Joint Work by L&M DESIGN LAB Designers: Mingxi Zou | Jinrui Liu | Ming Yuan | Miao Cheng

In this project, we were assigned to design an art center for the town ‘TongXiang’ named after a famous Chinese artist called ‘Zikai Feng’. The art center will consist of 5 main parts which are art gallery, music hall, meeting center, hotel and a youth center. The art gallery will be mainly used in memory of ‘Zikai Feng’. .

DESIGN CONCEPT

The cousins forgot the lotus flower and only brought the lotus leaves back.

Suddenly the wind came, they started to run with lotus leaves as their hats.

Drawn By Desginers

The rain came, the wind blew away the lotus leaf 'hat'.

In the dream, the lotus leaf is always there, reminding people their their hometown and childhood.

SITE PLAN

LANDSCAPE DESIGN & OTHERS FENGZikai art center faces the city with an extremely open attitude, and its landscape is full of wild interest and interactivity. It is an important urban public activity space on the shoreline of Fenghuang lake.

0F

The natural and wild trail system connects FENGZikai Art Center and landscape land. As a part of urban open space, it is fully integrated with Fenghuang lake green belt park. The base is an important interface between Fenghuang lake and the city, and plays a role in the transition of lake view and city view. The lake water is introduced into the base to make the internal landscape and external landscape fully integrated. Exhibition pavilions are scattered in the landscape area of the art center. The pavilion is inspired by the lotus leaf posture for people to rest, gather and hold outdoor exhibitions.

L&M Design Lab - Shanghai Administrative Service Center

Joint Work by L&M DESIGN LAB Designers: Mingxi Zou | Jinrui Liu | Qiong Feng| Sijun Zhu | Weihui Li | Ming Yuan

The Project

TU/d Dwelling Studio - Individual Work In this project, I work as individual on the same site based on the urban frame we did before as a group. The studio is called ‘dwelling‘ which focuses on providing new residential solutions for uban people. The site here is Roomtuintjes located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In modern society, people are always frustrated and depressed and have little chance to communicate with nature. They need something to power themselves up and to refresh themselves. However, in the Netherlands, the green space always exists as a large urban park which is very far away from the residential complex. In this project I called this space ‘power unit’ which includes different functions that can power up modern people. How to integrate the “power units “into the circulation of the residential complex is my research goal.

Analysis & Concept Nowadays, modern people become frustrated, stressed, and depressed more and more often. People are like mobile phones that needs to be charged. The power unit to modern people living in urban areas are definitely nature with green and water where socializing also happens. I am designing such a circular community where ‘power units‘ are just near you and become people’s daily routines. For building technology part, the theme ‘power unit‘ still holds, the community is circular and powered by rainwater and greenery.

The design question for this project was to develop a vision for how to continue with the site, now that it had made these initial changes. An impulse to the area was required in terms of activity, especially outside of work hours. During analysis it however became very clear that the industrial qualities of the area, on urban as well as building scale, could not be disregarded as they formed an

integral part of its atmosphere and history. The pitched roofs, the out-of-use train tracks, the vast, flat building volumes and the intricate concrete structures; these elements form a link to the area’s past and are therefore supposed to be integrated in the new vision. On the other hand, the design solution would also have to meet contemporary environmental standards, in terms of used, produced and embodied energy.

The Industriepark Kleefse Waard is an industrial area with a rich history, that has come to lie at the outer edge of Arnhem, whereas it used to be far away from the city. This process has changed the area’s attitude towards the city. Being a closed, private site at first, it has changed to a semi-public ground for a variety of shared functions such as restaurants and meeting spaces.

08. Gone with the star Circle of Life - Future Cemetery Competition

Personal Work by Ming Yuan

In the coming decades, where our aging population will complete their life cycle and we will face rising mortality rates - we still do not have enough infrastructure to support this purpose. The infrastructure of the coming decades has to be prepared for a sustainable future. With land being a limited resource now, a strategical and sensitive approach to design a resting place is necessary. How will architecture house this uncharted need of the cities of tomorrow?
