sinking her approach shot from more than 50 yards out for an eagle that extended things another hole. The shot drew a smile from both sisters. “It was kind of nice for
her too because I knew she wasn’t playing her best,” Stephanie said. Stephanie had to find her game a bit throughout the week. She didn’t like the way she had played through her first two rounds of match play, but she came on during a 5-4 win over Osakis’ Alayna Eldred in the semifinals and then again in the championship. The Resorters is part of a summer where Stephanie said she’s averaged about 64 holes a week as she aimed to keep sharp going back into Big
Ten play. She capped off the week with her first Resorters title, a championship she hopes is not her last at AGC. “This is like my highlight of the year, tournament-wise,” Stephanie said. “I have my family here, and Sophia (Yoemans) comes, who’s a good friend of mine. It’s just a really fun atmosphere. It’s pretty chill and the course is beautiful.” Leah and Stephanie are both set to return for the 2019 tournament as entries in the women’s field again.

Kyle Lee returns to Alexandria to serve as AGC’s head golf pro By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Kyle Lee grew up from the time he was about 12 years old playing at the Alexandria Golf Club every chance he got until he graduated from high school in 2000. Now Lee is back and leading AGC as its new head golf professional. It’s been a bit of a waiting game at the Alexandria Golf Club for Lee. When his family first moved to Alexandria from Bagley in 1991, he had to get a membership at another local course because there was a waiting list to become a member at AGC. “I waited two years on the waiting list to get in to AGC and then basically lived here till I graduated high school,” he said. In the back of his mind, Lee knew he

Sigel returns to Resorters fresh off qualifier win for US Amateur Championship By Nick Hunter Minnesota Golf Association The Resorters Tournament always features talented players from around the country, and Ben Sigel is an example of that as he joins the men’s championship field this year fresh off a win at a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championship. Helped by an eagle and two birdies over his final nine holes July 22 at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club, Sigel, a University of Kansas golfer, posted a secondround 5-under par 67 to earn medalist honors and a spot in his third consecu-
tive U.S. Amateur Championship. Sigel opened Monday’s qualifier with a round of even par 72 before finishing the 36-hole event one stroke better than Pepperdine University’s Derek Hitchner and two strokes clear of North Dakota State University’s Van Holmgren, who claimed the final two spots to this year’s championship, Aug. 11-18 at the historic Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina. “I got off to a slower start this morning, but I stayed patient all day. My irons weren’t very sharp
today, but I was able to make a good amount of putts and didn’t really force anything,” Sigel said after qualifying Monday. “All the pins were tucked, so you’ve got to pick and choose when you go at them. I think I did a good job of managing my game and hitting the right spots. “I decided not to play in the [Minnesota State Open] to prioritize a little bit and get ready for today. After qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Amateur the last two years, I’d

Sullivan tops Aldrich in Women’s Execs rematch Alexandria native wins her third title over 30 years later
By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Alexandria native Jodi (Krafka) Sullivan lost in an 18-hole match to Minnetonka’s Betsy Aldrich in the Women’s Executive Division championship during the 2017 Resorters Tournament. In 2018, Sullivan returned the favor. In a rematch of the 2017 finals, Sullivan stepped onto the 18th green needing to match Aldrich’s par to avoid a playoff. She faced an unfamiliar uphill putt from about seven feet and calmly sent it in, celebrating with a fist pump and then a hug with Aldrich. “I was nervous,” Sullivan said. “I haven’t had any uphills all week. I’ve had downhill (putts), where you’re just kind of trying to guide them to the hole. All of a sudden, I’m facing an uphill for the first time.” Sullivan was 1-up going into the 18th hole after neither player could separate themselves all day. Aldrich struck first with a par win at No. 1. Both birdied on No. 3, and that 1-up advantage for Aldrich stood until Sullivan won with a birdie on No. 8. Another five holes went by before Sullivan grabbed her first lead of the day at No. 14 with

Alexandria’s Randy Johnson lines up a putt on the 11th green during his Masters Division championship round against Ron Way last year. Johnson got his first Resorters championship in 2018 as he beat Way in a 5-4 final.
By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Alexandria’s Randy Johnson and his family had been waiting on a Resorters title for almost 70 years. At family outings, the conversation always came up: Who’s going to win a Resorters championship? Randy’s wife, Deb, and her family started playing at the Alexandria Golf Club in 1949. In the years since, many family members had made a run at the Resorters, including Randy himself for more than two decades. Finally, after a memorable week at AGC, Randy ended that drought by taking home the Masters Division title last summer. “This is something we’ve been working on,” Randy said. “We talk about it every year. At Christmas time, we say, ‘Who’s going to win
the Resorters this year?’ We finally got one.” Johnson took on fellow AGC member Ron Way in the Masters Division championship on last year and came away with a 5-4 win. Both men had a tournament to remember. At 80 years old, Way battled his way through the tournament as the 15th seed and won tight matches in 19 holes, 2-up and 1-up. Johnson went into the championship coming off of perhaps his most memorable round at the Resorters in his entire life. He was down four holes through 11 against two-time defending champion, Dan Elton of Moorhead. Johnson stormed back from there, winning 1-up with a birdie on the 18th hole.

would like to return to the area someday, even after moving a long way away to pursue a career in golf for many years after graduating from St. Cloud State University in 2004. Lee grew up learning the game predominantly from his grandparents and getting his feet wet at the Bemidji Town and Country Club. He became a member of the Cardinals golf team in high school after moving to Alexandria and played for them from his sophomore through senior year. In 2000, he was part of the Alexandria team that made a state tournament. Lee has worked at AGC before, serving as an assistant golf pro under thenhead pro Ron Rebrovich starting in 2006. He worked in that capacity for a few years before heading to Phoenix to work at a course in Arizona, while also spending his summers working at clubs in Park City, Utah and Orono in Minnesota. Phoenix had been the place he called home for the last 15 years, and he enjoyed it there. “I wasn’t waiting for another job,” Lee said. “I was content with my job down in Arizona. It’s just one thing led to another. It was a perfect storm that led
me to here.” Family is part of what brought him back to Alexandria. Lee, 37, and his wife are expecting their first baby in early August. Coming back home at this time was a chance to start an allnew chapter in their lives. “Alexandria is tough to beat when you’re raising a family,” Lee said. “My wife, Ashley, is expecting our first baby Aug. 7, so right around Resorters, which is going to be a stressful time. That’s always been a goal of mine at some point in my life to come back to Alexandria. When the opportunity arose, it was great to be able to leave Phoenix and have an opportunity to raise our kids in Alexandria.” The combination of switching jobs, moving across the country and a new baby on the way has made for a hectic first month on the job for Lee. He officially started on May 21, and said the help of the entire staff at AGC has made a crazy time in his life a better transition. Brittany Ellingson (assistant manager), Jeremy Holmstrom (restaurant manager), Karen McCarthy (kitchen manager), Lisa Grimes (director of instruction) and Lindsay Fluegel (general manager) are all a part of the team out there. Lee’s job as the head pro takes on different responsibilities. He helps teach lessons, along with helping members get their offi-
cial handicaps for multiple leagues that run weekly at AGC. Lee also helps organize and run the bigger tournaments at the course such as the member/guest, the club championship and the Resorters. That week-long Resorters Tournament starts July 28 with a pro-am and runs through Aug. 3. More than 300 players will take part in what is the 98th running of the match-play event. Lee played in it himself during his younger years in Alexandria. Now he is bracing for a busy week as he settles into his first time running the Resorters, knowing that the birth of his first child could potentially fall during the same time. “One thing I’ll say about Resorters is it’s a tight-knit group, whether it’s your first year or 30th year playing Resorters,” Lee said. “Once you’re in, it seems it’s a big family base and we’re out enjoying AGC together. It’s going to be stressful for me because there’s so many moving parts. There’s over 300 contestants and making sure it runs flawless, all the while knowing my wife could go into labor at any time. It’s going to be interesting, but at least I’m going to have that family structure I believe where if something does happen, between the boards and committees that make Resorters happen, I’ll be able to lean back a little bit and count on them.”

a par. Then on 15, she sank a long putt for a birdie win that would prove to be the difference in the match. “It was the first one I got to the hole,” Sullivan said. “That was huge. The thing is, the putt was moving. It hit the hole hard. On these greens, you want to just die them into the hole. This one was moving, but it went in.” Aldrich came right back with a par win at 16, but both players parred No. 17. That set up the dramatics of the 18th hole. Sullivan had a nice drive but didn’t quite get her approach shot over a ridge that sits on the front of the 18th green. Her ball rolled back down and off the green, while Aldrich had a long putt for birdie. She missed, and Sullivan hit her third shot a bit short but within a makeable distance to win with the par. “I tried to not get too down on myself,” Sullivan said of her
second shot that came back off the green. “I had a perfect distance for sand wedge, but it was sitting up. It was one of those shots where I didn’t want to take a big divot because, with my sand wedge, I could fly over. I just kind of went under it.” Sullivan had friends and family there to congratulate her after the win, including her three children, who are triplets. It’s because of them that she got back into golf after nearly two decades away after she had a decorated high school career in Alexandria and then collegiately at the University of Minnesota. “It is fun,” Sullivan said. “I really put away the clubs for about 20 years. I had a family, but when they were getting to about 10, they showed an interest. I said, ‘If I get back into it, I can go with them.’ So it was me getting back into it so I could get them into it.” Sullivan won Resorters titles in the Women’s Division in 1985 and 1987. Now she can add another one to the list and has a chance at another this year as she returns to the women’s executive field.

like to think that I’m good at qualifying. I lost [in a 24-for-1 playoff at Pebble Beach] last year, so my goal is to make the cut and see what happens. I’m excited to get to Pinehurst.” Playing his first four holes at 3-over par Monday, Sigel battled back by making four birdies over his next eight holes to move to 1-under before a late bogey put him at even par after the first 18 holes. Beginning his second round on the 10th tee, Sigel got started by sinking a 5-footer for birdie at the 12th before hitting his tee shot off the tee at 17 into the penalty area, leading to bogey to fall back to even par for the round. Finding his stride at the 18th, Sigel rolled in a 15-footer for birdie before reaching the par-5 third in two, sinking a 20-foot putt for eagle to quickly jump to 3-under for the tournament. “I knew I was in a good spot,” Sigel said of his eagle on his 30th hole of the day. “I thought [3-under] was going to be the number and I was lucky enough to get a couple more coming in.” After getting up-anddown for birdie from short of the sixth green, Sigel rolled in one final putt from five feet for birdie to
finish at 5-under 139 and punched his ticket to North Carolina next month. “Each time I’ve qualified, I’ve shot between 1-under and 1-over for my first round,” Sigel said. “The courses are always set up pretty tough and I knew [even par] was fine, after my start I was pretty happy with it. I put myself in a position to make a run on my last nine and I did.” Sigel, a prep standout while at Minnetonka High School, began his summer by finishing 19th at the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta in early June and then notched a fourthplace finish a week later at the Monroe Invitational in Rochester, N.Y. After missing the cut by one stroke at the TransMiss Amateur Championship two weeks ago, Sigel turned in a final-round 66 last week to finish in a tie for fourth at the MGA State Amateur Championship. He will begin his junior season at Kansas this fall. Sigel has been a regular at the Resorters Tournament in Alexandria in recent years. He has been a contender in the men’s championship field the last few years and comes into the 2019 tournament still searching for his first men’s title. He won the 2014 Junior 13-15 championship at the Alexandria Golf Club. (Echo Press sports editor Eric Morken contributed to this piece.)

“(That), obviously, was the highlight of the whole week, coming back from four down against the defending champ,” Johnson said. “I came out (Saturday) and got off to a good start. Went 3-up after three, and it kind of stayed that way.” Johnson used pars on the first three holes to take that early advantage. Way got one back with a par win at No. 6, but it was one of only two wins on the day for Way. He also took No. 10 with a par. Johnson countered by using a par win at No. 8 to take a 3-up advantage into the turn. Par, birdie and bogey wins on Nos. 11-13 then put the match away after both players parred 14. “The driver for the most part was pretty solid,” Johnson said. “I don’t think I really hit a bad drive, a bad pull left or a big push right. I always had a second shot. That was solid, and I putted great again. I had a three-putt on No. 6, but that was the only bad putt I made. The rest were solid, and when I needed to get up and down, I pretty much did.” Johnson said he has seen Way putt a little better than he did on Saturday. He knew he would have to play a good round to win and perhaps overcome some nerves. At least he thought that would be the case going into the day as he played in his first championship round. “I’ve been nervous before where I can hardly put the ball on the tee,” Johnson said. “That didn’t happen. I was not as ner-

Johnson hangs tough in Men’s Execs
He downs four-time champion Schomer By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com
After winning the second hole in the Resorters Men’s Executive Division final with a birdie, Troy Johnson of Maple Grove clamped down on the lead like a bulldog. He didn’t give up any ground, downing the division’s four time champion (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017) Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud, 3-2 to take the 2018 title. “I led all the way from that point on,” Johnson said. “I played well for most of the round. I had some hiccups in the middle but hit a great shot on No. 15. I was about 100 yards out and put it two feet away and that got me to 3-up with three to play.” This was the first time Johnson had played in the Resorters in 23 years. He was lured back by a bunch of friends – 20 or so were staying in the same group – who came to Alexandria for the tournament. One of them was Nate Adams, also of Maple Grove, who was the runner-up in the Men’s Championship Division. The Resorters trophy joined a lot of other hardware Johnson has brought home over the years. He’s won the Minnesota State Open, three Mid-Ams, a Public Links, and a Mid-Players tournament twice. But the Resorters win is still a highlight for Johnson. “Absolutely,” he said. “Anytime you win a tournament it’s fun to get into the mix.” Johnson made it into the final round by rolling past Alexandria’s Dave Dilley, 7-6, on Saturday morning. It was an impressive 4-under par outing, highlighted by birdies on Nos. 1, 5, 6, 8 and 12. Johnson also got off to a quick start against Schomer, who won his semifinal against Larry Monplaisir of Phoenix, Arizona, 2-1. Johnson landed in the bunker on No. 1 but got up and down to tie Schomer. He followed that up with the birdie win on No. 2 and won the fourth hole when Schomer ran into putting problems. Johnson drilled another nice putt on No. 5 to go 3-up, a lead that held through the turn. Schomer just couldn’t get his game going and was four behind after 11 holes. Schomer won the par-5 12th to pull within three and looked to be on the comeback trail when Johnson went out of bounds on No. 14. That’s when Johnson’s deadly accurate approach on No. 15 led to a birdie that all but put away the match. It ended a hole later. Johnson and Schomer are both back this year as they try to add to their Resorters legacy.
Troy Johnson of Maple Grove putts during his Executive Division final against Daryl Schomer at the Alexandria Golf Club on Aug. 4, 2018. Johnson beat Schomer, a four-time champion, by a 3-2 final to take his first Resorters title. Al Edenloff / Echo Press

Alexandria’s Chris Haugen blasts his way out of the sand on the 10th hole during the 2018 Resorters Tournament. Haugen took down Jon Empanger of Chaska during the final round last year to win his second straight Senior Division title at the Resorters Golf Tournament. Eric Morken / Echo Press
Back-to-back champion Alexandria’s Chris Haugen grabs another Resorters title By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Alexandria’s Chris Haugen thought for sure he would have to make quite a few birdies in order to beat eight-time Resorters champion Jon Empanger in the Senior Division championship last year. It did not turn out that way. Haugen got a couple birdies - one on No. 6 and another on No. 11 - but it was his overall steady game all day that allowed him to come away with his second straight Resorters title. “I couldn’t make a lot of putts today,” Haugen said. “Fortunately, I made a lot of pars, some key par saves, and he didn’t make a lot of birdies. That helped. He’s steady, he’s in the fairway on every hole, but I made a lot of pars. That ended up being the difference on a bit of a windy day where pins were a little bit tucked on some holes. Pars were good enough today.” The match went to the 18th hole, but both players missed birdie putts and settled for pars as Haugen won 1-up. Empanger, from Chaska, saw his birdie attempt roll around almost every inch of the cup before lipping out. Haugen said he missed some putts down the stretch that could have helped him avoid going to the 18th hole, but it was a putt on 13 that proved to be a difference maker. He hit into the sand on that hole and bladed his bunker shot almost over the green, leaving him looking at a likely bogey loss. Instead, he sank a near 50-footer for a par to halve the hole with Empanger.

“I think that really turned the match around,” Haugen said. “(I) was 2-up, and I’m sure he thought he was going to (win one back) because he was 15 feet for birdie. I knocked that in and he two putts and I’m still 2-up. I missed a number of putts coming down to the end that would have made it a little easier on myself, but he’s a competitor. I knew he wasn’t going to go away, and I just couldn’t put him away.” Empanger stayed two down through 15 before he cut his deficit to one

by winning 16 with a par. Haugen remained steady from there, parring Nos. 17 and 18 to secure the win. After coming up short in previous years at the Resorters, Haugen made himself the man to beat in the Senior Division the last two summers. “I think my ball striking is the key,” he said. “I can hit it a long ways, and that helps me on a lot of holes. That gives me an advantage on a number of them. I just wasn’t able to take quite as much advantage as I was hoping on some of them today.”
It capped off a big week for him as he qualified with a 2-under 70 and then grabbed 8-6, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 1-up victories during a busy week of match play. “It was really fun to have all the friends and family out watching,” Haugen said. “The first (championship) is pretty fun. This is nice. There was a great field, and to win five straight matches is hard.” Haugen will go for his third straight title now as he returns for the 2019 tournament.
