Earth Heaven Soul Meet Ryan, a qualiﬁed acupuncturist and Chinese herbal medicine practitioner. An avid meditator, Ryan has spent much of his life travelling and studying Chinese medicine. Minimise the risk of catching colds, ﬂu, COVID-19

Make your environment safer: Avoid the 3Cs: spaces that are closed, crowded or involve close contact. Outbreaks have been reported in restaurants, choir practices, fitness classes, nightclubs, oﬃces and places of worship where people have gathered, often in crowded indoor settings where they talk loudly, shout, breathe heavily or sing. The risks of getting COVID-19 are higher in crowded and inadequately ventilated spaces where infected people spend long periods of time together in close proximity. These environments are where the virus appears to spreads by respiratory droplets or aerosols more eﬃciently, so taking precautions is even more important. Meet people outside. Outdoor gatherings are safer than indoor ones, particularly if indoor spaces are small and without outdoor air coming in. Avoid crowded or indoor settings but if you can’t, then take precautions at the very least open a window to increase the amount of natural ventilation. You may also consider wearing a mask.

Don’t forget the basics of good hygiene Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. This eliminates germs including viruses that may be on your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately into a closed bin and wash your hands. By following good ‘respiratory hygiene’, you protect the people around you from viruses, which cause colds, flu and COVID-19. Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently especially those which are regularly touched, such as door handles, faucets and phone screens.

STELLAR Awards launched to recognise outstanding health workers The Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) has launched a new award program to recognise dedicated nursing and midwifery staff across the health service. The STELLAR Awards, developed by the Nursing and Midwifery Service, encourages members of the public to nominate a staff member or team who has provided exceptional care.

Photo by Jonathan Borba from pexels.com Katharine Duffy, Director Nursing, Midwifery and Aboriginal Health, said the awards were a special way to honour staff for their incredible contributions to their profession. ‘I am very pleased to launch the Northern NSW Local Health District Nursing and Midwifery Service STELLAR Awards’, Ms Duffy said. ‘The awards are a monthly recognition program which recognise individuals or teams of registered and enrolled nurses, registered midwives or assistants in nursing/midwifery who have made an outstanding contribution to the health service and the care of the local community. ‘The STELLARs will add to our existing annual recognition of excellence by providing an opportunity for patients, members of the community and other health care workers to nominate nurses and midwives on a regular basis,’ said Ms Duffy.

How to nominate Patients and visitors can nominate staff using nomination forms available in each health service, or online on the NNSWLHD website. Nominations will be reviewed each month and the winner chosen on merit. They’ll receive a badge and certificate, and go into the running for the annual STELLAR award.
