Light up downtown Alexandria

LIGHT UPdowntown alexandria

The festive lighting of downtown Alexandria Christmas lights provides a moment of awe each year.

It is always held the day after Thanksgiving, and this year is no exception. At 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, Santa and Mrs. Claus will ride down Broadway and the downtown decorations will light up, officially ushering in the start of the Christmas season.

The public is invited to line up along Broadway between Third Street and Eighth Street, said Amanda Seim, executive director of the Runestone Museum, which is organizing the event.

The event includes two other activities. Children are invited to mail a letter to Santa by dropping it in a special mailbox at the museum. Also, the Parade of Trees will go virtual, and people can vote for their favorite decorated tree.

Clubs, organizations and businesses are asked to decorate a holiday tree with a theme of their choosing and submit a photo by Thursday, Dec. 3, to museum@legacyofthelakes.org.

The public will be able to vote for their favorite tree from Friday, Dec. 4-Monday, Dec. 21 at www.legacyofthelakes.org/ parade-of-trees. They can also submit a free will donation benefiting Douglas County Hospice.

The Parade of Trees winner will be announced on Christmas Day.
