Byron Community College Term 4 2014

SUSTAINABLE SCULPTURE PROJECT 2014 – A COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT The recent work by a group of creative individuals has seen the courtyard of the Mullumbimby Campus of the College undergo a transformation. Guided by well-known local ceramic artist and sculptor Suvira McDonald, and funded by the site management Community Learning Innovation Centre group, the aim was to collectively design a cohesive sculptural installation for the courtyard. In keeping with the sustainability policies of the College, the materials for the project were largely salvaged from local farms, junk shops and other repositories. Suvira completed the initial stage of the work, creating 3 large totems made from weathered hardwood posts from old cattle yards which were adorned with an assortment of historical steel pieces. The totems suggest a story of the native state of the land and what followed after European settlement. Chains form a boundary between two posts, whilst instruments of agriculture represent the more recent mechanisations brought in as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Suvira used an established vocabulary of marks and techniques within the

weathered grooves of the posts to convey the narrative. “The totems are testimonial markers of place” – says Suvira. Stage 2 of the project saw a unanimous decision by the group to open up the space. Raised garden beds were relocated, and the totems were given a home, immediately transforming the energy of the courtyard. A creative wall was installed in the undercover area which successfully screens off the air conditioning units and water tanks. Its story could be unique to the viewer, and is well worth a visit. The courtyard makeover is part of an ongoing process aimed at creating a vibrant communal space at the College. Term 4 will see a cob oven workshop taking place under the guidance of Anneke De Graff who was involved in building the oven at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens (see pg 31 for more information). This will be installed in the undercover area, along with a wet/dry area for the Visual Arts students to utilise. Suvira also has plans for a continuing gallery of sustainable artwork installations in and around the College so….. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Student Profile: Merryn Boller Small Business Management 1. When did you realise you needed to do the Small Business Management qualification with the College?

nationally recognised training

It was less of a realisation and more of a challenge that I wanted to give myself. I knew it would be very helpful with managerial skills that would allow me to create a professional image for Potato Potato. Potato Potato is the band in which I am actively a part of. We’re a pop folk band consisting of four members... all dwellers of the Shire. Although Potato Potato is not your generic shopfront business, it is a business in its own right... just one that operates all over the place. We have performed at Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Blues Fest, Woodford and Mullum Music Festival as well as many support acts and acoustic sets at cafes such as the wonderful Treehouse on Belongil. I knew the Small Business Management Course at the BCC would give me the right tools and direction towards running The Taters as a successful and well respected music business.

8

2. How did doing the course change the way you now approach your music career? Since completing the course I am now aware of all the nitty gritty things that are involved with running a business... things most people don’t realise until they are right in the thick of it!

3. What were the WOW factors of the course? I loved the group participation and the judgement-free and loving environment that was created whilst we were there.

4. What would be your advice to other people considering doing the Small Business qualification? Be ready for a challenge and lots of out of class work... I only completed my HSC last year so I got quite the shock when I had to complete assessments every other week. But it is all a part of it and now I feel like I have quite a grasp of what is involved to create a small business. You will have the support of your tutors as well as the college too... if any problems arose, they were dealt with, with care and recognition of our day to day dilemmas.

Mentor Profile: Peter Spill Cert IV Small Business Management

Having owned and operated small businesses in textiles, food, tourism, agribusiness, management rights and small business consultancy over a forty year period, Peter found retirement somewhat unfulfilling. He also spent several years working for NSW State and Federal Governments in the small business sector and was Executive Officer of the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC). In 2011 Peter enrolled in the Certificate IV in Small Business Management course with the aim of improving his e-commerce skills. Instead he found himself helping students to refine and develop their business goals. The motivation to become a Mentor was born in this classroom and provided the rewarding opportunity to give something back for all the success enjoyed in business life. The role of Mentor is much more than just an adviser or shoulder to lean on. It often develops into a genuine outlet for the student to discuss a range of issues and for the mentor to share real life experiences. This link between the classroom and tutors provides “one on one” assistance with business ideas and the steps required to implement positive action plans. A Mentor has to be a good listener and have the ability to empathise with the student. The process is often about suggesting ways to look at problems/ opportunities from a different perspective, to help the student appreciate the wisdom accumulated over many years of real life failures and successes.

NATIONALLY RECOGNISED TRAINING

The biggest advantage for the student is having the opportunity to talk to someone who has been there and done that. For the Mentor the best reward is seeing the student grow in confidence to achieve their goals. But of course the most rewarding aspect is to the Mentor who receives the respect and friendship of the students, and the knowledge that business skills and expertise learnt over a lifetime are being passed on to the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Tutor Profile: Virginia Reid Visual Arts Cert III Tutor

I was lucky to have a couple of wonderful teachers when I was in high school who opened up many cultures of the world to me through the study of visual art. Those teacher’s influence had a huge impact on the direction of my life, encouraging me toward art school in Sydney and onto post graduate studies in Canberra and later a Master’s degree in Melbourne. Over the years I have worked and studied in Aboriginal communities in the NT and WA, lived and exhibited in LA and NYC and taught art in various settings ranging from the children’s education program with QAG to maximum security men’s prisons. My focus in the Cert III Visual Arts course is in facilitating a supportive environment for people to explore their creative impulse and deepen connection to their own experience. The Certificate III in Visual Arts builds skills across Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture and Digital units and provides opportunity to work with a number of wonderful local professional artists, including Suvira Macdonald, Michelle Dawson, Dale Rhodes and Rene Bolton. Byron Community College Term 4 2014

I took part in the Website & Blogs course using WordPress at the Byron Community College in May 2014 in order to promote my newly published book Seraphympire. I’d been procrastinating about building my Author’s website for the better part of a year. It was an overwhelming prospect, even using website building templates seemed daunting. So I decided I needed to learn how and enrolled in the website building course BCC was running.

Student Profile: Renee Spyrou Website and Blogs Using Wordpress

I discovered I’d been procrastinating for nothing. Christine Dawson made what I found so very difficult; very, very simple. She has a fun, and enthusiastic way of teaching this course. Her knowledge, expertise and teaching skills were exemplary. Her class was enjoyable and very informative, so much so that I found myself wishing the course went longer than just five weeks. The class atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming and rewarding. I highly recommend people taking this course.

Master the basics of WordPress in this hands-on course. Christine will guide you through creating, managing and using a WordPress website or blog, giving you the skills needed to see your ideas come to life. Computer skills required. Andi is a highly skilled teacher who inspired the class with her passion and enthusiasm for the entire coffee process. With her vast knowledge of coffee as a roaster for the farm, she walked us around the gorgeous grounds of the Zentveld’s coffee plantation and explained the growing, harvesting and roasting process. She then walked us through and had us practice the basics of grinding the beans to perfection, pouring the perfect shot of espresso, and getting the milk to the perfect temperature while producing silky smooth foam. I had such a fun day and highly recommend the course to anyone interested in improving their coffee skills and knowledge!

The only course where you pay to have people laugh at you! If you want to have heaps of fun, make some terrific new friends, and develop a new outlook on life, then the Stand Up Comedy course is for you. I loved every moment as our mistress of comedy, Mandy Nolan, guided 17 of us through the techniques of humour. She was encouraging, inspiring and hilarious. Her vibrant personality drew out even the shyest members of our class.

Student Profile: Helen Chryssides Stand Up Comedy

Mandy showed us how to find the humour in everyday life and write a comedy routine to impress any audience. I wasn’t seeking a new career, just a fun challenge, but found performing an exhilarating experience and have now made a fool of myself in public three times. I found unexpected spin offs from the course; increased confidence, improved public speaking, and a boost in happiness levels. Thank you, Mandy. So, if you want to find your funny bone, this is the place to be. And you don’t even have to give up your day job. Open mike sessions take place at night.

A well-known local of the Northern Rivers, he began his career and passion for the game at Mullumbimby Golf Club for 10 years, moving from junior amateur to PGA Trainee. He then went on to work for Rhys Wright at the Byron Bay Golf Club for 4 years; an experience he regards as a great time for him and his knowledge of the industry. Chris now manages the Ocean Shores Country Club Pro Shop and operates as a PGA Head Professional. His passion for the game of golf and coaching members and social players, as well as running an increasingly popular Saturday junior clinic has seen him grow into a respected local golf coach in our community.

Tutor Profile: Chris Graham Golf For Beginners

Coaching philosophy: Like all sports, golf can be played and enjoyed at many levels. Like other sports, it’s very important to set goals and be clear about expectations in order to create a road map for improved performance. We all need a plan and we all need a way of judging our progress. Playing golf can be immensely satisfying if we set out objectives and work towards them. My teaching philosophy is based on developing a plan with each student and then working through the steps needed to reach each goal. Patience, clarity, fun and focus drive my personal teaching principles. I respect each student’s individuality and tailor my lessons with them to ensure they can reach their maximum potential in an enjoyable and realistic time frame. Golf should be played to be enjoyed as well as to be challenging and creating skills to achieve both is my fundamental wish for my students.
