BEHIND THE SCENES

Autumn Love and The Rustic White Barn by JANICE WALLACE T WITTER : @BRIDAL _WISHLIST Venue Rust Manor Photography Jennifer Domenick Stylist Robin Fisher Dresses Claire Pettibone Hair Giselle Chreky Make-up Jeff Enriquez

The unbearable heat swells and smothers the breeze. Off in the distance, the worn green roof on the rustic white barn dominates the landscape. To the delight of the rustic white barn, autumn love is all around. The sun playing peek-a-boo with the clouds. The world outside is oblivious to the fuss being made inside this enchanting historic mansion. It boasts the color of robin’s egg, lofty crystal chandeliers, and a swirling spiral staircase. In a quaint dressing room, she sits patiently on the antique chair. Jeff Enriquez chooses that perfect shade of mauve to dabble on her lips. “No more red lips” he says definitively. Giselle maneuvers the model’s locks into a mod-

ern twist on the bun, a technique she picked up in London. Robin Fisher www. polishedimageandstyle.com knows for sure that those vintage shoes with the antique gold buckles will complete the look (a little flair that Editor-in-Chief Katie Martin picked up in New York City earlier this year). When harmony arrives, the preening, the primping, the touch-ups, and hair tucks cease. Bridal perfection. Her moves are effortless as she dons a wedding gown that bears the eco-opulence that is fit for a princess. She graces the rustic white barn with her presence and strikes a statuesque pose. The sound of Jennifer Domenick’s camera seizes the moment and autumn love is immortalized.

Hills Of

Africa One couple shares their once in a lifetime honeymoon in South Africa By K at i e M a r t i n

Still looking for that perfect place to have your honeymoon and yet still be sustainable? Your honeymoon should be something that will fill your heart and your minds with a lifetime of memories. We found one of the best eco-safari honeymoon specialists for African safaris – Hills of Africa. Unlike most safari companies, Hills of Africa practices sustainable tourism, which ensures that the communities honeymoon safaris visit are treated respectfully and receive the economic benefit of tourism. When you take your eco-safari with Hills of Africa you end up making a huge difference in the lives of the local people. Don’t just take our word for it – meet Meghan and Jason. We caught up with the newlyweds after their Hills of Africa honeymoon and asked them to share their own personal photos and to tell us a little bit about their experience.

20

ECO-BEAUTIFUL WEDDINGS ❘ fall 2010

eco-beautifulweddings.com

How did you find out about Hills of Africa? Friends of our parents who had just planned a trip to South Africa recommended Hills of Africa to us. I met Meredith and was so impressed. She asked me detailed questions to give us a truly personal honeymoon. She asked about our favorite trips and hotels. We asked for places not on the typical tourist agenda and not frequented by Americans. We wanted to meet people who actually lived there, if possible. Hills of Africa created a one of a kind trip. We know this because they planned a honeymoon for our friends a few months later and they had a totally different experience.

What was the deciding factor in going? We talked to two sets of friends who had traveled around the world. Both couples mentioned South Africa as one of their favorite places. Jason and I wanted a unique adventure as a way to begin this new

chapter of our life together. Once I talked to Meredith about safari and scuba diving in the Indian Ocean we couldn’t get it out of our heads. We knew we had to go. With their recommendations we choose a small inn in Capetown with trips to the Cape of Good Hope and to the wineries in Stellenbosch with an incredible tour guide they work with - Pam McOnie. Then we went to Phinda, a private game reserve in Kwazulu Natal which embraces wildlife conservation and responsible tourism. We went on walking safari for the first 6 days. We thought we would be roughing it, but we didn’t! We stayed in an incredible tent complete with down comforters and a flush toilet. The food was amazing and we saw tons of animals. We even saw a lion kill a Nyala. The South African guys on our trip told us they had never seen that! We stayed in a lodge at Phinda too which was amazing. But there was nothing like walking safari. Then we went to a beach getaway called Thonga, a 45 minute helicopter ride away (also in Kwazulu Natal). There were 12 huts

green is...

there, so only 24 people can stay there at a time. It was deserted and romantic. We went scuba diving and on the way back we were lucky to be able to jump in the water and swim with a pod of wild dolphins.

Did you learn anything on your trip? In Kwazulu Natal the resort Thonga is on a national parkland. Part of the deal was that it would be owned by the people of the Zulu village by 2012. The resort was run by white South Africans but they were training the people of the village to take over. This was an interesting dynamic that we encountered everywhere we went. This idea that these different cultures that coexisted apart from each other were now having to figure out a way to coexist together. From an outsiders’ perspective it seems so brave, yet from their perspective they often said they had no other choice. The nationwide version of this is truth and reconciliation where the South Africans acknowledged the horrible things that happened during apartheid on both sides. They chose to move forward together rather than seek retribution.

What sort of budget should a couple be saving for when considering this type of honeymoon? We spent about $13,000 for two weeks when it was all said and done. I would say $10,000-15,000, depending on how much luxury you want. We got everything we wanted and things we didn’t expect for that price. Hills of Africa worked out every single detail. We aren’t used to so much attention and pampering but it was perfect for a honeymoon.

What are some things that you do together as a married couple now to be green? Here’s what we have done so far. We buy wind energy from ConEd. We belong to a CSA and buy as much local food as we can. Jason is a weekday vegetarian for environmental reasons. We recycle as much as we can, try not to use plastic bags or plastic bottles, use air conditioning really sparingly and turn off the lights when we aren’t in the room. We drive a tiny fuel-efficient car but walk or take the subway as much as we can. Jason carries around a portable solar collector on his backpack. EBW

Congratulations to the newlyweds! If you had an interesting and green honeymoon – let us know so we can feature it by emailing us at green@eco-beautfulweddings.com. 22

London…the centre of the world for some (including me). In my short life I have seen it blossom from a rather “ungreen” city into an increasingly eco-friendly place to live and work. Politicians and companies are no longer just paying lip service to the cause and there has been a palpable shift in attitudes to decreasing one’s carbon footprint. There will always be more to do but right now I do think London is leading the way. These amazing vendors will help guide you down the right green path for your London nuptials.

More eco-friendly than a full sit down meal and far more exciting than a dull buffet, afternoon tea really does really hit the right spot. Indeed tea does taste better in a china cup!

Liv and Blushless are a strong force for a green lifestyle. Green GROOM’s guide to

LONDON by Andrew Shanahan

If you’re looking for some pampering in the capital of the UK...then the wildly popular men’s wedding website Staggered has nominated some smart options for you.

Angel Therapy Rooms This venue in Islington, North London, is a restored Victorian spa house that offers a range of bespoke, organic treatments for men, they promise to “enhance your physical and emotional wellbeing in today’s urban landscape.” Good, huh? Featuring deep tissue massage, sport massage, and more out-there treatments such as reiki. The spa house even has it’s own outdoor courtyard for a program of summer treatments.

The Dental Spa London For oral health and teeth whitening, the Dental Spa is a great choice. The clinic uses equipment designed to significantly reduce environmental damage and other damaging factors such as radiation.

Capa Hair Salon A hairdresser offering gents cut and finish but also an Aveda concept salon, which means it’s proud to offer a range of products that are 97% natural as well as eco and animal friendly..

Taylor of Old Bond Street Seems crazy to think that this gaff was established during the reign of Queen Victoria, but it does have a timeless quality to it. Taylor’s is a specialist in luxury men’s shaving gifts and fragrances, that recently has branched into a range of ecofriendly and sustainable products.

Scin Boutique Scin is a Notting Hill spa that utilizes only sustainable, natural and organic skin care products for their range of facials, massages and manicures. They also have a boutique that’s perfect for eco-conscious gifts.

I’d eat there everyday if I could and their calamari is the best in the world! • I also love Yo Sushi (yum) and all the random and super cheap Chinese places in Soho.

Having children at your wedding is a personal choice. Some couples would like to invite every niece and nephew, cousin and neighbor’s child possible. Some couples opt out of having any children at all, or only allow the flower girl and ring bearer. Kids at a wedding can be a breath of fresh air. They walk down the aisle (hopefully) as all of the guests “oohh” and “ahhh”. They are always good for a laugh and they usually love to dance and show off their stellar moves. Here are some ideas that will ensure that children are welcome at your wedding!

Casual soirée? Matching casual cotton for the ring bearer and flower girl (available at The Groovy Gator) with whimsical pinwheels will make this wedding festive. The ring bearer is wearing a paper pinwheel boutonnière and carrying a ring box made from an acrylic frame, lined with paper with a pinwheel glued to the front. Rings can sit safely in the box (made by Couture Parties). eco-beautifulweddings.com

weddingstyle Besides having a babysitter to sing songs and play “I spy” with, have some fun activities at the “kiddie table” to make it more desirable for them to sit down during speeches and toasts. Set the table to be kid friendly. Start with the place setting. A paper placemat with a doll pop up for decorating will get them in the creative mood. Once the kids are done decorating their placemat, they can move on to coloring. A few crayons or smencils bunched together tied with bakers twine, makes it so the kids have their own set, no arguing over who gets what color.

Instead of having a formal place card, tie napkins with baker’s twine and put a gift tag on it with their name. This makes it look more like a present they have to open. Use the same sticker on a cup with a straw! (Tags Created by Couture Parties)

Filling each vessel with different colored play-dough makes it more appealing. (Play-Dough created by Couture Parties)

How to make your own play-dough: • 1 cup water • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1/2 cup salt • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar • Organic Food coloring • Saucepan • 1 cup flour

Directions 1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm. 2. Remove from heat and add flour. 3. Stir, then knead until smooth. 4. Store this dough in an airtight container or a freezer bag.

Step-by-Step • Select a basket size appropriate for holding all your gift items. • Use recycled newspaper to fill the base of your basket about 1 inch from the bottom. Cover with tissue paper (in your wedding colors), creating the base color of the basket. • Add in your gift items and place the largest items in back and standing upright (you may need to tape some items down to keep them in place).

• Once you have all the items in place, take the cellophane, wrap enough around to cover the basket from top to bottom, leave about 5 inches for overlap. • Cut the cellophane, wrap it to the top and use hemp twine to tie it together. • Once held together, fold the sides of the cellophane back and tape. • Measure your ribbon and tie it around the twine, cut addition ribbon to make a bow. “Part of my goal in creating an eco-friendly tablescape was to re-purpose items. A trip to the thrift store yielded the cute yellow plates. The bistro chairs were found on Craigslist for $5 each and with a fresh coat of apple green paint, they became a fun and functional accent.” - Karine

Etsy Flair By K atie M artin

Karine from Seasons of Life Wedding and Event Planning stepped up to the Etsy Love Challenge! She created this beautiful bridal shower landscape for an approximate cost of only $75! Karine used herbs, artichokes and succulents for the table design, which are all items that can be used in cooking, baking and planting after the event. The paper flowers were created from pages of old bridal magazines. Their photographer was a caterer before taking up photography and she came up with a sustainable menu for the buffet. A big trend alert for the newly engaged bride is: You don’t have to wear white or ivory! Brides have been wearing colored gowns for centuries . White gowns are thought of as “traditional”, but in reality the idea of a white wedding gown started in 1840 when Queen Victoria of England married Prince Albert. It wasn’t really until after World War II that brides fully embraced the white dress and the idea of wearing the dress only once. Why not wear a gown that is eco-friendly, your favorite color and one that you can wear again? We choose these three lovely bridal gowns and found the best accessories and décor to go with them. Finding that perfect dress, could mean dreaming in color!

Something Blue

By K atie M artin P H OTO G R A P H Y by J ennifer d o menick

It’s that time of year again! Your significant other is probably thinking it’s about time to pop the question. A large percentage (some say between 35-45% of the world – depending on the survey) of couples get engaged between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. So now is the time to drop subtle hints about what you want for your ring! A fabulous blue topaz can be your lifetime of “Something Blue”. Choosing a colored gemstone instead of a traditional diamond does not mean sacrifice –it means being different and shows that you are unique! Check out our two favorite designers for something blue and a little something extra!

Rose gold ring with white topaz and diamonds ($1,800). Accompanying necklace with a floating 7 carat white topaz with diamonds ($4,150).

Designer Chrisine Mighnon also uses 100% recycled metals and invests a portion of her proceeds to charity. Her Clean Water Ring and Necklace For Charity are made of 100% recycled gold and blue topaz. With the purchase of the ring or necklace, 10% of your purchase will go towards providing safe drinking water to people in developing nations. $940 for the set. The Pebble Earrings are made from faceted sky blue topaz with handmade organic gold pebbles ($120.00 ).

Traditionalist? Too afraid to go blue but can’t stand the thought of possibly buying conflict diamonds? Try white topaz! A superb option for a conflict free gemstone is the white topaz. You can get the biggest bang for your buck while keeping with the white stone tradition without the faux look of rhinestones. These beautiful white topaz options from Alberto Parada are swoon worthy!

TheofRhythm love Def Leppard’s Lead Guitarist Phil Collen & Helen Simmons 7.16.2010 Photography by Ash Newell and Kerika Fields Phil and Helen reconnected (after they met very briefly in 2008) in the summer of 2009 during Def Leppard’s Sparkle Lounge tour. From that second meeting onward – they knew something amazing was about to happen. Just two days after reconnecting, Phil asked Helen for “7 minutes” of her time. In those 7 minutes, Phil told her his entire life devoid of “Rockstar Rheteric”. He opened up about his past to the present. He believed through all of his life experiences he had finally found his life partner…Helen. Those 7 minutes confirmed to Helen that Phil was her soulmate and six weeks later on August 12th, 2009 Phil asked her to marry him in West Palm Beach, Florida. Their wedding was filled with eco-friendly elements. As Phil is an active vegan, their vegan menu was designed by the Ritz Carlton’s chef Ryan Artim and completed by Pastry Chefs Henry Ling and Frederic Barasse. Helen’s amazing gown was designed by eco-chic Adele Wechler. Phil’s suit and their wedding rings were eco-friendly as well. The star couple also opted for a paperless option for invitations and a small guest list. We hope more green celebrities will follow Phil and Helen’s example! Congratulations Phil and Helen – we can’t wait to see you on tour in 2011!

Their rings were custom designed by a local Caribbean Designer with a beautiful compass design. Instead of a controversial diamond – the bride opted for a sapphire surrounded by diamonds from their grandmothers.

Lauren and Ken are true greenies! They have been living on their sailboat in the Caribbean for the past 6 years (desalinating their own water and eating only local foods)! They came home to Ken’s family home on Folly Beach, SC for their intimate wedding. Lauren slipped into her dress and threw on nothing more than mascara and lip gloss and then walked to the beach for her ceremony. Instead of renting and hauling chairs to and from the beach, the family all met on the beach and stood around the couple as they said their vows. Afterwards, the

family decorated the backyard of their beach cottage, Folly Breeze, with their own lanterns and hung the branches of the old oak tree with paper lanterns and twinkle lights. The only thing rented were the handful of tables and chairs. Everything else was borrowed or the family’s. Lauren and her sister’s bouquet came from a local island florist who used only what she had in the shop that day. The guests ate and danced to a family friend’s two-man band and then left with hand-made natural soap as favors.

Brooke and Kevin’s wedding was sustainable with sentimental flair. We have never seen a wedding so full of personal touches and we adore the fact that Brooke’s mom was the florist and helped to coordinate the day! All of their paper products were used with PCW (post-consumer waste) products. They started their weekend with the Durham Bulls for a night filled with fun and fireworks. Their reception site pavilion was made of reclaimed timbers and the original cobblestones of Main Street in Raleigh (the venue also “I purchased an Amsale sample dress and had it tailored to fit, instead of having a new one made. Which brings me to the Wedding Registry, and why I think you should consider treating the linens on your registry with the same importance as you do your china, silver, or any other items you intend to treasure and keep for a very long time. I’d also like to encourage you to think green when choosing the linens, not only for the benefit of the environment, but also for the health of your home environment.

Traditionally, there are two important parts to evaluating the quality of bed linens. The first, the Thread Count, refers to the number of threads both vertical and horizontal on a one-inch square of fabric. Thread count varies based on the type of fabric, and the quality of the fiber. The three most common cotton fibers are: Egyptian Cotton is widely accepted as the highest quality cotton fiber. The high quality is a result of the growing and harvesting conditions. True Egyptian Cotton is grown on the fertile banks of the Nile, and hand harvested which results in better fiber than when cotton is eco-beautifulweddings.com

Textiles in a linen-weave texture, even when made of cotton, hemp and other non-flax fibers are also loosely referred to as “linen”. The collective term “linens” is still often used generically to describe a class of woven and even knitted bed, bath, table and kitchen textiles. The name “linens” is retained because traditionally, linen was used for many of these items.

MAKE YOUR BED HEALTHY Besides going organic, there are a few other things you can do to make your bed a healthier place to lay your head: • Covers on all of your mattresses and pillows • Never sweep or “dust” floors or hard surfaces. This will merely circulate the dust throughout the house. Instead use damp cloths that will attract and hold the dust you’re collecting. • Keep your home humidity levels low. Use a dehumidifier to keep your air below 50% humidity. Dust mites have a

machine harvested. But be careful, sometimes sheets may only contain a very small percentage of Egyptian Cotton. Only buy 100% Egyptian Cotton. Combed Cotton is an extremely soft version of cotton where shorter fibers and impurities are manually removed and the cotton fibers are specially treated before they are spun into yarn. As a general rule, combed cotton is slightly more expensive than conventional cotton. Supima or Pima cotton is named after Pima County in southern Arizona, the location of the experimental farm on which a variation of Egyptian cotton was developed in the early 1900s. It is extremely soft and durable, but accounts for only 3% of US annual cotton production,

hard time surviving in dry air. • Wash bedding weekly and use water at about 130° F, to kill any dust mites that may be on your sheets. Dry your bedding on high heat as well.

mainly cultivated in San Joaquin Valley, California. But none of these categories matter when the cotton is grown using massive amounts of pesticides. And the thread count won’t tell you that the fabric itself is coated with toxic chemical flame retardants, making the sheets nonbreathable, and breeding grounds for dust mites, mold, and off-gassing. There are some high-quality, healthy alternatives now available. Here is what you should be looking for: Bamboo sheets have a soft and silky feel that rivals the most expensive Egyptian Cotton sheets. Plus it is a biodegradable textile material, and can be grown with-

out the same harmful pesticides as cotton. Organic Cotton of course is increasingly popular, and as demand grows so does the availability of high-quality organic linens. But a note of precaution—the organic label only refers to the growing conditions—not to the finished product or any chemicals that might be used, such as flame retardants. Again, check the percentage of Cotton even in organic products, 100% cotton will give you a breathable product that will result in a healthier bed. If this is your first encounter with me you may not be familiar with my style-motto: Quality, not Quantity.

This is especially true for things that you literally live in every single day of your life—such as your bedding. The fact of the matter is that really good, really worthwhile bed linens are going to cost a little bit more. And I happen to think they are worth every penny. But, this doesn’t mean when you add bedding to your wedding registry that you necessarily have to ask for a complete set—if you are going to go for the best quality, and I hope, chose a sustainable option, then just register for separate pieces—pillow cases, top sheet, bottom sheet, etc. Chances are, you will end up with a complete set of brand new, healthy, quality bed linens—helping you both sleep soundly for many, many years to come. THE BAD LIST The mattresses and bed linens in most stores actually contain fire retardants that are also hazardous chemicals. If you aren’t going to go completely organic, here are three chemicals you should try to avoid:

mattress basics Traditional mattresses often contain harmful chemicals that are linked to a whole host of health problems. Consider making the switch to an organic mattress. Here are the benefits:

Wool and Cotton Natural fibers allow moisture to move away from the body during sleep and evaporate, unlike traditional mattresses that can hold moisture in, contributing to toxic build up, mold, and dust mites.

Natural Latex Rubber Have pets? This is a great option because it prevents dust mites and pet dander. It is extremely durable, and completely free of toxic chemicals.

• pentaBDE – a fire retardant that has been banned in European countries, and in the state of California since 2006 due to its link to with behavioral disorders. • DEHP – a phthalate that is has been banned in most European countries for several years • Polyurethane Foam – a chemically treated substance used as a flame retardant.
