El Campo Heritage Makes for Unique Place
EL CAMPO Growing City Hasn't Forgotten its Country Roots

oes it feel like you’ve been here before? Maybe you have. Or at least some place like this – even if only in a half-forgotten story. You know the place – the one where folks walking past still smile in greeting and hands wave from passing pickup trucks. If you stay long enough, people assume you must be the lost cousin of that family who once lived three streets over or across town (You remember, hun, the ones who had that big dog that used to sun itself in the center of the road? Sure you do.) The signs read El Campo. The T-shirts add, “Pearl of the Prairie,” a descriptor it earned more than 130 years ago and still prides itself on today. Just ask the people you meet in the grocery store or at the almost-every-weekend church or community social. There’s just something about this place. Phillip and Chandra Spenrath aren’t from El Campo – jobs rather than relatives or roots drew them here. But they found far more, they say. Now, the couple and their five boys (Rhett born in 1997, Reed 1999, Reagan 2002, Rhenner 2004 and Ridge 2006) call it home. Phillip Spenrath serves as the county judge and Chandra is the executive director of the City Development Corporation tasked with finding ways to create jobs and help the community grow. “Phillip’s job brought us here, the community is what changed our lives,” Chandra said. “We both agreed we felt that the
El Campo community had the foundational values and the integrity we wanted our boys to be raised with ... Immediately we found our new church family at First Baptist Church of El Campo .... Volunteering wherever we found the opportunity allowed us to meet amazing new people and make lifelong friends in the community.” Their El Campo experience started in July 1999, when Phillip was hired by the El Campo Independent School District to coach basketball and teach government. At the time, Chandra was working at a Victoria firm. Married in 1995, they had two children and one was on the way. Like many, the couple found there’s just something about the city where three heritages blend everyday. A slowly growing town of 11,602 within the city limits and claiming another couple thousand in the surrounding area, El Campo hasn’t gained the detachment found in other towns. (Going to the grocery store? It’s like a time to visit, Girl. You see everybody while grabbing beer and a brisket to throw on the pit.) What would you tell the family thinking of relocating here? “Pack a bag when you come because you’ll want to set a spell,” Phillip said. Chandra added, “I love this conversation. I have it often. ... When Phillip and I are out of El Campo, we love to boast about our remarkable community members and their accomplishments. We usually only highlight a few, there are

too many to list.” So much is here because the citizens said they wanted it – and were willing to reach into pockets and pocketbooks for the sake of their children and their children’s children. The current hospital? Built via a community fundraiser. The library? Fundraiser. The fire department: All volunteer. The community swimming pool and Little League park? Yep, those were fundraisers too. The decorative planters and light posts downtown? Paid via fundraisers or families (each one bearing a plaque in memory or honor of some one) and maintained by BEEs – the Beautify El Campo Extension – a volunteer group. Same with the museum – although it does have one, yes just one, paid staff member. “El Campo (Wharton County) is the greatest place in the world to live and raise a family,” Phillip Spenrath said. “For me, it’s like stepping back in time to my hometown of Comfort, Texas. Everyone knows everyone and all are ready and willing to help those in need. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else. This is the only place our five boys have ever called home.” And that’s why they’ve made a commitment to it, Chandra said. “Both of us want each child who is born (not only ours) to El Campo to know that they can come back home (if they leave) to a prospering community due to the commitment El Campo has to attracting good jobs that will continue to increase the overall wealth of the community,” she said. “We want our boys to be proud to call El Campo home because it has equipped them with the tools and skills they need to conquer life as young men, fathers, brothers and friends. We want El Campo to be contagious outside our community as well.” The sense of community is especially strong at the church picnics or places like Mikeska’s Lunch Box which hearkens back to the dining places of a young blue collar nation. It’s is an all-you-can-eat joint where calorie-counting would be sacrilegious and you find a seat wherever you can – no, not a table – just a spot at one. (Hey, Gal, could you pass the ketchup? And, by the way, what’d you think about that storm last night? Sure did need the rain.) There, farm hands and city officials sit elbow to elbow, passing the paper towel rolls used in lieu of napkins and talking about everything
from the weather to whatever sport happens to be in season. A new face is just another reason to linger, visit and grab a bowl of that ohso-good banana pudding. “Anywhere you go, you run into somebody you know,” Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca Muños said. “Maybe you go to church with them, or have kids in Little League. Everybody is connected to everybody in some way.” Immigrating Czechs created the town, but it was the Hispanic influence which gave the city its lasting name and the diverse population its first national recognition. El Campo – The Camp – was a railhead called Prairie Switch when it was created for the New York, Texas and Mexican Railroad in 1882. Located in the midst of cattle country, the cowboys loading thousands of San Antonio-bound cattle at what’s now Evans Park referred to the community as “the Pearl of the Prairie” based on the effect caused by the depot light shining across the flat land each night. What were the Spenraths’ first impressions of El Campo? “Inviting. Friendly. Progressive. Cohesive. Forward thinking. Fun. Family values. Integrity,” Chandra quickly rattled off when asked. “Having young children when we first moved here, the abundance of high-quality daycare and preschools to choose from was a huge blessing and reassurance that we made the right choice. The extra-curricular activities offered for the youth was a huge draw as well, Little League, soccer, Boy Scouts, etc. “We knew the ECISD was a good school district and would complement our children’s education well.” El Campo ISD – a 3A district with 3,625 children – has met all standards, according to the Texas Education Agency’s rating system. It has five campuses: three elementary schools, a middle school and a single high school built with a small college style (multiple small buildings and large open air quadrangle.) The elementary schools are divided by grade level – pre-kindergarten to first go to Myatt, second and third to Hutchins and fourth and fifth to Northside. And, in a town where a large percentage of the population can still point to the home where grandma and grandpa once lived, the happenings of the children are standard coffee shop fare along with taxes, mosquito spraying and the best fishin’ spot. Residents assume you know the Rice-

are involved if the community stays strong and diverse in retail and primary jobs,” she said. In November 2010, Phillip Spenrath won the race for county judge and has held the post ever since then. For the Spenraths, El Campo has turned into far, far more than just another stop on their career paths. “We often talk about how we could have never dreamed or planned for this amazing life that we have today. Therefore we live one day at time and hold on loosely; seeking what God will bring us to next. Our faith is strong and know that we are not here in El Campo by accident, but by God’s design,” Chandra said. It’s a matter of faith. “Looking back over the past 25 years, it’s amazing to see the great number of doors that God has opened and closed in my life,” Phillip said. “I honestly never thought about running for a political office until recent years. While some things have changed in the past 10 years, I continue to believe in and stick with my old-school conservative values.” Families still gather for Sunday dinner here – dining on fundraiser plates of everything from fried chicken to enchiladas as often as what mom or grandma whipped up in the kitchen. The art of grilling is revered with something akin to religious fever. Fathers wouldn’t stand for their sons to be thought of as bad barbecuers. It’s a matter of pride, just like making sure their daughter’s aim is good enough to take down a deer too. (She can drive that tractor too, that ain’t no lie.) You still hear Czech in El Campo, although now it’s more likely to be sung than spoken. Polka – the “happy music” – echoes through the dance halls and festivals. And it’s not just the old folks taking a turn on the dance floor. Sure rock, western swing and even some rap are popular – but The Hide And Seek Polka? That’s coming home. (Apples, peaches, pumpkin pie. Who’s not ready? Hollar I. Let’s all play hide and seek.) Go into Frankie Novak’s downtown butcher shop and order yourself a sandwich that would make the hungriest working man grin or a few inchthick rib-eyes and you’re not likely to walk out without learning a few words of the language. Walking around town, you’ll meet more than a few people apparently missing vowels in their names (Gwos-

birds – the high school mascot – made it to State not only in 2012, but 1967 too. What sport? Football, of course – you’re in Texas after all (Them boys, they done this city proud – they may not have won that final game, but they sure did play their hearts out). Like all El Campo coaches, Phillip helped with football when needed, but his love is basketball – a sport he coached successfully for 19 years before politics went from theory in his government classroom to a full-time job. “In 2006, I ran for El Campo City Council solely as a class lab project to expose my students to local government and the entire campaign process: issues, fundraising, debates, media advertising, etc.,” he said. “It was a great experience as each day in class we talked about the ins and outs of the election process. Quite honestly, I didn’t expect to win.” But he did. “When Phillip called to let me know he was running for City Council ... My thoughts were, ‘Wow, we have only been here a short period of time. Will the community embrace an outsider?’ As time has gone on, having the opportunity to work alongside Phillip through his political career has been an amazing journey. Number one, the friends you meet along the way are priceless,” Chandra said. El Campo’s still a hard-working town. The largest single employers are Greenleaf Nursery, a wholesale nursery center, the Walmart Supercenter and the school district, but hundreds work the farms, fields and pastures surrounding the Pearl of the Prairie. Mark’s Machine through its Tough Country branch builds pickup truck accessories like bumpers and grilles. Leedo Cabinetry makes cabinets for apartments while the Wagners do custom orders. Prasek’s Hillje Smokehouse is a national sausage producer and distributor tucked in with a truck stop, eatery and shopping venue on U.S. 59 in Hillje. “A lot of rural communities are losing population, that is not the case for El Campo,” Chandra Spenrath said. As the leader of the city’s industrial development branch, it’s her job to help the job offerings and thus the population grow. “We are often a resource for assistance (non-financial) to many businesses and employees. It is an honor to assist new and existing companies with their business needs. Retail is wonderful and contributes to our sales tax fund. It is a win-win for all those who

Roy Benavidez is perhaps the city’s best known son, a man born in Cuero, but who always considered the Pearl of the Prairie his home. Benavidez received the nation’s highest honor rescuing soldiers and classified documents May 2, 1968 under withering fire during the Vietnam War. Recovering from injuries initially thought to be fatal, Benavidez served honorably until 1976 when he and his family returned to his boyhood home. Benavidez died in 1998, but his widow, children and several other family members still call the city home. His uniform is on permanent display at the Wharton County Historical Museum in Wharton, the county seat, along with other memorabilia. The Medal of Honor President Ronald Reagan draped around his neck is there on a rotating basis. William “Willie” Bell was one of the first El Campoans to make national news – at least in those papers who would write about the truly amazing athletic performances of the black man. Born Aug. 31, 1897, Bell played in baseball’s Negro Leagues making it to the 1924 inaugural Negro League World Series. Known for his excellent control with a moving fastball, Bell, then age 27, threw in three games, winning his only decision and compiling a 2.63 ERA. In the 1925 Negro League World Series, Bell boasted a 1.13 ERA in three games. Pitching from 1923 to 1936, Bell (141-57) is considered the fifth best in

the League’s history and he could bat, too, hitting .321 in 1927 and .286 in 1929. When his playing days were over, he returned to the portion of El Campo then known as West End or Ox Blood. There in the segregated area of town, Bell became a successful businessman and turned his “Bull Patch” into a sort of Field of Dreams for young black boys. Although he died in a car crash March 16, 1969, Bell’s contribution to the city has never been forgotten. Willie Bell Park on West Second Street bears a plaque honoring the hurler. Bell and Benavidez are just two of the town’s stories. Others – like the Rawlinson family – are fifth generation ranchers. The Hernandez’ – owners of Frank’s Concrete – have been mixing and pouring for generations too. And another family with the same last name has run the ever-popular Casa Hernandez for decades. Clubs recognize membership by the decades. Teachers welcome to the classroom the children of those children they taught oh so many years ago. “That’s what is so special about El Campo,” Phillip Spenrath said. “Despite the struggling national economy and severe weather conditions, not much has changed in many years. El Campo residents continue to shop locally, support local businesses, and remain active in local projects and community leadership.”

hen moving to El Campo, many expect to find a typical Texas town where football is the center of the culture. While football is certainly a big part of the town, the schools and community boast proudly on all the sports and activities offered. The El Campo Little League All-Stars have an important presence during the summer. Usually boasting at least eight teams, El Campo has squads with players in age ranges from 9 years old to senior baseball and softball. In the 2013 season alone – out of the eight Little League teams that EC fielded – two went on to win district titles and reach the state playoffs. The 9/10-year-old softball All-Stars won the district title, while the 11/12-year-old softball All-Stars won the Section 4 title. In previous seasons, Senior softball has captured the following: Southwest Regional Champions, Texas East State Champions, Section 4 Champions and District 18 Champions. The 9/10 and 11/12 softball teams have won: District 18 Champions, Texas East State Champions and Section 4 Champions. In 2011, the Senior softball team went to the World Series in Delaware and finished sixth in the world. Although they didn’t come home with the championship, the team had a blast. “We went into the tournament with probably a little bit less talent than the really elite teams, but we went toe-to-toe with them,” team manager Donna Kutac told the Leader-News in 2011. “These

girls showed a lot of class and that was refreshing because some of the teams did not. They did Texas proud and they absolutely did El Campo proud.” The 2009 Senior Softball team went to the World Series in Kalamazoo, Mich. During the tournament, they played teams from the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Poland and California. The 2006 Junior League baseball team reached the World Series in Taylor, Mich. They brought home the first Junior World title for El Campo, beating Mexico in the title game. “We’ve known this team has been special all along,” Team Manager Mark Van Gorp told the Leader-News in 2006. “Just the growth of the players and the fact they play a lot of baseball tied this season together. They play because they love the game. I think that is something you just don’t teach and you can’t coach that. “They have to want to play. With these boys that’s never been an issue.” In 2003, the Senior softball All-Stars placed third in the World Series in Kentucky. This was the first-ever girls softball team to advance to the World Series. “It’s an experience I don’t think anybody is going to forget,” Team Manager Ronny Collins said then. “It really is phenomenal. When you think back to when these girls were 10 and just going to the State tournament was such a thrill. Their goal was to keep on going higher every year.” The first team to represent El Campo in
the World Series was the 1961 11/12-yearold Little League All-Stars. Traveling to Williamsport, Pa., the All-Stars went all the way to the WS finals before falling to a team from El Cajon, Calif. in the title game. The El Campo Red Wave is a recreational summer swim team that has kids from elementary school to high school who compete against other teams in the area. Some kids on the team play other sports during the school year, while others swim on their school swim teams as well. This year, 11-year-old Conner Williams of El Campo was named the Male Athlete of the Year for 2013 by the Texas Amateur Athlete Federation. Williams was honored at the TAAF Summer Games in Corpus Christi, where he got to light the torch that signified the beginning of the games and gave an opening speech. His teammates were with him at the Summer Games, and some of the team members who won medals at 2012 Summer Games went on to Nationals in Hershey, Pa. Many Red Wave swimmers have also competed in multiple state and national competitions. The team is a non-profit organization and is run by a board that meets once a month and practices at the El Campo Aquatics Center. The team’s coaches are Leon Button, Marilynn Sorrel and Carli Brown. The El Campo High School cheer squad has a busy schedule, between winning competitions and cheering on the home team. In 2013 alone, the squad has

The Ricebird football team helps give the cheerleaders a reason to cheer. The football team has gone to the playoffs for the past seven seasons and has made 32 season playoff appearances, ranking them at number 56 in the state for AllTime Playoff Appearances. Out of those 32 playoff appearances, the Ricebirds have played in the state championship game twice. In 2012, they reached the 3A State Championships at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. And although they lost to Stephenville 70-35, the team had thousands of El Campo fans follow them up north to watch the game. They finished 2012 with a 14-1 record. El Campo’s first championship showing was in 1967 in the 3A championship
game against Brownwood, where they lost 36-12. The Ricebirds are ranked eighth in Class 3A All-Time Winning Percent Leaders with a winning percentage of 66.67 percent. When in class 4A, EC still sits at No. 5 in all-time wins in 4A with 617 victories. The win-loss record for the past five years is an impressive 47-12. El Campo is also part of the state’s longest running football rivalry, competing against Bay City. The rivalry started in 1911, and has been played for 93 consecutive years, running from 1920-2013. El Campo has held a six-year winning streak, and is in the lead with wins 57-43-9. The total number of games played in the rivalry is 109. Two of the most well-known former Ricebird players are Heath Sherman and Arkeith Brown. Sherman, ECHS class of 1985, went on to play in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles for five seasons. He was a sixth-round draft pick in the 1989 class. He played college ball at Texas A&M Kingsville. Brown, ECHS class of 2005, graduated and went on to play at Texas A&M University, where he led the Aggie defense. He was then drafted to the Arena Football League. Since then, he has won two championships while playing for the Arizona Rattlers.
won the girls doubles 2A state title in 1963 with Jane Naiser and Diana Matula. Gene Pebbles brought home the 3A boy singles title in 1960. The Ladybird volleyball team is coming back this season with a line-up full of strong hitters and are looking for a title. In 2012, they tied for third in 3A District 25. Facing up against district opponents such as Columbus and Sealy in preseason tournaments will give the team a preview of what’s to come. Head Coach Melissa Popp earned many awards during her years playing at Texas A&M University, and is now putting that knowledge to good use. Run by Alonzo Richardson, Richardson Family Karate is located in El Campo, and teaches everyone from kids to their parents. Richardson learned karate in Houston under Lonnie Posey. Richardson holds a fourth degree black belt in tae-kwon-do. Although he has taught all over the Gulf Coast region, he has been at his current studio in El Campo for the past three years. El Campo may have Friday night plans made for August through November well in advance, but the city has other sports to offer everyone from small kids to active adults.

El Campo starts off middle schoolers in football, which helps the high school coaches to watch players grow up and instill their fundamental skills. Although the team graduated 19 of their 22 starters in 2012, Head Coach Bob Gillis is building a strong team for 2013. “What we have been doing ever since last year ended was to teach and talk to this group about leadership and carrying on the winning tradition,” Gillis said. “Not just in El Campo, but with every team, you’ve got a new group stepping up to replace the one that just graduated. “Every team is unique and different in their own way. As coaches we have to figure out what these kids do best.” The 2012 ECHS baseball team won the 3A District 25 title after their first year in 3A and made it to the quarterfinal round in the playoffs. The baseball team also graduated a number of players in 2012, but with depth on the bench and JV players stepping up to fill the shoes of their former teammates, the team isn’t nearly as empty as some might have expected. The Ricebirds baseball team has won three state championship titles. In 1961 and 1967 they won the 3A state title, and in 1981 they won the 4A State Championship. El Campo High School’s tennis team

omething for everyone and a salute to farmers who make the city thrive are the focus of the city’s soon-to-be West Loop Park, a $1.6 million project under development near a new Little League ball park and competition fields for El Campo High School set on roughly 60 acres near the intersection with West Jackson. The multiple farm-themed amenities will be packed into 3.5 acres nestled beside a pond, performance pavilion and plenty of open green space. Still in its early stages, the municipal portion of the West Loop Park development calls for an entrance path with rows of sea oats simulating crops and “hay bales” – actually decorative climbing stairs for children. Visitors will then meander through a “grove of trees” (which considering the land was a plowed soybean field in the early portion of 2013 may not have reached a respectable height as of this reading) before making their way to multiple play sites – one for toddlers with a barn motif slide and other animal-shaped play equipment; another for children ages five to 12 that includes handicap accessibility; and a maze with assorted play stations spaced throughout. A pond will be located on the west side of the city park with a pier and small board walk as well as a covered pavilion, landing, picnic area and, of course, restrooms. A walking trail will wind throughout everything with an assortment of open areas for just generalized play. A splash pad with spray devices for children ranging from toddler to pre-teen and an amphitheater are also in the design although plans call for them to be built after other amenities. In late summer 2013, the El Campo City Council dedicated $1 million to the project. The West Loop Park, El Campo City Manager Mindi Snyder said, “is a new, updated amenity for our citizens as well as a destination for those coming to town for sports or just to check out the park and potential development around it.”
She added, the hope is to “progress by late in this year to early next year so that we have it on the ground for the start of the ball season next year (2014) ... Quality of life amenities are a very important part of making our community attractive for families and continue to be a focus with the Council.” Visitors to the city are encouraged to take a drive to the intersection of West Jackson and the West Loop – there may be something worth seeing already there. A new Little League ball park should be ready for play long before then with six fields designed with a classic red brick and black iron theme. Complementing them are two high school competition fields – one baseball and the other softball. All were in various stages of construction as of this writing. And while the newest recreational offerings will be something to see, they are not the only settings for laid-back outdoor entertainment in the city of El Campo. The municipality offers seven other parks for the public’s enjoyment. Friendship Park on North Wharton Street is by far the largest covering more than 26 acres. Surrounded by a one-mile lighted walking track, the park features a playground area, daytime use tennis courts, volleyball courts and soccer fields. Barbecue pits with covered sitting areas are staggered throughout the park and restroom facilities are available near the two covered pavilions. Another play park and half-mile walking trail with fitness stations is available at Rotary Park, located off of East Jackson Street. The 13-acre facility also sports a pavilion, volleyball court, two softball fields and restrooms.
19
Willie Bell Park on West Second Street honors El Campo standout and All-Star Negro League baseball player Willie Bell. Set on the grounds, he once rented so colored children would have a place to play baseball, the nine-acre park’s fields of green race away from a children’s playground and basketball courts as well as a covered pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms. A plaque near the short walking trail highlights the career of Bell who pitched in the Negro League’s first World Series. Across the roadway is Second Street park which also boasts plenty of space for picnics. Evans Park near the railroad tracks off South Mechanic Street is on of the city’s oldest parks and, at just a half-acre, the smallest. Named after Mrs. J.E. Evans, it pays homage to the woman who asked the city’s permission to beautify the area in the early 1920s. The park features benches, a covered pavilion, decorative water fountain and a replica of the old Prairie Switch depot benches along with a decorative lamp. A stone on the north end of the park commemorates El Campo being named the honorary state capital for a day. Another marks the site where a time capsule was buried. Located behind the El Campo Post Office, Alamo Park plays host to the annual Prairie Days Festival the first Saturday in October. The two-acre site has a playground, a covered pavilion and restrooms. A neighborhood park covers 3 1/2 acres on Delta Street in the southwest part of town as part of the El Campo Housing Authority. It includes two uncovered basketball courts and a baseball practice field.

ou don’t have to belong to a quilting group or guild to take up the art of quilting. But those who do belong to a group, like the El Campo Casual Quilters who meet once a month, enjoy working together and learning from one another. Another group, the Catholic Daughters from St. Philip Catholic Church, also get together regularly to quilt. Some individuals, like Diane Thigpen, find so much pleasure in quilting that they attend a summertime quilting retreat. And like most quilters, they create one-of-a-kind keepsakes for their children, grandchildren, friends and even for themselves. For member Marilyn Kucera, quilting is therapeutic. “This is my salvation, because I am on disability,” Kucera said. “It’s one of the few things I can do.” The Casual Quilters and the Catholic Daughters, however, make quilts for charitable causes. Casual Quilters also makes pillowcases and tote bags for children who are taken from the home by Child Protective Services. They also donate to numerous organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Heritage Center, Hospice and Scouts, for their fundraiser prize drawings. The Catholic Daughters have made quilts for their church’s annual parish picnic. The art of quilting may have dated as far back as the early Egyptians. Quilting was very common in the United States in the 18th and early 19th centuries. While its popularity waned during the 20th century, it has regained a renewed interest. With such a wide variety of colorfully patterned fabrics today and the seemingly unlimited design options, Casual Quilters member Carolyn Kelly says quilting “design is never ending, depending on one’s imagination and creativity.” Once a pattern is selected, fabric pieces are carefully cut to size before they are pieced together with a sewing machine. Some quilts, after being pieced on the machine, are hand-quilted, tacked or completed with a long-arm quilting machine. Casual Quilters has been meeting for about 10 years now. They currently have close to 30 members and meet at the Northside Education Center. For Kelly, quilting is a hobby, a pastime where she creates these “gifts made with lots of love,” she said. Judy Leopold of Nada has been a member of Casual Quilters for four years now. She has made quilts for all seven of her grandchildren and for the auction held at her parish’s annual picnic, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada. Her friend, Virginia Pavlovsky of Garwood, is a five-year member. She has made each of her 10 grandchildren at least one quilt. Catherine Drapela, also a member of Casual Quilters, fashions quilts for her parish’s annual picnic. One brought $2,500 a few years back. She makes quilts for family members as well. She has a large family with 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. When the Casual Quilters meet monthly to work on a quilt, they also visit briefly about the projects they have planned. “At every meeting we have a program or class on various quilting techniques,” she said. “Members take turns teaching and occasionally we have an outside teacher.” There is also a time for show and tell in which members present a completed project. For each show and tell, they gain a bead for their safety pin badge, which many wear to the meetings. For newcomers moving to El Campo who are interested in quilting, they can always visit the Casual Quilters. They meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Northside Education Center on Fahrenthold Street. Annual membership is $12. For more information, contact Carolyn Kelly at 979-541-6674.

EL CAMPO MUSEUM
E
l Campo’s museum has a fascinating array of big game mounts – now more than ever – but it’s the children’s section that’s drawing more and more visitors each year. An entire section of the museum’s space in the El Campo Civic Center is dedicated to the Children’s Discovery Center, a 12-station display giving youngsters a chance to dig for hidden treasures or get up close and personal with Roxie, the iguana; Franklin, the turtle; and other tenants. And while the hundreds of animal mounts on display in the facility are notouch items, hands-on samples of geese, deer antlers, snake skin and other curiosities are available in the discovery center which focuses on the age 10 and under crowd. “There’s a lack of things for that age kid to do in town,” Museum Director Cheri McGuirk said, “Sure they could go to the movies or bowling, but there’s no admission here and they can spend all day.” A guardian must accompany children during impromptu visits and some programming. Other programs offered on certain days during the summer vacation months as well as activities on designated weekends throughout the year allow children to be dropped off during sessions. Registration is requested for most of these programs, but Museum Director
Cheri McGuirk said, the museum works to ensure unexpected visitors have an opportunity to participate whenever possible. “We have lots of programming that focuses on educating them about the animals we have,” McGuirk said. “It’s a little education and a whole lot of fun.” The discovery center also gives children a chance to play at activities normally reserved for adults including a miniature post office, a grocery story and vet clinic. It serves another function as well. With towering bears, a leaping lion, stalking tiger, massive rhino and dozens of other large displays, a trip around the display circle can be frightening for little ones, McGuirk said. “It (the center) allows them to get accustomed to the museum and then ease into it,” she said. “We teach them they (the animal mounts) are real, but they are not alive. “They come over here (to the discovery center) first and play, and then all of a sudden they (the animal mounts) aren’t so scary. It’s just a matter of getting them accustomed to them.” Guided tours help too. “We go on a tour, talk about animals and nobody is scared any more,” McGuirk said. The Children’s Discovery Center opened in 2004. Since then, the museum’s number of visitors has increased
dramatically, but that’s not all, McGuirk said. “The amount of time people spend in the museum has increased too,” she said. “Before, it was 20 minutes to zip around the circle (the path along which the trophy mounts are displayed). Now the average visit is sometimes two hours depending on the number of children we have.” And that’s good, McGuirk said, “We want them to think of the museum as a fun place to go.” The El Campo Museum of Natural History was founded in 1978 as a place to display the dozens of big game animal trophies of a local doctor. Exhibits include American brown bears, a tiger with an interesting side story, a walrus, lions and hundreds of other mounts. A special exhibit focuses on species native to the state. The El Campo Civic Center is located at 2350 N. Mechanic at the intersection with the West Loop. The museum is open Tuesday - Friday 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on the museum, call 979-543-6885 or visit the website at http://elcampomuseum.org. – By SHANNON CRABTREE

tory of the area. “While it is specific to Danevang, it’s really about the whole area,” Petersen said. “If you look at what goes on here, you know what happens in El Campo, Wharton and Bay City.” Petersen boasts of their array of donated artifacts from a complete collection of Christmas plates to her favorite thing, the Pioneer House. The original (and very tiny) structure that once housed a family of seven now stands as evidence to the life of the area. “We try to tie everything to real people and the way their lives were and how we can now show how things have evolved over time,” she said. “The roots of the community still exist and our history is important to all of us.” The museum’s collection of tools shows how innovative the people were over 75 years ago, despite their hardships. “Some of the things they did and had to overcome make you really appreciate that they stood their ground here and made it,” Petersen said. “They weathered the storms, they plowed the ground regardless of how terrible the prairie grass was, the mesquite trees, the mosquitoes, the terrible conditions.” She links the past to the present with the perseverance of the people who now
weather the same conditions. “It’s a testimony to the people who were pioneers, not only here, but everywhere,” Petersen said. “They were excellent farmers and they’re still excellent farmers.” The volunteer-run organization also hosts a variety of events throughout the year such as their Fun Run, which takes place in April. They also celebrate St. Lucia on the first or second Saturday of December (Dec. 7 in 2013) with dances around a Christmas tree decorated with traditional red and white Danish ornaments. Singing Danish and traditional holiday carols is part of the annual event as well as a reading on the life of St. Lucia (the patron of blindness). “It’s a fun time,” Petersen said. The museum gives tours and is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday from 1-4 p.m. For information on guided tours of the Danevang Heritage Museum, contact the museum director at (979) 578-0808 or visit www.danevangtx.org/Danish_ Heritage_Museum. –Natalie Frels

“Velkommen” is how the Danish say “welcome.” Adorned in bright red letters, it is the first thing visitors see when they open the doors to the Danish Heritage Museum. The Danevang museum is nothing but inviting, with the warmth of home and of times past glowing throughout. Driving along Hwy. 71 south of El Campo , passersby can’t miss the red and white Danish flag plastered across the wall of the small, but cozy barn. Danish Heritage Preservation Society President Sandra Petersen sits at the long dining room table and explains the past and present of Danish heritage in Texas while the lights on a juletrae, or Christmas tree, twinkle behind her. “People assume that it’s just a little ole dinky museum with not much,” said Petersen, who stressed that her last name is spelled -sen because if it’s spelled -son, “the Danes will be on you like stink on a skunk.” “The museum has lots of very interesting things that people would see that they might not see elsewhere,” she said. Opened in June of 2001, the Danevang Heritage Museum and hosts 800 to 900 visitors each year from the Gulf Coast region and several from Denmark. This year, close to 1,000 will see its artifacts that present the Danish culture and his-

undreds of faces stare back from the faded images on the walls and behind the glass in the display cabinets. Cases along the walls hold everything from memorabilia from long-closed high schools to rusted tools barely holding onto the memories of the hands which turned their gears. Some of the stories haven’t been forgotten, just ask Harold Simmons. He’ll pause in the tour and take up a photo, sometimes with a smile and at other points slowly rubbing his hand along the side of his face. Marine Lance Cpl. Johnny Ceasar’s face stares back from old newspaper clippings on a poster board. He stood his post and performed his duty with honor. But just when he thought he’d earned a rest, a truck bomb rolled up to his Beirut, Lebanon barracks. He was one of 241 killed Oct. 23, 1983. A fellow Marine from El Campo brought him home and the town joined the family in their grief as he was buried in the El Campo Community Cemetery. It’s a sad story, but one that should never be forgotten. That letter jacket? It belongs to Simmons – Greer High School Class of 1963. He was the valedictorian, served a tour in the U.S. Army
and after, a few stops, found his way back home. The folks in this photo? No, he doesn’t remember them, but believes they “still have people” in the area. Maybe one day some one will come in, see the photo and share a story. That’s one of the main reasons he started the El Campo African-American History Museum in July of 2006. “Our vision is to preserve our culture and heritage,” he said. “We have a lot of different things. Some donations, some I purchased them.” Information, photos and memorabilia from Greer and Westside schools in El Campo hold a prominent place as well as items from T.L. Pink and Wharton Training High. The museum serves as a tool to educate the young people in the community – especially African-American youth, Simmons said. But not just African-American youth, he added, “It’s for everybody. It’s knowledge and understanding of the AfricanAmerican lifestyle. Black, white, Hispanic. We all have a shared history. We’ve all have grown up together. None have been an island entirely to ourselves. “History books have been written with the African-American history omitted. This is an effort to be included. There was
an E.A. Greer School here.” Other exhibits feature assorted old agricultural and home implements including ice tongs, a sack once used in cotton picking, a butter churn, corn shucker and hand-cranked meat grinder on display as well as posters and other items portraying national events like President Obama’s inauguration and memories of Martin Luther King. Located at 609 Palacios, the 1,400 square-foot museum is open by appointment only – just call Simmons at (979) 578-9339 to arrange one. He’s generally around, he says, and welcomes all. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The museum is a non-profit organization, making any gifts tax-deductible. “We’re working now on a capital campaign to refurbish the whole situation,” he said. In addition to the displays at the African-American Museum, Simmons is currently working to develop the old E.A. Greer campus across the street into a community park. “It’s the old black school and we want to preserve it,” Simmons said. “I’d like to put in some playground equipment, seats and things. We’re trying to leave a legacy for the coming generations.” – By SHANNON CRABTREE

harton County residents have never been hesitant to answer the call to service with honors earned on virtually every one of the nation’s battlefields. Johnnie David Hutchins, a Lissie sharecropper, was the first Wharton County resident granted the Medal of Honor. The young 21-year-old sailor died Sept. 4, 1943. When already injured, he took the helm of a landing ship and maneuvered the vessel out of the path of an oncoming torpedo, saving the crew. A display honoring Hutchins as well as Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez, the county’s second Medal of Honor recipient, are on display at the Wharton County Historical Museum in Wharton. Sgt. Benavidez, of El Campo, was presented the Medal of Honor Feb. 24, 1981 in a ceremony presided over by President Ronald Reagan - 13 years after he faced the bullets of some 250 North

scaping ones everyday, consistently-choreographed routine is good for the soul and, nestled right in the heart of El Campo, one can find that escape at the Wild Hibiscus Wine Bar. Walking across the wooden bridge entrance, under majestic oaks, you inexplicably feel a transition. It’s all-of-the-sudden quieter, calmer, cooler. Then, you hear it – old blue eyes crooning ‘Fly Me To The Moon.’ Your mood is instantly transitioned and you feel like you have been transported to a faraway place. You can have a seat inside at the cozy wine bar or, if you prefer, sit out under the shady trees on the deck. Hanging from the ceiling inside are tiffany-style lamp shades and crystal chandeliers while lamp posts frame the deck outside. There’s even a chandelier hanging from one of the trees. You don’t have to be a wine expert to visit. You don’t have to know anything about wine, really. That’s where the expert staff come in, suggesting a selection of fine wines and imported beers to quench every taste.

In an effort to differentiate themselves even more from local retailers, Wild Hibiscus stocks five wines that are not available locally. “People are open to suggestions,” said Drew Tidmore, manager and half owner. “We change the menu every six months, but I have people who are already tired of what I have and ask, ‘what do you have that’s new.’” Wines are stocked from different regions of the world, and you can also find national wines, produced from grapes grown right here in Texas. One in particular is the Wedding Oak wine, produced by El Campo native, Steven Cooper with the help of other local investors. Although wine is the specialty, they also have a selection of domestic and import beers from Belgium, Germany and England to name a few. Wine and beer flights are also offered, something patrons would have to drive about an hour to find outside of El Campo. A flight consists of three varieties of beer or wine to allow the customer to sample new offerings in smaller portions. Hors d’oeuvres are available as well, but you’ll want to check the board for the day’s offerings, as new items are added regularly. Anything from cheese trays to chips and salsa to three-cheese toasted flat bread are among the regular offerings. The Wild Hibiscus is most interested in catering to the needs of their customers, Tidmore said. For those who are planning a private event, such as a wedding, anniversary or party, there are several room options. For larger parties, renting the whole property is an option. “The events are really keeping us going,” Tidmore said. “We have had as many as three events in one day.” The clientele varies from business people to farmers to school teachers, Tidmore said. “Anyone who loves beer and wine and is
looking for something different.” Recently, they began offering painting classes by Wine Expressions and hold them as often as demand requires, usually on Thursday evenings. Local artist Susie Stevens teaches participants to paint different objects such as barn scenes, sunflowers and wine glasses. So how did such a place find its way to El Campo? The story begins about six years ago when Tidmore, a local wine connoisseur, was fermenting a dream. Ultimately, he envisioned growing a vineyard and owning his own winery, but felt that aspiration was beyond his reach. Instead, Tidmore set his sights on one day owning a wine bar and began his quest by starting a wine club. “I figured, for every beer-drinking farmer, there is a winedrinking wife,” Tidmore said. The El Campo Wine Club was established in 2007 and started off small, in local kitchens. Their motto: “Exploring the vast world of wines, one bottle at a time.” Over the next few years, the club ventured out to various venues and restaurants, adding a theme-based element, tying meals to wines. In 2012, Tidmore, now often referred to as “the wine guy” and “wineaux”, saw an opportunity. A house on North Mechanic Street, owned by Jessica Radley, had recently been renovated and was being used commercially. At that time, selling crafts. “It was just a perfect opportunity,” Tidmore said. He approached Radley, pitched his idea and Radley decided to give it a shot. Tidmore offered to work the first six months for free to get the bar established and Radley responded, “Good, because I don’t know anything about wine.” On Thursday, Dec. 6, the eve of the city Christmas parade, the

Wild Hibiscus Wine Bar became a reality. After six months, Tidmore and Radley became partners and since then, the business has continued to grow. “It takes dedication,” Tidmore said. “We started out with familiar names and are now trying to offer new, unheard of names.” Tidmore continues to expand the wine list, but also has aspirations to possibly expand the menu, in the event they find the right person for the kitchen. Locals who have visited the wine bar once, find it hard not to return. “It’s a great place to just stop by and have a glass of wine,” Dianne Appling said. Her husband, Michael Appling, books the company Christmas party there and she said they had to book long in advance to make sure they got the place. The Wild Hibiscus, located at 1012 N. Mechanic in El Campo, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight and offers quality wines, craft domestic and imported beers, a relaxing atmosphere either inside at the wine bar or outside on the deck, and hors d’oeuvres. If you’re looking for an escape from your everyday reality, something different, something new – stroll across the wooden bridge and immerse yourself into the unique atmosphere of the Wild Hibiscus Wine Bar.

FROM FARM TO TABLE M
ore than a decade ago, Craig and Debbie Radley opened the doors to their restaurant, Pinchers Boil’n Pot, specializing in crawfish and assorted seafood items. It’s one of the few places offering pond to plate service on some of the items at their U.S. 59 location.
AN IDEA IS BORN
The idea came about as a way to market their crawfish and Debbie came up with their eatery’s unique name – Pinchers. In the beginning, the Radleys never anticipated being in the restaurant business; they just wanted a way to market the crawfish they were raising. Prior to this time, Craig had been farming rice and ranching. As a struggling farmer in the 1980s, they had to find a way to make ends meet. “I had to do something different,” Craig said. “Farming – it was tough to make a living. We were trying to figure out a way to make a living.” So he started selling real estate while continuing with his rice farming operation. He was also head golf pro and superintendent at the El Campo Country Club. Then opportunity came knocking at their door. “I came across some real estate in Glen Flora, a crawfish farm that wouldn’t sell,” he said. “I thought ‘why not buy it myself.’” So in 1994, the couple became owners of a 20-acre crawfish farm.
GETTING INTO THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS
In an effort to assist in marketing the crawfish, they decided to open a restaurant where the product would basically go from the farm to the table to be served to customers. “We opened on March 1, 1999 in downtown El Campo,” he said. “We had a small one page menu.” That menu consisted of their farm-raised crawfish when in season, fried shrimp and catfish, étouffée and gumbo, French fries, coleslaw and
salad bar. The Radleys not only wanted to be able to market their main product, crawfish, but also be able to provide something no one else in town did. “We tried to stay unique with our menu ... fried pickles, no one had them, poorboys and so forth,” Craig said. “It was very productive.”
EXPANDING THE FARM
With the need for expansion, they decided to move the farming operation to their 100-acre rice farm in the Blue Creek area. “There was no room for expansion at the Glen Flora location,” he said. The massive ponds require a lot of water. And there were some less productive years due to weather conditions. But all in all, the operation has proved to be a good investment, he said. “We had to fill the 100 acres with water all at one time, and because of the drought, there were three to five years that were really bad. The biggest expense is water, especially during the drought.”
MAKING THE MOVE
Pinchers did very well at its downtown location, but as a couple of competitors with similar menus came to town, the Radleys decided to move to the freeway. “After opening in town, there became too much competition,” Craig said. “We were the only seafood restaurant in town until a couple of other restaurants came to town, but we were serving crawfish.” In 2004, the Radleys purchased the former Kimbos, which was a gas station/convenience store east of El Campo on U.S. 59. They proceeded to build the restaurant next to Kimbos. “We moved to the highway November 2004 and opened May 15, 2005,” Craig said.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Clara Schulze, who has been with them from day one, does the ma-
E
jority of the cooking. The Radleys agree she is a great asset to their business. Charles Solomon is the chief cook during the evening shift. “We hired Clara Schulze and she has been with us since the beginning and has never left us,” Debbie said. “I love cooking,” Schulze said. Behind the scenes, Schulze and her assistant, Alice Byrd, make everything from scratch, even the bread pudding laced with caramel rum sauce. From the secret-seasoned grilled fish, to fried seafood, alligator and frog legs or the boiled crawfish, when in season, these ladies know what it takes to please their customers. According to Schulze, the most popular item on the menu is her tilapia with étouffée topped off with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. The fish fillet can be either grilled or blackened. The cooks’ typical day starts around 8:30 a.m. Some of the preparation is done the day before, or during mid-afternoon before the evening crowd starts to arrive.

A cleaner community is our business. A greener environment is our goal.
FAMILY-OWNED
Pinchers is a family-owned and operated business. The Radleys’ three sons, Cody, Cade and Coy, have all have been involved in the restaurant end of the business as well as helping on the crawfish farm. When they opened Pinchers in 1999, Cody was a senior, Cade was eight and Coy was six years old, Debbie recalled. As they got older, they too became involved in the business. “Being waitstaff builds character,” she said. Debbie’s mother, Dorothy Wolfe, is involved in almost every aspect of the restaurant. “She is a God-send,” Craig said. “We could not have done this without her,” Debbie added. Dorothy has done everything from being a hostess to cooking. She does the books and errands on a daily basis, too. Looking back, the Radleys could have done something different that didn’t involve so much time and stress, but Craig admits, “the business has been wonderful for supporting our family.”

Sylvister Garibaldi of Wharton and mom Aralia Garcia of El Campo are regulars at Pinchers and they prefer eating in the outdoor area near the pond because it is a peaceful setting. And, of course, they love the food. “I eat here often. The service is good,” Garibaldi said. “My favorite is the fried alligator.” Garibaldi gives Pinchers a 10 out of 10 rating. “They have the best seafood in the area,” he said. Garcia prefers ordering fried shrimp or crawfish. “The food is real good,” Garcia said. “I like coming here a lot.” Pinchers is open Wednesday through Sunday and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. “Doors open at 11 a.m. and close when the last customer leaves,” Debbie said. Even though their business is well established, it still keeps the Radleys busy. “This is real time consuming,” Debbie said. “If we are not here, we are calling here. We live it 24-7.” The traffic at Pinchers is mostly travelers. “Our main source of customers is vacationers or those going down to the coast or people going to Mexico,” Craig said. “We have a lot of loyal customers from El Campo and we rely on billboards and other advertising with newspaper.” On average, they serve 100 to 300 people daily and on Fridays during Lent they serve about 400. In addition to eating inside, Pinchers has an outdoor area for dining, parties and karaoke they call the Palapa Patio. Crawfish season typically runs from January or February through July. Other items on the menu are usually purchased locally. Today they have expanded their menu. When crawfish is in season, they sell it at the adjacent store. Off season, boiled crawfish is not on the menu, but they use a quality frozen product in their gumbo and étouffée. Also, alligator on the menu is purchased from Larry Janik of El Campo. “We chicken fry it (alligator),” Debbie said. “Gator is a very popular item on our menu, but the most popular is the crawfish when it is in season. And we buy the best products we can. Like the shrimp and catfish, we buy locally, like from the Palacios area. We do local buying, everything we can, as much as possible.”

Crawfish, which bury themselves in the mud and often called “mud bugs,” must be cleaned before they can be prepared for consumption, through a purging process which takes place at the pond in front of the restaurant. At one time, this process took place at the farm. Purging is a process that helps rid the crawfish of impurities in their intestinal track, such as mud and grass. Purging depends on the water temperature, Craig explained. “Crawfish are cold-blooded animals and they purge faster in warmer water,” he said. “And the warmer the winter, the better the crop too. Their metabolism is faster.” The ponds need to be dry in the heat of the summer because it is too warm. During this time, Craig said, “The mommas bury themselves in the mud. And when it starts cooling off at the end of September and October, we start filling the ponds up again. The mommas bring their babies out and the growing process begins.” But bigger is not always better. “When crawfish get really big there is less meat per pound,” he explained. “Medium to large is the most ideal size for us.”

ackyards, school yards, school bus lots, swimming pools, garages – you name it – Larry Janik has caught a gator in some strange places. “Every puddle of water in this part of Texas has an alligator,” he shared. “One came in through a doggy door into this lady’s kitchen.” Luckily for those who are not trained nor can stand the sight of anything (much less 1,000 pounds) reptilian, Janik’s team is there for all your alligator needs. Located at 3244 CR 410, Janik Alligators, LLC offers a variety of services for all things alligator and hosts over 150 in a 6-acre captive rearing pond. An estimated 6,300 eggs hatch from the farm’s 150 alligators in August or September, nearly a month after they lay their eggs. The eggs were brought up from the adult pens in wire cages that served as alligator nests. “Most of the baby alligators had become accustomed to being around humans,” Donna Janik told the Leader-News in 2012. Only about 20 percent of those eggs will survive in the wild to become adult alligators. “They are at a point where they see a person walk in the
pen and know they’re going to be fed,” she said. “My grandchildren come in and can pick them up – they’re not aggressive.” The 6-9 inch baby can grow into a 9-15 feet adult weighing up to 1,000 pounds. After years of hog hunting, Larry Janik began hunting gators in 1989. He got into the gator game full-time in 1998 when he provided nuisance control for the state. Common in rivers, swamps, marshes and bayous of the Southern United States, the American alligator can be found in or near fresh or brackish water in the eastern third of Texas. Alligators in the wild feed on mainly fish, turtles, snakes and small mammals. A hungry gator, however, will eat pets and, in extremely rare instances, humans. “People feed alligators and they become a nuisance to livestock and pets,” Janik said. “Honestly, we have more trouble dealing with the people than we do with the alligators,” he shared, boasting that while he has been bitten numerous times by (what he considers) smaller gators, he has never had a “close call.” “Every alligator is different,” he added. “You gotta read him like you would any other animal.” “Some we take alive, some we have to kill.”

Janik and his team catch approximately 500 alligators each year. The skin and meat are processed and the hides go to the tanneries, all of which are for sale. At Janik Alligators, visitors can buy a variety of leather work such as wallets, purses, belts, holsters and rifle slings and, if your home is hankering for a gator head, they sell those too. The live alligators, however, are taken to the captive rearing pond, which was opened in 2001 for apprehended gators. Although the alligator was formerly an endangered species, special permits now allow Texans to hunt, raise or possess the now protected game animal. For $1,750, you can hunt and hang an alligator to call your own. Janik Alligators offers guided hunts with a guaranteed kill of an 8-footer. The hunts are offered in September and book quickly. Tours are only available during the nesting season, generally in August. For more information about services, contact Janik Alligators at (979) 332-1463 or visit www.janikalligators.com.
