You’ll even get a chance to vote for the best ribs around! Head out to one of our many golf courses, and of course, who can forget our multitude of lakes? Cool, clear water. Perfect for boating, skiing, sailing, fishing, pontooning and swimming. What could be more perfect in the summer? Grab a camera and take in the annual Tour of Gardens, where the flowers and plant life will take your breath away. Unknowingly, it arrives on her doorstep one day in the form of a scruff y pizza delivery guy who flunked high school English. Will she open her eyes to see the true poet, the one who is capti-
vated by the ordinary, the one whose love for her is comparable only to his passion for organic lawn fertilizer? To make reservations, buy tickets or for more information, call (320) 8463150 or purchase tickets online at www.tlhd.org. The theater is located at 1875 County Road 120 NE in Alexandria. Here for life. Dear neighbors,
We will never stop pushing to be the best, on your behalf.
On any given day, as I walk through our facilities, I am very touched by the fact that many of people’s most significant life moments happen here. Lives begin, thrive, are healed and, sadly, at times, are lost here. We do our best to care for you and your loved ones in each of these moments with compassion and expertise. This is a beautiful honor and a sacred responsibility. It’s something all of us here take very seriously. Here for generations. So much of who we are and where we are headed is shaped by where we have been. For the past 118 years, our neighbors have trusted us to care for their children, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
Here for you. I am very excited about what we have planned in the coming years. We are focused on caring for you in better and better ways. We have made a concerted effort over the past five years to add over 30 new providers. We have expanded our express care to seven days a week. And we will continue to expand our access, providers and quality to serve more people in more ways.
Thank you for trusting us with your lives and those of your loved ones. Here’s to a healthy 2018! Sincerely,
Carl Vaagenes Alomere Health CEO
I speak for all of our staff and physicians when I say that our daily passion and purpose is to strengthen and nurture the health and well-being of our family, friends, neighbors and communities, through every season of life.
And we absolutely plan to be here for generations to come. Here for health. Most of what makes a person healthy happens outside the walls of our hospital or clinics—which is why we are passionate about supporting every aspect of health for the people who live in our area. Here for excellence. It has been an honor and privilege to serve and grow with you as your hometown hospital and clinics, offering state-of-the-art facilities, physicians, staff, and standards of excellence. We are committed to continuing to provide award-winning care as the destination hospital and clinics within central Minnesota.

ain or shine, Alexandria’s celebration of summer – Awake the Lakes/Ribfest – will be heating up on Saturday, June 23 at Big Ole Park on Broadway. It promises to rev up the summer season during a warmer time of the year and build off the big crowds that are coming into town for the Vikingland Band Festival. Admission to the event is free. The oneday event features
something for everyone. The popular Ribfest will be back, along with a live band, beer garden, fireworks, kid-friendly activities and more. A local non-profit organization, aptly named Awake the Lakes, has taken over the event from the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. As in the past, events will take place on Second Avenue by Big Ole Central Park. Ribfest will take place, rain or shine, under a large tent. A big trophy and bragging rights will go to the champions. The public, of course, will have the chance to feast on the ribs. If ribs aren’t your thing, there will be other food vendors, serving a variety of tasty choices.
AWAKE THE LAKES/RIBFEST This year’s event will include great food, live music, a beer garden and fireworks. THREE DIVISIONS OF CHEFS There will be three divisions in the Ribfest rib cooking contest: Professional, Amateur and Newbie. WHERE TO FIND IT Big Ole Park is across the street from the Runestone Museum at 206 Broadway.

Choreographed fireworks are computer synchronized to music and broadcast on the radio. n a e l O g i B e n o t s e n u R Birthplace of America P erhaps one of the most eye-catching “landmarks” in Alexandria is Big Ole – a 28-foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway. Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area. The idea for the statue began in January 1964 when North Star World’s Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York World’s Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled “Minnesota, Birthplace of America.” The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue. Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of 1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the World’s Fair. Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December 1965. Now, more than 50 years later, he still stands strong.
KENSINGTON RUNESTONE It’s a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster? A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of Sixth Avenue in Alexandria. Explore the controversy for yourself at the Runestone Museum, located at 206 Broadway in Alexandria. RUNESTONE MUSEUM The Runestone Museum has been inspiring curiosity about local history and heritage for more than 50 years. The world famous and controversial Kensington Runestone was the Runestone Museum’s only artifact when it opened its doors in 1958. Since then, the museum has expanded to include exhibits celebrating native Minnesotans, emigrants and immigrants, Minnesota wildlife and events that shaped the area. Fort Alexandria, commissioned in 1862, has been recreated with rescued
historical structures built between 1860 and 1910 and is located in the outdoor portion of the campus that is open April-October. Housing rare and exciting artifacts like a Middle Age. Nordic fire steel and a 1920s jingle dress, the Runestone Museum is sure to impress whether you’re interested in history, heritage or the natural sciences. For more information call (320) 763-3160, or visit the museum’s website at www.runestonemuseum.org. Check out the museum’s Facebook page at Runestone Museum Foundation.

BIG OLE The 28-foot tall Viking statue is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Park, across the street from the Runestone Museum at 206 Broadway. RUNESTONE MUSEUM After you take your picture with Big Ole, cross the street for a visit to the Runestone Museum. There you will learn about Big Ole, Vikings and Nordic explorers, and test your skill at matching animal prints in the wildlife exhibit. Along with the Runestone, the museum holds exhibits on Native Americans, early immigrant history, the history of Alexandria, a memorial/gun exhibit, a Minnesota wildlife exhibit, and a hands-on children’s area. 206 Broadway, Alexandria. Summer hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.

Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is a look back in time
M
uch of Minnesota’s history is inspired by the many beautiful lakes throughout our state, and the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Gardens is dedicated to bringing that history to the public. Open from May 22 through October, the museum features handcrafted wooden boats, grand hotels and fishing clubs, bringing to life traditions that reach back nearly a century and a half. These diverse exhibits, as well as the Gardens, are all part of the Legacy of the Lakes Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of antique and classic watercraft, resort memorabilia and
sporting equipment used on the Minnesota lakes. A new exhibit for 2018 is the kinetic sculptures of John Buck, an American artist working primarily with wood, opening mid June. Six of his sculptures will be on display at the museum this summer. The pieces depict moments of shared history, past and present. The museum is located in downtown Alexandria at 205 Third Avenue West, near the Alexandria Fire Department. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 65 and older, $5 for students ages 5-17 and $18 for families (parent and children younger than 17). Children 5 and younger are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Contact the museum at (320) 759-1114 or through its website www.legacyofthelakes.org.
