How is the realty sector coping in lockdown?

Newborn hijacks van

Mandy Nolan

On April 30, at around 7pm, Kayla Tutchen made a surprise entrance in the back of her parent’s car. When Chrys Tutchen’s waters broke, dad Duane and two-and-a-half-year-old big sister, Luna, got into their van to head to Byron Hospital for a water birth. Duane said, ‘I started the van, only to hear Chrys say the baby was coming out. Now! I raced around the van so I could help Chrys in the back with Luna.’ Fearing a stillbirth, Duane was guided by their midwife on the phone, and gave the baby a gentle pull around the head to wiggle out a shoulder on the next contraction. He said, ‘Chrys was standing, and baby came out quite easily. I just kind of caught this tiny slimy little bub and was holding everything in my hands’. Arts sector needs JobKeeper too: Labor The federal government’s JobKeeper program needs to include arts sector workers and freelancers, says local federal Labor MP, Justine Elliot. While sole traders can apply for the Liberal-Nationals government’s job package, many artists and musicians cannot, and have had to apply instead for JobSeeker unemployment benefits. Mrs Elliot told The Echo, ‘Our arts and entertainment industries were the first industries to be shut

down – and are likely to be the last to emerge from this crisis. ‘This is a $111 billion industry facing decimation, and the Morrison government must urgently act to support the incomes of these workers. ‘Locally our artists, musicians and creative industry workers have been severely impacted. It’s important to remember that this isn’t about celebrities. This is about the workers who put on shows, who

live gig-to-gig, who have been left behind by the Morrison government. ‘Despite Labor’s warnings, and the industry’s cries for help, the government knowingly left many of these workers out of the JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme – forcing them onto the Centrelink queue. ‘Many of them have lost 100 per cent of their income, but are ineligible for the JobKeeper wage subsidy, simply because of the gigto-gig nature of their industry’.

With state and federal COVID-19 restrictions hitting the business sector hard, what issues are local realtors facing? One of the largest agents in the area is Byron Bay First National Real Estate. Its principal, Chris Hanley, believes that Byron is in a key position to make an excellent recovery. ‘People have realised they aren’t going anywhere in the next 12 months’, says Mr Hanley, ‘and what that means is they are either going to come here, or go to New Zealand, when they open it up. ‘To me, that means we are going to recover in the spring much better than any other part of the country – we have the best physical assets, and I think our community will bounce back.’ Yet the commercial market has been hardest hit, he says, ‘because businesses have been closed down by government edict’. While sales are down, Mr Hanley says properties are still selling in what he calls a ‘realistic’ market brought about by the pandemic. ‘Anyone buying or selling in the middle of a pandemic is a realist. ‘And that’s not a bad thing – when you are dealing in a transaction, if the buyer is a realist, and the seller is a realist, you will find common ground.’ Meanwhile, Peter Browning from LJ Hooker in Brunswick Heads shares a similar story. ‘While the volume is definitely down, all buyer enquires have been solid’. He says, ‘I am no longer dealing with 27 enquiries, with only two in the position to proceed. We are now

only dealing with genuine buyers. The glitz and the glamour has gone.’ Mr Browning maintains that the changes in some of the strategies are going to stay. ‘There are ten-fold ways to market now. We have virtual marketing available. We already had 360 degree virtual tours available through a camera we started using 18 months ago’. While the first three weeks ‘snookered’ the industry and business, Mr Browning says, ‘people still want to list and sell properties, and people still want to buy them.’

Adaptation Another way that Mr Browning adapted his agency was by introducing virtual auctions. ‘The majority of generation X and Y have been geared that way, so they are comfortable with it’. Fellow realty operator, Fiona Johnson, says she was COVID-19 ready before the virus hit. Selling across the north of the Shire, Fiona says after leaving a busy office to work as a sole trader, she had ‘jumped the gun’ on social distancing in the workplace, and reduced the volume of work she needed to undertake. ‘Working in an office, I had to sell 12 to 20 properties a year to make an income. Now I can sell four properties to achieve that, and have more fun with my little girl. I don’t need the volume of sales. Those going with volume would be affected. I read a report on realestate.com where the vacancies and properties to lease were up 121 per cent from last year’, says Ms Johnson.

The opportunity for an environmental renaissance Paul Bibby A silver lining inside the otherwise dark cloud of COVID19 is the improvement in air and water quality, owing to the decline in car, boat and plane travel. While the sudden decline in tourists has been crippling for the local economy, the upshot is that there is significantly reduced impact on popular natural playgrounds like the beaches of Byron and the Brunswick River. ‘It’s been a bit of

breathing space for our natural environment,’ the President of Brunswick Valley Landcare (BVL), Peter Ryan says. As social distancing rules are gradually eased, Mr Ryan and his colleagues are hoping locals will consider expanding their horizons from the veggie patch to their local creek and beyond. ‘It’s an opportunity to reflect, and we’re hoping to see an increased awareness of, and interest in, projects that improve the biodiversity

of this area,’ he said. Among the projects BVL will be focusing on is the continued restoration of Simpsons Creek and its surrounding wetlands.

ĶīŕĶǕĈëŕƐ ĈſĕĕŊ ‘A lot of people don’t realise how significant Simpsons Creek is,’ Mr Ryan said. ‘It starts way behind Ewingsdale, under the road, then winds its way northwards, through Tyagarah, and eventually forms the northern estuary at Brunswick Heads and the Brunswick River.’ A few landholders have restored sections of the creek, and native fish, like mullet, have been sighted. However, large parts have had their fringing vegetation

The Worland family at Simpsons Creek: Keziah, Narayana, Jaga, Anna, Vrinda and Dee. Photo Jeff Dawson removed, affecting biodiversity and water quality. Periodic maintenance of new plantings is needed, and Mr Ryan hopes to make this project a priority when

outdoor gatherings are legal again. ‘In terms of gatherings, I think getting together for regen work is among the safest.’ Landholders interested in

creek restoration and riparian revegetation are invited to contact Brunswick Valley Landcare for advice and assistance. Visit www.brunswickvalleylandcare.org.au.

Jungala on recovery path after amputation Eve Jeffery The legs of Uncle Pete Birch Marshall – or Jungala, as he is also known – have taken him a long way in this life. Born to Ethel Birch, Pete arrived under a birthing tree at Rapid Creek, near Darwin, in 1959. ‘I was taken from there when I was about a week old. My grandfather came to get me, but I was gone.’ Pete was adopted from the The Retta Dixon Home several weeks later by Arthur and Lydia Marshall. Pete says the Marshalls were good people that helped out Indigenous mobs across the Top End. From the time he learned to walk, his legs served him well. At first with his parents in Arnhem Land, through his teenage years travelling the country, and then when they carried him to Byron Bay in around 1985. At that time he was ‘adopted’ by another great woman, Aunty Linda Vidler. He met a local fella, Mick Kay and the two became great mates, walking many miles together. At around this time, he began dancing with the Byron Bay mob and he has

The Echo spoke to Pete from his hospital bed on the weekend. He says he’s feeling pretty good after the surgery. ‘I’m feeling a lot better than I was!’ Pete has been dealing with diabetes for a while. He says it’s a mixture of

that disease, and smoking, which sent him down the path to amputation. ‘I was in so much pain, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.’ Pete says he feels positive about getting a prosthetic leg. ‘I’m hoping to be back dancing really soon,’ said Pete. ‘Even if I have to make a wooden leg and bang it with sticks like a drum!’.

Go Fund Pete Former Byron business chamber president, Paul Waters, along with others, have organised a fundraiser to buy Pete a great prosthetic leg. As of Tuesday, nearly $9,000 had been raised. Marine Rescue receives upgrade On Tuesday morning at the Byron Bay Lighthouse, local state MP, Tamara Smith (Greens), announced $47,100 in funding for Marine Rescue Cape Byron, through the Community Building Partnerships Program. Ms Smith said the equipment that Marine Rescue Byron can now purchase will save lives. ‘Cape Byron is well overdue for upgrades, and this funding starts that process’. Ms Smith said the new camera equipment will increase the capacity of the service to respond to emergencies in real time. ‘Marine

Rescue Byron has played a vital role in many important rescue missions and it’s essential that they have firstclass equipment for those rescue missions and for monitoring conditions. ‘The purchase of a backup generator means that radio room operations can

Local News Psychologist speaks of COVID-19 School’s back – with a staged strategy mental health impacts Paul Bibby

Paul Bibby Recent arrivals in the Shire are among those whose mental health has been most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, a local psychologist says. As the COVID curve continues its downward trajectory in NSW, attention is turning to the broader social impacts of the crisis, including mental illness. And while the mental health risks for older people in isolation have been well documented, Dr Cara Wong from the Health Lodge in Byron Bay has observed a more surprising local trend. ‘I’ve been seeing quite a lot of people who moved to the area recently, but haven’t made strong social connections yet’, says Dr Wong. ‘They’re already a bit vulnerable, because they don’t know that many people. ‘And now they can’t go out, they can’t meet anyone – they came here to start this new life in the Northern Rivers, but they can’t do that.’ Dr Wong says many younger locals have also been affected. ‘I’ve had quite a few younger clients who are feeling quite socially isolated and then becoming quite depressed and down, feeling a bit hopeless’, she said. ‘In some cases they were working in hospitality, and now they’re not having many work prospects.’ For other clients, the dual pressures of financial stress and having to juggle work

commitments and homeschooling have also taken a mental toll. Unfortunately, financial difficulty has deterred some from seeking help. ‘When the social distancing laws first came into effect, we had a sudden increase in cancellations. ‘Thankfully, that’s starting to change as the system has adapted, and psychologists are being more flexible in terms of payment arrangements. ‘But there’s still this sense of financial uncertainty for a lot of people. What will the future hold? Will I have a job in six months?’ Dr Wong echoed the advice of a number of other mental health professionals who have stressed the importance of self-care during the COVID crisis. This includes speaking to a professional when issues arise, looking after your body, making time for relaxing hobbies and activities such as meditation, and being kind to others. ‘We know from a plethora of research studies that looking after our own wellbeing has untold benefits not just for ourselves, but for those around us’, she says. ‘This is particularly important for those of us who are parents. Children read parents far more than they read news feeds and articles. Emotions and behaviour are contagious; we just have to look at the toilet paper hoarding to observe this first hand!’.

Local parents may be breathing a sigh of relief at the staged return of kids to school this week, but the challenge has only just begun for the schools themselves. Schools across the region are juggling the logistics of transitioning, with most students coming back one day a week, while still meeting strict hygiene and social

distancing requirements. Byron Public School, one of the largest in the Shire, has devised a return plan based on its sports houses, with each house returning to school for one day each week. ‘Students will be spread out across double/ triple classrooms to ensure appropriate social distancing’, parents were told in last week’s school newsletter.

‘For those students who need to attend every day, on their ‘non-allocated day’, they will be assigned to a Learning Hub.’ Likewise, Mullum Primary School are also staging a cautious one day a week return to learning, which includes asking parents and carers not to come into the school and to instead drop their children off at the school gates from their vehicle.

A peek inside a rehab centre under lockdown Photo & story Eve Jeffery Like most health and wellbeing facilities, The Buttery has had to adjust to the rules put in place by COVID-19. And like many organisations who help those in need of rehab, The Buttery has also had an increase in people enquiring about programs, both residential and community-based. A Buttery spokesperson said that those already taking part in communitybased programs are reported by counsellors to be more engaged with the programs. They said, ‘In the case of people with gambling issues, people who used to gamble using pokies are finding other ways to gamble online. Some have expressed concern about this, because online gambling is not as regulated as poker machines. ‘For example, self-exclusion opportunities that apply to clubs are not available for online platforms’. The Buttery has also had to be aware of the new health department rules. In the early stages of the pandemic, participants in The Buttery’s residential

Counsellors in The Buttery’s residential treatment program, Azriel Re’shel and Anna Mavay, have become accustomed to working together, apart. program were practising social distancing, and more stringent hygiene practises were introduced. These are still in place. No new residents have joined the program for the past six weeks, and there have been no visitors since then. Staff are practising social isolation and many staff are working from home. All community outreach programs are being delivered remotely.

Fast-tracking The development of a free app to help people manage their mental health, substance use and/or gambling challenges is being fast-tracked. The spokesperson said that they are currently working with NSW Health to develop a safe way for The Buttery’s residential programs to accept new participants. No new residents will be received until The Buttery is confident it will be

100 per cent safe to do so. Until then, The Buttery is offering a free, four-week program online to allow more people to get help with their alcohol and other drug issues, without the need to join a residential program. The Buttery has adapted its popular Community Rehab Program, or CORE. The CORE ‘day-hab’ has never been offered online before. CORE is an evidencebased model of intensive rehabilitation, which has revolutionised the practice of addiction treatment. Many people who would benefit from a long-term stay at The Buttery, or other rehab facilities, are unable to do so, not only because of the pandemic, but also because of long waiting lists, or owing to personal circumstances, such as parenting or carer responsibilities. The program’s manager, Tanya Magnay, says CORE will be delivered from June

1 for four weeks, Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 1pm. It will include group and individual therapy. The program will also provide meditation and online peer support for participants. People taking part will be able to access case management and advocacy, and support with referral into other agencies for issues such as education or accommodation. The program will be followed by aftercare, to help prevent relapse. ‘This concept is not only more cost-effective than residential rehab, it is flexible enough to help people during the pandemic who would never have been able to put their family commitments on hold to seek intensive rehab.’ Organisers see the challenges for CORE will be ensuring that participants can work within the technical aspects of online platforms in the same way that everyone who is meeting remotely has to. For some people who are shy in groups, a remote program may be beneficial. It will also be of benefit to people who do not have reliable transport and struggle to get to face-to-face meetings. To find out more about the program, visit The Buttery website: www.buttery. org.au/community-basedrehab-program/ or call The Buttery during office hours on 6687 1111.

How’s your homeschooling going? Photo & story Eve Jeffery Thousands of parents, grandparents and caregivers across the country have had to take a crash course in homeschooling in recent weeks. James and Chiyoko Parrett of Eureka have had their two children in their kitchen, when they used to be down the road at Eureka Public School. Haruki is 10, and currently in grade five, and Ikumi is seven and in grade two – James and Chiyoko say there are definitely challenges, but they are enjoying it. ‘I think generally homeschooling has been going pretty well for us,’ said James. ‘Chiyoko and I have been lucky that we have been able to find the time to homeschool. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but we all still like each other, and I feel like we have all learnt about each other’. James says one of the positive aspects has been seeing the kids learn and how they go about it as individuals. ‘There have been some days where it all goes bad, but we have tried to be

kind to everyone in those situations and maybe taken a break, or we’ve done something different. That doesn’t always work though. ‘The kids have been dealing with it okay. Haruki has been able to interact with the other students via Zoom, and is more mature so has been able to adjust well. ‘Ikumi hasn’t had as many opportunities to interact with other students, so he has found it harder. You can see the ups and downs in him. I think everyone has had ups and downs during this strange time. We have been as honest as possible about what’s been going on in the world’.

James says they have been trying to have a homeschooling day look like a regular day at school, timewise. The school has supplied a daily planner which has helped organise the day. James feels that as the situation has been new and demanding for everyone, especially teachers and the support staff at school, there have been no guidelines as to what is expected in the way

school, because the teachers have been able to try and communicate with everybody on a personal level.’ James says they have been receiving telephone calls every one-to-two days, so the teachers can quickly catch up with the kids and the senior class have been having Zoom meetings for group activities and to explain some things. ‘From a parents point of view, every time we have had

a question or problem it has been responded to quickly’.

Screen time Parents who like to limit screen time have also found the use of a computer is a large part of classes. ‘I feel that computers have been used a lot. The school has said that most of the work can be done on paper and sent in, but in our house, most of it has been done on the computer or

iPad. We are looking forward to having the kids back at school where there can be more of a mixture of activities away from the screen’. James says young Ikumi gets distracted easily and also doesn’t like being taught by his parents. ‘I have seen the way he acts in class as opposed to homeschooling, and he is much more focused at school,’ he said. ‘Haruki said to me last night, “No offence, but I’m really excited about going back to school”.’ James says he has leant that he’s not the most patient person in the world, and has felt frustrated at times. ‘Chiyoko is a lot more relaxed than me, so maybe as a team we work well together’. ‘Again, we are very lucky that we haven’t had lots of other pressures on our family during this time. It’s a bad situation for everybody in the world and we are really lucky to be living where we live’. And the couple’s opinion of teachers? James says ‘Our teachers are the best, and we love them and all the hard work they do. Teachers should be respected more’.

OPEN FOR FEEDBACK – PUBLIC EXHIBITION PROPOSAL TO REZONE PART OF 54 PARROT TREE PLACE, BANGALOW FROM RU1 PRIMARY PRODUCTION TO R2 LOW DENSITY RESIDENTIAL A planning proposal that intends to rezone approximately 690m² of land at 54 Parrot Tree Place, Bangalow from RU1 Primary Production to R2 Low Density Residential is now on public exhibition. The draft planning proposal is on exhibition, for your comments, for a period of 4 weeks from 29 April to 29 May 2020 and is available for viewing on Council’s website at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/Public-Notice. The existing R2 residential zone boundary was created in accordance with the requirement of a 400 metre buffer to the Bangalow sewage treatment plant located to the south west of the site. A recent survey has indicated that the original buffer line was incorrectly mapped, and corrected, would allow for an additional 690m² of land to be rezoned to residential. It is anticipated that this extra residential zoning will enable two extra residential lots. The floor space ratio (FSR) and minimum lot size maps will also be amended to reflect a residential zoning ie FSR of 0.5:1 and minimum lot size from 40 hectares to 300m². The Minister for Planning and Public Spaces has issued an authorisation for Council to exercise delegation to make this LEP amendment. For information on making a submission, and where to address it, refer to the “Make a submission” section of Council’s weekly advertising. Preparing for a second virus wave

The Byron Shire Echo Volume 34 #49 • May 13, 2020

Not confused enough What do bureaucrats do if they want to simplify complex planning laws? Create another one! In an effort to consolidate Council and state government policies and laws that constrain the never-ending appetite for building new stuff, a new ‘overarching’ document has been foisted upon all NSW Councils by the NSW Liberal-Nationals government. It’s called a Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS), and when adopted, will work alongside other such masterworks as the NSW Government’s North Coast Regional Plan and Council’s Community Strategic Plan (CSP), Local Environment Plans (LEP) and Development Control Plans (DCP). While the Local Strategic Planning Statement has just wrapped up its public exhibition phase, it’s described as a ‘live’ document, meaning that it will be tinkered with and refined at the whim of councillors and planning staff. So there will be more opportunity to look closer at it in coming years. Why does this matter? Because if you and your neighbours are faced with large inappropriate development, these are the documents to know, both in the pre-DA stage and in any Land & Environment Court case. Along with this suite of growth management strategies (also called ‘instruments’) are ‘place based strategic plans’. Council planning staff say within their LSPS materials that Place-based plans for Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Bangalow have been completed. ‘More recently in February 2020, our Business and Industrial Lands Strategy was completed. As other strategies and plans become finalised, such as the Byron Shire Residential Strategy, new priority actions will be included in the LSPS’. Fun fact: A DCP has little to no weight with court rulings. As the public discovered in last year’s Land & Environment decision (bit.ly/3fD7Uvb) that favoured a contentious tourist hotel at 4 Marvell Street, Byron Bay, place based strategic plans are not always regarded as the final word – it’s planning staff’s opinion and ‘flexibility’ that can also determine planning decisions. While acknowledging the town’s masterplan, Commissioner Jenny Smithson also said that ‘cl 4.6 [Exceptions to development standards] exists in the LEP to allow flexibility to vary standards, subject to compliance with the requirements of that clause’. She wrote, ‘It would have no work to do if the Council did not allow any variations on the basis of the potential adverse precedent of varying development standards, per se’. Putting aside the attractive idea of Council planning staff having no work to do, the complex and chaotic world of planning appears to serve the few, not many. But then, the few make money from the many by selling/ renting them a place to live that hopefully isn’t a fire trap or structurally compromised. So isn’t that a good thing? Hans Lovejoy, editor

he latest catchphrase from our government spin doctors is ‘a COVIDSafe economy’ – optimistic and reassuring. And, unfortunately, a cruel hoax; a contradiction in terms. The economy is not safe from this coronavirus, and almost certainly never will be. Even if a vaccine can be created (and it may not be) it will not be foolproof – there will always be outlying cases, or clusters that lie dormant, only to suddenly reappear. Some people will personally be immune, but will remain carriers – Typhoid Marys. And it is always possible that the virus will mutate and return in a new and even more virulent form. We may, hopefully, repress it – have it sufficiently under control to claim that it is time to get back to something like normality. But to declare that ‘the war’ is over is not only untrue, but dangerously so. This is the problem with magic bullets, and it is now clear that Scott Morrison’s key initiatives have not, and cannot, deliver the rainbow gold he desperately craves. His two king-hits – JobKeeper and the COVID app – are now revealed to be both flawed and incomplete. This is not to dismiss them as failures – they are both thoroughly worthwhile policies that will save many lives and bring us closer to dismantling the lockdowns for which we are yearning – but it is to warn against false complacency. The outbreaks in the Newmarch nursing home and the Cedar abattoir are ominous. And more worryingly still, the emergence of cases of infection with source unknown, can all too easily be seen as the start of a second wave. It is not yet time to excise the ‘dem’ from pandemic, but we will need more than well-marketed nostrums before calling the situation safe. JobKeeper, apart from not including well over a million affected workers declared as non-essential, has not been taken up with the gusto that was promised; almost a fifth of the six million Australians said to be eligible for assistance have not been drawn into the safety net, and probably will not be. Business, as always, blames red tape and bureaucracy, but it is likely that many employers simply do not regard it as worthwhile – they are

happy to abandon their employees to the dubious mercies of Centrelink and concentrate on looking after their own welfare and that of their shareholders.

Isolation is becoming intolerable; suicides are increasing, the economy is disappearing further down the toilet, the political pressures can no longer be withstood Mungo MacCallum And the app is not the universal panacea that was hoped. Some people cannot use it at all, others don’t understand the technology, sceptics don’t trust the government, and even when it is working (which is not always), it may not produce the results Morrison regards as necessary for the great rollback for liberation. But what the hell – isolation is becoming intolerable; suicides are increasing, the economy is disappearing further down the toilet, the political pressures can no longer be withstood. So, coming ready or not – as one earwig said to the other, ‘ere we go!’. Well, up to a point. A more accurate summary of Morrison’s three-stage road map is that we are starting to prepare to consider how, when and where we can be freed from lockdown, and even this will be a piecemeal business with the states moving (or not) in their own ways, and in their own directions. Not exactly a roadmap, more as Victorian premier Daniel Andrews put it, a menu, from which they can pick and choose from the decisions of what is misleadingly called the national cabinet. And it is already clear that there will be vast and confusing disparities. The most obvious one is that the outlying states and territories are moving much faster than the powerhouses of New South Wales and Victoria; where the combined activity of the CBDs of their two capitals account for more than 20 per cent of the entire national economy. And there, Andrews and Gladys Berejiklian are being very cautious indeed. They have comprehensively rejected

Morrison’s gung-ho, crash through approach in favour of tiptoeing towards progress – no snapback there, more a matter of sidling through the partly open doors of detention. It may speed up in due course – there is to be a review of the landscape in three weeks, and the hope is still that something vaguely approaching normal conditions may be reached by the end of July. But it will be a long way from Morrison’s aspirations. The prime minister tells us that Treasury is forecasting that some 850,000 of the million-plus jobs lost during the restrictions will return, or be replaced, by the end of July. Given the reluctance of the business community to embrace either JobKeeper or JobSeeker this seems more than a touch rosy-coloured, but it is, after all, his mission to talk things up – as far as possible without being absurd – and it must be said, he is making a pretty good fist of it. But it is dubious that his sanguine predictions will be believed by the public, which may also be aware of the more dire (and perhaps more realistic) premonitions of the Reserve Bank. Governor Philip Lowe anticipates unemployment will reach over 10 per cent at the end of June, falling only slowly to nine per cent by the end of this year, and 7.5 per cent by the end of next year, leading up to the federal election, due in the first half of 2022. This is not the scenario Morrison was parading last week, and it is certainly not the return to normal that the voters were promised, and expected. They have been kept in suspense for a long time, and last week’s announcements may be seen not just as an anticlimax, but as more implausible pie-in-the-sky, jam tomorrow, the Christmas that never comes. At best, Morrison’s announcement may be regarded as encouraging; at least there is some kind of a plan, whether it’s called a road map, a menu, or a laundry list. But as the man says himself, what matters is the outcome. Obviously we are still a long way from that, and it may not be pretty when it comes. Not COVIDSafe, and, perhaps more importantly from the government’s point of view, not the guarantee required for ScoMo’s own political survival.

Letters Time to renew In a recent column, Mungo described those who expect the imminent death of capitalism, thanks to the impact of the dreaded lurgi, as ‘utopian dreamers’. I’m inclined to agree given the enthusiastic resurgence of human greed and its attendant carpetbaggers after many major disasters throughout history. However, there is some hope for change in the fact that the smart money is on renewables. Charles Donovan, director of the grand-sounding Centre for Climate Finance and Investment, Imperial College Business School, notes, ‘Clean energy is not just affordable and reliable, it also offers the highest return on investment. Investors have a growing appetite to put money to work in sustainable finance. Governments need to re-write the rules so that they can.’ Mr Donovan is quoted in an Oxford University news release headed ‘Building back better: A net-zero emissions recovery’. A team of experts, including Joseph Stiglitz, and Nicholas Stern, assessed ‘the economic and climate impact of taking a green route out of the crisis’. The economists found that ‘green projects create more jobs, deliver higher short-term returns per dollar spent, and lead to increased long-term cost savings, by comparison with traditional fiscal stimulus’. More details here: https://bit.ly/3c9T90O. Hopefully governments, including ours, can tear themselves loose from their fossil-fuel donors and participate in the renewal. Is that utopian dreaming? Who runs Australia? In 1998 when Hong Kong went Chinese, the Rigg family left, and built a house in Myocum. Chris Rigg was leaving Hong Kong after a career in finance. He took several years out in Oz and had two kids here, but went eventually to London. We stayed in touch, and I met him annually when visiting my London family. Point is: he ran a serious big-league hedge fund in London, and he told me the finance whizzes of the City of London refer to Australia as ‘Treasure Island’, for obvious reasons. We’ve flogged the lot and made the ‘City’ rich. Ron Priestley Main Arm

[on this issue] indicates it would never make a profit. As the majority of business and agricultural activity occurs along the east coast, governments would do a lot better to revive the railway along the Pacific coast, and build a link between Murwillumbah and Brisbane and revive, or even build, more feeder lines. Freight depots in the larger towns would increase employment in those areas. Governments are always claiming they are trying to encourage people to move to rural areas but they do little other than pork barreling by moving government departments to rural towns. If people were assured they could visit their local large centre in the morning, and return by evening, this would go a long way toward encouraging people to remain in more remote areas, and may even encourage people to move to these areas. Nowadays, such services could be remotely controlled – which would lower the costs further. David Gilet Byron Bay

West Byron It is interesting to note that the ‘local’ landowners of West Byron who have applied for this DA to build between 800 and 1000 houses on a fragile sea-level floodplain are somewhat non-committal about their plans and deliberations for the area. They don’t even seem to know exactly how many houses will be constructed there. If they were absolutely genuine in their hopes and aspirations for the longterm benefit of the community of Byron Bay and its residential community, surely they would be promoting their case at every opportunity. Wouldn’t they be singing its praises from the rooftops, running articles in The Echo about its possibly cuttingedge sustainable build quality? But they are not! Their silence is ominous! Covert and complicit? There is no doubt that these ‘local’ landholders are not embarking on this enormous development for fun, or as a philanthropic gesture to the town of Byron Bay. They are fulfilling all of the compliance regulations of due process and

That’s the only way the snail can avoid extinction, like teosinte corn, which is extinct in the wild, but survives in gardens across the world. With fewer than 600 individuals remaining, extinction is certain over time, with or without the Byron bypass, unless we start eating them. So come on folks; Save the Snail. Eat some today. Media watch A lot of people are justifiably sceptical about the official narrative, and there’s good reason to doubt the credibility of mainstream media. We need only recall the lies that led to the war on Iraq to demonstrate that governments and corporate-controlled media can be complicit in large-scale deceptions and psychological operations against the general population. With this reality in mind, it behoves us to subject every official narrative to rigorous critical analysis. In so doing, we are bound to encounter flak from two main sources. Of course, we’re opposed by sponsors of the official narrative; the ruling elite, the one per cent, the establishment, the powers that be, whatever you want to call them. These are the high-powered antagonists of independent thought and diversity of opinion, they have the power to shut down critics and marginalise alternative viewpoints. We also face opposition from well-meaning but essentially incurious citizens who reflexively accept the official narrative; people who have no interest in researching the issues for themselves, and who view questioning authority as dangerous to civil society. And so we strive to intrigue and enlighten these people. John Scrivener Main Arm

Life in a brave new COVID-19 world Q Am I the only one who feels that right now we are living in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World? Our government tells us we are flattening the COVID-19 curve! Great news! People are saying, ‘Isn’t that wonderful!’ But is it worth it? In complying with the government agenda, particularly at state level, we have forfeited our freedom as individuals, and generally speaking, are living under police-state regimes. Too strong? Consider the facts. 1) To this point in time, deaths from COVID-19, circa 100, represent only a tiny fraction of usual numbers of deaths from the flu (at 1,500-3,000 per season). 2) Essentially, we have been made prisoners in our own homes, for many weeks, with lists of what we can and can’t do, under threat of police action if we do not comply. Police action? Laws created overnight that allow heavy fines for disobedience. 3) Some premiers are glorying in their extended power, introducing what, to many, would seem provocative actions and further restrictions to the national agenda – ‘to keep us safe’. This is all reminiscent of Huxley’s famous novel. A slow but certain breaking down of the individual – particularly any individual who dares to be different – and a glorification of the State. Jeremy Gilder Myocum Q For evidence-based medicine, don’t look beyond Italy, where flu-vaccinated people died at a higher rate from COVID-19. So the NRL players are, in my opinion, wrongly advised by the PM, and medical fraternity, to take the shots. I believe that these vaccines usually contain serious toxins. Before ScoMo and today’s doctors were born, we had implicit faith in government and medicine. Then laissez-faire capitalism saw corporate pharmaceutical giants become globalised, setting the agenda for governments and world governing bodies. If Australia is any indication, it’s a very profitable business model. Health evolved into a mammoth sickness industry, where customers hardly need to show ID or use a bankcard. Natural health modalities are squeezed out. This is a system the majority of us have been conditioned to trust, by sheer power of money and influence.

Call it mind control, advertising, or political spin. We need solid evidence for COVID19 solutions. But Big Pharma is not required to prove that vaccines work. Hayo van der Woude Mullumbimby Q ‘Increases to welfare payments under COVID-19 must be made permanent, so that all recipients can afford a decent place to live,’ according to Anglicare North Coast’s CEO, quoted in last week’s front page article in The Echo, by Paul Bibby. To finance the COVID-19 business and community emergency assistance programs, the Federal Government has borrowed billions of dollars. This assistance will be available and sustainable until all the funds are distributed. When welfare payments return to normal, a ‘decent place to live’ will still be unaffordable in the Northern Rivers. When we moved here over a decade ago, we felt it was desirable to acquire a property similar to that which we left in the Manning Valley. As affordability was the top requirement, we moved to a location we could afford. Back to suburban living after fifty years. Here are some realestate.com median rental prices for three bedroom properties: Byron Bay: $850, Ocean Shores: $600, Banora Point: $520 Murwillumbah: $470, Taree: $340, Grafton: $355, Bathurst: $350. No one knows how many future generations of Australian taxpayers we have saddled with repaying the massive loan. John Youdan Ocean Shores Q So much paranoia about this government, Robert Podhajsky [Letters Echo 6 May]. So much trivialisation of the suffering that people are enduring. COVID-19 is not a flu. I have heard people describe appalling symptoms; such as feeling like being hammered on the head, stabbed all over the body, broken glass noises in the lungs, and suffocating – from people of all ages. When informed I had a positive test result, I thought I was going to die. It is that serious. Lucky for me (lucky, as there is insufficient data collection right now) I had a ‘mild’ case of the illness. I had difficulty in breathing out, every day, for four weeks. I have been very happy to talk with

people from NSW Health who are interviewing people to get data. What the government is concerned with is care. Care for us. That’s what I got: from the doctors and staff at Byron Hospital, the registered nurses who rang me every day, the doctors who rang me four times, the local doctor and health department officials who rang twice. I wonder if people like Robert, after contracting the illness, would still write the way they do? The COVIDSafe tracking app is there to protect you, Robert, from when you come into proximity with someone (who is confirmed as having COVID-19), which may require you to get tested. Raphael Lee Cass Byron Bay Q Roaming surveillance robots coming to a public space near you? The world’s most powerful leader advocating drinking disinfectant? A culture and society dumbing down? Of course not, no complaints, thank you very much. Rod Murray Ocean Shores Q Makes you wonder. World governments are blaming each other for having caused the effect of a so-called new natural mutated virus killing so many people. Fault can be found in all Government reactions to the spread of COVID-19. I first read something about a new virus in December 2019, by just checking the news on the web. My first reaction was interest. It was a new virus in China, and they had started to react to the situation. Last year the Australian Government had the Christmas Island detention centre re-opened because of changes to medevac laws. When I saw on TV the PM confirming that Australian people were going to be flown to the detention centre from the cruise ship in Japan, my first impression was: he already knew something else about the situation, and was pleased that he could inform us. The governments laying blame on others for COVID-19 all have bio security labs, where, for years the coronavirus has been used in experimentation, kept almost secret from public scrutiny, in the name of looking after the health of human beings. The wonderful upsides of social isolation Phillip Frazer

canals of Venice may be fake news, but Venetians can see jellyfish where, just weeks ago, there was nothing but liquid crud. And consider the more subtle changes; little

liberations brought on by isolating and distancing. It’s great to be free to see no one and do nothing! The freedom to meet each day with no obligations of the leave-home sort.

Freedom to do all the things, or at least some, that you’ve been meaning to do for decades: such as sort the photos, the recipes, underwear, boxes of screws and bolts, almost empty bottles of cleaning fluids – and everything else you can sort. Freedom not to do things like planning every day of that 21-day holiday in Central America or Scandinavia. The urges that emerge in isolation, like mushrooms that grow in the dark, are also fascinating. There’s the urge (or is it a need?) to expose, reveal, confess, and empathise out in the open – to weep, and admit to weeping, on the Facebook posts of all your friends. There’s also the phenomenon of people posting photos of themselves as beguiling youths, or examples of former brilliance in gymnastics, or playing obscure instruments, or being young and frightened by explosions of weltschmerz (which is

of view, having our increasingly pro-development mayor as the sole arbiter of development applications would have been a wonderful bonus. Then again, with the currently unfavourable prospects of the tourism industry, the boom seems to have been nipped in the bud. Perhaps the mayor could act in a way consistent with his new responsibilities, by explaining how and why closing car parks reduces the

risk of COVID-19 infection? Perhaps he could also explain why swimming pools are closed when chlorine kills all living things? Finally, would it challenge your resources too much to install a soap dispenser in the public loo at Bangalow,

in keeping with the ‘wash your hands’ routine for which you are now the local representative. That’s right, you wanted to be emperor, but ended up a janitor. Fast Buck$ Coorabell

ne of the terrible things about our global virus-mania is the endless recitations on tele, online, and everywhere else about where we’re no longer allowed to go (of all the terrible things!). But how about the wonderful things it has done to us, or for us? Like draining the swamp known as our atmosphere from the billions of cars, trucks, buses, planes, trains, and electricity-generating power plants, and factories all over the planet – all running at half-pace since we’ve been obliged to stop running so much. From downtown Los Angeles to the Himalayas (as seen from India for the first time in living memory) the air is clearer. The waterways too are reviving since the industrial and agricultural runoffs around the globe have abated. The dolphins in the

Mayoral powers The wider community had a rare win at the last Council meeting. A majority of councillors rejected a cunning move by Council staff to give the mayor broad powers for six months in order, supposedly, to deal with the virus emergency. No doubt the Nationals, the big end of town, and the staff are disappointed that those councillors aren’t quite as gullible as thought. From the right-wing point

German for a deep sadness about the inadequacy or imperfection of the world). The urge to scream like the sweet and prim music teacher in the video – where she tinkles a few bars into a sugary tune on her ukelele, lifts her head to sing, and then screams, like the woman in Munch’s painting (or the fat cat in the version of the painting accompanying this article). That video has been watched more times than the

one in which Trump suggests we can beat this coronavirus by mainlining bleach. I keep making notes of other liberations, large and small, in our gargantuan social world, slowed down by a sub-microscopic virus, brainless, and with no more purpose than the rest of the benignly indifferent universe. Q Phillip Frazer muses on the state of things from the clear air of coorabellridge.com.

MULLUM CREEK NATIVE NURSERY CLOSING DOWN SALE After 25 years Mullum Creek Native Nursery is closing down. Owner Brad Green is retiring after being in the nursery industry for 37 years. “I will be sad to see it go”, says Brad. “But I feel good to have been involved in supplying over 1 million plants in the local area over the last 25 years. I started this nursery from scratch, and what began as a small revegetation nursery supplying local native plants to Landcare and Dunecare groups, expanded into producing 50,000 to 100,000 plants a year. “It’s such a great feeling to see all my seedlings (babies) go out into the wild. I just love it. In the last few years the nursery has given away free over 8,000 koala trees

to help the local koala population. Customers come in and say how well the trees have grown”. Over the years Brad has increased the number of varieties propagated to over 300 different species.

“I always want to try something different. With this large range of plants the nursery has been a mecca for gardeners wanting beautiful native gardens. “I would like to say a special big thank you to all the

MANDY NOLAN’S

SOAPBOX WHY WE MISS FAT ADELE While flattening the COVID-curve has forced us inside to bake sourdough and increase our curves, one woman has flattened her curves entirely. Adele. No longer rolling in the deep, possibly floating now, like a tiny leaf. Newsflash; Adele has lost weight. She’s barely recognisable. She now looks like every other successful woman in the media. She could now be mistaken for a newsreader, an actor, or a TV personality. She’s got what tabloid mags dub a ‘Revenge Body’. Not that Adele’s taking revenge, it’s just one of the clichéd ways the media have of describing women’s bodies, as if they were something you could order online to punish wayward men with. Adele is now what’s known in the media as ‘hot’; she’s thin, and gorgeous. And conventional, in the cookie cutter way dominant culture demands. Adele possibly feels the best she’s felt in years, and possibly feels a huge sense of achievement, and is feeling younger and fitter and has more energy. She has avoided diabetes, is healthier, and has probably achieved the thing we all find harder than multiple orgasms – moderation. And we don’t like it. We don’t recognise skinny Adele. We miss fat Adele. Women all around the world feel weirdly let down. Their chubby champion is no more. It’s a strange betrayal. Surely her body belongs to no one else but her? Ironically, even though she operated outside the dominant narrative, her body and its deviance from the norm was a part of why we loved Adele. Thin or fat, she was still objectified. Except in a weird way she was objectified by women who feel diminished by the lack of body-positive role models. Being a body-positive hero is a cursed chalice; on the one hand, the love and fan identification is magnified, on the other – you’re just as trapped as any thin chick, because you have to stay fat for the world. That’s a big responsibility: staying big. But I’ll admit it. Even I felt a bit sad that Adele had hung up the carbs. I even worried that she’d struggle to find the power in that voice without that body. No more full-length dresses. Hello short skirt. I loved that Adele had pushed through to the top of her game without the bump and grind of JLo, or Beyonce, or Brittney, or Shakira. And she’d done it while still wearing pants. She’d done it in a floor-length velour and diamante gown. This Tottenham lass with the wonderfully huge and unapologetic arse. An arse only eclipsed by her massive voice, and even bigger personality. It’s kind of wrong to admit it, because it’s really not fair to the person who is Adele, but a lot of us loved fat Adele, not just because of her voice and her charisma – but the whole package. Her confidence. The way she held the world stage. She was like an oasis of hope for every woman who woke up and looked at her defiant curves with loathing. She was a deviation in a pervasive narrative about body conformity. A relief that we, as women, might be valued for our merit not our rock hard abs. There’s a trillion thin Adeles with amazing voices. But not so many non-stereotypical divas adored on a world stage the way she was. I’m actually struggling to name any. It’s like there’s a quota for talented, successful, and dearly loved chubby women. It’s like there’s an agreement that only a select few body-positive women can be let through. Chubby heroes like Rebel Wilson. (Who, btw, is also dropping the kilos). The world adores her too. It’s not just the chubbiness. These women exude charisma. They are the relatable relief, the ones you can rest your eyes on who don’t leave you feeling less than you are. You see, women measure themselves. Not just on scales in the bathroom. They measure themselves against each other. It’s unspoken. But when one of our fat chick friends loses weight, we say ‘you look amazing’ and we mean it, and then we hate ourselves. Perhaps we need to give ourselves AND Adele a break, open the door and let through all the talented chubby girls waiting on the other side.

E N T E R T A I N M E N T WHO’S AFRAID? A LIVING ZOOM DRAMA! While the rest of the country can gather in groups of 10, Gladys has decided to keep us indoors a little longer! The last few months have driven many of us inside, with performers and creatives wondering how they can turn this lockdown into an opportunity. For Mandy Nolan, this provided an opportunity to present one of her favourite pieces. ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is one of my absolute favourite pieces of writing’ she says. ‘It’s complex, turgid, it is disturbing, it’s broken. It’s about love, and what we do to each other, and ourselves. Most people know the movie with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor – which was extraordinary, but the 1962 Edward Albee play, I believe, is even better when you hear the full play – a lot of it was missing from that screenplay.’ Mandy decided to direct a Zoom reading of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with the two central characters of Martha and George coming to her immediately. ‘You can’t do this without having someone who is exactly perfect as Martha AND George.’ So Mandy asked Linda Rutledge to read Martha, and Mark Swivel to read George. ‘I have seen Linda in plays over the years, and always thought she was a remarkably powerful actor. Pre COVID-19 I had the thought of what a perfect Martha she’d make. I thought at the time

STARS BY LILITH

that my friend Mark Swivel would be a great George’. As it turns out, Linda and Mark both loved the play as much as Mandy, with Linda admitting that it was one of her performing goals to play Martha! Mark introduced Mandy to Mick Webb and Madeleine Lipson, who are the perfect Nick and Honey. ‘I can’t believe how good they all are’ says Mandy. ‘This is a very long and complex play. And this is a complex time. We haven’t been able to gather – we have only been able to have a few reading rehearsals on Zoom, with everyone at their respective houses. But it seems ideal, at a time when we are all driven indoors with our nearest and dearest, that perhaps a play about how it can all come undone is perfect!’ Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? runs an astonishing four hours! That being the case, Mandy decided to present the rehearsed reading over three nights: an act each night. ‘Why not? There must be nothing left to watch on Netflix! This is a great opportunity to reacquaint yourself with a classic.’ The rehearsed reading via Zoom is free, and will be held on Friday 22 May, Saturday 23 May and Sunday 24 May – all at 7.30pm. If you would like to Zoom in on this epic lockdown cultural soirée, then pour yourself a whisky, and settle in. Email mandy@mandynolan.com.au for your nightly link with the subject header ‘Woolf link’.

TAURUS THE BULL This week, Jupiter and Venus join Saturn and Pluto in retrograde to support retrieving parts of our lives, or ourselves – valuable pieces of our personal puzzle…

ARIES: Your planetary motivator Mars, sinking into low power mode, can feel like walking underwater, or drowning in your own mind. And the upside? It’s simultaneously an inspiring cycle of healing, closure, creative brilliance and amazing realisations, all held in the supportive embrace of a plethora of retro planets.

LEO: Mars delivers a growth spurt to your financial potential this week, but with Venus in a snitchy mood, being stubborn will work against you. Best operating strategies? This week thought you’d never ask. Retrogrades favour words beginning with re: like reconsider, repair and reconnect. But not ones like retreat, rebel, resist or react.

TAURUS: Taureans prefer a certain degree of physical comfort to help get them through tough times, and Venus sashaying into your sector of sensual pleasures and earthy delights for the next six weeks is this year’s birthday gift for Bulls. Any downside? Recurring temptations do fatten the curves…

VIRGO: With Mercury’s present placement you could sell anyone anything, if you keep it simple, elegant and avoid complications. Flamboyant Mars ignites partnership sparks, but also arguments over conflicting opinions, and Venus isn’t at her most compliant. Even so, don’t let your inner critic sabotage this week’s joy.

GEMINI: Expressive, articulate Mercury in your chatty sign has a lot to say, but with Venus retrograde it may be taken the wrong way. If so, use the opportunity to practise Venusian diplomacy in your Gemini network, and upgrade the technical, verbal and media skills needed for navigating the rest of the year.

LIBRA: Are you tired of channeling celebrity obsessive/compulsive Libran Marie Kondo, and itching to hit the reset button? Retrograde planets are currently weighing in heavily on the wait-a-while side. A lot of rebalancing can be done this week along the lines of self-nurture, relationship repair and making home a happier place.

CANCER: Venus retrograde can be a confusing time for relationships if old hurts and trust issues resurface. With Jupiter and Saturn also in lockdown, it means sending some plans back to the drawing board to recalibrate and wait for more supportive circumstances. So what’s this week good for? What water signs do best; going with the flow.

SCORPIO: To quote one of my favorite astrologers, Rob Brezsny, grace emerges in the ebb, as well as the flow, and waning reveals different blessings than waxing. With Mercury and Venus both in mega-chat mode, noise-cancelling headphones are this week’s best accessory for blocking distractions so you can focus on a dormant portal about to open...

SAGITTARIUS: Mercury in effervescent Gemini can be super-effusive, and Sagittarius is a verbally vivacious sign. Currently the quicksilver planet’s recommending an equal balance of give and take in communications of all kinds, as in remembering the two ears for listening/one mouth for talking ratio for this week’s negotiations. CAPRICORN: Jupiter and Pluto’s fourmonth double backspin in Capricorn is a blessing in disguise. Retrogrades are for checking the rearview mirror: has something like this happened before? More than once? Then here’s your chance to crack the pattern. Though don’t expect an easy ride – that isn’t a given in the present circumstances. AQUARIUS: As motivating Mars brings its drive and dynamism to Aquarian confidence levels, what particular area of life would you like to do-over? Mercury in a fellow air-sign is presently firing with ideas, though Venus can be a bit of a drama queen if retrogrades bring up past issues for review, as they tend to. . PISCES: With energy-booster Mars and the weekend moon in your sign, it’s all eyes on Pisces time. Which mostly feels fabulous, though extra-sensitive Venusian mood swings might have you taking some things too personally. In which case, take a break and process things solo, till your perceptions level out.

Vicki Cooper @Realty ‘Somewhere in Melbourne right now, a couple is looking out of the window of their small apartment. It helps me remember them if I give them names… so I’m calling them Steve and Alison. For almost three weeks now Steve and Alison have been talking about an idea. Perhaps it’s more like a dream. A dream they’ve had for a long time, that one day they will leave the crowded, noisy city and find a perfect little spot… somewhere on the North Coast of NSW. Just lately, for one reason or another, that vision has become more urgent. Much more real. I believe there are actually quite a few people like Steve and Alison. I think they are heading our way. And I’m ready.’

And yes it's true, you’ve likely heard of the famous One-Day Installation – that’s them. Based on a steel frame, Humpy-made pods are strong, yet flexible in their design. Ecologists: Council’s snail claims bypass the facts David Milledge

T

he two-page advertisement by Byron Council describing progress on construction of the Byron Bay bypass and containing a number of claims in relation to biodiversity impacts, in my opinion, represents a blatant misrepresentation of the facts. The so-called ‘extensive set of environmental approvals’ was gained on the basis of deficient and inaccurate information, and can hardly be described as a ‘rigorous’ process. ‘Diligent environmental management’ has not been applied in the route selection, impact assessment or implementation of the bypass project. If Council had exercised due diligence, then the findings of their 2001 Species Impact Statement, which stated that the bypass route with the least detrimental impact on biodiversity values was located along the rail corridor, would not have been ignored in the recent assessment and approvals process. Diligent environmental management would not have

involved ignoring the stand of floodplain rainforest at the southern end of the bypass – an endangered ecological community listed under State and Commonwealth legislation, and core habitat for the critically endangered Mitchell’s Rainforest Snail. Diligent environmental management would not have dismissed this floodplain rainforest as swamp paperbark forest ‘with some rainforest elements’ or conversely as ‘marginal habitat’ that ‘does not have rainforest components within the understorey’, and disregarded its presence as ‘not found within or in the vicinity of the site’. Similarly, diligent environmental management would not have described the Mitchell’s Rainforest Snail habitat in the bypass footprint as: ‘the vegetation within the site would not be preferred habitat’, and as only ‘marginal habitat’ for the species – a fact clearly contradicted by the recent discovery of 163 individual snails there during the construction stage. Diligent environmental management also would never have involved the

The Mitchell’s Rainforest Snail has been at the centre of debate over the Byron Bypass. Image: Facts About Snails relocation of these snails into the area of rainforest between the bypass and existing town development that includes a section of the rail corridor. This is an area that Council recently resolved to urge State government to prioritise for the removal of its vegetation. If Council had conducted a rigorous assessment of the impact of the current route, early in the development process, and obtained the information on biodiversity values that has now been revealed, it is unlikely that the

‘extensive set of environmental approvals’ and determinations would have been issued by State and Commonwealth governments. A rigorous assessment would also not have denied the bypass objectors’ request for an independent flora assessment, at no cost to Council, to resolve the legal status of the rainforest at the southern end of the construction footprint. Despite

Coal folly How can Australia, the driest inhabited continent in the world, continue to mine, and burn, water-guzzling coal? Australian coal corporations consume 383 billion litres of water annually, the same amount as that used annually by all Sydneysiders, or every Queensland household. Coal uses 120 times more water than wind or solar to produce the same amount of electricity. Water is vital to sustain life, yet Australian government policy plays Russian roulette with this increasingly scarce resource. Inaction on climate change condemns Australia to a vicious cycle of reduced rainfall and more frequent droughts. If, in the age of the COVID19, we are to spend public money to create a more resilient future for Australia, governments are obligated to choose sustainable energy over coal. Our choice is stark – continue on the same destructive path, or change course and create a better world where people, waterways, the environment and wildlife thrive. Meg Pickup Ballina

Thank you I just wanted to thank Mandy Nolan for her beautiful ‘Mountain Views’ soap box in the 6 May issue.

a further dubious report, Council has still not correctly established the status of this stand. The finding of 163 individual snails during clearing operations demonstrates the significance of the habitat in the bypass footprint for this species. In this context, the stylised diagram comparing the area of impact with the areas of the biobanking offset sites is misleading. A large proportion of the habitat in the Wallum Place and Lilli Pilli sites is marginal habitat for Mitchell’s Rainforest Snails and the Wallum Place site was not used to calculate available biobanking credits to offset the destruction of the habitat in the bypass footprint. Far from being proud of an engineering project that has abused the assessment process, Council should be acknowledging its lack of environmentally responsible governance. The Byron Bay bypass is merely another example I always turn to her weekly column first, and she never fails to nail it. Namaste, merci beaucoup, and aloha to Mandy and all the Echo team. A light in these troubling times. Mel Mott Lennox Head

Car parks I could not agree more with Wally Hueneke’s comments last week about turning the car park into a proper park for all to use. How wonderful it is to be able to walk along here, enjoy the magnificent vista, and not to have to dodge van doors that lift up at just the right height to crack your skull open, or van campers setting up chairs and completely blocking the narrow path. If the majority can’t be closed, at least block off the parking bays facing the sea, creating a wider, safer walkway. Steve Harris Byron Bay

Star beings Given the age of the universe in comparison to Earth, it will be a sad and despairing day for humanity when we discover how utterly primitive we are compared to star beings. We can only hope that they have the compassion to hide themselves from us forever. Sapoty Brook Mullumbimby

of the failure of Australia’s nature laws. No amount of spin and glossy ads can disguise the fact that Byron Council has destroyed a stand of an endangered, and overcleared, vegetation community and significant habitat for a critically endangered species – listed as not able to withstand further loss. This is a species that has the core of its world distribution centred on the Cumbebin wetlands. The Conservation Ecologists Association (CEA) has been formed by a group of professional biologists and ecologists with extensive experience in the conservation and management of the North Coast’s native flora and fauna. One of the main aims of CEA is to promote and foster the conservation of the natural environment for its evolutionary, ecological, scientific and intrinsic values. Peace not war The tensions we see between the USA and Iran have been brewing since Trump unilaterally pulled out of the nuclear deal with Iran. They were ratcheted up another notch when Trump threatened to blow Iranian vessels out of the water. Iran threatened to attack US assets and US allies in the Middle East, including nuclear-armed Israel. The consequences of a war between the US and Iran are too horrible to contemplate. Meanwhile, the trade war between the US and China has escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic, and includes war ships of both countries challenging each other in the South China Sea – both sides are pumping up the rhetoric. The US ‘defence’ budget is in excess of $730 billion. China’s is more than $260 billion. Let’s hope things don’t get out-of-hand and develop into a shooting match. The US spends more on defence than the next four countries combined. These are huge sums of money; while the majority of people in developing countries live on $2 per day. We have never needed a strong peace movement more than at present. Frank Ball Tweed Heads

Do you Wandana another beer? Brian Mollet With pandemic panic engulfing the globe and the smart money hiding out in safe havens, far from the winds of misfortune, you won’t hear too many stories over the next few months about people opening up a new business. Mullumbimby couple, Rupert Brown and his wife Kristine, are busy bucking that trend – launching the Wandana brewery over the weekend in the Mullumbimby industrial estate, near the Leagues club, with little fanfare and all of the protocols in place. ‘Although I grew up in Mullum, I travelled for years, and eventually ended up working as a director, filming ads in Sydney, which is where I met Kris, who was a producer. When online advertising and the decline of free-to-air TV kicked in, and with a young family in tow, we realised we would have to re-place ourselves in the workforce’, says Rupert. With Rupert’s passion for brewing beer as their main inspiration, they dared to dream the dream. Finding the right location was the first hurdle. ‘We had a

Work got underway last year, and although they have raised some working capital from investors amongst their friends, they largely own the company themselves. Then the COVID-19 crisis hit. ‘We were 90 per cent there, and you don’t stop when you’re that far along. Beer

According to a study by the University of Wellington, yeast activates more quickly and thoroughly when exposed to music. Rupert has speakers installed over each of his brewing tanks that amplify sounds into the tanks as they are fermenting. ‘Hops taste very different according to where they are grown. I thought it was appropriate to play music to the brew from the area it was grown in.’ So the beer you

drink from Wandana might have local hops that has been brewed with reggae and blues music played to it, bitter north American hops that have had grunge music played (think Kurt Cobain et al), or a German hops that has spent its short life listening to authentic polka music. ‘I had to turn the polka music down a bit, just for my own sanity’, says Rupert. Future brews will include a pilsner that has been reared on a diet of Bach and Mozart, and a porter that has developed in the sound waves of Irish and Celtic tunes. The brews are available for takeaway sales from the premises, canned or decanted into an insulated stainless steel flask called a ‘growler’. The ‘growler’ holds a six-pack and is perfect for taking to a barbeque, for example, and is a textbook case of a no-waste enterprise solution. ‘Beer is like any other food, it tastes better fresh’, says Rupert. Having tasted the result, I must agree, the big breweries have just lost my custom.

Just a gentle reminder that eagerly adopting conspiracy theories around global depopulation, Bill Gates and Chinese labs fits nicely into the right-wing propaganda agenda. A police strip search which left a 16-year-old girl ‘completely humiliated’ at the 2018 Splendour in the Grass was unlawful, the NSW Police watchdog has found. The ABC reported it was just one of four such cases the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) found unlawful, because no attempt was made to contact a parent, guardian or support person, as

An unattended car drove in reverse across the road from its parking spot in Mullum last Friday. It ended up knocking into the Cactus Hill homewear shop, which damaged the structure.
