WELCOME! Yesterday I ducked into the local disposal store and bought myself a very comfortable new pair of Wellingtons. After years of going to the Bluesfest I know that I don’t want wet feet to detract from my enjoyment of what is each year a ‘remarkable’ lineup. It’s the kind of festival where the weather doesn’t matter. The event in itself is an experience of total musical immersion. This year the program features many acts who have long histories, many with beyond 40 plus years of playing together. These are musical stories that have evolved and been shaped by time; some of the musicians have even shaped popular culture, like Donovan, or the politically outspoken Crosby Stills and Nash. This year Bluesfest pays homage to one of Australia’s longstanding superbands: Cold Chisel, the first Australian act to ever headline a Bluesfest bill. This will be the third time I’ve seen Buddy Guy, but he’s one of those artists that I keep wanting to return to, knowing that my life maturity is going to add even more dimension to how I enjoy his playing. Bluesfest boasts a solid five-day program that provides only one main challenge… is it best to sit in one tent all day or weave between? I’m always perplexed as how to manage a program where I want to catch everyone! The best advice to anyone attending Bluesfest is to get out your biro and mark up your program, and in the process make sure you do a little research to try to find out about acts you may not have heard of. And then take a few risks, and let yourself discover your next favourite new act. They’re everywhere. Make sure to take the time to catch our local musos who get a run at Bluesfest, with acts like The Blackbirds, Mick McHugh and The Round Mountain Girls, winners of three Golden Fiddle Awards at Tamworth this year. While the sun may shine all weekend, I’d say, cover thy feet and open thy heart to a five-day musically transformative experience!

Forty years plus and going strong, Crosby Stills and Nash, the world’s first supergroup, takes the stage at Bluesfest. The music of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash – CS&N – is a cornerstone of rock ’n’ roll. Individually these men had exceptional careers prior to CS&N. David Crosby played with folk-rock group, The Byrds, Stephen Stills with Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash sang with the outspoken political group, The Hollies. As CS&N this Grammy Award-winning trio of legendary singer-songwriters have been actively collaborating since 1969; each one inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice! Their first two albums listed in Rolling Stone ’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. CS&N survived the turbulent times in which they existed as well as the often volatile climate of their own inner workings and personal lives to continue to make music that connected with fans around the world. In addition to making music together, Crosby, Stills and Nash have always pursued parallel solo careers; a complete list of the collaborations that would produce its own massive discography and touring history. Throughout their incredible solo careers, these three lifelong friends keep coming back to stake their claim as one of the greatest bands – ever From Woodstock to Bluesfest – it’s a legacy of the might of music and people power! Every major guitar player without exception gives a nod to Buddy Guy who for 50 years has blazed his trail of energetic blues and blues rock, releasing over 60 albums, mingling the deepest of blues with a creative, unpredictable and radical gumbo of the blues, rock, soul and free jazz that morphs at every performance. And there have been many performances. As one of five children raised on a plantation near the small town of Lettsworth, located some 140 miles northwest of New Orleans, he used

BUSBY MAROU
‘Glorious and genuinely original – amalgams of the very best that folkinspired pop can offer. The end result is compelling and beautiful.’ – Sydney Morning Herald Bluesfest this year features Rockhampton duo Busby Marou. Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou’s unique blend of folk-soaked pop is a shining example of the talent emerging in Australia. The duo were approached by John O’Donnell – former EMI general manager and co-producer of He Will Have His Way album tribute to the Finn Brothers as the only unsigned act included. John O’Donnell mentioned afterwards: ‘Busby Marou were one of the real discoveries for us. Their cover of Crowded House’s Better Be Home Soon was a thing of beauty’. Subsequently the duo signed with Warner Music Australia’s indie imprint Footstomp Records, releasing their first self-titled album that went gold within a month and debuted at #24 on the Aria Album Chart. The duo also took out the 2009 Deadly Award for Most Promising New Talent in Music as well as a swag of nominations and awards since. Make sure to catch Tom Busby’s cheeky onstage presence and Jeremy Marou’s breathtaking musicianship this Easter. Mojo on Sunday.

attention and secured their niche in the pages of rock ’n’ roll history with their BUDDY GUY performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Crossroads Friday 7.15pm Festival (along with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who) and the headlining slot at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. Despite losing these two founder members – and then later, that of longtime guitarist Henry Vestine in 1997 – Canned Heat has survived under the leadership of Fito de la Parra since the late 70s. Since 1967, the band has toured extensively all over the world, performing at numerous festivals including Monterey Pop, Newport Pop, the Sturgis Motorcycle Run USA, and the original Woodstock. They have performed at world-renowned venues such as the Paris Olympia, both Fillmore Auditoriums, The Kaleidoscope, Carnegie Hall (with John Lee Hooker), Madison Square Garden and even Royal Albert Hall, and have played more biker festivals and charity events than any other band in the world. Now into their sixth decade of their seemingly endless WORLD BOOGIE TOUR, the HEAT have turned it up again and are bringing their unique blend of roadhouse electric blues, rock and boogie back to the Bluesfest stage. COLD CHISEL
This year for the first time ever an Australian act headlines the iconic Bluesfest. Cold Chisel are without a doubt one of the most loved and lauded Aussie bands. With plans to continue performing and recording, the band was gutted in January 2011 when drummer Steve Prestwich passed away suddenly as a result of complications from a brain tumour. With Steve’s performances and some of his songs captured on tape, the band ultimately felt compelled to continue with the plans they had begun.
Recording continued through May and June with drummer Charley Drayton. In July 2011, the band rolled out the biggest archival release in Australian music history, remastering all of their extensive catalogue and unearthing 56 new or rare live and studio recordings. It was the first time ever that the band had released their music digitally and it saw eight of their albums hit the ARIA Top 100 Albums

ANGELIQUE KIDJO
Angelique Kidjo is one of the greatest forces in African music, a creative energy with eleven international albums to her name. Her most recent release, 2010’s Oyo featuring John Legend, Bono and Dianne Reeves, is a measure of her maturity. The album is deeply introspective, reflecting on the events that have brought Kidjo to this point. Not only is she an amazing songstress and storyteller, she has an amazing story herself. Having grown up in the west African state of Benin and being forced into exile aboard to avoid imprisonment, this Grammy-awardwinning inspiration still bears witness to her African roots. Her fierce advocacy of humanitarianism and women’s rights prompted Time magazine to call her ‘Africa’s premier diva’ and The Guardian to

ASHLEIGH MANNIX Jambalaya Saturday 1.30pm
Time magazine have called her ‘America’s finest songwriter’. Lucinda Williams is back at Bluesfest with a swag of new songs off her latest work Blessed and we can’t wait. Writing since the age of six, playing guitar since she was 12, she has been performing for the last 37 years. It’s fair to say she has perfected the art of creating intriguing, gritty lyrics to match her distinctive, haunting voice during this time. Blessed is no exception. This alt-country songstress had Elvis Costello among the guest musicians featured on her latest album, playing some scorching electric guitar that only further offset the strength of her spine-tingling voice. Crossroads on Thursday & Saturday.

MACEO PARKER
His name is synonymous with funky music, his pedigree impeccable; his band – the tightest little funk orchestra on Earth. Everyone knows by now that he’s played with each and every leader of funk: his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as ‘like being at university’; jumping aboard the mothership with George Clinton and those varied and colourful incarnations of Parliament and Funkadelic; stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of funk in one golden thread; the cipher that unravels dance music down to its core. Crossroads on Sunday & Monday.
