Pot-filled candles no match for K-9 sniffer By SHANNON CRABTREE scrabtree@leader-news.com
Marijuana-filled holiday candles were discovered recently in a would-be smuggler’s vehicle during a recent traffic stop. The Rio Grande City driver and lone occupant faces drug charges. The drugs were uncovered after Pierce Station Department of Public Safety Trooper Thomas Arriaga spotted a northbound 2008 GMC Acadia on U.S. 59 South of Hillje around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11. The vehicle “drove in the left lane not passing,” the trooper noted instigating the traffic stop. The driver, 31-year-old Rigoberto Beltran, was identified and questioned. “Upon making contact with Beltran, numerous indicators of criminal activity were observed to include: implausible travel plans, inconsistent statements made about travel plans and ... indicators of extreme nervousness,” Arriaga said. The trooper asked for and received permission to search the vehicle. On the turned down rear seats inside were multiple large pink candles in glass wrapped with shiny ribbon and decorated with butterfly cutouts.

A 31-year-old Rio Grande City man was arrested for allegedly smuggling 32 pounds of marijuana (above) inside the candle wax of the holiday candles at left. The DPS drug-sniffing dog was called to the scene and uncovered the drug-filled candles. Arriaga called for the assistance of a K-9 and its handler to assist in the investigation. The drug-sniffing dog uncovered 14 bundles of marijuana hidden inside the candle wax.
Once the wax was chipped away, the illegal drugs weighed 32 pounds. Beltran was arrested without incident and transported to the Wharton County Jail the
same day. There, he was booked on charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of a criminal instrument. He posted a bond and was released the same day.

Lingering mystery leaves nagging thoughts something’s there A haunting comes to West Wharton County this time of year – captured in the deep brown eyes of a young girl most of us never met, but a few can’t forget. It’s the face of an innocent, but somehow the most publicized photo of her just isn’t quite right. The lack of a smile, perhaps, or the hint of uncertainty. She couldn’t have known what was about to happen – not if the family knew their little girl, their little sister. Despite that fact, the last image shows a 15-year-old girl already uncomfortable, uncertain, unhappy. The Polaroid was found perched on the desk in the back of Danevang’s Dane’s Country Store where she had worked just two weeks before vanishing on Nov. 24, 1990. Found by investigators, it remains a silent declaration that once upon a time there was a girl named Rosemary Diaz – an image apparently taken by chance just hours before she disappeared. Within arm’s reach from it, her purse was found sitting on the floor just inches from a dangling phone cord. I’m not sure how many hours I’ve stared

And please, think about the Diaz family too and their prayer for a homecoming long overdue.
L-N EDITORIAL Kolkhorst best choice for TX The Nov. 4 general elections are over, but voters in Texas Senate District 18 still have an important job to do. Sen. Glenn Hegar’s election to Texas comptroller means his Senate seat must be filled. Early voting begins Wednesday and the election is Dec. 6. That’s little more than a month before the Texas Legislature convenes. Having a new senator in office by then is vital, with major issues such as education, health care, tax reform, water and illegal immigration facing lawmakers. District 18 must be represented by someone with an experienced, steady hand who reflects the will of the voters in this conservative district. The best choice in the five-person field is Lois Kolkhorst, a Republican from Brenham. Kolkhorst has served in the Texas House as District 13 representative since she was elected in 2000. During that time, she’s been highly effective, embracing the term “conservative” and not just paying lip service to those principles. Before being elected to the House, Kolkhorst was an equally effective voice in the private sector, serving as chief executive officer of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Foundation of Brenham for six years. She and her husband Jimmy own a successful oil and gas company that employs hundreds of people. That has helped Kolkhorst hone the skills she’s used so effectively in Austin. Voters should give her a chance to continue that in the Senate. In the House, Kolkhorst has worked tirelessly to fight against big government and federal intrusion. She’s also been highly accessible to her constituents and keeps her ear close to the ground in District 13. She’s led the state’s efforts against Obamacare, worked to tighten border security and strengthen private property rights, and been a staunch pro-life supporter. Kolkhorst has served on a number of important House committees and risen through the ranks to currently serve as chair of the House Public Health Committee. The Senate will allow Kolkhorst to have a larger influence in representing our large 21-county district. Along with Hegar and Gov.-elect Greg Abbott, The Leader-News urges voters to give Lois Kolkhorst that chance either in early voting or on Dec. 6.
Child rearing requires responsibility – not for everyone I spent the better part of my life as a confirmed bachelor. The first half of my life was too fast and complicated for “forever” romance. However, later I did find the girl of my dreams and we have been together ever since. But we never had any children. If I was to be perfectly honest, children scare me a little – the constant responsibility is nearly overwhelming. When I’m shopping in the local “big store” and I see haggard mothers dragging two children behind them with two more in the shopping basket, followed by a lagging, weary-eyed father, I find I don’t regret my choice at all. Now, before you begin to condemn me as an old curmudgeon, let me say I’m certain children are the essence of life for many, and they provide a bond and a shelter in your later days that you can’t buy. It’s like an elderly life insurance policy that
people pay into for the better part of their existence – hoping to get the benefit ICHAEL of sanctuary and comfort in their later years. EISIG I have had some wonderful pets in my life and I suppose I have transferred the affection and love I would have carried for children to them, and I sometimes think, smugly, with a small smile, that I got the better end of the deal. I never have to worry about my dog going off to war. If my cat stays out all night I generally don’t call the police. Neither of my cats have any desire to go to college. If my dog gets the neighbor’s dog pregnant, it’s not exactly an “end-of-the-world” situation.

If I want to send my dog to school (obedience or other), it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg, and my cats have never asked for an allowance. When my dog and I have an argument over a chewed up shoe or an indiscretion regarding toiletry habits, he doesn’t threaten to run away. Don’t misunderstand me. It’s not that I think having children is a bad proposition. I think it’s a wonderful thing and it provides understanding and lessons we can probably only learn by being a parent and nurturing another creature like ourselves. I just feel it’s like everything else with humans – “If it feels good, let’s do it again, and again, and again…” until we realize we’ve worn the gloss off the whole
affair. Making a decision to have a child should be a momentous thing. It should be brought about via responsibility, not entertainment – you are deciding to have your heart walking around outside your body. However, I will concede that in this everchallenging world, having a child continues to be the most beautifully irrational act two people in love can commit. Five vie for Senate District 18 seat Early voting starts today – Election Day Dec. 6 trafficking and the drug trade that fuels illegal immigration in the first place. “Texas must also remove or reduce any government programs that are serving as a magnet for people to come here illegally. I wrote one of the toughest bills to address companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants and I’ll continue to find more common-sense solutions in the Texas Senate.” • Gary Gates, 55, is CEO of Gatesco, Inc., a real estate investment company. He ran for state representative (District 28) in 2002 and 2004, losing both times. His bid for the Senate District 18 Republican Primary nomination in GATES 2006 was also unsuccessful. A list of his issues include jobs, abortion, limiting government, border security, gun rights, lower taxes and government overreach. “The biggest issue I see is border security,” Gates said, adding that sending DPS officers to handle the situation is not the solution. “That’s the most expensive way and sending DPS officers is taking them out of their communities.” A better solution, he said, would be to invest the money into the local communities so they can increase their local police force to handle the situation. His second priority is education, he said. “We need to get away from the mindset that every kid is going to go to college,” Gates said. “There are a lot of needs in agriculture, welding, electricians, nurses ... we need to build vocational training.” • Rounding out the Republican candidates is Charles Gregory, 59, from Richmond, vice president of Royal Disposal & Recycle. He formerly served as mayor protem for the city of Simonton and general counsel for the Fort Bend County Republican Party, GREGORY

Early voting begins today to replace Texas comptroller-elect Glenn Hegar in the Senate District 18 post, and five candidates are asking for your vote. Voters can cast their ballots today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 1-2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the El Campo Library, 200 W. Church, or Wharton County Annex D, 315 E. Milam in Wharton. On Election Day, Saturday, Dec. 6, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at four locations: Meadow Lane Resource Center, 2620 Meadow Lane in El Campo; St. Robert’s Catholic Church, 512 Tegner; Wharton Civic Center, 1924 N. Fulton; East Bernard Library, 746 Clubside. Voters can vote at any of the four locations. Three Republicans and two Democrats are on the ballot and following is information about each. Republicans: • Lois Kolkhorst, 50, is a businesswoman from Brenham and has served as the District 13 House representative since 2001. Counties represented include Austin, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lavaca and Washington. Budget and the economy, education, immigration KOLKHORST and border security, abortion, gun rights, property rights and overturning Obamacare top her list of priorities. “One of the biggest challenges for all of Senate District 18 is illegal immigration,” Kolkhorst said. Although illegal immigration is largely a federal issue, there are ways Texans can protect their borders, she said. “I’ve led the charge to fund DPS patrol boats on the Rio Grande, for example,” Kolkhorst said. “Our boats are now better equipped than the Border Patrol. If elected, I will push for even more local tools for law enforcement to stop human
but resigned both posts to pursue the Senate seat. Water shortages, immigration and border security, gun rights, taxation, education and entitlements are issues he would focus on. “Water is a top issue,” Gates said. “There’s no one, two or three priority ... water is right there in the top three. We need a public/private relationship.” That relationship would involve private entities building desalination plants and the state providing land. “The best way to fix the problem we have is to create a water source and a water grid, much like we have an electric grid,” Gregory said. “We could use the river to transport water back upstream.” Democrats: • Cynthia Drabek, 52, is the owner of Data-X Document Shredding and from Richmond. She ran for state representative House District 85 in November, but was defeated by incumbent Phil Stephenson of Wharton. Topping her list of priorities is agriculture, specifically DRABEK water. “I believe water management should be a top priority,” Drabek said. “(It) is necessary for our farmers and we need to ensure clean safe drinking water for our residents.” Education and economy are also on her list. “I believe we need to fully fund our education system for our next generation. Our schools should provide the best learning environment for our children and allow our teachers to teach. A strong school system builds a strong workforce that builds a strong economy.” Drabek is currently the chair of the Richmond Historic Commission, past member of the Richmond YMCA, a member of the Czech Heritage Society-Fort Bend chapter, a member of the KJZT and a member of the PTO at school. • Christian E. Hawkins, 33, is a lawyer from Rosenberg. She was not reachable by presstime.

Danevang store incident still mystery By SHANNON CRABTREE scrabtree@leader-news.com
Whatever happened in that Danevang store happened in less than a half hour, but has remained a mystery for 24 years. And, since then, not a single trace of the 15-yearold store clerk has ever been found. No one has come forward with credible information and a man who may be the key to everything remains unidentified. The facts: Rosemary Diaz – a sister, a daughter and clerk at Dane’s Country Store on Hwy. 71 – vanished Saturday, Nov. 24, 1990. She had been working there as the lone clerk that night after just two weeks on the job. Her disappearance happened just moments after talking to her family on the phone, asking them to come see her. Rosemary wanted to see her older sister Elia’s new baby. She asked them to hurry and mentioned a man was in the store. A few minutes later a Markham couple came into the store. They gathered their items and headed to the cash register. They waited a moment, looked around, realize d there was no clerk and, after no doubt debating it for a bit, decided the situation was spooky enough to call 9-1-1. An estimated 22 minutes after Rosemary hung up her call, the first Wharton County Sheriff’s Department patrol unit is dispatched. Somewhere in between those two calls, Rosemary Diaz vanished. In the store, authorities notice a slightly moved soda fountain and one small plastic
bile were in the Danevang area between 4:30 and 5 p.m. looking for the Diaz residence the same day Rosemary disappeared. The car never arrived at the house and the three people - two women ages 40 to 50 and a man about 20 - have never been identified. They may have been connected or it may have been a coincidence.
Still Missing
Rosemary Diaz was 15 years old when she vanished (at left) without a trace. If alive today, the photo at right shows what she may look like.

The television was running. Her car was parked outside. There was about $800 in the cash register. Nothing was missing – beer, cigarettes, everything accounted for by the owner. At 8:09 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 1990, Rosemary Diaz officially became a missing person. Speculation:
The man Rosemary Diaz mentions in her phone call has never been identified –
he could be a witness or the cause of her disappearance. Or perhaps, when he left everything was normal. Until he steps forward, or someone says they know who he is, it will remain a mystery. A Danevang man captured Rosemary’s image in a Polaroid picture just hours before she disappeared – it was found propped up on a back desk in the store. Rosemary didn’t smile for the camera, but the man was cleared by the Wharton County sheriff’s investigators. Then they learned about the car. Rosemary, an honors student at El Campo High School, is the third of five children in the Diaz family. Despite marriages, all three of her sisters have kept the Diaz name – to keep the connection with their lost sister. Pedro Diaz, her father, died November 1997 without ever knowing his daughter’s fate. Her older sisters, Elia and Irma, have the most vivid memories of their missing sister. Her younger siblings have to struggle. Gloria Diaz was 11 when her sister vanished. Rosemary’s little brother was only three. If Rosemary is alive, she would be 39 now. Maria Elena Diaz, Rosemary’s mother, remains convinced that her daughter will one day come home, the family says. The family’s faith that one day Rosemary will come home is the reason the Leader-News prints this article. Information Sought:
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the authorities. The Wharton County Sheriff’s Department can be reached at 543-1373 or 532-1550. Crime Stoppers can be called at 543-8477 or 543TIPS. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children can be called at 1-800843-5678.

Clayton Harp was moved up to varsity in the playoffs in 2012 as a sophomore, and was able to partake in the road to state. “It was really neat,” Harp said. “We are doing good this year and hopefully we can keep going.” Cesar Rivera took over the kicker position after state-recognized Alex Montes graduated in 2013. “I didn’t get to play a lot before this year,” Rivera said. “It’s an honor to play.”
Although the Birds have been toughing it out in the rain and the cold, Rivera has a few more challenges to face – such as the unseasonably cold temperatures in recent games. “When it’s cold, it makes the ball feel like a rock when you kick it,” Rivera laughed. Senior receiver Bylan Crivellari has had a busy senior season, filling in for various positions when needed. “It’s been good transitioning to positions and stepping in to do a job,” Crivellari said. “They’re all different. I’m just doing the best I can.” His teammates agreed. “He really came through against Stafford,” Harp said. Although everyone around town is buzzing about the playoffs, and who could be next, the players and coaches don’t look beyond Friday night. “We don’t take anyone lightly,” Crivellari said. “You gotta get there first, before you can look at what’s next.”

Troop donations taken until Friday Collections down – food items still needed
PANDORA HOLIDAY GIFT SETS* AVAILABLE STARTING NOVEMBER 1
By JODY LARIMER reporter@leader-news.com
Friday marks the deadline to donate items to be shipped to overseas troops in time for Christmas. So far, donations are slightly lower this year for the annual Operation GI Joe/ GI Jane project. “As of now, I have 11 names,” Prosperity Bank Assistant Vice President/Loan Officer Connie Schertz said, adding last year she had 17 and 12 or 13 the year before. Names of those overseas have come in via email, the postal system and Facebook, she added. Fifteen boxes were shipped for Thanksgiving and 44 more boxes are ready to go, but more items are needed, Schertz said. “Last year, we averaged eight boxes per person,” Schertz said. “They typically share with their unit. I’m looking to get out at least six boxes per person this year.” For those still planning to donate, food items are still needed, Schertz said Monday. “Snack-size or individualsize items. Fruits and vegetables ... cans with the pull tops. I don’t know if they’ve got can openers over there.” Local schools are again contributing items as well as sorting and packing the goods. Schertz attributes the decrease in donations to getting a later start on the project as well as some changes in an-

This year, St. Philip Catholic School for example, chose to help another charity organization, so contributions to the GI Joe campaign were cut in half, she said. New contributors to the campaign this year include the Galveston ISD, Boys & Girls Club of El Campo and the Vietnam Veterans Association.
“They’ve all helped with sorting and packing boxes,” Schertz said. Also new, the project is now classified as a 501C nonprofit entity, so all donations are tax-deductible, Schertz said. Although the majority of the donations are shipped in December for Christmas, Schertz said they also ship mid-year around Memorial Day and make a small ship-
ment at Thanksgiving. Those who wish to donate or add a name to the list should contact Schertz by Friday at 541-4207 or connie.schertz@ prosperitybankusa.com. Donations can be dropped at Prosperity Bank, 1301 N Mechanic. Operation GI Joe/GI Jane is now in its sixth year of putting together care packages for overseas troops.

—Citizen complaints prompt 8-liner raid (Continued from Page 1-A)
placed under arrest on an outstanding warrant for theft by check not related to the raid. While officers checked the building and started the process of evidence collection, Chau To-Hoang Nguyen, 35, of 7506 Summer Shore Road in Rosenberg sat at the lone desk. The apparent owner/operator, she was arrested on a felony charge of money laundering more than $1,500 as well as a misdemeanor for keeping a gambling place. She was booked into the Wharton County Jail Friday, Nov. 21. Once there, she posted $12,000 in bonds and was released the next day. All 24 of the 8-liners in The Game Room were seized by police along with other unidentified items believed to be connected with the gambling operation. Looking like a slot machine, debate lingers on whether an 8-liner is a game of chance or skill because users typically have a button that allows the player to stop the electronically spinning wheels. Regardless, they are only legal in Texas when possible prizes have a value of $5 or less. The Game Room had only been in operation about three months when raided by El Campo police following an investigation led by Sgt. Justin Soza. “It wasn’t long after they opened that we started get-
ting complaints,” El Campo Police Chief Terry Stanphill said. That raid, Lt. Urban said, produced information which led to the raid of a Wharton game room later Friday night. There, 25 of the 8-liners were seized from the business also owned by Nguyen. The lone gamer at Quick N Easy No. 4 was identified and then allowed to leave. No arrests have been made based on the raid at this location, but all five of the 8-liners were seized along with other equipment. The amount of cash seized at the location was not released as of presstime. Both investigations started with citizen complaints, Urban said, adding the public is encouraged to report illegal gaming operations anytime they learn of one. The ECPD, which can be reached at 541-5311, can act only on those within the city limits. The Wharton County Sheriff’s Department, available at 543-1373, would handle any locations in rural areas. “We definitely don’t want them in El Campo,” Urban said, adding “We warned both locations. We tried to convince them (not to operate).” Citizen complaints regarding illegal game rooms include concerns over family members who have lost large amounts of money as well as individuals who say they cannot curb their own impulses,
the chief said. Illegal operations, he added, put legitimate businesses and the general public at risk because of the crime they may draw. The Wharton Police Department and Wharton County Sheriff’s Office assisted
with local raids. In turn, El Campo officers provided assistance in Wharton. The Wharton County District Attorney’s Office also provided assistance. Efforts will be made to force both businesses to forfeit items seized Friday.

Class 4A, 2A football playoffs
JAY T.
STRASNER INK BY THE BARREL
The night the lights go out in Navasota? It was about 7:15 p.m. Monday when Bob Gillis finally switched off the lights to his office at the Ricebird field house and headed home for supper. But his brain would remain switched on for the rest of the evening – thinking about the biggest test of the year Friday night against Navasota – the No. 1 team in Class 4A Division II. While most fans view Ricebird football as entertainment, behind the scenes a tight-knit group of El Campo coaches put in long hours to prepare their team. It’s fun, but it’s also a responsibility. “Really it goes back to the summer with our strength and conditioning in July,” EC Head Coach Bob Gillis said. “Our coaches are up here four days a week when they would normally be off and they’re working without getting any extra pay. That’s what it takes to have a successful football team. If we didn’t do that, we’d feel like we were cheating our kids. We want to give them every opportunity to be part of a special team that does big things.” When the season begins, Friday is not the only day of activity. Coaching suddenly becomes a 7-day a week job at El Campo. Ricebird coaches get back from games early Saturday morning, catch a few winks, then return to the field house and work for the majority of Saturday viewing film. After church on Sunday, it’s more intense gameplanning all day long, then the practice routine and additional film study returns Monday morning. “Our coaches work really hard,” Gillis said. “I know they get tired, but they never show it. I think working with these young kids kinda keeps you young at heart, ya know.” One strength of the Ricebird coaching staff is its continuity. The majority of the EC coaches have been together for the past seven years. Others have been here even longer. Middle school coaches Jesse Galvan and Matthew Schoener have been installing the El Campo running attack since 1992. “It’s hard to keep coaches together that long. Not a lot of schools have the luxury of that continuity that we have,” Gillis said. Another luxury the El Campo football program has enjoyed is the benefit of playing football after Thanksgiving. It’s a treat that shouldn’t be taken for granted, Gillis said. “That’s a big goal that we have every year,” Gillis said. “When I coached at Columbus, we won a lot of games but never played past Thanksgiving. My first stint at El Campo, we didn’t do it. But when I got back into it after 2003, we’ve been able to play that long a few times. When you look up and there’s only 16 teams left in your division, that’s really big to make it that far. There are no guarantees in football and we’re grateful to be where we’re at right now with everything in front of us.” Carthage learned firsthand last week that playoff opportunities can’t be taken lightly. The Bulldogs have a 33-4 playoff record the past 6 seasons and two of those losses have come to El Campo. This week, Ricebird coaches can finally talk about the opponent that fans and high school football enthusiasts have pointed to since the playoff brackets came out. “This week is a heckuva matchup,” Gillis said. “But if you look at it, all the teams left in our region are undefeated district champs. It doesn’t matter, all of us are really good teams that can win on any given night. And for us at El Campo, the (See HARD WORK, Page 6-B)
Regional EC vs Navasota has makings of State championship clash
By KAITLYNN BIANCONI sports@leader-news.com
The Ricebirds are looking to shake up the Navasota Rattlers on Friday night in Conroe, hoping to knock them out of their No. 1 state ranking and give them their first loss of the season. El Campo wants to take the regional title and secure another week in the playoffs. The Rattlers boast a 12-0 record and the district champ title after a 5-0 district run. Their pristine record secured them the top spot in Class 4A.

However, Navasota has played some different opponents. They played a school located in Monterrey, Mexico, Rogers Heritage in Rogers, Ark. and local schools including Sealy and Houston Furr. The Rattlers defeated Sealy 65-6 and Furr 85-0. “They’re a great football team. They’re undefeated and average 60 points a game and only give up 7 points a game,” EC Head Coach Bob Gillis said. “They’re a talented bunch of kids.” They were area finalists in 2013 and made it to the state game in

Round 3 new territory for Hornets Louise game versus Bremond believed to be deepest run ever for LHS
By KAITLYNN BIANCONI sports@leader-news.com
The Hornet pride deepens in Louise as the team enters the regional round of the playoffs to face No. 1 ranked Bremond on Friday night in Bastrop. Louise took out D’Hanis last week in a 20-6 dominating win, but Bremond will be a bigger challenge for the Hornets. “They’re really good, and they’re pretty big and fast,” Head Coach David Lucio said. “They’re really aggressive man-to-man.” The Tigers enter the match-up with an 11-0 record, easily taking the district title with a 6-0 run. Bremond defeated common opponents Burton and Milano. The Tigers defeated Milano 38-0 and Burton 55-21. The Hornets beat Burton 28-20, and defeated Milano 25-6 in the bi-district playoff round. The Tigers are used to having a strong season after going 21-5 in the past two seasons combined. They finished 12-1 in 2013 and were state quarter-finalists. With a No. 1 ranked team, they are sure to have stand-out players. “Their quarterback (Roshauud Paul) is pretty good, and RayAndre Browning and Jacobly Davis are outstanding ball players,” Lucio said. “They just have a lot of good ball players. But they’re kind of young, they have a lot of sophomores and juniors.” Paul has completed 54 of 78 passes for 1,033 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. LHS, Bills making memories in 2014 This was the night that Louise Athletic Director and Assistant Coach Joe Bill had been waiting for his entire coaching career. Over the past six years I have watched four Louise head coaches and all the other assistant coaches come and go. The one constant on the Louise sideline has been Joe Bill. Coach Bill has always been the emotional and spiritual heart of the Hornets. He has stayed on while the others left in order to watch his boys grow up and play varsity ball. Last Friday under the dazzling lights of the beautiful, spanking new Texas Lutheran University Stadium, his loyalty, patience and perseverance finally paid off. With the D’Hanis Cowboys effectively bottling up Louise’s fleet, shifty speedster Chris Kutac, the Hornets unleashed their secret weapon in the form Jase Bill. Mostly relegated to a secondary role throughout the season, Jase had a night for the ages. The 5-5, 140-pound junior flanker came out of nowhere and was suddenly everywhere, hauling in 8 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. A 40-yard reception in second quarter got the Hornets out of deep enemy territory and kept a scoring drive alive. Louise had lost two district games after leading very late in the fourth quarter, giving up late big plays to lose in heartbreaking fashion. A sense of dread overcame Louise faithful as it looked like it was all happening again. With a one touchdown lead and just over two minutes left in the game, the Hornets faced a crucial 3rd and ten on their own 43 yard line. This time, Jase Bill never gave them a chance. He caught a perfectly executed screen pass, took it 57 yards to the house and the celebration was on. Yes, this biggest win in Louise history was a total team effort with outstanding defense, great offensive line protection, and stellar quarterback play. But the night will hold a special place in the hearts of the Bills – Joe, Jase and Jacob.

They do both phases well.” Returning is quarterback Shelton Eppler, who passed for 2,691 yards in 2013. He added 28 touchdowns and completed 165 of 274 passes. This year however he’s upped his game, completing 202 of 300 passes for 3,869 yards with 54 passing touchdowns. Navasota has a slew of talented runners. Derrion Randle (5-9, 200) tops the team with 101 carries for 1,104 yards and 14 touchdowns. Jarvis Norman has 59
carries for 561 yards and 4 touchdowns. Lamarquis Jefferson (5-9, 180) has tallied 51 totes for 401 yards and 6 touchdowns. On the receiving side, Tren’Davion Dickson has 57 catches for 1,516 yards and 30 touchdowns. Jerbrell Lipscomb has tallied 36 catches for 540 yards with 5 touchdowns, and Sammy Blair currently has 27 catches for 379 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Rattlers currently have 7,471 offensive yards, with 2,994 rushing, 3,700 receiving and 558 kick return yards. Dickson and Eppler were selected as the District 18-
3A Newcomers of the Year in 2013, and are said to be one of the top quarterback/receiving duos in the state. The defense has earned recognition after allowing, on average, just one score a game. “They’re not huge, but they’re very quick. They get off the block and have great technique. They swarm and then tackle,” Gillis said. The Ricebirds defeated the Carthage Bulldogs 28-21 last week in New Caney to take the area trophy. There’s room for improvement. “We’re just working on correcting some things. We had 13 penalties last week, that

more you win, the more you want to win.” For Ricebird coaches, much of their satisfaction occurs after the final horn sounds on Friday night, and during the return home from the game. By Saturday, it’s back to the grindstone and figuring out how to defeat the next opponent. “When you’re on that bus
and you turn around and look at those kids’ faces ... I tell you, that’s what it’s all about,” Gillis said. “To see their satisfaction with accomplishing something as a team, as a unit. It’s a great atmosphere. But then when you settle back in Saturday, you’ve got to put that behind you and go to work. We don’t have time to sit around and be proud of ourselves. It’s on to the next
challenge. Maybe when we’re old and retired we can think about all those things. But not now.” Late Friday night, after both teams return home from Conroe, the light switch will be turned off at one field house for the final time this season. Ricebird nation hopes like the dickens that Friday will be the night the lights go out on the Rattlers.

can’t happen,” Gillis said. “We’re working on our kicking game at times, just clean it up.” Despite the record and the reputation of Navasota, the players and coaches aren’t letting it intimidate them. “We know that the teams that are left are all really good football teams,” Gillis said. “There’s no doubt they’re good, but we’re pretty good too. We’ve played in some good games.” The Ricebirds are set to kickoff against the Navasota Ratters Friday night at 7:30 at Buddy Moorhead Stadium in Conroe.

Junior Skills
Shea Slattery, Brittany Graham and Kaitlyn Davlin (l-r) competed in Area 3 contest where they won first place in senior ag skills. The team will be advancing to the state contest Friday, Dec. 5 at Sam Houston State University.
Members of the El Campo FFA junior skills team will be heading to the state contest next week after placing first in junior ag skills at the Area 3 contest this past weekend. Team members (l-r) are: Robyn Jeffery, Chelsey Ott and Erin Jeffery.
FFA Earns Sweepstakes Title El Campo High students represent school at Area 3 LDE, some advancing to state contest Saturday, Nov. 22 turned out to be a successful day for the El Campo FFA. This day marked the fourth consecutive Area 3 Leadership Development Event sweepstakes championship for the chapter. Area 3 is the largest, most populated, and by record, the most competitive of the 10 areas in the state of Texas. The sweepstakes championship is a highly coveted prize, and is in almost every case, decided by a one to two point margin between the first and second place schools. This year the margin that secured El Campo the victory turned out to be larger with a seven point spread. “Such a big point spread
is virtually unheard of at the Area 3 LDE contest,” advisor Craig Hardin said. “This area is the toughest in the state, and our teams bringing home the area championship in such a decisive manner is proof of the willingness to work, dedication and desire to win that is possessed by the students, as well as the advisors who trained them.” Team members who qualified and competed at the Area 3 contest are: Senior Skill: Kaitlyn Davlin, Shea Slattery and Brittany Graham. Junior Skills: Chelsey Ott, Robyn Jeffery and Erin Jeffery. Agricultural Advocacy: Amanda Zboril, Kyler Valenta, Randie Hlavaty and Natalie Nohavitza.
Public Relations: Baily Popp, Kori Couvillion and Breanne Bauer. Senior Quiz: Colton Krutilek, Rachel Pustejovsky, Rosie Krenek and Michelle Sutton. Job Interview: Ellie Forgason. Senior Creed Speaking: Ellie Forgason. Junior Creed Speaking: McKenzie Ellis. Radio Broadcasting: Jennie Ritter, Blair Bunge and Krystana Stavinoha. Agricultural Issues: Blair Bunge, Jennie Ritter, Essance Allen, Krystana Stavinoha and Audrey Anderson. Ag teachers/team coaches were
Shawn Peters, Ashley Jett, Clint Love and Craig Hardin. Student support staff included Carson Rose, Chase Stary, Jeremy Chapa and Ryon Korenek. Six teams who will be advancing to the state contest are agricultural advocacy, junior skills, senior skills, public relations, senior creed speaking and job interview. The event, to be held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville starting Friday, Dec. 5, is a twoday process with state semi-finals. The top 10 teams in each of the 13 competitions will advance to the finals on Saturday, Dec. 6. With four teams at the state contest last year, El Campo FFA were
two points short of winning the state sweepstakes championship, and were sweepstakes runner-up for 2013. “We are so proud of our teams and we are all eagerly looking forward to the state contest,” Hardin said. We’ve got an exceptional group of students on our teams and a staff of ag teachers who are dedicated to the success of these students. This year’s LDE success has surpassed any year to date for the El Campo FFA. We want to thank everyone that has supported us–our administration, the parents of our students and the support staff that we so strongly depend upon.”
FFA member Ellie Forgason placed in the Area 3 Leadership Development Event in senior creed speaking and job interview. She will be advancing to the state contest.
Public Relations Members of the public relations team (l-r) Korie Couvillion, Bailey Popp and Breanne Bauer are headed to state after placing second in the Area 3 Leadership Development Event Saturday. State contests will be over a two-day period.
Top FFA Group Ten El Campo FFA teams advanced to the Area 3 Leadership Development Event Saturday, Nov. 22, with six of those advancing to the state contest in December. They also claimed the title of sweepstakes championship at this event. Participants at area are pictured left to right as follows: (row one) Kori Couvillion, Jennie Ritter, Michelle Sutton, Amanda Zboril, Audrey Anderson, Breanne Bauer, Rand-
Agricultural Advocacy El Campo FFA agricultural advocacy team members (l-r) Randie Hlavaty, Natalie Nohavitza, Kyler Valenta and Amanda Zboril came in first place in the Area 3 Leadership Development Event. They will compete at state next week.

Czech Catholic Home serving area community for 60 years
Friday, Nov. 7 marked Czech Catholic Home’s 60th anniversary. The facility has served the community of Hillje, Louise, El Campo and surrounding areas for six decades by providing care for the elderly population. The home celebrated with a cake and punch social and invited the community to stop by the facility. Friends, family and residents celebrated by bringing pictures, articles and mementos from past years and enjoying food and fellowship. Everyone was entertained with piano music played by Jerry Humberson. Mayor Randy Collins attended and gave a greeting and proclamation marking the occasion. The ladies from the Red Hat Society were also guests and were dressed in their red hat regalia. Guests were given the opportunity to win one of four door prizes donated by Angels Home Health, St. Christina’s EMS and Antlers Above.
At this time of year slippery sidewalks should get a lot of attention. Dreary winter weather brings the algae and fungus combination to its full hydration and incredible slippery-ness. This is a real problem for our elderly who tend to wear smooth bottom shoes and suffer from impaired balance. A fall and the resulting injury can be life threatening. The problem tends to be worst at older homesteads where trees and landscape shrubs have matured and the walk is protected from direct sunlight. Unfortunately, this is often where older folks live. If your stairs, concrete, brick or stone walkway is dark in color, you have a fungus growing on the surface. In many cases it is mixed with algae and that is the slippery agent. Often, homeowners get their walking surfaces power-washed. This is the quick fix, but total removal of the living organisms is difficult. If you come back six months later, you will see wisps of new fungal re-growth. After the power-wash job you still need to spray on an application of household bleach. The mixture formula is not real important, but about one part bleach with three parts water is a good guide. The oxidizing action of the chlorine is quickly neutralized by the pavement surface, soil and the organic goo that it is dissolving. You can start with just the bleach spray and by-pass the pressure wash. Let it soak in and dry. Don’t rinse it off. Avoid spraying it on plant leaves. If the stain does not go away immediately, the slippery characteristic will be gone, and with time the stain will weather away. Wear protective gloves, glasses, and your worst clothing. I have ruined many shirts and pants while I was just positive that I was being careful. Check the walks of your elderly family and neighbors. Do them a BIG favor and make their life safer. The active ingredient in all chlorine bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite. The percentage concentrate is variable from brand to brand. Some brands do not tell the strength. There are concentrated forms with 8.25 percent, regular with 5.25 percent and Clorox even produces an Outdoor Formula Gel Concentrate (for a higher price). Cheap bleach does not

mean bad bleach. On a similar note there is a similar (if not identical) fungus that darkens your roof shingles. If you study the patterns of light and dark areas, you will notice that the clean areas are always down-hill from metal flashings that are zinc coated, copper, or lead. The minute amount of these metal atoms that dissolve with each rain keep the fungus from growing. New shingles come with small metal grains mixed with the aggregate on the surface of the asphalt composition shingles. Those will stay bright until the metal is all dissolved, hopefully 30+ years. That can explain why your roof is dark and your neighbor’s is bright. Logically, a bright roof will be cooler and result in a cooler attic. Several homeowners have figured out that copper based fungicides applied to the roof can do this job for you. The results come slowly. Maybe six months later you will look up and be surprised at how clean your roof now looks. Don’t walk on the roof to do this. It could be damaging to the roof and to you. Get a hose-on siphon sprayer that will allow you to cover the roof without leaving the ground. The roof will look blue for a few days, but the results lie ahead. – Leon Macha is a consulting certified Horticulturist/ Arborist with 40+ years of experience in our region.

Lifestyle Today Turkey Transformations
Stir up these delicious unique leftover ideas
After the big day has come and gone, most holiday hosts find themselves still talking turkey. What to do with all that leftover bird? During the long weekend following the holiday, you can put those leftovers to good use. Recipes that incorporate turkey in deliciously unique ways will help you use up those leftovers and clear out the fridge before you know it. To ensure the tastiest dishes you can feel good about serving your loved ones, look for the USDA-verified seal on your turkey’s packaging to know that your turkey was raised with no growth-promoting antibiotics by farmers who care. One good option: Honeysuckle White, the first major turkey brand to supply turkey without growthpromoting antibiotics and without charging a premium price. For more recipes and preparation tips, visit www.honeysucklewhite.com.
Holiday Minis Servings: 48 pieces Prep time: 15 minutes Bake time: 15-20 minutes 1 pound (or 3 cups) chopped Honeysuckle White turkey (dark and white meat) 1 package (14 ounces) cornbread stuffing mix 1 jar (16 ounces) turkey gravy 1 can (6 ounces) cranberry sauce with whole cranberries Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray mini muffin pans (as many as needed to make 48 bites) with nonstick cooking spray. Chop freshly cooked or leftover turkey into 1/4-inch pieces. In large bowl, prepare stuffing mix as directed on package. Add turkey to stuffing mixture. Stir in 1 cup turkey gravy. Mixture should hold together when spooned into a ball. If mixture is too dry, add more gravy by tablespoons until correct consistency is achieved. Spoon stuffing mixture into muffin pan, filling each cavity full, then pressing mixture down to level top of each bite. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Remove from pan and garnish each bite with cranberry sauce. Additional gravy may be heated and served on side as dipping sauce. Turkey Croissant Servings: 12 Prep time: 20 minutes
Total time: 25 minutes 1 pound (approximately 2 cups) of leftover Honeysuckle White whole turkey, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 cup toasted pine nuts 1 cup diced celery 6 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 6 tablespoons diced red bell pepper 1 cup low-fat mayonnaise 2 tablespoons lemon juice 12 croissants Combine turkey, pine nuts, celery, chives and red pepper in medium bowl. Stir in mayonnaise and lemon juice. Split croissants and place generous helping of turkey salad on bottom half of each, top with remaining half and serve. To toast pine nuts: Place nuts in dry skillet in single layer and toast over low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring as needed to prevent burning. Because pine nuts can burn easily, it is a good idea to watch until they are golden and fragrant, which means they are toasted. Cozy Turkey Soup Servings: 6 Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 1 hour, 15 minutes 1 white onion, minced (reserve 2 tablespoons) 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1.4 pounds (approximately 3 cups) of leftover Honeysuckle White turkey, chopped 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon coarse ground pepper 1/2 cup diced celery 1 cup diced carrot 1 clove garlic, minced 5 yellow peppers, seeded and diced 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 1 can (15 ounces) chicken stock 1 tablespoon salt Bread bowls (optional) 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese In skillet, saute onion in 2 tablespoons olive oil for 2-3 minutes. Add cooked turkey and 1/8 teaspoon salt and pepper to desired flavor. Set aside. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in large stockpot on low. Saute celery, carrot, garlic and reserved 2 tablespoons onion for approximately 10 minutes, or until vegetables are soft. Add yellow peppers, potatoes, stock and 1 tablespoon salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender. Cool for 10 minutes, then transfer back to pot to keep
warm. Add turkey and onion mixture to soup. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese.

Community urged to support small businesses in competitive market By JODY LARIMER reporter@leader-news.com
On the heels of Black Friday, and sneaking in before Cyber Monday, is Small Business Saturday, a campaign designed to promote and support small, local businesses. “Small Business Saturday is this Saturday, Nov. 29,” El Campo Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca Muños said. “We are excited to encourage everyone to patron our local small businesses and support Small Business Saturday.” This shopping event was launched by American Express and first observed Nov. 27, 2010. Since that time, it has generated billions of dollars for tens of thousands of retailers.

Cost of holiday feast less than previous year Survey reveals 2.68 percent savings Cost-savings join family and fun on the menu this Thanksgiving. A traditional, Texas-style Thanksgiving dinner for 10 will cost $46.79 this year, marking a nearly 3 percent savings over last year, according to the special Texas Farm Bureau 2014 Thanksgiving Meal Report. The 2014 report shows a decrease of $1.29, or 2.68 percent, from the 2013 TFB Thanksgiving Meal Report. The survey records the cost of 10 holiday staples – including turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pecan pie. “Texans are sensitive to grocery prices, especially when preparing large meals. This year, shoppers will notice a slight decrease in the overall price of their Thanksgiving meal,” TFB President Kenneth Dierschke said. Despite reports suggesting a decrease in turkey supplies, Texas shoppers shouldn’t feel the pinch at the cash register. Survey shoppers found the price of a 16-pound, frozen, self-basting, young tom turkey to be more than $1 less than last year, marking a 6.11 percent decrease. In addition to the turkey, five other items decreased in price: brown and serve rolls, 12 per package (down 8.33 percent); frozen green beans(down 6.08 percent);
9-inch frozen pie shells(down 3.73 percent); cubed stuffing with herb seasoning (down 1.83 percent); and pecans, shelled and halved (down 1.23

“Farmers and ranchers ensure Texans can serve their families a well-balanced meal at an affordable cost,” Dierschke said. “That allows Texans to gather around the table to enjoy the company of family and friends and reflect on the things for which we are grateful.” TFB’s fourth quarter Grocery Price Watch survey, taken in conjunction with the 2014 Thanksgiving Meal Report, indicated a slight increase of 1.22 percent for household staples from the third quarter. Results from the quarterly survey of 16 common food products increased 61 cents from $49.88 in the third quarter to $50.49 in the fourth quarter of this year. TFB’s Thanksgiving Meal Report and Grocery Price Watch prices were reported by 38 volunteer shoppers at grocery stores statewide from Nov. 4-11.
