Jeremy Betterley in front of our Solar Power Inverters

Greetings from the Director If you have ever consciously set out to learn something new in your life, just remember how stimulating and rewarding it was, especially when you achieved your goal and found the joy of learning along the way. In these pages, we hope you will find an opportunity (or two) to rekindle your fire and move into a new experience. Our modest community organisation often attracts comments from people in other towns all over the country who ask how do we manage to offer such a range of courses. That’s because the Byron region is such a keen and active learning community and many locals have such a range of interests, being prepared to explore and invest in their future. Sustainability is about economic, social and environmental issues and this College is proud of its achievements in modelling best practice. We have won a national award in recognition of this. Recently we hosted a study abroad research student from the USA, Jeremy Betterley to conduct an energy, water and waste audit and form recommendations for continuous improvement. In one finding he worked out that with the 30kw rooftop photovoltaic system, we are exporting an average of 5.7 Mwh of renewable energy per annum back to the grid in excess of what we are using for our operations! Aside from running successful courses, Byron Region Community College also works on nationally funded projects. One such project, which will be launched in the coming month is a book written by our very own Katrina Shields and Lisa Hoggard called “The Educating for Sustainability Toolkit of Learning Activities and Resources”. This is a comprehensive, easy to use resource for teachers in High Schools, TAFEs and Universities across Australia. It is funded by the Commonwealth under “Skills for the Carbon Challenge”, and will be available in hard copy and e-book. So check our website soon if you want to purchase a copy. Happy learning Richard Vinycomb

Student and I first had the good fortune to move to this region from a village in England when I was just ten years old. Growing up in the Shire, new tutor profile: I learned to swim, juggle and dance like never before! I’d had a PC Benjamine Pierssene at home from the age of five; in my first year of primary school, my teachers told my mother that there was nothing more they could teach me about the classroom’s computer. Studying for the HSC at Mullum High, I was using a second-hand laptop. It was tediously slow so I decided to web-search for an alternative to Windows, the operating system. The colourful range I discovered, such as Ubuntu, “Linux for Human Beings” had me very excited. When I finished Year 12, I lived and taught in Malaysia for about two years, all the while using only the Linux operating system at work. I left because I knew I’d have more to offer as my own boss. While visiting friends and relatives in England I began to form ideas around my passion for information freedom. Earlier this year I decided to do the Cert IV in Small Business Management with Byron Community College. This course has helped me to shape my ideas into a realistic and sustainable business plan. My tutors have a unique relationship with the local business environment and, as students, we’re encouraged to work together to a common goal within the community. I will be offering my course – ‘Introduction to Free Sorfware’ for the first time with Byron Community College this year. UKULELE FOR BEGINNERS with Kenneth Gates

I didn’t plan to have a radio show. I’m a hypnotherapist. I always liked radio. When I saw that Byron Community College was offering a course called ‘Basic Radio Skills’, I thought “Why not? It’ll be something different.” The course was practical, with enough theory to support the technical side of broadcasting, and the students were diverse and interesting. I didn’t know about the live broadcast! But it was fun and frightening and it pushed me out of my comfort zone. And the radio show? I hadn’t planned that, but now I can give back to my community – the show is mindwaves on BAY FM, Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. www.mindwaves.net.au

For the past month, Jeremy Betterley, a 21 yr old student from Massachusetts, has been inspecting our rubbish, water usage and energy consumption. Jeremy’s interest in garbage can be attributed to his participation in an independent study project, which he is undertaking as part of his Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Ithaca, NY. Jeremy and 20 fellow students have come to Australia to complete an assignment in “Sustainability and Environmental Action,” with the School of International Training. Mullumbimby was fortunate enough to land 3 of these bright sparks. A brief summary of his findings was presented to staff and management during a meeting. The initial impression of the report is that Byron Community College is performing well in all three areas, with some potential “tweaking” to become even more sustainable. We look forward to digesting his report more thoroughly and adopting many if not all of his suggestions. Even though he was only around for a month, his smiling face will be missed by all of us in the office who had the pleasure of his company. Good luck to Jeremy and all the other international students.

Student Profile: Danielle Rowland

I am a born and bred Byron Shire teenager who was eager to continue educating myself. However, I was not only reluctant to leave our beautiful environment for further education, it was financially an impossibility. Fortunately, Byron Community College provided a most rewarding option. I have always loved children and believed they deserve nurturing to develop into all that they can be. Studying the Certificate III in Children Services has given me the skills and knowledge to implement this belief. I feel very privileged to have shared the company of fellow friendly students and be guided by a caring, and highly educated teacher. I would fully recommend this course to everyone intending to work in child care or for anyone becoming a parent. Danielle Rowland Certificate III Children’s Services 2013
