PLENTY TO SMILE ABOUT Resorters week for Johnson includes qualifying for U.S. Senior Amateur By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com he Resorters Golf Tournament is a week-long vacation for many who participate in this event. It’s about playing competitive golf, yes. But it’s also about socializing with friends and family. The day off between qualifying and when match play starts for those in the Men’s Executive Division is a good time to do just that. Relax. Maybe have a few drinks and hang out on one of the many lakes Alexandria has to offer. For Eden Prairie’s JT Johnson, there was no relaxing on his day off. Instead, he used Tuesday to travel to Waconia and play in another tournament — one that ended up qualifying him for the U.S. Senior Amateur at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C. Aug. 24-29. “It’s not that long of a drive,” Johnson said from the Alexandria Golf Club on Thursday morning. “Two years ago, we moved to the west side of the Cities, so it’s a lot closer. Alexandria is such a special place. It wouldn’t matter to me if it was a five-hour drive. I would do whatever it takes to be here, but I didn’t want to give up an opportunity.” Johnson, who will be 56 next week, said he feels like he can be competitive in national amateur events at the senior level right now, so missing that qualifier in Waconia was not an option. He thought he might have to

I was very, very fortunate to just finally find something in my putting game. I went two months and it was agony. I said to my wife, ‘I may never be a good player again.’ I went to an instructor and found myself hitting the ball better than I ever have in my life, but could not get the ball in the hole from three feet. MEN’S CHAMPS
Believe in Belisle
Cecil Belisle takes down second-ranked Ben Sigel in playoff it. After swapping pars on No. 3, Lehman won Nos. 4 and 5 with par, birdie but Freeman turned the tables by winning No. 6 with birdie and Nos. 7 and 8 with par to steal the lead. Then it was Lehman’s turn. He won Nos. 9 and 10 with pars to take the lead but Freeman rallied again, notching a birdie on the next hole to tie the match. Undaunted, Lehman knocked in an eagle on the par-5 12th hole to take the lead for the fourth time. After halving the next hole, Lehman went 2-up with a par win on No. 14. Freeman could only match Lehman’s par on No. 15 and Lehman salted the match away with a par win on the 16th hole. For the round, Lehman was 1-under while Freeman was 2-over.
By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com After 18 holes of play between 18th-ranked Cecil Belisle and second-ranked Ben Sigel, the match was all squared. As Belisle made the walk from the 18th green to the first tee box, he watched dozens of carts filled with spectors pass him. The moment of going to a playoff against the secondranked player in the tournament didn’t get to him. “I think it’s more fun when all of those people are watching,” Belisle said. “I wasn’t nervous, I just wanted to finish it in 18. But a win is a win and it feels good. I feel relaxed now.” Belisle isn’t the only underdog who continues to make waves. Jim Hoselton, the 30th seed, has beaten thirdranked Lincoln Johnson and 14th-ranked Josh Galvin on back-to-back days. On top of his match-play wins, he took second in the longest drive competition and first in the putting contest. “It’s been a blast, an absolute blast,” Hoselton said. “My buddy, Peter Wilson, has wanted me to come out and play in this tournament for a few years. This is my second year back. To compete at a high level with a bunch of collegiate players has been a good experience for me.” Here is a recap at how all eight quarter-finalists got to Friday.
Choe def. Kelber, 6-4
The defending champ found himself down early but it was only a blip on the radar as he cruised to a convincing 6-4 win over Jacob Kelber of Southlake, TX. Choe won the second hole with par but Kelber answered with a par win on No. 3 and

was his original plan again. That’s why he was disappointed to see that the Senior Division started its match play on Tuesday. “My buddy Eric Heimsness when I told him that he said, ‘Well, JT why don’t you just play in the Execs. You’ve done it before,’” Johnson said. “There you go. It was just, ‘I’m going to go to the Resorters on Monday. I’m going to drive back and stay in my own bed. I’m going to get up in the morning and try to qualify for the national senior event and sleep in my own bed again. Then I’m going to drive up and play my first match on Wednesday.’” The schedule fit perfectly, and his game

Choe quickly quashed the lead with a birdie on No. 5 and moved ahead with another birdie on the next hole. Choe ended the front with a birdie win on No. 8 and his bogey was good enough to take No. 9, putting him 3-up at the turn. After halving the next two holes with par, Choe took command, winning three straight holes with birdie, par, par to secure the victory.
McCarthy def. Jarrett, 3-2
On the wings of two eagles, Miles McCarthy of Excelsior built a small lead on the front
this week could not have gone much better either. Johnson qualified at Resorters as the third seed in his field when he shot an even-par 72. On Tuesday, he was in Waconia at the Island View Golf Club for that qualifying event. He shot a 2-under par 70 and finished with a share of medalist honors with Tom Whaley. Both will play in North Carolina later this month as Johnson competes in his fourth USGA championship. Johnson’s round in Waconia featured five birdies. He bogeyed No. 17 to drop him back to 2-under, but an up-and-down par putt from about 10 feet below the hole on 18 sealed the deal. That put him on cloud nine heading back to Alexandria on Wednesday morning. The Executive Division
nine and held on to a 3-2 win over Nick Jarrett of Rochester. McCarthy started the match in style – knocking down an eagle on the par-4 first hole and adding a par win on No. 3. Jarrett bounced back with a par win on the next hole but McCarthy took the par-5 No. 6 with his second eagle. Jarrett made par on No. 7 to draw within one, but McCarthy struck back with a par win on No. 8 and held a two-hole lead at the turn. McCarthy continued his sizzling round with a birdie on No. 11 to go 3-up. After swapping birdies and pars on the next two holes, Jarrett crept back into the match with a
teed off from the 10th box from AGC at 1:10 p.m. Johnson was ready to go. He not only won to move into the round of 16, he took care of Tony Kucera as quickly as possible, finishing the match in just 10 holes. The 9-8 win came after shooting 4-under with three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 12th. On Thursday, he won a 3-1 match against John Nemec to advance to the quarterfinals. “I was very, very fortunate to just finally find something in my putting game,” Johnson said. “I went two months and it was agony. I said to my wife, ‘I may never be a good player again.’ I went to an instructor and found myself hitting the ball better than I ever have in my life, but could not get the ball in the hole from three feet.”
par win on No. 14. McCarthy, however, closed the door on a comeback by winning No. 16 with a birdie. On the day, McCarthy was 3-under par while Jarrett was 1-over.
Lehman def. Freeman, 3-2
Two young golfers with a history of golfing greatness in their families, battled for 16 holes before Thomas Lehman of Alexandria came away with a 3-2 victory over Will Freeman of St. Cloud. Lehman took the first lead with a birdie on No. 1 but Freeman charged back with a birdie on the next hole to tie
Johnson went searching for help to get back on track with his putter. “I went online and found an instructor who had a couple things to teach, and implemented those,” he said. “In my qualifier (at Resorters) with Geoff Klein, I loved watching him hit the ball. I figured he hit it better than I did, but I putted better than he did. If I could take that putting exhibition to my qualifier for the U.S. Amateur, I thought that I’d be fine.” His play on the green carried him on Tuesday as he finished the round with just 25 putts. “If you have 25 putts in a qualifier, you’re going to be the qualifier most of the time,” Johnson said. “Somehow, the switch flipped where I went from the worst putter in the state to now being
This one resembled a boxing match with Dylan Naylor of Fargo trading punches with Chaska’s Clay Kucera through 20 holes before Naylor delivered a birdie knockout. Naylor won Nos. 1 and 4 with birdie, par but Kucera recovered with back-to-back wins on Nos. 6 and 7 with a birdie and par. Naylor countered with a par on the 9th hole to go 1-up at the turn. Kucera quickly erased the lead with a birdie on No. 10 and moved into the lead with a par win on No. 13. Naylor stopped the bleeding with a par win on No. 14 to deadlock the match. After that, neither golfer budged for the next five holes. They birdied No. 15 and parred Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to send the match into overtime.

a good putter again. It changes everything.” It’s made golf fun and competitive again for the longtime tournament player. In addition to qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur, Johnson almost made the field at the U.S. Senior Open in May. He missed qualifying for that by one stroke and served as an alternate. That allowed him the opportunity to go to the tournament at Notre Dame’s Warren Course in South Bend, Ind. “It was just an absolute ball,” Johnson said. “The USGA bent over backwards for me and allowed me to be a participant in the practice rounds. I played with Darren Clarke, I played with Vijay Singh, I played with Duffy Waldorf and got to meet Steve Stricker and had dinner with Bernhard
Langer and Tom Lehman.” It’s been quite a summer for Johnson, and it’s not close to being over. Johnson has two more big tournaments to play near the end of August right before heading to the U.S Senior Amatuer. First, he has some unfinished business at the Resorters this week. Johnson has made runs all the way to Saturday at this tournament, but he is still looking for that first title. “I said after Tuesday, this is all gravy,” Johnson said. “If I get beat by somebody, I’m still going to walk into the clubhouse, shake his hand and have a beer, say hi to everybody and then quietly go home. If someone beats me, they beat me. I’m still a blessed guy who has a lot of great golf to look forward to.”

BELISLE
“I feel good right now,” Belisle said. “If I could putt a little better that would be awesome. If I keep hitting the ball the way I am, especially the driver, I think we’ll be right where we need to be.” This is Belisle’s third Resorters and his second time playing in the Men’s Championship Division. For him, winning comes secondary, but it makes the trip to Alexandria more enjoyable. “When I come here I just want to have fun,” Belisle said. “I want to do good when I’m here, but this is my last tournament of the summer and I’m looking to have a good time.”
From Page R3
Not too surprisingly, both golfers birdied the first extra hole and it took Naylor’s birdie on No. 2 to take down Kucera.
Belisle def. Sigel in 19 holes
Sigel was one of the favorites to come out of the Men’s Championship Division. After beating Jordan Krulik 6-4 on Wednesday, the Kansas Jayhawk had his hands full with Belisle, a recent Red Wing High School graduate. Sigel’s leads were short-lived. After winning holes one and four, Belisle responded to square the match. Belisle went up one on the par-5 sixth hole, but couldn’t carry the lead over to the back nine as Sigel evened the match on hole eight. Belisle took a two-hole advantage after winning holes 11 and 12. However, Sigel responded by cutting his lead to one on 13. “I had a two-hole lead and I felt like I should have been able to win without the playoff,” Belisle said. “He was a hard guy to beat.” Sigel squared the match on the 17th hole. After a draw on 18, the players walked across the road over to the first tee box. Sigel’s drive went to the left of the fairway, leaving an opening for Belisle to take advantage. One playoff
Boraas def. Montplaisir, 4-2
Alexandria’s Noah Boraas is going to have an exciting match against Belisle after beating the 26th-ranked Cade Montplaisir 4-2. Montplaisir advanced to face Boraas after Wednesday’s upset win over seventh-ranked Andrew Israelson. His Cinderella run was cut short as Boraas moved on. Jared Rubado / Echo Press

Hoselton def. Galvin, 2-1
After knocking off the third seed on Wednesday, Hoselton kept his upset streak going by beating 14th-seeded Galvin, 2-1. “I’ve always felt like I’m a pretty good player and that I’m going to hang with whoever I’ve got that day,” Hoselton said. “I just need to believe in myself that I’m better than the guy

across from me.” Galvin went up one on the fourth hole before Hoselton won holes five and eight. After heading into the turn 1-up, Hoselton won the 10th with a birdie to go up two. Galvin cut his lead to one after Hoselton bogeyed 14. On the par-3 17th hole, Galvin bogeyed to seal another upset for Hoselton. The method to Hoselton’s success is simple – he plans to have fun. “We are going to have some Coors Light tonight and relax,” he said. “I’m going to get ready to hit fairways, make putts and stay grassy.”
Lindberg def. Adams, 2-up
Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, TX and Nate Adams of Maple Grove, a threetime champion in the Resorters junior divisions, halved 10 holes in their down-to-the-wire shootout. Lindberg won the first hole with a birdie and they tied on the next five holes before Lindberg knocked in a par on No. 7 to go 2-up. Adams won the next hole with par but Lindberg took No. 9 to maintain a two-hole lead. Adams drew closer with a birdie win on No. 10 but Lindberg delivered another birdie win on the 12th hole to go back to 2-up. Adams won No. 13 with par but could only tie Lindberg’s pars on the next four holes. It came down to the 18th where Lindberg’s par gave him a 2-up win.

R6 Resorters 2019 | Friday, August 2, 2019 JUNIOR 10-12
Rested and ready By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Junior 10-12 Division players got to take a break on Thursday after their semifinal round was set on Wednesday. They get going again on Friday morning at 9 from the 10th tee. Top-seeded Charlie Hanson of Morris will take on fourth-seeded Ashton Sladek of Alexandria. Second-seeded Carson Boe of Cottonwood will battle third-seeded Carver Larson of Alexandria, as well. Here’s a look back at how all four got to this point after their quarterfinal matches.
Hanson def. Grimsrud, 5-4
Hanson could not have ended his match with John Grimsrud any earlier in the nine-hole event as he won all five holes for the 5-4 win on Wednesday. Hanson wasn’t going to
leave Grimsrud any chance as he shot 1-under in his shortened round. He had par wins on Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 14 around a birdie win at the par-three 13th hole.
Sladek def. Guggisberg, 3-1
Sladek had to battle a little bit against Glenwood’s Zachary Guggisberg, but he finished his match well on his way to a 3-1 victory. Sladek won holes 10, 12 and 13 with pars before adding a birdie win at No. 14 to go 3-up around a win at 11 from Guggisberg. Guggisberg added his second win of the day at No. 16 with a par, but he opened the door a bit with a double bogey on the 17th. Sladek pounced on that opportunity as his bogey completed the win a hole early.
Boe def. Moen, 3-1
Boe won his match 3-1
Hanson, Sladek, Boe, Larson compete in the semis
against Henry Moen of Edina, and he did it by finishing down the stretch. Boe’s birdie at No. 11 gave him an early lead, but it was all square heading to the 14th. Moen opened the door from there. He shot 7-over par over his last four holes, and Boe took advantage of that with wins on Nos. 14, 16 and 17 to secure the win.
Larson def. Scholl, 4-3
Larson never trailed in his match with Blake Scholl of Alexandria as he methodically pulled away throughout the round. Larson used par wins at Nos. 11, 12 and 13 to take a 3-up advantage. That par run was halted with a bogey tie on 14, but Larson put the finishing touches on his win in style by carding a birdie on 15 to put Scholl away.

R8 Resorters 2019 | Friday, August 2, 2019 MEN’S MASTERS
Top seeds have big day By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Last year’s Master Division champion Randy Johnson of Alexandria kept his repeat hopes alive by knocking out Steve Tessmer of Hood River, OR, in 15 holes Thursday. And the golfers who finished with the three best qualifying rounds also survived – Norty Blanchard, Tom Ryan and Dave Battey. Ryan is the only one in the final four who isn’t from Alexandria. He lives in Minnetonka but feels right at home at AGC, having qualified with the second-best round of 77 and coasting to two fairly easy match-play victories, both by the same 5-4 margin. Will Ryan’s hot streak continue? Or will Johnson bring home his second Resorters trophy? Or will Battey, with a 1-over-par round yesterday, continue to sizzle? Or will the division fall to second-seed Blanchard, who has already toppled two wiley Resorters veterans in Jim Arnold and Al Strassburg? The answer will get a lot clearer Friday afternoon after the Master Division semifinals tee off at 12:10 p.m. from No. 1. Meanwhile, here’s a look back at Thursday’s action:
Johnson def. Tessmer, 4-3
Unlike Wednesday’s 19-hole marathon against George Cliff, Johnson never trailed against Tessmer. The defending champ won Nos. 3 and 4 with bogey, par, dropped the next hole with a bogey, but took Nos. 6 and 7 with back-to-back birdies and halved the next two holes to go 3-up at the turn. Tessmer made par on No. 10 to slice the lead, but Johnson hung tough, matching Tessmer’s par on the next hole and taking the par-5 12 with bogey. After both golfers parred No. 13, Johnson amped up the pressure, winning No. 14 with par. Johnson matched Tessmer’s par on No. 15 to seal the deal.

Mind-Reading the Masters
Photos by Al Edenloff / Echo Press
1 (from left). “Now that’s how you play it from there,” seems to be what Masters Division defending champion Randy Johnson of Alexandria was thinking on his way to a birdie on No. 6 yesterday.
2. “Why didn’t the ball follow the break?” That’s what Dan Elton of Moorhead must have been thinking when his putt on No. 6 went astray in his Masters Division match yesterday. 3. “Why did that not go in?” That thought must have gone through Norty Blanchard’s mind after his putt on the 6th green came oh-so-close to dropping in during his Masters Division match Thursday. 4. “Come on, that’s got to drop” seems to be what Al Strassburg of Clear Lake is thinking as he watches his putt on the No. 6 green in the Masters Division yesterday.
Battey def. Elton, 4-3
Dan Elton of Moorhead ran into a buzzsaw in Battey yesterday. Battey was 1-under par on the front nine and protected his lead on the back to post a 4-3 win. Battey was relentless in the early going, winning five holes on the front – Nos. 1 and 3 with birdies and Nos. 6, 7 and 8 with pars. Elton, meanwhile, salvaged one hole on the front, a birdie on No. 5, but trailed by four at the turn. Elton made a mini-comeback, taking No. 10 with par and No. 12 with birdie to pull within two, but Battey took advantage of Elton’s back-toback bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 to close the match. “I did not play nearly as well as I can and should,” said Elton after the match. “And
Dave played really well.”
Blanchard def. Strassburg, 5-3
Here’s a tip from Blanchard’s playbook yesterday: Shoot nothing but 3s or 4s on the front nine. Blanchard knocked down a birdie on the first hole, took No. 2 with par and then rattled off three straight wins on Nos. 5, 6 and 7 with par, birdie, par. Strassburg, meanwhile, managed to win just one hole on the front, a nice birdie on No. 4, but trailed by four at the turn. Blanchard didn’t cool off much on the back nine, drilling a birdie on the 10th hole to go 5-up. He then matched Strassburg’s pars on the next

Blanchard
two holes. Blanchard finally miscued on Nos. 13 and 14 with bogeys but Strassburg was only able to win 14. Another par by Blanchard on the next hole ended the match. After 15 holes, Blanchard was 1-under.
Ryan def. Chesley, 5-4
Robert Chesley of Mankato took the early lead with a par on No.4. It turned out to be the biggest highlight of his

round. Ryan won four holes on the front – Nos. 3 and 4 with bogeys, and Nos. 5 and 8 with pars – and held a three-hole lead at the turn. Ryan added two quick wins on the back – Nos. 10 and 12 with pars to go 5-up. He then matched Chesley’s pars on Nos. 13 and 14 to nail down the win.

JUNIOR 13-15
Boraas, Moen, Gogel and Werschay look for finals spots By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Junior 13-15 Division will get going again on Friday at noon from the first tee box after the four semifinalists had a day off on Thursday. It’s the top four seeds all still standing in Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas, Edina’s Charlie Moen, Thomas Gogel of Mission Hills, Kansas and St. Augusta’s Leo Werschay. Here’s a look at all of their paths to get here.
Hannah Boraas
Boraas breezed through her opening round with a 5-4 win against Colton Cavers. Boraas won four of five holes early in that match, and it set her up against fellow Alexandria golfer Bennett Olsen in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Boraas had a little bit more than Olsen down the stretch of that one as she won a 3-2 final. Boraas led by one heading to the front, but Olsen’s birdie win at No. 1 made it all square. That’s exactly where things stood after a birdie for Boraas at three and a bogey win for Olsen at four. After Boraas’ worst hole of the day saw her card an eight, she put it behind her to go par, birdie, par, winning all three holes
Boraas
Moen
Gogel
to suddenly put the match away.
Charlie Moen
Moen had to survive a scare early in his tournament to reach this point. He beat Mckenzee Sullivan in a playoff on Tuesday as he overcame an early 3-hole deficit. Things came a little easier on Wednesday against Minnetonka’s Zach Stennes as Moen won a 4-3 match. Moen fell behind by one hole after the 11th, but he quickly erased that with four wins over the next six holes to take command. Moen parred Nos. 12, 13 and 15 and added a birdie win on 17. Nothing changed at the start of the front. His par wins on Nos. 1 and 2 moved him to 5-up and then a bogey win on 5 helped seal the deal a hole later after both players parred No. 6.
Thomas Gogel Gogel,
the
second
seed,
Werschay
used a quick start with two birdies in his first eight holes to help him secure a 3-1 win over Tyler Wanous on Tuesday. He was even better in round two. Gogel shot a 36 on the back nine on Wednesday, and that helped him take a 4-up lead into the turn in a 6-5 win over Taeren Peterson of Alexandria. Gogel birdied Nos. 11 and 18 and then parred Nos. 1 and 3 to take command. That’s all it took as Gogel ended the match after No. 4 when both players parred.
Leo Werschay
Werschay’s week has played out a lot like Gogel’s in that he won a close match in his opener before running away in the second round. Gogel beat Zach Bloedorn 3-2 on Tuesday and then handed Christian Lillehaugen a 6-5 loss on Wednesday in a match that was close through seven holes. The match was separated by just one at that point, but Werschay pulled

It started on hole 17 with a par win before a birdie win on 18 moved Werschay to 3-up heading to the front. Lillehaugen opened the door
on the next four holes, and Werschay was happy to walk through it with wins on Nos. 1, 2 and 4 that ended things early. FRIDAY PAIRINGS - 1ST TEE Noon - Hannah Boraas vs. Charlie Moen; Thomas Gogel vs. Leo Werschay

Champ goes down WOMEN’S REGULAR
By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Whoever comes out of the Women’s Division this week will hoist their first Resorters trophy. Defending champion Stephanie Herzog of Red Wing and the University of Iowa could never quite pull even on the back nine on Thursday as Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka upset the top seed. Leah Herzog, Stephanie’s younger sister, has a chance to still win one for the family after she ran away with a win in the quarterfinals. Joining Leah and Woodhull on Friday at the first tee box at 12:30 p.m. will be Alexis Guggisberg of Glenwood and Madison Herzog of Detroit Lakes. Here is a recap of how each match played out on Thursday.
Woodhull def. Stephanie Herzog, 1-up
This match was all square after the front nine when Herzog used a par win at the ninth to erase a one-hole deficit. Woodhull had put the pressure on the top seed by that point, and she added to it with a quick win at 10 with a par. That 1-up advantage is a lead she never gave back. A birdie win for Woodhull on the par-five 12th proved to be the difference in the match. Herzog got back to within one with a par on 15. She then gave herself every opportunity

Leah Herzog def. Bigger, 7-5
Leah Herzog is only weeks away from heading to the Uni-
versity of Nebraska for her freshman season with the Cornhuskers, and she played the part of a future Big 10 player on Thursday. Herzog rolled to a 7-5 win against Alexandria’s Amanda

Bigger. After a bogey on No. 1 gave Bigger a lead, Herzog settled in. She birdied Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 as part of a stretch where she won five straight holes. Herzog’s lead at the turn was 4-up, and she got on another birdie run once she hit the back. Her three on No. 11 moved her to 5-up before a birdie on 12 and a par win at 13 ended it.
Guggisberg def. Arellano, 6-5
Ale Arellano qualified as the second seed in this bracket, but she ran into trouble quickly against Guggisberg and could never recover on Thursday. Guggisberg, a former University of North Dakota golfer, started her round out with a par and two birdies to take a 3-up lead. Her win at 7 with a par gave her a 4-hole advantage at the turn. Guggisberg never let up from there. She parred No. 10 to grab a five-hole lead and then another par at 13 ended things early after Arellano bogeyed.
Madison Herzog def. Eldred, 4-3
Madison Herzog, a sophomore at North Dakota State University out of Detroit Lakes, used a strong back nine to beat Osakis native Alayna Eldred, 4-3. Herzog was up just one at the turn, but her birdie win on No. 11 gave her some momentum. She never wavered from there. Her par win at 13 created some separation and then a birdie win at 14 gave her all the cushion she needed to seal the deal one hole later when both players parred. After day off, top seeds ready to battle By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Women’s Executive Division had the day after on Thursday before heading into the semifinals on Friday. The top-four seeds — the last two champions in Jodi Sullivan and Betsy Aldrich, along with Nancy Syverson and Pam Marlow — are all vying for a trip to the finals. They tee off from the first hole at 12:40 p.m. on Friday. Here is a look back at how all four got to this point.
Sullivan def. Caver, 7-5
Alexandria’s Jen Cavers led after a win on No. 2 against Sullivan in the quarterfinals, but a stretch of five holes covering both nines allowed Sullivan to run away with the 7-5 win. Sullivan grabbed her first lead on No. 4 and went 2-up with a birdie on No. 6. That lead stretched to three with a par win on nine. She carried that momentum right into the turn. Sullivan’s win on hole nine was the first of five straight holes she would take. She played at 1-under through the shortened back by parring Nos. 10, 12 and 13 with a birdie win at 11.
Syverson def. Beckendorf, 2-1
Syverson was in a back-and-forth battle all afternoon with Andover’s Heidi Beckendorf on Wednesday before a couple wins on Nos. 14 and 15 helped secure a 2-1 win. Beckendorf pulled things all square with a par win at 13 after she trailed by one at the turn. The momentum didn’t last, though, as a couple of bogeys opened the door for Syverson on 14 and 15 as she capitalized with par wins. Both players bogeyed No. 16 before pars on 17 secured the win for Syverson.
Aldrich def. Baker, 4-3
Aldrich said her qualifying round early this week when she shot a 71 with five birdies felt almost effortless. Her driver was working well that day and it set her up with plenty of quality looks at the green. She played well

again on Wednesday in the match-play quarterfinals, but Molly Baker of Arizona pushed her before Aldrich pulled away a bit at the end for a 4-3 win. Aldrich and Baker were all square after a par win on No. 6 by Baker, but Aldrich responded from there. She parred Nos. 7 and 9 to go 2-up at the turn and birdie wins at Nos. 10 and 12 put her in the driver’s seat. Baker got her lone birdie of the day at 13 to cut her deficit back to three. There was no comeback left in her, though, as Aldrich put the match away with a par on No. 15 to finish her round at 1-over par. By this point in her career, Aldrich knows the Alexandria Golf Club like the back of her hand. She’s been coming here for years and has a complete comfort with the course and how she needs to attack it. “You really feel like you know all the greens, and you know where to be careful,” she said. “You know where you have to be below the hole, so my comfort level here is 100 percent.”
Aldrich and Sullivan may be the favorites to win on Friday, but Aldrich wasn’t taking anything for granted after her win on Wednesday. “You can’t overlook anybody,” Aldrich said. “Look at Molly Baker. She took me to the 15th hole and I was only 1-over. You can’t ever let up here. It’s fun. There’s so many nice people and it’s nice to have the execs and not be playing with the young kids who hit it 40 yards by you. I would never look beyond anybody at all.”
Marlow def. Johnson, 3-2
Pam Marlow will be the next in line to try to knock Aldrich off after she used a solid start to her round on Wednesday to beat Tiffany Johnson of Maple Grove. Marlow had back-to-back birdies on holes two and three and then got a bogey win to go 3-up after five. The lone hole Johnson took came on No. 8 with a birdie, but Marlow’s third birdie of the round at 10 moved her to 3-up. Neither player could create any separation from there as they halved the next six holes to end things after 16.

Ready for round two
GRAND MASTER
By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The four members of the Grand Masters round-robin tournament are ready to go again after getting Thursday off. This division will tee off at 8:50 a.m. from the first box. Tom Eidsvold will take on Dave Harris and as Gary Obele battles Clayton Pike. Here’s a look back at how their first-round matches went.
Harris def. Obele, 1-up
Harris improved by a stroke from his qualifying round. His 18-hole total of 82 was enough to win the match-play contest against top-seed Gary Obele. After the back nine was completed, Harris and Obele were all square. Obele won holes 10, 13 and 17 but Harris responded to even the match each time. Harris took his first lead of the day with a par on hole four. The next five holes were even and Harris picked up the win. Obele shot an 84 on the day.
Dave Harris lofts his ball on the 17th fairway toward the green on Wednesday during his Men’s Grand Masters Championship Division match against Gary Obele.
Eidsvold def. Pike, 3-2
Tom Eidsvold had his back against the wall for a majority of the first nine holes. His opponent, Clayton Pike, won three of the first four and went up two early. Eidsvold cut his lead down to one with a par on 16. After the turn, Eidsvold won the first three holes on the front nine to go up two. Pike answered back with a birdie on hole four to go down one. However, after a par on six, Eidsvold’s birdie on seven clinched the win. Eidsvold is set to take on Harris on Friday at 8:50 a.m. on the first hole. Obele and Pike will tee off at the same time.

MEN’S EXECS
Perennial powers still standing By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Troy Johnson and Daryl Schomer have combined to win five of the last seven championships in the Executive Division and both players look like they might be on a path to compete for another one this summer. Schomer has four of those titles since winning his first in 2012. He almost got his fifth Resorters crown in 2018, but Johnson was standing in his way in a 3-2 win. On Thursday, Both Schomer and Johnson moved into the quarterfinals with 6-5 and 6-4 wins, respectively. Third-seeded JT Johnson had to fight off 19th-seeded John Nemec, but he got the job done. Mark Wanous needed an extra hole to advance, while Geoff Klein and Jerry Vetsch both won 3-2. Dan Johnson and 2014 champion Jeff Johnson round out the final eight. Here is a look back to Thursday’s action and how they all got here.
Troy Johnson def. Kowalczyk, 6-4
Troy Johnson rarely makes mistakes, and the end result is that you have to make plenty of birdies just to give yourself a chance. It didn’t happen for Chris Kowalczyk. Johnson was on fire from the get-go with a couple of birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 to take an early 2-up advantage. That was a sign of things to come as Johnson finished with six birdies on the day. His final one came on the par-five 14th, and it put the match away by a 6-4 final.
Photos by Eric Morken / Echo Press
Mark Wanous watches his approach shot from the first fairway on Thursday afternoon in the Men’s Executive Division.
Wanous def. Grossman, 19-holes
Wanous, of Eagan, and Brent Grossman of Carver were never separated by more than one hole on Thursday, but it was Wanous who was the last man standing after taking the first playoff hole. Grossman erased a 1-hole deficit after the first when he won No. 3 with a par and added a win on 4 to go 1-up. That’s how things stood going into the par-three seventh when Wanous’ par brought him even. A par win on No. 9 then gave him a little momentum at the turn. Grossman got that back quickly. His par win on No. 10 and a birdie win on 15 gave him another lead. It looked like that might be the winner, but a bogey by Grossman on 18 opened the door. Wanous took advantage with a par to tie it and then put the match away on the 19th hole.
Schomer def. D. Klein, 6-5
Schomer was simply steady through the front on Thursday, and when it came time to put the match away on the back, he did it with birdies. His birdie win on 11 moved him to 6-up against Dan Klein. Both players birdied 12, but that was one step closer to a win for Schomer as he took the match 6-5 when both players parred 13. Schomer jumped out early with a birdie win on No. 2. He then used par wins on Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 8 to take control of the match.
Vetsch def. Raymond, 3-2
Jerry Vetsch never trailed against Matt Raymond and had an answer for every time Raymond tried to rally. Vetsch was 2-up after a par win at No. 4. When Raymond got one back with a par on No. 7, Vetsch immediately won 8 with a birdie. The same scene played out on Nos. 9 and 10 as Raymond won 9 with a par and both players got into some trouble on 10 on a hole that Vetsch won with a bogey. Raymond’s lone birdie of the day got him back to within one on No. 11, but Vetsch answered with a birdie of his own for a win. Two holes later, Vetsch’s bogey was enough to steal 14 and give him enough cushion to come away with the win after 16.
Troy Johnson, the defending champion in the Executive Division, stares down his putt on the first green during his match against Chris Kowalczyk on Thursday.
JT Johnson def. Nemec, 3-1
A day after winning a 9-8 match in the opening round, JT Johnson of Eden Prairie had to work for things a little more on Thursday. Johnson matched up with John Nemec of Waite Park and had a run of three straight wins from holes six through eight that ultimately proved vital in a 3-1 win. That’s because Nemec had a run of his own after Johnson moved to 4-up with a birdie win on hole 12. Nemec responded to that with par, birdie, par to take holes 13, 14 and 15 and get back to within one.

MEN’S EXECS
Peter, never trailed on Thursday after taking a 2-up advantage with par wins at three and four. Paulsen won No. 7 with a par, but it was one of just two wins on the day for the Alexandria golfer. Klein was 2-up at the turn and made it a 3-up advantage with a birdie at 11. His response to a par win by Paulsen on hole 15 with a par win of his own at 16 put the match away.
From Page 21
Johnson has been in these moments plenty of times. He withstood that charge and carded a par on 16 that was good for a win before his birdie on the par-three 17th ended the match in style.
Jeff Johnson def. Marlow, 2-1
JT Johnson will meet Jeff Johnson in the quarterfinals after Jeff held off Chad Marlow in a 2-1 match. It was all about the back nine for Johnson. Marlow led this one by three holes at the turn after shooting a 39 on the front. He never won another hole. Johnson started his charge back with a birdie win on hole 11. Pars on Nos. 14 and 15 were enough to even the match and pars again on Nos. 17 and 18 completed the comeback and secured the win for Johnson.
Dan Johnson def. Petersen, 3-2
Andy Petersen of Albert Lea has been deep into this tournament plenty of times, but Thursday was not the start he was looking for against Elk River’s Dan Johnson. Johnson took hole one with a birdie and was ready to pounce for a 2-up lead on No. 2 when Petersen got into some trouble in the sand in the back bunker and had to settle for bogey. Even when Petersen settled in with a run of pars and then two birdies on Nos. 6 and 9, Johnson matched him on those holes to stay 2-up at the turn. It was another birdie by Johnson at No. 11 that moved him to 3-up. He rode that through the rest of the round as Petersen couldn’t get any closer the rest of the day.
Geoff Klein def. Paulsen, 3-2
Geoff Klein has visions of getting his first Resorters title this year, and those hopes are still alive after a 3-2 win over Nick Paulsen. Klein, the second seed from St.

This chip by Curt Howard of Bristow, OK rattled the pin on No. 6 during Senior Men’s play Thursday.
They’ve been here before Final four have 10 titles among them
By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com The winner of the 2019 Senior Men’s Division will be someone who has won a Resorters title before. The “final four” includes two-time defending champion, Chris Haugen of Alexandria; five-time champion in three different Resorters divisions, Steve Herzog of Alexandria; the 2016 Senior Men’s champion, Greg Mattson of Becker; and a two-time Men’s Division champion, Mark Lindberg of Coppell, TX.
All but one of them were seeded in the top four during qualifying. Lindberg, who was seeded fifth, pulled off a mild upset yesterday by defeating the fourth-seed Curt Howard of Bristow, OK. The pressure will crank up a notch Thursday afternoon when the Senior Men’s semi-finalists tee it up from No. 1 at 12:20 p.m. Here’s how they got there:
Haugen def. Davis, 3-2
In a match that seesawed back and forth all afternoon, Haugen outlasted
Haugen
Lindberg
Matt Davis of Woodbury. Haugen won five holes on the front – Nos. 2, 4 and 5 with pars and Nos. 6 and 8 with birdies – but this was no blowout. Davis still won three on the front – No. 1 with birdie, No. 3 with par and No. 7 with birdie – and was two down at the turn. Haugen kept his momentum going with a par win on No. 10 and a birdie win on No. 11 but Davis took the par-5 12th hole. Haugen countered with a birdie win on No. 13 to go 4-up but Davis mounted one last comeback by

taking No. 14 with par and No. 15 with birdie. The defending champ wasn’t about to be denied, however. He closed the match in style – a birdie to take No. 16, which ended the shootout.
Lindberg def. Howard, 3-2
The Lindberg-Howard match was closely contested from the get-go. Each golfer shot nothing but pars on the first three holes before Howard broke through with a par win on No.

4. After matching pars on the next hole, Lindberg tied the match with a birdie on No. 6. Howard struck back with a par win on No. 7 but Lindberg didn’t waver. He won Nos. 8 and 9 with par to go 1-up at the turn. Lindberg scored another win on No. 11 with birdie and then the match settled down with three straight ties. Lindberg
Herzog def. Gardiner, 2-1
In the closest and best played match of the day, Herzog edged John Gardiner of Deephaven, 2-1. Those 6s that pop up on scorecards from time to time? That didn’t happen in this match. Herzog was 1-under-
par for the day while Gardiner was 1-over. Gardiner grabbed the lead with a birdie on the first hole but Herzog birdied the next hole to tie it. After swapping pars on the next three holes, Herzog took No. 6 with birdie. Both golfers made par on the next two holes before Herzog won No. 9 to go 2-up at the turn. After carding nothing but pars on the next three holes, this time it was Gardiner’s turn to break the logjam. His

birdie on No. 13 put him one hole down. Bother golfers parred the par-5 14th. Herzog then moved to 2-up with a par on the next hole. Nothing but pars on the next two holes preserved Herzog’s victory.
Mattson def. Novotny, 5-3
A 3-up lead through nine holes helped Mattson put away Alexandria’s Larry Novotny. Novotny won the first hole

with par but Mattson strung together three straight wins with a bogey on No. 3, and pars on Nos. 4 and 5 to go 2-up. After halving the next three holes with pars, Mattson tacked on another par win on No. 9. Novotny parred the next two holes but didn’t gain any ground. Mattson made birdie to take No. 12 and go 4-up. After halving the next two holes with bogey, par, Mattson iced the match with a birdie on No. 15.

By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com The Men’s Regular Division’s first flight is down to a final four, and it features the top three seeds and a 14 seed. Jake Erickson of Hastings qualified with an 88 on Sunday, but he has stepped up once the tournament turned to match play. Erickson beat third-seeded Mason Kulics 4-2 on Wednesday. He then got by 11th-seeded Cole Harste on Thursday. The two wins for Erickson sets him up with a matchup against Sam Franklin of Maple Grove. Franklin, the second seed, beat Louie Stuck in his opener before taking care of Carter Kranz in the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Parker Hill beat Dillon Pieri in his opening match on Wednesday. That sent him into a match-up against Jack Suedbeck that Hill won 3-1 to advance to the semifinals. Hill will meet Kyle Hardwick on Friday. Hardwick, from Minneapolis, won a 4-3 match in his opener against Dan Schilling. He then beat Matt Bozoian 5-3 on Thursday.
