WELCOME TO THE HOTEL CARAVÃNA.

IT CAN TAKE BEING AWAY FROM HOME, LONG HOURS SPENT IN TRANSIT, A LACK OF SLEEP, AND LANGUAGE BARRIERS TO MAKE YOU REALISE HOW GOOD OUR LIVES ARE IN AUSTRALIA Riding the highs and lows of touring, Caravãna Sun, you could say, had a big 2014. They were just back from gruelling European tours, had a band member retire and replaced by the almighty Ken Allars, and the band are taking it all in their stride, finishing the year with a gig at the Hotel Brunswick. Ant Beard is still catching his breath from the whirlwind that was 2014. ‘It’s been a pretty amazing year – it was our third trip to Europe. It was full on but really nice. Although it’s great to be back here; we have such an appreciation and gratefulness for our country and how lucky we are. ‘We had a few amazing experiences,’ said Ant. ‘In Vienna we were supported by a band from Austria with eight horns playing this authentic polka-styled music. When you get that really authentic music it’s incredible.’ Caravãna Sun could be from anywhere – their music traverses Spain, Greece, Mexico – anywhere the people really know how to party! ‘The reaction was awesome. Each country has its own culture of live music, from the Netherlands at outdoor festivals where they go crazy or in Austria where they are more reserved; the appreciation you get from people is awesome. The highlight was probably our last gig in Portugal at this tiny fishing village; we didn’t start till 4.30 in the morning! Even now online I think 80–90 per cent of the interest is coming from Portugal. It’s amazing to be here and have this huge market of people enjoying our music!’ Ant credits the magic of Caravãna Sun with the very natural way it all came together. ‘It all happened pretty organically and the actual band has been together for four years. It’s hard to underpin the chemistry. I could try and describe it in words but it’s hard. I think what comes through is that we have this respect for each other and the music. The four of us are walking in and dealing with other people’s energy so you have to stick together and look out for each other. I think you can see the respect and the love is a passed-around thing.’ The band are currently working on their third album.

A VERY FUNNY NEW YEARS EVE – FINDING OUT ABOUT

JOEL OZBORN! One of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen is… Akmal getting punched in the head by a woman in Rockhampton. Every new year I… make a New Year resolution I’ll never see through. What I wanted to stop doing last year was… making New Year resolutions. Apparently my most annoying habit is… not getting questionnaires done on time. I love it when… I complete questionnaires. My mother always says… why put off today what you could have done two weeks ago!

The night of decadence offers two dining options. Tickets $175 including buffet dinner or $240 including degustation dinner. Price includes complimentary drink upon arrival, dinner and Lisa Hunt’s Forever Soul show. A Blanches Bus service is operating during the evening, dropping off and picking up outside The Byron at Byron Resort. From 7pm Wednesday 31 December. Dress to impress. For bookings and enquiries 6639 2105 or reservations@ thebyronatbyron.com.au.

I am most comfortable when… I dance. I would describe myself as… a human being. My wife/partner would describe me as… her boyfriend. My perfect day is… yet to happen. My best gig involves… people laughing. My worst gig involves… people not laughing. I have nightmares about… not being able to get to sleep. If I could choose the soundtrack for my own funeral the playlist would feature… Warren Zevon’s Keep Me In Your Heart My greatest regret is… not doing something. The world would be a better place if… we all just got along. Tony Abbott is… the prime minister of Australia. I am most passionate about… indifference. If I could be a world leader for a day I’d… pull a sickie. When I’m old I am going to… get discounted public transport!

The band are particularly excited about playing Hotel Brunswick this New Years.

My greatest fear is… fear itself.

36 December 23, 2014 The Byron Shire Echo

‘I am very excited to be playing at The Byron at Byron this New Years Eve,’ said Ms Hunt. ‘It’s been more than a decade since I’ve done a hometown New Years gig. We’ve always been snapped up by the high rollers on the Gold Coast very early in the year. The setting is like a dream: under the stars, lush greenery, top-notch cuisine. Oh yeah, it’s going to be a fun but classy affair.’

When I dance… I’m alone.

When I wonder who I am… I’ll fear it’s the early onset of Alzheimer’s.

At the Hotel Brunswick on New Years Eve with Pierce Brothers. Doors open from 6pm and tix are $50.

DUBBED AS ‘THE PARTY’, THE NEW YEARS EVE EVENT AT THE BYRON AT BYRON RESORT FEATURES LISA HUNT AND HER FOREVER SOUL SHOW PERFORMING UNDER THE STARS.

The biggest disappointment for me was… wow, how long you got?

‘We are in the process of getting all the songs together. In a way they are writing themselves. A lot are a bit more Australian themed, taking a look at what it means for us to be Australian after touring for four years, and focused on contacting and being part of these small communities.’

‘I am sure this has been a well said thing among musicians around Australia, but anyone who has the pleasure of gracing the stage at Brunswick would have to agree: the connection with the crowd is amazing. I am trying not to talk it up too much, but this is a New Years that is hard not to talk up! It’s going to be a great gig!’

THE HUNT FOR NEW YEAR

The wisest thing I’ve ever heard is… don’t believe everything you read. Love is… all you need. Next year I am going to… Guatemala! Hear more of Joel Ozborn’s unique comedic world view – catch him at the Ballina RSL for the NYE Comedy Festival with Akmal, Greg Sullivan and Mandy Nolan. With a two-course dinner and music by Lou Bradley. Doors from 6.45pm.$64.90pp or table of ten (10): $62.90pp. Phone 6681 9557.

What is your opinion of the local music scene? It’s great! A really artistic and cultural melting pot. Also being a prime destination for travelling and overseas acts we get to enjoy some fantastic music from around the world, right here on our doorstep. Why do you think Byron is a good location for Falls? Last year was the first time we’d played at Falls Fest, and the first time I’d been to the festival. It had a really nice vibe, not too hectic like some of the big festivals can be. It seemed to suit Byron Shire’s laidback but artistic feeling.

VERNA’S KEEP

What is your opinion of the local music scene? Thriving despite constant pressure to turn artists into entertainers.

TORA

What is your opinion of the local music scene? The music scene here is cranking, so much talent coming in and out of this place. On top of the awesome venues locally, we’re lucky enough to have three of Australia’s major festivals in our shire. Why do you think Byron is a good location for Falls? A summer festival needs a beautiful beach nearby to make it perfect.

What are you most looking forward to about performing at Falls? Looking forward to playing our set of gypsy style music on NYE! Had such a great dancing crowd last year – always heaps of fun to inject some gypsy passion and high energy into the masses!

Who are the artists or musicians who influence you? I think every bit of music we listen to influences our music in some way or other. We’re constantly finding new music, but we spend most of our time looking for ways to sound different. If you were to ask me this a year ago I would have said James Blake.

GOT TO LOVE A WOMAN WITH SOUL What is the vision for Soul Street?

The lack of other local businesses seeing the value in supporting the event has been a real eye opener and pretty disappointing. We are trying to get the message across to them that a happy, drama-free NYE does affect the whole summer tourism vibe in this town and we need to make it enticing to families and the more chilled-out visitors and discourage the more unpleasant ones. If we achieve this, their businesses will benefit. I think these types of events really set the tone for this outcome.

We wanted to create a fun, safe, familyfriendly, alcohol-free event for locals and visitors. Who do you think are going to be the highlights? We have the kooky Dandyman, The Pitts Family Circus plus Spaghetti Circus doing fab circus entertainment, King Tide, Mojo Juju, Kyle Lionhart, a lovely new discovery Annie Plummer, Flash Mob Dancers and an Amazing Flea Circus as well.

MOUCHE PHILLIPS IS THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR SOUL STREET, BYRON’S FREE NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY RUNNING IN THE PARKS AND BEACHFRONT OF BYRON THIS YEAR. MOUCHE TALKS WITH THE ECHO ABOUT WHAT’S IN STORE.

You have acts like Dandyman, King Tide Band and Mojo Juju that would usually attract a big ticket price, but this is free! How many people do you have capacity for where you have set up?

How has the community got behind Soul Street? Members of the community are so grateful there is something they can bring their families to as most have avoided NYE in town for years. So they are pretty excited. But to be really honest, we have had only about 10 local businesses who really saw the value and importance of this type of event happening and they have come out well to financially back it.

SILENT NIGHT

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT IT’S POSSIBLE TO BRING LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE TOGETHER DANCING WITHOUT ANY NOISE? That’s what is planned for Byron’s Soul Street this New Years Eve when Silent Disco Avishay leads music lovers in the world’s most considerate dance party. Can you tell me what happens at a silent disco? Funmaker Silent Disco is a new way of having pure sober fun. I have it all set up in my 1981 HiAce van. A roof that opens up with 400 glowing headphones – three DJ decks inside the van and a lot of soul and passion in our music and funmaking. You get your headphones on and you get into a world of happiness. You can switch in between three different DJs who play three different kinds of music and you dance whereever you want. Literally! It’s silent. Our dancefloors are everywhere: Main Beach, parks, festivals, outdoor or indoor you name it. Beside the silent disco parties, I’m developing Funmaker – The First Social Technology Enterprise. Where we invent new technologies to unite people instead of technologies that separate us from each other.

GOONS OF GREAT NORTHERN The Goons of Doom are joined by Ocean Alley, The Badlands and DJ Chris Bradley at the Hotel Great Northern this New Years. A gig for people who like their music with a little edge. Here are some things you may not know about the GOD: The Goons of Doom are four childhood buddies from Sydney’s northern beaches who met on the very first day of school: Ozzy Wrong, Killerwhale, Vaughan Deadly and The

Crimson Baquero, also known as Cowboy. All four enjoyed lengthy suspensions and ruthless canings for various indiscretions at school. And did you also know – the Goons of Doom have been ripping the fuck out of live shows for 10 long years. They’ve toured the world a dozen times and played at festivals such as Big Day Out, Falls and SXSW and they’ve also toured with, opened for or been on the same bill as a diverse range of acts including The Presets, Wolfmother, Hole, The Beautiful Girls, The Rakes, Pennywise, The Ground Components, Angus & Julia Stone, The Gingers, John Dillinger

It’s really exciting to be able to offer up great entertainment to people free of charge. I especially feel great for parents as we all know how much it costs to take kids out for a night. We had such a big turnout last year I decided to put the stage out in the middle of the street in front of the Community Centre, put the circus tent in Railway Park and Samba-Blisstas at the Clocktower.

How did you start doing it and where did they originate? I came from Israel two years ago with many dreams. One of them was travelling with a van and making music that reflects my experiences along the way. I asked Uri Nicholls, my dear friend/brother, to help me and build a music van. He took a pencil and measureming tape and a few weeks later, after many stages and improvements, we finished. The van was fitted, the headphones were on their way to Byron, the energies were great and we wanted to try it out. So we showed up on Main Beach on a Sunday night – it was my dear friend Tomas Schon’s Birthday. We celebrated his day and tried out the gear. It became an unforgettable night. I stood on the roof looking at a 100 people dancing freely and realised I had something pure with heaps of potential in my hands. What do people get out of participating? They get to meet people. They get to peel off some of the fear they have around social encounters and the fear of dancing. They get to connect with nature. They get to feel SOBER partying. They go back home and think, ‘I did something today. I affected someone’s life and my own. I grew.’ What kind of music will you be playing? We play all genres. Electro swing, Motown, gypsy and balkan, hip-hop, dance and house, trance, 50s–90s, and any requested music out there.

Who else has supported Soul Street?

The volunteers at the Community Centre have been helpful as usual, finding all the bits and pieces needed to make it special, and the two new girls at Council, Marissa and Claire, have been great. It’s wonderful having people now in Council who have event and producing backgrounds. It has made our job at BCC a lot easier. Tess, who runs the markets, is organising the stalls for the event and is such a joy and is my sanity when it comes to programming. She lets me know if my ideas are good or crazy. Paul Spooner, of course, for allowing us the opportunity to take the challenge. What should we expect for NYE 2014? Entertainment from 4pm onwards in a street full of colour, movement, music and performance from Byron artists and some out-of-towers who just love performing here. We want the town to be able to reclaim their streets on NYE, be able to relax, watch the fun and have a gorgeous night in the heart of Byron.

Music for me has no age or timeline. It’s eternal. Some people love nostalgia in their music and some love innovation and new releases. Some love a specific genres that makes them dance and some just like it all. No ages, no religion, no differences. People having fun. Tell me about your NYE Silent Disco in Railway Park? What should people expect? We usually party on Main Beach, Byron Bay. You can connect to our Facebook page (Funmaker) and see when and where our parties take place and also watch some videos and pictures. On Christmas Day, if the weather is good, you can find us on Main Beach as well. NYE is a whole different story. Like last year, when we did it next to the roundabout, this year will be at Railway Park. In the heart of all the wonderful activities that the Community Centre plans, we will be there to make 2015 sweeter happier. Three DJs, three channels, heaps of headsets and the option to dance in a 500m range around the van. Everywhere. We are always looking for people to interact and brainstorm with. So if you want to play music in one of our channels or you have an idea for us and want to join the global fun network, feel free to come and give us a hug. Look out for NYE Silent Disco in Byron at Railway Park this New Years Eve – one of the incredible experiences available free as part of Soul Street.

Escape Plan, Damien Marley & Nas, Mariachi El Bronx, and a whole bunch of other fucks too! Oh, and another thing: The Goons of Doom’s tattoos suck. Cowboy has a tattoo of rain but no clouds. Ozzy Wrong has a tattoo of stitches and dinosaur bones. Vaughan Dead has a tattoo that says ‘I went to the tattoo shop and all I got was this lousy tattoo’. Killerwhale has a tattoo of his dog’s name ‘Fizzy’ on the roof of his mouth. Do something you won’t regret and catch them at the Hotel Great Northern this NYE. $20 plus b/f.
