Sixteen homes in El Campo invited neighbors and emergency responders to stop by Tuesday to make their neighborhoods safer and send a message to criminals. Around 300 citizens, both young and old, took part in National Night Out; some for the first time and some who have been participating for years. “I was able to attend 10 of the 16 parties,” Community Service/K-9 Officer Mark Biskup said. “I would say the average would be around 18 attendees.” Adding six more parties than last year, the CSO attributes the turnout to better advertisement. At each event, officers from the police force, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders stopped by to answer questions, give demonstrations and offer tips on how to create a safer neighborhood. Driving into Tina Circle, a group of people were sitting, visiting and eating. Allen and Pat Hurst along with Paul and Mary Soechting were hosting the event. “There are a lot of new people in the
neighborhood,” Pat Hurst said. “It’s a great opportunity to meet them. We all take care of each other.” Tables and chairs were set up with food and drinks available and about 20 people were gathered enjoying the evening. This year’s event featured a special visitor – Beamer. Recently added as the new K-9 member to the police force, Beamer was greeting all the residents along with Biskup. “While I was going around to the different parties, I had people texting me wandering if I was stopping by with Beamer,” Biskup said. “The kids wanted to see Beamer.” Like a rockstar meeting his fans, Beamer was the highlight of the evening. “At one party I pulled up to, the kids swarmed my unit before I even got out,” Biskup said. “He’s probably the first police dog to have so many selfies taken.” NNO is an opportunity for citizens to ask officials questions and there were plenty of questions, mostly revolving around the new K-9 member. “They wanted to know how old he is, how much he cost, etc.,” Biskup said. Hosted by West Wharton County
Crime Stoppers and the El Campo police, the annual event is designed to strengthen communities by encouraging neighborhoods to build stronger relationships with each other, and with their local law enforcement partners. “National Night Out is a communityoriented program,” Biskup said. “It’s a joint effort ... and we can’t thank our hosts enough. Without them taking the time to put together the parties, it wouldn’t have been successful.” Pat Hurst and her husband Allen are not originally from El Campo and are thankful also. “I am so impressed with the turnout and support here,” Pat said. “This is a way to support our law enforcement and show them how much we appreciate them.” National Night Out was introduced in 1984 by National Association of Town Watch. In the first year, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states. It now involves over 37 million in 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.

Business Apollo Global buys Express Energy Creates growth, job opportunities, keeps name By JODY LARIMER reporter@leader-news.com
Express Energy Services announced Friday they are being bought by Apollo Global Management – a move which will allow company growth and job opportunities. El Campo’s office, located at the intersection of Divide and Frank Stubbs in the Meisel Industrial Park, opened in the summer of 2008, offering casing and laydown services. They currently employ about 80 people. “This is great news for our organization and will bring significant benefits to employees and customers,” Express En-
ergy Services Director of Corporate Communications Wendy Hall said. “Apollo Global Management is one of the most successful private equity firms in the world and partnering with them will further develop and grow our business.” With growth comes opportunities for employees, she added. “Apollo will help generate greater profitability and company growth, which of course means more career opportunities for all of our employees.” The purchasing firm plans to increase growth and value at Express by investing money and providing support, Hall said.
The El Campo facility will continue to operate as Express Energy Services. “The transaction should be complete before the end of the fourth quarter,” Hall said. Express, an oilfield services company, was founded in 2000 and has their headquarters in Houston. They have a workforce of about 1,700 employees
in more than 30 locations. With six service lines located across the U.S., Express offers drilling service including casing and tubular running, rathole drilling and drill site rentals. For more information about Express, visit www.eeslp.com.
