everal times a day, trains chug past a small covered bench in the heart of El Campo – a monument to the New York, Texas and Mexican Railroad rail depot that gave birth to what’s now a bustling small city of more than 11,000. And while iron horses and cattle may have first brought people here, it was the land, “El Campo” in Spanish, that made them want to stay. “During all my life, never have I seen anywhere soil that will compare with this in Wharton County,” Charles Faulk of Essex, Iowa was quoted as saying in the Nov. 5, 1892 edition of the Wharton Spectator. At first called Prairie Switch, the little community soon earned the moniker “The Pearl Of The Prairie” based on the effect caused by the depot light shining across the flat land each night. It’s a slogan still proudly used despite the well-lit ribbons of highway connecting the city to points north, south, east and west. As settlers first came, Northern promoters brought many of Swedish descent here from Illinois, Iowa and the Dakotas. Soon, they were joined by a strong Czech, Bohemian or Moravian community who brought with them kolaches, accordions and the language still captured on the occasional “Jak Se Mas” bumper sticker – but the name El Campo stuck. By 1895, reports indicated about 200 people living in what’s now the corporate city limits of El Campo. The first gin - owned by P.J. Isaacson - opened in 1896. By 1900, the not-yet town had 860 residents, according to the El Campo News. The farmers among them produced cotton, corn and planted the first rice in the region with El Campo and Louise touted as having the best land for growing the new crop. About that time, El Campo was the second largest hay-shipping center in the nation. The town incorporated in 1905 and, by 1910, about 2,000 people lived here. A decade or so later, a young El Campo man became a baseball standout, but because of the times, few learned of his accomplishments.

Known for his excellent control with a moving fastball as well as his ability to throw virtually any pitch, Willie Bell, then age 27, threw in three games of the inaugural 1924 Colored World Series, winning his only championship and compiling a 2.63 ERA. His team also made it to the 1925 Negro League World Series where Bell boasted a 1.13 ERA in three games. From 1923 to 1936, Bell won 141 games and lost only 57, the fifth best in the League’s history. A city park on Second Street honors the young man known for pinpoint control on the mound and organizing dirt lot games for kids in the town he called home until his death in 1969. During the summer of 1935, the Texas Co. (Texaco) drilled a discovery oil well on 12,000 acres leased on the Pierce Ranch by the Armour family, launching that industry in Wharton County. Over the decades, that business would grow and expand to include a wide range of auxiliary industries. By 1940, the census listed 3,908 people in the city limits. That grew to 5,500 in 1943. Around that time, the city offered seven hotels and a 50room hospital along with three newspapers, three movie theaters and 14 industrial plants. Annual oil production within 15 miles of the city was estimated at three million barrels a year. In 1948, the Isaacson-Carrico Manufacturing Co. was established to sell a double-seat girl’s panty. Today, New ICM – the reorganized version of that business – still operates in El Campo making children’s sleepwear, underwear and industrial protective coveralls. By 1952, a willing farmer with $14,000 could buy 40 acres of sandy land, a one and a half story home with a barn or shop, double car garage and a cow barn just five miles south of El Campo. By 1970 the town’s population had grown to 11,212, according to census reports, and, at 11,807, it’s not much bigger now. In 1981, El Campo made national news when President Ronald Reagan presented the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, to Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez for actions during the Vietnam war rescuing men and classified documents under withering fire. Born in Cuero, Benavidez considered El Campo his home. After his Army retirement in 1976, Benavidez returned to El Campo, but traveled the nation sharing his story with troops and students until his death in 1998. His widow, children and their families still live in the city. The national guard armory just south of the city honors the former Green Beret. Ag and oil-related industries still provide the backbone of the city’s economy and the town continues to have a thriving retail section with efforts currently under way to encourage expansion. A cabinet manufacturer employs in excess of 100 workers. A family business raises crawfish and serves them by the pound in their restaurant. A machine shop now sells custom truck bumpers and quality saw mill products while just a few miles down the road a butcher shop/convenience store has transformed into a worldwide distributor of sausage and other meats. And through it all, the “happy sound” of Polka bands still play. –By SHANNON CRABTREE

exas yields many varieties of hunting and fishing opportunities – and West Wharton County is no different. No matter what is your game of choice – be it doves, ducks, geese, fishing, Sandhill Cranes or turkey – all those and more can be found here. From early September through late December, the area produces arguably the best waterfowl hunting in the state,
according to local Texas Game Warden Chris Bird. Area waterfowl hunting is a hot spot due to the Central Flyway, which is one of four flyways in the country. The majority of migrating waterfowl travel along broad airways within these flyways changing their flight direction in response to direction and force of the wind. “With El Campo being situated just an hour south of Houston on Hwy. 59
and only two hours from the state capitol of Austin on Hwy. 71, its location is convenient and accessible,” Bird said. “El Campo’s small-town setting is also a welcome comfort for those hunters who are looking to escape from the fast-paced metropolitan lifestyle for the weekend. El Campo offers all of the small-town amenities with great places to eat, relax and enjoy while visiting during the down time between hunts.
“The Matagorda Bay complex is also just 30 minutes south of El Campo if the hunters wish to get the best of both worlds. When they’re done chasing ducks and doves in El Campo, outdoorsmen and women can chase a few fish on the bay.” For many years, waterfowl hunting has been the area’s trademark. “This was once known as the waterfowl capitol of the state in the central flyway,” Bird said. “While the waterfowl populations are not as prominent as they once were in the 1960s, the mass of waterfowl hunters still make the annual migration to the county, relishing the opportunity for an out-of-this-world and fulfilling Texas sunrise hunt for duck and geese.” The popularity of dove hunting may be outpacing the other types of waterfowl, however. Each dove season is ushered in with a cacophony of shotgun blasts when the season begins. “With each passing year, El Campo is becoming known as the place to be on opening weekend of the south zone dove season,” Bird said. “In the past eight years, the white wing dove populations have exploded and expanded, giving the El Campo community an economic booster shot in the month of September. Each year, the
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department biologists band white wing doves to study and better understand their population trends and movements in and out of El Campo, giving hunters the opportunity to participate in a vital part of natural resource conservation by reporting the banded birds when harvested.” There are private hunting opportunities as well, for those looking to spend a little more for the rights to hunt there. With an abundance of rice fields around the area, places like Porter Creek Hunting Club near Louise present a copious amount of options for hunters on approximately 15,000 acres. The Waterfowl Paradise Hunting Club, which covers Garwood, El Campo and Eagle Lake areas, also focuses on various types of waterfowl. The Pintail Hunting Club based out of Garwood, along with Sherrill WS Waterfowl Hunting provides hunters with full accommodations at requests. The Riceland Waterfowl Club in Eagle Lake manages lands of rice, soybean, corn, rye grass and other assorted crops. Wells on the property are six or 12 inches deep to ensure ponds host 10,000’s of geese and ducks alike. Third Coast Outfitters accesses land around Eagle Lake, Garwood, Nada, El Campo, Danevang and others.
With the thriving waterfowl market, the El Campo area is also a destination for white-tailed deer hunting. Blue Creek Adventures strives for excellence as the 8,000-acre ranch boasts a healthy herd of deer, wild hogs and migrating waterfowl. The Colorado River flows on the east side of the property while Blue Creek marks through the center of the ranch. Hunter safety is key regardless of what game you choose to pursue, Bird pointed out. “Before making the trip to El Campo, be sure to do your homework first,” he said. “If you are a newcomer to the hunting community, be sure to take the state-required hunter education course if you were born on or after Sept. 2 1971. If you are 17 years of age or older, you can now take the course online at your convenience or if you have children under the age of 17 and 9 years of age or older, you can sign them up to take a one day course by visiting the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Hunter Education webpage on the Internet.” Bird knows what he’s talking about. In addition to years of professional training in his field, he is also an avid outdoorsman, having spent his life enjoying hunting and fishing activities. Bird said one hunt in particular
without ever employing a duck call to his lips. All but one of the birds fell to the water as the retriever went to work earning his keep, happily gathering birds. The group reset and patiently waited for the next cascade of ducks. This continued through the morning hunt until each hunter attained their daily bag limit.” The date of the epic hunt held a special significance for those involved. “It was in memory of the late Texas Game Warden Justin P. Hurst, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the State of Texas on his birthday, March 17, 2007. Justin’s father, Allen Hurst, was at hand as this was his first waterfowl hunt since his son’s passing. Justin’s presence was felt by everyone during that memorable hunt and we as a community will never forget the once Wharton County Game Warden who called El Campo his home.” El Campo and West Wharton County are full to the brim with outdoor opportunities. Come make your hunting memories here soon. –By JAY T. STRASNER and CHRIS FILOTEO

stands out in his memory – when he had the opportunity to share a oncein-a-lifetime duck hunt on the historic Pierce Ranch with some very special friends in 2011. “On this hunt it was by far the coldest day of the year with a north wind drifting from a recent Arctic cold front, the wind chill was easily in the 20s that morning. With each passing minute, the morning glow of a Texas sunrise began to warm and accentuate our hunt with a remarkable light show just as the birds began to stir. “I could slowly begin to see the decoys swaying with the waves and the ice that had formed on the fur coat of the lab from the early morning excitement of setting out the spread. As I took a deep breath of the frigid air, I felt more alive with each inhale and exhale. By now, everyone’s face had become numb and our guide’s retriever was anxiously waiting for the first volley of shots. “In the distance you could hear ducks conversing amongst each other and their wings began tearing through the frosty morning air shortly after. As the birds came into range, they decoyed flawlessly and our guide called the shot

While the origin of his nickname often spurs debate, there can be no argument over A.H. “Shanghai” Pierce’s impact on Texas history and the cattle industry.

Shanghai
A
nd at least two towns near El Campo – Blessing and Pierce – owe their founding to the Pierce family. Pierce Ranch was founded in the early 1800s by “Shanghai” Pierce, one of the most colorful cattlemen in early Texas history. Abel Head Pierce was born June 29, 1834, in Rhode Island. Pierce was a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, with nine generations in between. He was related to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as well as a president of the United States, Franklin Pierce. Thomas Wentworth Pierce, builder of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Texas, was also a relative of Mr. Pierce. As a teenager, “Shanghai” stowed away on a ship in the New York harbor. He worked for his passage and arrived in Indianola, Texas, five months later without money or a job. According to the book “Legendary Texians” by local historical author Joe Tom Davis, it is while on the ship that Pierce earned his colorful nickname, after sailors said the lanky 6-5 teen resembled a “Shanghai” rooster. Others claim Pierce earned the moniker later in life by swindling locals out of chunks of land or herds of cattle. Once in Texas, Pierce went to work for W.B. Grimes as a ranch hand. By shrewdness, hard work and rugged determination, he became an authority on cattle while working for Grimes. Grimes also served as a motivator for Pierce’s success, as the “mentor” cheated Pierce out of previously agreed upon payments and deals on more than a few occasions. After serving in the Confederate Army, Pierce returned to Texas and formed a partnership with his brother, Jonathan. They established the famous Rancho Grande on the Tres Palacios near Blessing. He also married Fannie Lacy, daughter of William Demetris Lacy, who was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and second judge of the Municipality of Colorado. They had two children; a daughter, Mary Frances, and a son who died at the age of four months. Fannie died shortly after the death of their son and Mr. Pierce sold out in 1871 and moved to Kansas City. He lived there about 18 months. He returned to Texas and started buying up land in Wharton and Matagorda counties to build the ranch that at one time would consist of one half million acres. He formed the Pierce-Sullivan Pasture Company and sent thousands of cattle to the markets in the north.

der quarantine because of a disease called Surra. An appeal was made to President Theodore Roosevelt, who intervened, and the remaining 33 head were finally unloaded at Pierce Ranch in November of 1906. Tom O’Conner of Victoria took 16 head, Pierce Ranch kept 16 head and one bull went to A.P. Borden. Eventually, the offspring of these breeds flourished in the Gulf Coast climate, and they remain a vital part of the Pierce Ranch herd today. The town of Pierce did not develop as “Shanghai” hoped it would. The magnificent hotel saw few, if any, overnight guests. It was rented out to tenants for long terms and housed the office of Pierce Estate Oil & Gas from 1952 until 1980. It also served as residence and office for J.B. Ferguson as he organized the Superior Drilling Company, one of Wharton County’s early drilling operations. Over the years the building gradually deteriorated and was demolished in 1980. The New England styled widow’s walk and some of the railings have been restored on the original site and other railings and parts of the trim are on exhibit in the Wharton County Museum. The Pierce Ranch is still in operation under the management and ownership of the descendants of A.H. Pierce. It consists of approximately 32,000 acres of pasture land, rice and row crops. The original ranch house is still maintained and is marked by a state medallion. In the front yard is a monument erected by the state of Texas in 1932 to honor “Shanghai” Pierce for his contribution to early Texas history. The Pierce family maintains an influence on the area with the Blessing Hotel in Blessing, south of El Campo, and the Pierce Ranch, located a few miles north of El Campo. A tall statue of Shanghai marks his grave at the Hawley Cemetery just north of Blessing. The Blessing Hotel remains a popular breakfast and lunch stop for area citizens, with its old-school, buffet-style offerings sure to please just about every appetite. –By JAY T. STRASNER

The name “Shanghai” Pierce soon became synonymous with cattle in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas, as he spearheaded large cattle drives through these states. Pierce was also known for his elaborate stories. He once underwent a grueling cattle drive through southeast Texas swampland into Louisiana and later bragged that his rugged steers used their horns to swing though the cypress vines to make the trek easier. Pierce eventually selected a site on the Colorado River near Wharton to establish a ranch headquarters. He built a large two-story ranch house, an office, blacksmith shop, barns, silos and several tenant houses. Eventually, the New York, Texas and Mexican Railways established railway lines through Wharton County, providing easy transportation to market for the cattle. Pierce wanted the train to stop at his headquarters, so he built a railroad station himself. It was called Pierce’s Station and also served the area as a post office for many years. Because Pierce’s Station was located near the center of Wharton County, “Shanghai” had hopes of it becoming the county seat. In 1894 he had 160 acres surveyed to become the Pierce townsite. He built and named the streets, laid out a public square, courthouse square, academy square and a cemetery ground. A church was built and a two-story grocery store. He then decided to build a grand hotel, which would accommodate cattle buyers, traveling salesmen, etc. The spectacular structure, with open porches on two sides of both the first and second floors, would be a convenient stopover between Victoria and Houston. It was a three-story, 22-room mansion built in Steamboat Gothic style. The widow’s walk on top provided a panoramic view of the whole countryside. “Shanghai” Pierce tried his hand at other ventures such as banking and railroad ownership, but his real interest was always cattle. He toured Europe to find a breed of cattle resistant to the ticks so prevalent in the Gulf Coast area. He returned, convinced that Brahman cattle were the most likely to be immune. Pierce died on Dec. 26, 1900. In 1906 Abel Pierce Borden, nephew of “Shanghai” and executor of the estate, was sent to India to import the Brahman cattle. A total of 51 head reached the United States and were placed un-
Traveling into the past
It’s not quite time travel, but El Campo visitors can get a glimpse of the city’s past on foot or in their vehicles.
All they have to do is look up at the walls of various buildings.
They are a tourist draw, City Manager Mindi Snyder said, adding the murals also factor into El Campo’s recently-launched downtown revitalization project and could possibly lead to a future cultural arts designation for the city. “When we had the Texas Downtown Association group here a few weeks ago they had very favorable comments about them,” she said. “They were encouraging us to do more with the arts and that is something that we will be exploring.” The downtown program, just in its infancy as of this writing, is envisioned as a combination retail expansion project with rolling series of community and cultural events. “This is a great magnet to attract visitors and share our history,” Muños said. “It is a beautiful way of sharing our history and what helps make our downtown distinctive.” A complete list of the more than 20 murals is available on the El Campo Chamber of Commerce website www.elcampochamber.com and on city maps. Tours can be arranged by contacting the chamber of commerce in advance at 979-543-2713.

Those walls were brought to life by a mid-1990s effort focused on capturing the city’s heritage on a larger-than-life scale. “The murals that we have in El Campo have been a very unique attraction for tourists,” Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca Muños said. “We have visitors coming in specifically asking about the mural tours, spending time getting a glimpse of our city’s past.” Former El Campo Citizen of the Year Ann Leach, a community activist armed with a garden rake, water hose and the battle cry “Bloom Where You’re Planted,” was instrumental in the effort to transform the bland to the beautiful. As author of “Postscripts From Prairie Switch,” the former El Campo Leader-News columnist saw a similar effort in another small town, brought it back home and began the push to make it happen while at the same time hunting for an artist. She found Dayton Wodrich of Brenham and almost immediately put him to work while at the same time coordinating with the chamber and other groups for funding. Wodrich, who creates images with the motto “Preserving History Through Art,” painted most of El Campo’s murals, the reason so many have a consistent style and color choice. His works show a soft touch to their subjects from the grinning boys in a downtown mercantile mural to the rounded, cartooned cotton bolls on a warehouse. Volunteers from the El Campo Art Association have added their brush strokes to buildings as well. Their mural at the northeast corner of East Jackson and North Washington streets captures the “Pearl of the Prairie” legend residents still recite today. When El Campo was still just the Prairie Switch rail depot out on the wild flatlands the story goes, cowboys driving cattle ahead would make camp a few miles away as there were no accommodations in the not-quite town. At night, the ever-shining depot light, they said, looked just like “a pearl on the prairie.” And, if you take the time to look at the mural from all angles, you’ll notice the railroad tracks seem to move, offering passage whichever way you care to go. Inside the El Campo Post Office, you’ll find the city’s most historic mural. Painted in 1938, the 58-foot by 135foot oil painting was restored by the Texas Regional Art Conservation Center of Houston in 1984. It is one of more than 1,000 Post Office murals commissioned by the federal government between 1934 and 1944. Of the 61 within Texas, 50 still exist, including Milford Zornes’ El Campo work on the south wall of the lobby. Although none have been painted in recent years, El Campo’s murals are anything but aging images.
P
ut on your best pair of boots and get ready to dance the night away in El Campo, where several venues offer a wide variety of music and atmospheres. Perhaps the most popular music genre around is country, whether traditional or modern, and music lovers can enjoy it nearly every weekend – after all, it’s Texas y’all. However, we’re a diverse community, also serving up rock ‘n roll, polka, R&B, Hip Hop, Conjuncto Tejano and other Latin music on a regular basis. National recording artists such as George Strait, Willie Nelson, Clint Black and Bryan White have graced the stages of our fair city with Doug Stone performing at Prairie Days just last year. Beyond famous artists, there are several local bands that keep everyone entertained with cover tunes as well as original music. “You can catch a rising Nashville and/or Texas artist or a homegrown band playing on the same stage doing cover songs to original songs,” local artist Mark Biskup said. “The fans are awesome. Always ready to throw a party for any reason under the sun.” Home-grown bands have seen their share of success over the years. The band Vallejo was formed by a group of brothers originally from El Campo and Haydn Vitera, formerly of Asleep At The Wheel is also a native. Today, local bands like Biskup’s Lone Star Drifters are making their mark in the music world, playing locally as well as appearing on the Great Day Houston show and singing the national
anthem at NRG Stadium. Although they have traveled around a bit, it’s still nice to play in El Campo, Biskup said, as it makes for a short drive home at four in the morning with the added benefit of being able to hang out with family and friends. If you enjoy Nashville country, Texas country, southern rock and original music, check out the bands performing regularly at Greek Bros. Oyster Bar & Grill. Speaking of Greek Bros., this is a place you definitely want to check out – whether for the music or food. Diners will find menu items ranging from burgers to freshly prepared seafood – something to tantalize the taste buds of every food connoisseur. And as for entertainment, they book local talent as well as pull in some big names. “Greek Brothers has always been great at booking great national headliner bands of diverse genres as well as very talented local and regional acts,” Steel Country band member Jeff Ranier said. “That is very impressive for a town the size of El Campo. You usually only find that in larger cities.” Steel Country has performed with stars such as John Conley, Mark Chestnut, The Bellamy Brothers, as well as Pat Green and Lorrie Morgan. Across town on the West Loop is another venue promising to keep you dancing ... and skating. Silverwings Skating & Pub, originally opened as Silverwings

Ballroom in the late 1970s, has seen the likes of famous recording acts such as George Strait and Willie Nelson. Over the years, management has changed and today, it provides entertainment for both adults and kids. “It’s two different venues under one roof,” Silverwings Skating & Pub Owner Dixie Guyer said. Offering a casual atmosphere with lounge areas where patrons can sit on sofas or belly up to the bar, you can find just about every type of person and hear a variety of music at the Pub. “We specialize in dance music,” Guyer said. “We want people on the dance floor.” Several facilities improvements have been made since Guyer took over in 2003, including expanding the pub two years ago. “We have the largest bar in town,” Guyer said, adding the building is now 5,000 square feet including both the skating area and pub. Sports fans of collegiate and professional teams can call the Pub home as the bar boasts five big screen televisions playing local favorites as well as national teams. Other entertainment includes six pool tables, dart boards and an electronic jukebox on which patrons can directly download music from their smart device. More improvements are planned within the next six months, the owner said, including adding a covered entrance to the Pub and an outdoor patio. For those with children, the other side of the building features a full skating rink. “I’ve talked with people who grew up here and have such fond memories of skating here,” Guyer said. “It was an integral part of the entertainment in El Campo.” That historic tradition remains at Silverwings with the mirrored ball, black-out skate and skating games such as limbo, train, tag and races. A snack bar offers everything from hot dogs to nachos, frito pies and chicken wings. But the most popular item is their “famous” Silverwings pizza, which is homemade. “We throw a great birthday party,” Guyer said. “We’re very kid-oriented. We have lots of arcade games and the kids love the light-up toys.” So whether you’re in the mood for dining, dancing or skating, we’ve got you covered. –By JODY LARIMER

WELCOME TO EL CAMPO...“CARNIVORE HEAVEN”
T
–By SHANNON CRABTREE
EX PERIENCE EL CAMPO | The Pearl of the Prairie
that brings to mind the roadside stands of those highway trips your grandparents told you about. There’s decades of darn-good eating coming off the pecan-fired pits at Mikeska’s, good enough that in 1986, Texas Monthly declared them to be “The First Family Of Texas Barbecue.” Country Pride is known for a tangier sauce and more marbled meat while the BBQ Place offers memories with every meal. Outside the city limits on U.S. 59 to the west, you’ll find Prasek’s Hillje Smokehouse just before the FM 441 exit and Mustang Creek Bar-B-Q right outside Louise. Garden And Gun, a magazine dedicated to covering the very best the Deep South has to offer, listed Mustang Creek’s Bohemian Special as one of the 21 best barbecue sandwiches you could find below the Mason/Dixon line in its March 2014 edition. “Wedges of smoked sausage are piled atop fatty flaps of sliced brisket, served on a soft white hamburger bun and offset by the snap of raw onions and crimpled dill pickles,” the magazine proclaims. “Carnivore heaven!!,” Corinne C. of Houston declared in a Yelp review of Prasek’s Hillje Smokehouse. Not quite a true barbecue joint, Prasek’s is equal parts roadside shopping center, bakery, meat market and national sausage distributor all rolled into one. And don’t forget to pick up a bag of turkey jerky while you’re there. Houston bound on U.S. 59, Jr.’s Texas Smokehouse is worth visiting for the chicken salad just as much as the tasty brisket and beans. Haley E. of Garden Grove, Calif., recommended Jr.’s in a review she more or less screamed rather than posted on Yelp in regard to the sausage there. “OH MY GOD. I died. No seriously,” she said. “The flavors are so unbelievably amazing! LOOOOVVVVEEE I can’t stop talking about it and thinking about it and I am legit looking up how far the drive is from Anaheim, Calif., to Wharton, Texas. I need more!!!!!” All are worth a visit, El Campo City Manager Mindi Snyder assured. “They all draw crowds to our area,” she said. Muños agrees. “When out of town, I frequently hear people associate El Campo with our famous barbecue establishments and, of course, they all know we are the Ricebirds,” she said.

here’s something about barbeque that feels like coming home. It’s just not one of those meals you expect to find in a restaurant with white linen napkins and fine china – nope, a paper plate will do ya’ just fine. Oh, and napkins aplenty please, if you intend on trying the ribs. After that it comes down to personal preferences – some folks like a sauce with a bit of a tang, while, for others, it’s that basted sweet bourbon and brown sugar brew that makes all the difference. Seems like every town in Texas has a barbecue joint or three, so what makes El Campo’s and West Wharton County’s unique? “In El Campo, the barbecue business is a family business. Our establishments take pride in their business, care about their customers and support the local community,” El Campo Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca Muños said. “Not only are we fortunate to have an excellent choice of various barbecue and traditional sides, but baked goods such as kolaches, breads, pies and canned goods such as salsa, jellies, pickled anything … are a staple. “You will not go hungry here!” In years past, El Campo has, by the way, declared itself to be the barbecue capital of Texas, or even the world, depending on who’s telling the story. In the city proper, there’s Mikeska’s Bar-B-Q with two locations – one on U.S. 59 at North Blue Creek Road and the other downtown on Merchant at East Jackson; Country Pride Meat Market & Bar-B-Q on the West Loop; and a little wooden and corrugated tin shed simply called The BBQ Place on North Mechanic

Little ones can find lots to do in El Campo
W
hether kids are out for summer break or back to school, there are plenty of places to visit, play and do some hands-on activities right here in El Campo any time of the year.
For nine-year-old Rylee Zapata, daughter of Melissa Rangel
and a fourth grader at Northside Elementary, the library is one of
her favorites spots, especially during the summer when the reading program is in full swing. “I love to go visit the library because I get to play games on the computer,” Zapata said. “The games are very helpful and improve my skills.” She likes reading fiction, humorous books and books about animals. “I love to read because I really enjoy it,” she said. “It improves my speech and helps me relax.” As a mother of three, Dory Labay says her children are frequent visitors at the El Campo Museum of Natural History. What they love most about the museum is seeing their friends and the director of the museum, Cheri McGuirk. “It’s just a great place to go when we are needing to get out of the house,” she said. “The museum always has something going on. It’s a place for my kids to meet up with other children and learn about animals or have creative play time in the Children’s Learning Center.” One of their favorite activities, which taps into their creative side, is a painting class uniquely designed for children. “Petite Picasso is currently the best thing going at the museum,” Labay said. “My children have started a collection of art work to decorate their rooms with. It’s great and it adds a boost of self esteem to their personalities.” Her brood of three, Olivia, Camron and Cooper, also like feeding the pets at the museum. “Roxy the iguana and Penny the hedgehog are a few of their favorites,” she said. In addition to the museum and library, there are many other venues where children can exercise their minds and bodies to have fun. –By QUALA MATOCHA

Spending The Day
Out On The Town... “When the working day is done, Girls - they want to have fun, Oh girls just want to have fun, They want to have fun.”
These lyrics, released in a single by Cyndi Lauper in 1983, brought about a new era for women. The song became the anthem for female attitude and set fashion trends for that era. Whether it’s the latest fashion trends, entertainment or just an excuse to have fun, women are discovering ways to get together with their friends. Whether from El Campo or visiting the town, girls can find ways to have fun – lunch at a popular eatery, shopping at a local gift or clothing boutique, taking in a movie, getting their nails done or having a glass of wine at a local bar. When the opportunity presents itself, professional photographer and stay-at-home mom Jenna Hooker prefers meeting friends at one of the newest spots in town. “The Wild Hibiscus Wine Bar has a great atmosphere, wine and appetizers,” she said. And when it comes to shopping, her favorite time of the year is the fall and winter months. “I like to shop for gifts generally in the fall when the weather is cooler and do early shopping for Christmas,” she said. “I love shopping at Merle Norman’s, the Gift Spot and the Kitchen Store.”
She could travel to Sugar Land or the Houston area, but prefers shopping in the town she has called home her entire life. “What I love most about small town businesses is the wonderful selection of gifts, great personal service and they are so very helpful at finding exactly what you want,” she said. The same can be said about the local eateries or a night on the town with her husband Harrell or with friends. Staying close to home is important, too, since the couple have four boys (two sets of twins). “On the weekend, I love going out to eat at Los Cucos with my husband,” she said. “We enjoy margaritas, great food and the manager Manual is excellent. We also love to go to Showplace movie theater to catch a great film. It’s close to our home and I have to have the chocolate-covered almonds and my husband the buttered popcorn.” Sharon Kruppa, escrow officer at Coastal Title Company, likes getting together during her lunch hour. She has called El Campo home for 23 years. “I love getting with friends and having lunch when time permits,” she said. “It’s always nice to have that break in the day to get recharged and enjoy each other’s company.” Shopping locally is on her list of favorite things to do, especially during the holidays. “I love Christmas time and the Christmas Mall,” she said. “It’s local and a great place to buy unique gifts. You also get to visit and usually run into someone you haven’t seen in awhile.”
Shopping locally has its perks, too. “You can get a personal touch or opinion on an item when shopping local because the person helping you usually knows you or the person you’re buying an item for,” she said. For fun with family, Kruppa says the movie theater is the perfect place, or skating. “We are very fortunate to have a movie theater, bowling alley and skating rink, among other places in El Campo. Going to the movies or bowling as a family has always been fun,” she said. “We have had many birthday celebrations at these places.” As a life-long El Campoan, Carrie Slaughter Drapela, enjoys weekends at their “pond, deer camp, home or at a friend’s house.” But when she’s looking for an excuse not to cook, she likes dining at Los Cucos or Casa Hernandez for dinner. Her favorite gift-buying places are The Gift Spot, DNJ Designs, Executive Stitches and Shabby Chic. Jennifer Burns likes meeting friends for food and wine or shopping at any of the resale shops. Debbie Chromcak, who works at First State Bank, also prefers shopping locally. “We love to shop together at The Gift Spot, Shabby Chic, Prairie Rose and Merle Norman’s,” she said. “We can always find something. And for an afternoon getaway we like to watch movies at the Showplace III Cinema and then a glass of wine at the Arbor House. We have lots of fun in El Campo.”

33 decorative climbing stairs for children) and animal-shaped play/ ride equipment. One section includes handicap accessible ramps so that all can join in the fun while another unit features a periscope for children to view the area. A wooden maze, yet to be constructed as of this writing, will have several assorted play stations for children. A pending Phase Two will add an amphitheater with a performance pavilion, small boardwalk, splash pad and fishing pier. A walking trail is included in the overall West Loop Park design, a portion the city hopes future grant dollars will help develop. The development is “a sign that quality of life assets are important to this community and supports that we want to have a great place to live and play and to show others what our community is like,” Snyder said. While the newest recreational offerings are something to see, they are not the only settings for laid-back outdoor entertainment in the city of El Campo. The municipality offers seven other parks for the public’s enjoyment. Friendship Park on North Wharton Street is by far the largest,

celebration of the city’s agricultural roots can be found among places for children to play on El Campo’s west side. Near the intersection of West Jackson and the West Loop, a multi-year, 60-acre development features a small city park with a four-acre pond, high school baseball and softball fields and six Little League tournament fields. As of this writing, sections were set to open in January 2015 with the city of El Campo hoping to see retail establishments locating on West Loop frontage property. “We are nearing (project completion) so hope to see the sites on the perimeter start to be an attraction for retail, maybe fast food or convenience stores and possibly a good restaurant,” El Campo City Manager Mindi Snyder said. The municipal park celebrates El Campo’s agricultural roots and the economic prosperity it has brought to the area. The city’s $1 million Phase One includes a three-quarter basketball court, playgrounds, covered picnic tables, benches, barbecue pits, restrooms, landscaping, a four-acre pond with one or two spray devices and plenty of green space simply to roam. Playscapes feature a bright, shiny red barn motif with assorted areas suitable for toddlers to ‘tweens. Among the offerings are slides, swings, hay bales (actually

covering more than 26 acres. Surrounded by a one-mile lighted walking track, the park features a playground area, daytime-use tennis courts, volleyball courts and soccer fields. Barbecue pits with covered sitting areas are staggered throughout the park and restroom facilities are available near the two covered pavilions. Another play park and half-mile walking trail with fitness stations is available at Rotary Park, located off of East Jackson Street. The 13-acre facility also sports a pavilion, play area, volleyball court, two softball fields and restrooms. Willie Bell Park on West Second Street honors El Campo standout and All-Star Negro League baseball player Willie Bell. Set on the grounds he once rented so colored children would have a place to play baseball, the nine-acre park’s green fields race away from a children’s playground and basketball courts as well as a covered pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms. A plaque near the short walking trail highlights the career of Bell who pitched in the Negro League’s first World Series. Across the roadway is Second Street Park, which also boasts plenty of space for picnics. Evans Park near the railroad tracks off South Mechanic Street
is one of the city’s oldest parks and, at just a half-acre, the smallest. Named after Mrs. J.E. Evans, it pays homage to the woman who asked the city’s permission to beautify the area in the early 1920s. The park features benches, a covered pavilion, decorative water fountain and a replica of the old Prairie Switch depot benches along with a decorative lamp. A stone on the north end of the park commemorates El Campo being named the honorary state capital for a day. Another marks the site where a time capsule was buried during the city’s centennial. Located behind the El Campo Post Office, Alamo Park plays host to the annual Prairie Days Festival the first Saturday in October. The two-acre site has a playground, a covered pavilion and restrooms. A neighborhood park covers 3 1/2 acres on Delta Street in the southwest part of town as part of the El Campo Housing Authority. It includes two uncovered basketball courts and a baseball practice field. –By SHANNON CRABTREE

Sit down on a bench in El Campo’s Evans Park and close your eyes.
Picture, if you will, a hustling, bustling, vibrant downtown.
N
ow imagine shoppers strolling from one shop to the next, a farmer’s market offering locally-grown produce, children playing, people sitting outside enjoying a refreshing beverage or a cup of coffee and kolaches from a cafe, music playing ... doesn’t it sound absolutely charming? Flipping through the pages of A Pictorial History of El Campo, Texas, published by the El Campo Leader-News in 2005 to celebrate the city’s Centennial, it’s not difficult to form such visions. Various shops lined the streets offering pharmaceuticals, dried goods and clothing as well as a place to sit down and wet the whistle. Depending on which decade you’re viewing, they were lined with horse-drawn buggies or cars as well. It was the hub of the city, where residents went for all their needs outside of the home. Much has changed over the decades. Buildings and businesses have come and gone. Many buildings still house tenants while others sit lonely and abandoned. But those glorious memories of what was have unleashed visions of what could be. These visions have spurred the city, Chamber of Commerce and City Development Corporation to form a campaign to revitalize the downtown.
From Switch To City El Campo started in the late 1800s when railroad officials determined they needed two switches added in the line between Rosenberg and Victoria. One was added in Pierce and, in 1882, Prairie Switch Point was founded. Local cowboys nicknamed Prairie Switch Point the “Pearl of
the Prairie” due to the effect of the depot light shining across the flat land. The community was renamed El Campo in 1890. The city was officially chartered on June 19, 1905. By 1892, El Campo had an estimated population of 25, a general store, a mill and gin, and a justice of the peace. Progress continued to bless the town until a devastating fire in 1896 nearly destroyed all the wooden buildings on the north side of the tracks. After a second fire in 1901, the decision was made to use brick for constructing new buildings. By 1921, Monseratte Street was anchored on either side by First National Bank and Commercial State Bank with various shops and the Rice Hotel in between. Continuing to flourish, the city formed the El Campo Volunteer Fire Department in 1908, the first hospital in 1912, and the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Economic Development Corporation in 1927, 1939 and 1959 respectively. Business continued to boom, drawing more residents to the area and in 1930, the town recorded a population of 2,034. That trend continued and, in 1940, the town had a population of 3,908, and 11,212 were residing in El Campo by 1970. Much has changed over the decades and although many of the buildings that defined the city still stand, others remain only in pictures.
Growing Up In El Campo
If you really want to get a feel for what El Campo was like in the early years, it’s best to listen to stories from residents who revel in reminiscing about “the good old days.”
The city is making efforts to ensure that years from now, today’s younger generation will also be able to reminisce about the “good old days” of growing up in a vibrant and colorful El Campo.

Sidewalks, awnings, wide streets, unique merchants, historical buildings and murals help in the effort, but there are challenges to overcome. Together with the Texas Downtown Association, an intense study of the downtown corridor was done to design a master plan to entice more people to the area. Based on that study, TDA recommends developing a nonprofit downtown organization to coordinate the effort by reviewing city ordinances and the Main Street Program status, finding outside funding sources, organizing downtown events, surveying residents and consulting with other TDA member cities. To improve downtown business, they also suggested such things as coordinating regular clean up and maintenance days, posting business hours and honoring them and producing a shopping guide. City officials reviewed recommendations with merchants and citizens as well as the idea to add a new position with the purpose of coordinating these initiatives. The city adopted this proposal on Oct. 1, 2014. “Once that person is on board, then we will move forward with creating a downtown organization and developing a strategy from there, on what the next steps will be,” City Manager Mindi Snyder said. Downtown merchants are supportive and enthusiastic about the revitalization effort and agree more events in the corridor would bring more people through their doors. “We hope that the downtown businesses will take ownership in any projects and programs that transpire, and be an active voice in the downtown efforts,” Snyder said. “We have such an amazing historical charm to promote, and hopefully we will see more downtown events.” –By JODY LARIMER

Several people mention Western Auto, Weiner’s and ordering clothes from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. Viewing pictures and postcards from the past inevitably creates rich and vibrant memories of growing up here. A postcard of Monseratte Street from the 1930s brings everything back for El Campo resident Annie Entrekin. As a disclaimer, however, she said, these are memories of a very young child. “I remember this as a very small child,” Entrekin said. “The adults used to congregate in the street around that middle row of cars on Saturday night and visit. Later, we would go to the Normana Theater for a western movie. It cost a dime to get in.” First National Bank is visible along with Halamicek’s Pharmacy and Butler-Grimes. “The store with the soda fountain was Halamicek’s Pharmacy,” Entrekin said. “Next door was Butler-Grimes which later became Ben Franklin’s. Oshman’s was where the bridal store is now. Down the street, closer to Commercial State Bank, was the Vogue Shop. There was a barber shop in there between Halamicek’s and Oshman’s, I believe, where Butch Medford and Larry Sifford started out barbering.” Times were simple, she said. Not rushed and frantic like today. “I remember the New York Store,” Entrekin said. “My mom bought my shoes from Mr. Ripple. At Christmas, they would wrap your packages for free in their waxy smelling paper and tie it up with cellophane ribbon.” Other stories expanded beyond Monseratte Street, recalling movie theaters, drive-ins and gas stations. “There was a gas station on every corner,” City Inspections Clerk Liz Staff said. “Young’s Food Market was where Auto Zone is now and the HEB parking lot was where Isaacson Cotton Gin was.” Further north on Mechanic Street, she recalled Newton’s, Frnka’s and a bowling alley. Land’s Drive In was a restaurant on West Jackson and “that was the place to be,” City Code Enforcement Officer Stan Ray said. “I remember sitting at Land’s and watching Ricky Collins and two other guys pop a wheely and ride all the way down the block like that.”
Honoring the Past New visitors’ center celebrates El Campo’s history
V
isitors to El Campo have an opportunity to literally step back in time as they visit soon-tobe-opened chamber of commerce offices and visitors’ center in the historic North Mechanic Street fire station. Renovations began in July with a projected finish date of mid-November. If there are no delays, the chamber will move their offices immediately and open the building to visitors. “With this restoration and preservation project, the chamber of commerce will signify El Campo’s charm and pay homage to the city’s past,” Chamber President Rebecca Muños said. “Protecting and promoting our valuable and historic property resources boosts civic pride, economic prosperity and gives residents as well as visitors a visual reminder of our heritage.” As the building was originally built for the brave volunteer firefighters, the chamber plans to honor them. “In absence of a historical museum, the chamber also serves as caretaker for historical El Campo items from our early and founding years,” Muños said. “We will also have a display of El Campo Volunteer Fire Dept. memorabilia from the generations to honor their service and the significance of the building.” Following devastating fires in 1896 and 1901, El Campo established a volunteer fire department in 1908, and in 1926, a new fire station was built at 01 N. Mechanic St. After serving several years as the headquarters for El Campo’s firefighting volunteers, a new station was built in the 1970s, leaving the historical fire house abandoned. Decades later, it transformed into an eatery, bringing life again to the downtown corridor, offering meals cooked from scratch.
Renovation costs later caused the restaurant to close and the building again sat empty until the chamber purchased it from the city in September 2012 for $10,000. “This strategic relocation also provides the catalyst for revitalizing, expanding and promoting downtown,” Muños said. “This project will jump-start our city plan of downtown revitalization and create more opportunities for activities and events.” Following the purchase, the chamber organized Friends of the Firehouse with the purpose of raising funds to renovate and preserve the historical structure. Funds started flowing in with most of them coming from sponsors purchasing naming rights for various rooms, an honorary fire pole as well as flag poles and benches. As the building is two stories, the group decided to break the renovation into two phases. Phase 1 includes exterior repairs and renovating the entire downstairs for chamber offices and a visitors’ information center. “The chamber’s new home will provide many new ways for us to promote tourism and market El Campo.” Muños said. “We will have much more exposure to welcome conferences, hunters, along with other travelers.” Upon completion of Phase 1, focus will turn to Phase 2, which will include additional community meeting space with the installation of an elevator in accordance with ADA regulations. Those renovations are projected for sometime in 2015. “Preserving this historic structure allows us to retain a tangible connection to our history as well as act as an inspiration for future progress,” Muños said. –By JODY LARIMER
