Vacationerwelcome W hat’s more fun than summer in Minnesota? Having lived here most of my life, I can honestly say, I can’t think of anything. It’s a time to head outside as the sun warms your face, the lakes call your name and the fireflies dance for your pleasure. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and here at the Vacationer, we want to share all this with you. July and August are the pinnacle months of the summer season, and this issue will get you in touch with what’s in store. The lakes area is filled with celebrations as nearly every small community has special days set aside to celebrate its history. The lakes here are spectacular! Boating, fishing and waterskiing opportunities are everywhere, but my favorite is a quiet pontoon ride and a long Lori Mork VACATIONER EDITOR evening on the dock watching the sun go down. It relaxes my mind and settles my soul. If you love to golf – this is the place! We have nine golf courses
waiting for you to tee off. But if you’d rather watch, we will be celebrating the 91st annual Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club July 29 through August 4. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of professional golfer Tom Lehman, a native of Alexandria, who is often on the sidelines of the tournament. You’ll find talented artists from around the state displaying their works at Art in the Park this July. I never fail to find something wonderful to bring home when browsing through the booths. I know as you look through the Vacationer, you’ll find something that sparks your interest here in the Alexandria area. Every day is filled with possibilites. We’re happy you’re here!

Y
ou’ll be amazed when you visit the 37th annual Art in the Park as exhibitors from around the midwest display their talents at the Alexandria City Park July 28-29. Art in the Park has come a long way
since its humble beginnings in 1976. The fine arts and crafts show, promoted as “Central Minnesota’s finest outdoor craft festival,” has grown from about 15 vendors to about 180. The Alexandria Area Arts Association (AAAA) event draws crowds and exhibitors from throughout the state of Minnesota as well as from several other states. Art in the Park also includes a variety of ethnic foods and entertainment. The event was originally held at Legion Park in Alexandria, and its

purpose was to offer the community a chance to see and purchase the fine art of local artists. The show still lives up to its original high standard of fine art and high-quality crafts. All art exhibited is handmade by the artists. The event is now held at Alexandria City Park, nestled along the tree-shaded shores of Lake Agnes and Lake Henry, just off Highway 29 North. Proceeds from Art in the Park are used to maintain and improve the Alexandria Area Arts Association Theatre.

Visit the Douglas County Historical Society and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years. Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 and built a small house on the property in 1874. As his political career progressed, he made additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900 and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor and four more bedrooms on the second story in 1915. Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that following the death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be

August 10-12 marks the 30th annual Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Spruce Hill Foundation. The Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival has about 100 members, all dedicated to keeping farm history alive and each year about 3,000 people attend the Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival. ing how farming was done before combines and modern farming technology. Each year the festival has three steam engines, which are run from gas or steam depending on the model, and three threshing machines. Steam engines burn either wood or coal and travel at a speed of 2 miles per hour. Old fashioned farming equipment isn’t the only attraction at the festival – kids will also find plenty to do. Erickson’s Petting Zoo comes to the threshing grounds each year, and the festival organization also built a new play set for children to enjoy. To top it off, there are fun old fashioned games like a quarter hunt in a pile of sawdust, and a coaster wagon for kids to take a ride around the festival grounds. If people get the munchies in between meals, Rose City French Fries will be on the grounds all weekend, along with 4-H ice cream to cool down on a hot day.

Comedy, drama abounds in 2012
F
or more than 50 years, Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) has presented exceptional and entertaining theater in the Alexandria lakes area. TLHD partners with national and regional theaters to present five comedies and musicals throughout the summer. LEGACY- A Tribute to the King of Pop features Michael Jackson impersonator Luis Castillo and the cast of LEGACY, who keep audiences on the edge of their seats, or on their feet, as they are taken through a journey of Michael Jackson’s classic songs such as Beat It, Thriller, Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, Black or White, Bad, and more! The 39 Steps features more than 150 characters brought to life by a cast of just four actors who reenact the entire 1935 Hitchcock movie on stage. It’s a wildly entertaining experience for ages 9 to 90 complete with train chases, plane crashes, shadowy murders, beautiful spies, dastardly
villains, and some good old-fashioned romance! Doubt, as the title implies, centers around unproven allegations made by an inflexible and controlling nun. The play is a fascinating story of suspicion and moral uncertainty with many unexpected twists and turns. Linda Kelsey, who played Billie on the longrunning Lou Grant Show, will portray Sister Aloysius at Theatre L’Homme Dieu. Get ready Alexandria – Gilligan's Island: The Musical is docking at a desert island near you. The hilarity found in America's cherished sitcom is in full effect in this larger-than-life musical! Bringing back all those wellknown and beloved characters, this fun-filled musical comedy is sure to please audiences of all ages. You’ll be singing in the aisles as you set off on a nostalgic less-than-three-hour musical tour you’ll never forget! Season ticket packages are now available for the 2012 season and can be purchased online at www.tlhd.org. The box office opens one hour before showtime.

Birthplace of America Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong. KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster? A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria. Explore the controversy for yourself at the Runestone Museum, located at 206 Broadway in Alexandria. For more information call (320) 763-3160, or visit the museum’s website at www.runestonemuseum.org.
BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICA
P
erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway. Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area. The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue. Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair.
BIG OLE The 28-foot tall Viking statue is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Park, across the street from the Runestone Museum at 206 Broadway. KENSINGTON RUNESTONE The world-famous Runestone is located at the Runestone Museum, 206 Broadway in Alexandria. RUNESTONE MUSEUM 206 Broadway, Alexandria. Summer hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area. FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.

long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes. The tournament will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual Pro-Am on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest and the ever-quirky derby, sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player. Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is the place that the PGA Tour Professional and USA Ryder Cup Captain learned the game of golf. More than 300 golfers will take part in the tournament again this year.

Did you know? THE ALEXANDRIA GOLF CLUB is the oldest golf course in Alexandria, dating back to 1915. THE SCENIC COURSE is an 18-hole facility that plays 6,504 yards from the back tees and has a course rating of 71.9 and slope of 132. ADMISSION is free for spectators TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Action for the 91st annual Resorters Golf Tournament will begin on Sunday, July 29, with an 8 a.m. practice round, followed by the 2 p.m. Pro-Am tournament On Monday, play begins early with the qualifying rounds for the Men’s Executive Division starting at 7 a.m. Qualifying for the Men’s Regular Division will start at 7 a.m. Tuesday, followed by Junior 10-12 Division qualifying and Junior 13-15 Division match play. Starting on Wednesday, all divisions will be competing in match play, which will continue through Saturday’s championship matches. The finals are slated to begin at noon with the Junior Division, followed by the Men’s Senior and Men’s Masters, Women’s Regular and Men’s Regular Divisions.
The Alexandria Golf Club and the Resorters Golf Tournament are nothing short of spectacular. Of the three largest golf competitions in out-state Minnesota – the Pine-to-Palm in Detroit Lakes and the Birchmont in Bemidji – the Resorters is the longest-running tournament. The most famous hole on the course – the 7th hole – has an elevated tee that plays 172 yards from the back tees. The shot to the green, shaped like the state of Minnesota, is over a creek, protecting the putting surface. So be sure not to miss this signature event in the lakes area. If you’re a golf enthusiast, it offers some of the best free entertainment around.

The Central Lakes Trail has something for everyone
T
he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County. The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County. The trail head and parking area in Alexandria is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield,
Brandon and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson. The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter, however studs are not allowed.
Share the Trail
BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level. RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state-controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users. SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll be passing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “On yer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe. PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so. USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution. BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others. USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards. DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but don’t take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails. CLEAN UP LITTER Don’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone. From HaveFunBiking.com

Fishing contest makes big changes! The annual area fishing contest has undergone some big changes for the 2012 season. Those who love fishing said they wanted to see more photos – and we listened! We’ve added an entirely new publication called Just Fish, which will be just that – fish, fish and more fish. Published twice a month, Just Fish will feature photos and information on the biggest catches from area lakes. You can find Just Fish on stands around the area. Monthly big fish will also be featured here in the Vacationer. Here’s what you’ll need to know about this year’s fishing contest: The contest will run from the opening of the walleye and northern season in May and will end after Labor Day weekend. It has been expanded to include lakes in both Douglas and Pope counties. At the end of the summer, the largest fish in six different categories in both the Junior and Senior Divisions will receive a Just Fish fishing contest T-shirt and season winner certificate. There are two divisions: a junior division for those ages 16 and younger, and a senior division for those ages 17 and older. Each division has six categories – walleye, northern, crappie, sunfish, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers can enter their fish at Christopherson’s Bait in Alexandria or Koep’s Bait and Tackle in Glenwood. Entry forms are available in both places and must be filled out completely and clearly or it will not qualify. Fishermen can also e-mail us photos at sports@echopress.com. Anglers must include their name, address, phone number, division being entered, date the fish was caught, species of fish, weight of fish, type of bait used, depth of water and name of the lake where the fish was caught. Fish entered in the contest must come from lakes inside or immediately bordering Douglas and Pope counties.
