Birds fly
to NEEDVILLE EC tries to down Bluejays
By CHRIS WIMMER sports@leader-news.com
El Campo opened district play last Friday with a chaotic win over West Columbia to improve to 5-0, 1-0 and to keep the Ricebirds entrenched in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football state rankings. The Birds stayed at No. 4 for another week after beating WC 42-28. Only perennial powerhouses Argyle, Carthage and Waco La Vega are ahead of EC. But the Ricebirds remained outside the top 10 in the Texas AP poll, checking in at No. 14. EC’s dominating win over the Roughnecks featured 9 total turnovers and the emergence of transfer running back De’Andre Gibson. This week, the Birds travel to Needville for the second year in a row as a result of district realignment. Ricebird fans are forgiven if they didn’t recognize Gibson as he gashed WC for several long runs. The transfer from Sweeny totaled 30 yards on 8 carries prior to Friday. On Homecoming, he rushed for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 6 carries. “He broke on some sweeps and it was some great blocking up front, because that’s where it all starts,” EC Head Coach Wayne Condra said. Gibson’s production was in addition to 18 carries, 163 yards and 2 TDs by Nery Enriquez and 10 carries for 83 yards by quarterback Brock Brandl. Deaderick Hollaway, Enriquez and Jerric Chapman split the majority of the carries the first two weeks. Tate Fuechec and Gibson have taken on increased workloads in the last three games while Chapman remains sidelined with an injury. Jared Haller and Julian Pena provide depth to a stable of running backs that has size, speed and quickness. “Our guys relish the opportunity when they get it and they’re all eager to go,” Condra said. “When their chance comes, they’re ready to go.” On the other side of the ball, EC’s defenders have created turnovers at an (See EC, Page 2-B)

Louise will return to the field Friday night for its final tune-up before league play begins. After three home games in a row, the Hornets (0-4) were on a bye last week and will travel to Woodsboro to close their non-district schedule. The Eagles (1-4) are coming off of a 55-0 loss to Yorktown last week, but LHS Head Coach Heath Clawson warned that the score was misleading. He said Woodsboro played without 11 starters against a program that went to the Regional playoffs last year. “Last week’s score is definitely not indicative of (Woodsboro),” Clawson said. “They’re a lot better than what that shows.” The Hornets spent their bye week returning their numbers to full strength and focusing on key areas of improvement. Players with the potential to recover from nagging injuries during the time frame have done so. The offense is more confident in its knowledge of the system. “When I call something (on offense), there are no questions,” Clawson said. “They’re pretty sure of everything we’re doing and it’s showing up in the fact that we can practice faster and get more reps.” Clawson is eager to see the offensive line continue to improve and he hopes for more consistency this week. The Hornets have shown the potential to sustain drives, but have

They have scored on big plays, but have faltered at times when trying to finish long sequences. Though they’ve had trouble scoring points, they’ve proven they can
move the ball. Quarterback Colin Gonzales has 305 yards passing and is the team’s leading rushing with 191 yards. Senior standout wide receiver Carlos Garcia has accumulated 278 yards on 16 catches.
On defense, Clawson summed up the unit’s needs in two words: tackling and aggression. In previous weeks, he liked the way the players were putting themselves in the right positions to stop opposing offenses, but now they need to complete plays with solid tackGARCIA les. As for being more aggressive, he wants the defenders to “be sure of what we’re doing and not second-guessing ourselves. Just flying around and having fun.” Woodsboro has a varied offense that will use spread concepts as well as power running schemes. On defense, Clawson said the Eagles are “aggressive up front.” The Hornets will leave the friendly confines of Louise for the first time in a month as they continue to search for their first victory. “To get our first win, to gain some confidence from that, would be big for us going into district,” Clawson said. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Eagle Stadium in Woodsboro.

Lady Hornets earn 4th win in district By CHRIS WIMMER sports@leader-news.com
The Lady Hornets added another district win to their record (4-2) Friday night when they defeated Prairie Lea on the road. Louise dominated the first and second sets, but slipped up in the third before getting back on track in the fourth to take the match. LHS won the first set 25-14 and the second set 25-15. in part, by a fourth set, but were also indicative of the quality of play of the Lady Hornets in District. Lutringer accounted for 25 set assists against Prairie Lea. She also added 2 aces to her growing total. She landed 4 in back-toback games versus Shiner and Ganado. Vajdos, the team’s leading scorer, put away 29 kills while also contributing 6 aces and 2 blocks. Kori Staff was on the top of her serving game, as well, landing 6 aces to equal her 6 kills. The Lady Hornets begin their second round of District Friday night when they travel to league-leading Weimar for a 5 p.m. match.

Subvarsity Roundup Staff Reports
Ladybird JV wins over 5A Terry The Ladybird junior varsity volleyball team defeated Terry Tuesday night at Ricebird Gym. EC outlasted the Lady Rangers in set one to win 2518 and then dominated set two 25-9 to win the match. Shelby Fitts stood out on offense, finishing with 5 kills and 4 aces to go along with 3 digs. Tori Triska notched a stat in nearly every category, finishing with 3 aces, 1 block, 5 digs and 2 kills. Karsyn Russell did her work in the middle, providing 11 set assists, 5 digs and 3 kills. Abbie Farrar led the team with 12 digs and Russell, Triska, Cassidy Crowell and Hope Cunningham added 5 per player. Ladybird JV shows well in East Bernard The Ladybird junior varsity volleyball team won the Consolation bracket of the East Bernard Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a 3-1 record. EC played four games in one day and began the competition with a close loss to the EB White team: 26-24 and 25-23. After the defeat, the Ladybirds did not lose a set or a match for the rest of the tournament. They beat Boling 25-10 and 25-15 in their second match. EC next defeated the EB Maroon team 26-24 and 25-23 in
what Coach Roxanne Rodriguez described as “a back-andforth match where we couldn’t make a mistake.” The Ladybirds claimed their final victory of the tournament with a win over Columbus 25-23 and 25-19. “We have powerful serves and that’s a big asset,” Rodriguez said of her team’s highscoring abilities. Karsyn Russell stood out on defense and Tori Triska, Te’Asia Cooks and Hope Cunningham highlighted the offense. ECMS volleyball Red dominates Bay City The ECMS Red team defeated Bay City Sept. 8 in El Campo in two identical sets, 25-11 and 25-11, to open its season. Mackenzie Matlock and Georgia Priesmeyer were the high scorers on the team, accounting for 13 points and 12 points respectively. Mackenzie’s twin sister Madisyn checked in with 6 points; Charmya Shorter scored 4 points; Makenna Abke recorded 2 points and Rheanna Eide and Alanah Terrell scored 1 point each.
ECMS volleyball White edges Bay City The ECMS White team needed all three sets to defeat Bay City Sept. 8 in El Campo, but ultimately the Ladybirds prevailed. They won the first set 2520, lost the second set 25-14 and then easily took the third set 15-5 to win the match. Denaiasha Diggs led the Ladybirds with 11 points. It was a good weekend if your last name was Schulz. Several wild or inexplicable results claimed the hopes of many contestants, but three clearly rose above the pack. LSU’s last second win was reversed to a last second loss and it hurt a score of ballots. Rice’s double overtime loss to North Texas was another rough outcome for pickers. On the NFL side, Eli Manning’s interception on the Giants’ final drive ended his team’s chances of a comeback win. It also secured red marks on nearly every entry. How did the Cardinals lose to the Bills? The Cardinals supposedly have one of the best offenses and best defenses in the league and they were almost doubled up by the Bills. But two of the three winners this week were savvy enough to predict the outcome of the Arizona-Buffalo game. Roy Schulz of El Campo clearly emerged on top with 13 correct picks. No tiebreaker was needed to determine the outcome of this week’s champion. He missed Rice-North Texas, Bay-
