writing, spring has just arrived, the sun is shining and the warmth has returned. We have left behind us a long, cold and dark period but we are now going towards brighter times. Just as April often brings changeable and difficult to forecast weather, the ups and downs we have seen in the market conditions during the last six months have been difficult to interpret. Periods of stagnation have been followed by good demand that then fades away before accelerating again. This has resulted in challenges for our organisation. A WISE MAN once said, ”You cannot brake
going uphill”. I think there is a great deal of truth in this. As a single company, one cannot do much about the general market conditions, but in uncertain times, it is necessary to brake and press on the accelerator simultaneously. For this reason, because we have been forced to adjust the organisation to the market conditions, we have chosen at Eco Log to continue with the focus on, and investment in, prioritised areas. Design and marketing have been given new resources and aftermarket is expanding steadily with new service providers. All of this so we can build on and further improve the productivity, quality and service for our customers. You can read more about this, and our investments in export markets, further on in the magazine.
entire Swedish market, we are currently at levels corresponding to 2009’s. However, even if the number of machines sold in Sweden has dropped and the competition is stiff, Eco Log has succeeded in keeping its market share, and then some, for both harvesters and forwarders. This is naturally very pleasing for us and it is with great humility that we thank our customers for their continuing confidence. At Eco Log, we are building on the traditions of those who have been with us longer and, together with a stable ownership, fantastically committed and motivated staff as well as skilled partners, we have decided to roll up our sleeves and make sure we continue to deliver profitable solutions to our customers for a long time in the future.

Eco Log – harvesters and forwarders for forestry operations
Torgeir Pedersen and his two machine drivers
After many years with forwarders, it was time for a harvester The Norwegian contractor, Torgeir Pedersen, has owned many Eco Log forwarders but no harvester – until now; and then, thanks to his Swedish driver, Karl-Johan Nilsson. ”Kalle was basically allowed to choose the machine, and he chose an Eco Log 580D,” says Torgeir. Eco Log’s presence on the Norwegian market has been limited so far. A couple of major makes dominate but, according to Torgeir Pedersen, the interest in the Swedish make has increased in his own region, which stretches from Oslo, up through Nordmarken, to Holmenkollen. ”Since we got our harvester, we have had many visits from other contractors who are curious about the machine. I think Eco Log has earned a good reputation in recent years and, combined with the Log Max unit, which must be one of the best in the world, they are producing excellent machines,” says Torgeir. VARIED LANDSCAPE
Torgeir is one of three owners of the company Forest Nord A/S. They work primarily for a private forest owner, one of Norway’s largest with around 500,000 hectares forest. 4
The stands vary greatly. Around Oslo, the land is rather flat, but set your course northwards and it becomes significantly hillier. ”The Eco Log harvester manages to operate in just about any terrain whatsoever thanks to the pendulum arm system and the ground clearance. Being able to use the harvester to pull the timber out, so the forwarder does not need to operate on poor ground, is also practical,” says Torgeir. MANY ADVANTAGES
For Kalle, the Swede, who has worked in Norway for three years now, moving from other makes to Eco Log, was a rather simple adjustment. ”The pendulum arm system was rather unfamiliar at the start, but getting to grips with the machine went faster than I thought it
would. There are very many advantages, apart from the pendulum arms; for example, the crane sits to one side, giving better visibility, and all the buttons are on the control levers.” Around Oslo, there are many young Swedes who have come to work and, according to Kalle, the working conditions are better than at home. ”For the first, we never work shifts and that creates a calmer work pace.” MANY FORWARDERS
Torgeir Pedersen has kept up with Eco Log’s development ever since the SkogsJan era and onwards where it concerns forwarders. In the Caterpillar era, Torgeir often had opinions about the machines, which Eco Log took note of in its development work. This is a tradition that still applies and it is appreciated by many contractors. ”I only buy Eco Log because they always function extremely well in the terrain where we work. They are strong machines that withstand the winters with extreme cold and masses of snow. The way things are looking, there may be more harvesters in the future, but I am absolutely certain that the next forwarder will also be an Eco Log!”
Eco Log – harvesters and forwarders for forestry operations
We lift the veil at Elmia Wood When the Log Max Group was sold off, with the exception of Eco Log, the situation changed for one of the market’s most advanced forestry machines. Now, the Eco Log of tomorrow is here. Eco Log has a long history. The name has been around for almost ten years. The factory in Söderhamn, which was set up by Kockum, has been producing forestry machines since 1965. The technical basis of today’s machines is Skogsjan’s “Spindle Machine” from 1986. The spindle machine, with its hydraulic wheel motors and rocker arms, revolutionised the way people made their way through the
forest. Eco Log itself was born when the Log Max Group acquired the forestry machine manufacturing facility in Söderhamn from Caterpillar in 2004. That’s one side of the story. The other side involves the Log Max harvesting head, which for a long time has been considered one of the best in the world. Log Max’s strongest footholds have always been outside the Nordic region. Breaking into the Nordic market is tough, as manufacturers of forestry machines there also produce their own harvesting heads. The acquisition of Eco Log gave Log Max an entrance ticket to the market. The development of both harvesting heads and machines went hand in hand until November 2012, when the Log Max Group was sold off, with the exception of Eco Log. The buyer was Komatsu Forest. At first glance, this deal might appear illogical. But there are bigger plans. The sale
of Log Max has given its owners the muscle required to continue to develop Eco Log into the world’s most productive forestry machines, with the Log Max harvesting head as standard. Eco Log has always worked closely with its customers, and this proximity will increase. The foundations of the Eco Log of tomorrow are being laid by listening to and conducting a dialogue with the people who have the forest as their workplace. Elmia Wood 2013 will see the première of the new Eco Log. This is where we will unveil a totally new kind of forestry machine. Eco Log will also set out its direction with a declaration of intent:
Forestry of tomorrow. When you visit us on Stand 826, it will become clear what the Forestry of Tomorrow means for you.

Klas Johansson, Aseda Construction is pleased with its Eco Log 590D Blue.
>>>
The legal requirement for new machines to use the AdBlue additive has made, at the same time, machines equipped with a urea tank even more fuel-efficient. Klas Johansson, Åseda Skogsentreprenad, has had an Eco Log 590D Blue for several months and has already had time to measure the good effects. ”We are saving roughly four-five litres an hour compared with the previous machine,” Klas says. Apart from measuring the fuel consumption, Åseda Skogsentreprenad has decided to assure the quality of their new machine with the help of VMF (Virkesmätarföreningen). For Klas Johansson, this has been an excellent tool for guaranteeing that all parties receive what they want: The sawmill gets the right products, the forest owner gets the right price and the contractor has the right information for the invoice. Instead of the operator having to decide which trees should be measured, the computer makes a random choice where the operator can only deny five trees in one hundred. As a result, two- three stems can be measured and checked per shift. Before obtaining approval, you have to operate on one month’s probation. Afterwards, the random inspections, by VMF’s field auditor who checks everything is okay, are made less often. The measurement results are then sent to SDC, together with the production files. VMF compiles all of the data and sends a weekly report to the machine’s owner. ”Our new Eco Log is very good at measuring the diameter. According to VMF 8
Syd, which was involved during the commissioning, they have never seen such excellent measurement results before,” says Klas. SIMPLE PROCESS
When it comes to the fuel consumption, Klas makes reservations for the fact that the previous unit was more powerful and perhaps consumed more diesel, but otherwise there is a difference of approx. 4-5 litres per hour or 0.1 l per m3 fub. ”If the cost for AdBlue is deducted, we are talking about a saving of approx. SEK 75,000 per year and obviously that is a very large saving,” Klas saves. For Klas Johansson, his partner Anders Kaveren and their seven employees, neither has the addition of AdBlue resulted in any great difficulties. The tank is filled when they fill up with diesel. ”We are, you see, lucky that there is an AdBlue pump at our ordinary filling station, so filling up doesn’t take any more time. Moreover, it is not bad when something is good for both the environment and the finances,” Klas says.
MORE IMPROVEMENTS
Åseda Skogsentreprenad were also involved in the design of some parts in the JPS R 5500 saw unit, which now sits on two of Åseda Skogsentreprenad’s five harvesters. Because it runs smoothly and saws quickly, this has also had some significance for the fuel consumption. Åseda Skogsentreprenad is very satisfied generally speaking with its three Eco Log machines, not least because of the improvements that have been made to the 590D Blue. ”The new step has been given a stronger design and it now functions excellently both for tool and spare part storage and for walking on. Another advantage is the placing of the exhaust muffler on the outside of the machine, which creates extra space when servicing and repairs need to be done. In the past, it took several hours just to remove parts to reach the valves, which are adjusted a couple of times per year. It now takes half an hour at the most and it is saving us thousands every time.”

Eco Log’s most southerly service provider, Ribax in
Oskar Bringevik
Nävlinge, northwest of Kristianstad, Sweden, has extended its premises by a further 430 square metres to a total workshop area of 650 square metres along with a shop for spare parts and accessories. ”We now have space for four machines in the new section and one in the old,” says Oskar Bringevik, joint owner.
By building out the garage and build a store hoping Ribax on more Eco Log-customers.
Ribax investment is providing increased service In 2006, Ribax became a service provider for Eco Log. Not 2006 AD, but rather as Oskar says, 2006 after Gudrun. Gudrun was the name of the storm, which devastated enormous areas of forest, including in Ribax’s work area, which stretches some hundred kilometres in every directions, including Bornholm, Denmark, in the southeast. The company employs five people, three mechanics, one in spare parts and an economist. Recently, Erik Furuhäll has also gone in as a joint owner. ”At the moment, there is as we all know something of a recession, but when things recover we have the capacity to take on more people,” says Oskar. POSITIVE REACTIONS
Over the years, the number of machine owners has increased successively and, according to Oskar, there is great interest in
Eco Log. At the moment, Ribax services about 25 machines, a figure that will probably increase with the extension of the workshop. ”We are already noticing how our existing customers are reasoning. For them, having a stable service provider is unbelievably important. The fact we are investing in extending the premises gives a positive signal outwards.” STRONG OVERHEAD CRANES
The new workshop section has been equipped with, among other things, double radio controlled, 8-ton, overhead cranes. Among other things, the lifting capacity allows differentials to be replaced because the entire machine can now be raised and the wheel unit rolled out. ”The overhead cranes are also used regularly as an aid for lighter lifts to save the staff ’s backs. Then there is also the question of
safety, the ability to fix certain machine components, for example the crane, so we can work without any risk of injury,” says Oskar. NEW SHOP
The completely new shop, on 70 square metres, relieves the existing stores and it provides an attractive sales area for products and accessories. In principle, it is unprofitable to hold to large a stock, but by adapting the stock holding to each separate machine, most things are available plus a little more for collection or order. ”We know how important it is to get parts quickly when necessary, for this reason we want to keep this level of service for our customers,” says Oskar.

Eco Log – harvesters and forwarders for forestry operations
Holmen Skog breaks a long trend and chooses Eco Log
Holmen Skog harvesting group in Lycksele have chosen an Eco Log for strength and stability. Here Tomas Sjöberg just gone on his shift.
One of Holmen Skog’s work teams has broken a long trend of forestry machine makes and chosen an Eco Log 560 D. ”The fantastic operator environment and the pendulum arm system were powerful arguments,” says Tomas Sjöberg, machine operator.
Holmen Skog operates fifteen machine teams across Sweden. One of them is based in Lycksele, where Holmen owns a lot of forest in the northern, mountainous parts of the municipality. Highland dominates here, uphill and down dale, steep ravines and stony ground. Final cutting in metre-deep snow, in other words, demands a rather large machine, while it must fall in the limits for thinning and ground damage requirements. ”We previously had a smaller machine so, when it was time to change machine, we wished above all for a more powerful machine with a stronger harvester head,” Tomas says. According to Robert Johansson, who works centrally for Holmen Skog, the work team had a lot to say when it came to the
choice of machine. In fact, the greatest say. For Tomas Sjöberg and his workmates, they wanted to choose a machine that was suitable for both the rugged geography and met their wishes for a good and safe work environment. Prior to the selection process, they tested both an Eco Log 560D and a John Deere 1170. The technically interested team weighed up the advantages and disadvantages and decided they wanted an Eco Log. SAFE OPERATION
Several months have now passed since the machine arrived and the operators have had time to make an assessment. ”One very large difference compared with previous machines is the pendulum arm system. In the past, you sat all the time and braced yourself when operating in difficult terrain. Now you can relax in a completely different way, and rely on the levelling and ground clearance to compensate for any surface irregularities. You can travel anywhere and come back unhurt,” says Tomas. One requirement from Holmen was for a harvesting head that could process several
trees at a time. It is best suited for first thinning but even during the second thinning, the Log Max 5000 does the job since it is easy to connect and disconnect. ”The engine is probably as good as on a four-wheel drive hydraulic. We think this head is much stronger than the former, plus the extra knives are more flexible,” says Tomas. UNEXPECTED ADVANTAGES
Tomas Sjöberg and the others in the work team are very satisfied with the machine and also mention a number of details that provided unexpected ’aha’ moments. ”The lighting for example, it is totally fantastic because there are lamps both under and below the boom as well as all round. Another thing, I think it would be difficult to go back to working with a crane column in front instead of the open view. It is so much easier to work with the crane to the side and the unit’s automatic system looks after most things itself. When the working day is finished, you are not finished yourself and that is appreciated,” says Tomas.

Eco Log – harvesters and forwarders for forestry operations
Increasingly modern forestry in Australia is opening the way for wheeled machines Recently, an Eco Log 594C was commissioned and now one of Australia’s most well-known forestry contractors has invested in an Eco Log 590D Blue. ”Improved forestry techniques and new demands from the sawmills will favour our wheeled machines, ” says Johan Jaktman, Scandinavian Forestry & Engineering.
OUTDATED METHODS
Forestry in Australia doesn’t resemble that in Sweden. According to Johan, the industry is still in its infancy and the methods are often old-fashioned and conservative. Most of the forests are well managed but in the past, a lot of forest was planted and then left to stand without intermediate thinning until it was
time for final cut. ”In some places, the forest looks dreadful but there is still no tradition, for example, of making use of energy forestry here and many initiatives for improved forestry are counteracted by the green movement. There is surely not another country in the world where green activists demonstrate outside conferences where discussions are being held on renewable energy!” ONE MACHINE FOR EVERYTHING
Even on the machine side, the forestry industry has looked the same ever since machines replaced the chainsaw. Some types of stand require heavy units, but they are also used for final cut of weaker timber. Today, they are talking about ”horses for courses”, that is to say, adapting the machines to the environment, and here, Eco Log also enters the picture. ”The enormous tracked machines in use are both clumsy and drink fuel, up to 30 litre per hour, compared with 15 – 18 litre for an Eco Log. No one has bothered before about the fuel consumption, but with the considera-

Australia is still a rather modest market for Eco Log, with twelve machines in total across the countries enormous forested regions. Nor, is Johan Jaktman´s work area to be sneezed at. He is based in Tumut, nearly 200 km west of Canberra, and travels through a district roughly twice as large as Europe. Scandinavian Forestry & Engineering is both service provider and sales contact for Eco Log. Normally, they also look after the commissioning of new machines, but this time two engineers from Söderhamn travelled out to hold a more detailed operator course. ”It is good for the customer to receive a proper run through of the machine’s sophisticated control and regulation system,” says Johan Jaktman.

ble price rises in recent years, the issue has been raised.” WHEELED ON THE RISE
When it comes to the sawmills, they have changed their processing and they now want a maximum top diameter of 55 centimetres, compared with 80 centimetres as was the norm before. The contractor in Tumbarumba, who recently invested in an Eco Log 590D Blue, has been a forerunner regarding cut-to-length and he sees the new machine as a valuable tool in addition to other machines, an important point with regards to forestry in the future. Johan Jaktman has arranged demonstrations of the machinery where people showed great interest and above all he could put to rest the myth that Eco Log is an all together too complicated machine. ”Basically, our machines are rather simply constructed, with fewer moving parts that can break. Moreover, you can reach everywhere, without having to climb. Wheeled machines are in the minority, but I believe the market will change,” says Johan.

More service providers and service centres are attracting new Eco Log owners in Finland In the last year, Finland has been enriched by several new service providers, spread geographically across the entire country. There are also plans for a central service centre. ”However good the machines are, there must be a functioning aftermarket to support the contractors,” says Mikko Laurila, CEO, Eco Log Oy.
There are quite a few differences between the Finnish and the Swedish markets. For instance, there is a strong domestic machine manufacturer here, with large market shares, but as a result of Eco Log setting up new service providers, the map will probably change. There are two service providers now in central Finland, one in the south and one in Lapland, and one in the eastern part of the country plus three service engineers from Eco Log who are daily involved with the machine owners. In Mikko Laurila’s opinion, it is not necessary to have a service provider round the corner, but if there should be a stoppage, receiving immediate help from somebody who is really knowledgeable about the machines is a necessity. ”We have also used several of these companies before for support, but now they are officially authorised service providers with an approved level of training.” ONLY FINNISH
Eco Log in Finland is trying to copy as much as possible from the Swedish organisation so it can stand on its own, independent, legs. However, there is a large need for cooperation with Söderhamn. ”Naturally, the greatest technical expertise is to be found in Sweden. One difficulty is the language, because many people here only speak Finnish and rarely English. For this reason, Keijo Mäenpää, export service engineer, who can also speak Finnish is an important link in Söderhamn,” says Mikko.

NEW SERVICE CENTRE
The strengthened aftermarket will probably result in increased sales of Eco Log’s machines. There is great interest in the make in Finland, which has impressive forestry reserves. Of the country’s approximately 340,000 square kilometres, 75 percent of the land area is covered by forest. In order to be able to meet both the existing machine owners’ needs and those of future Eco Log owners, the decision has been taken to start a service centre in the centre of the country. In which case, it should incorporate both workshop premises for service and repair and a large spare parts store and it should be aimed at both Finnish and Russian customers. ”We started to look for suitable premises last year, but because we need a ceiling height of 5-6 metres, finding the perfect premises quickly is a bit difficult. In the long run, we hope we will be able to operate an efficient and profitable facility here,” says Mikko.

New service provider in Härjedalen
We’re taking bucking to an entirely new level New system in the latest programme environment Simplified installation and service Built for StanForD 2010 I MON PÅ ELM TER 812 BERÄT IA WOOD TAR VÄLKO VI MER. MMEN !
Vidar Sjövold has just started his own business as a service provider in Sveg. This means the machine owners in the region have a new service partner to reckon with. ”The opportunity for service close by will hopefully mean more people will choose Eco Log,” says Vidar Sjövold.
After 35 years working for Komatsu, Vidar Sjövold has become self-employed with two, three, forestry machines that he services and repairs in the field. The region stretches across the whole of Härjedalen and even touches upon neighbouring Jämtland and Hälsingland. Previously, the machine owners in the region received help from service providers some distance away, for example from Ljusdal and Strömsund, so it was clearly welcome when Vidar Sjövold set up business. ”I am working mainly in the field via the service bus, but I also have the possibility to rent workshop space when needed. The plans for the future also include having my own workshop,” says Vidar.
Modern operator environment and improved bucking equals higher productivity and greater timber value. Thanks Dasa for Forester!
FUN WITH A NEW MAKE
Vidar Sjövold has long experience of forestry machines and he doesn’t think the adjustment from one make to another is any thing remarkable. He has just completed a two-day course at Eco Log in Söderhamn, which will be followed up later by more courses. ”Basically, the makes are rather similar, but learning how to maintain a new machine is interesting. Otherwise, the greatest adjustment is getting used to being self-employed, with all the paperwork that entails.”

Eco Log – harvesters and forwarders for forestry operations
Eco Log is in the starting blocks when the European market recovers The situation in the European market is still watchful. There is great interest in Eco Log’s machines, but the banks are keeping a tight rein on the finances. Even so, Eco Log’s marketing manager for export, Philippe Wion, sees some light at the end of the tunnel, not least in his home market, France. ”In just a few months we have established cooperation with several workshops that are now receiving training on Eco Log’s machine program.” Philippe Wion
Sweden is Eco Log’s largest market followed by Germany in second place. There are at least a couple hundred machines operating here, in a final cut area of approx. 13 million hectares forest. Last year was a real record year, with 20 % of the total sales, but then came the general European banking crisis that, among other things, caused financers to get cold feet. ”There are many factors governing the market. Among the difficulties, we can mention the low demand for second-hand machines as well as a reluctance to grant loans, but there are also many positive factors pointing at a recovery.”
arm system and the fact that the machines produce more relative to the fuel consumption than the competition are important factors,” says Philippe. LOWER THE MACHINE
In France, it is the pendulum arm system in particular that may decide the future for Eco Log’s sales success – not just regarding final cut but also when it comes to transport. ”There are many bridges that are too low for a rolling forestry machine. Because Eco Log’s harvester can be lowered using the pendulum arm system, there is no need for expensive special transport in order to move the machine,” says Philippe.
NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY
When the recovery arrives, Eco Log, according to Philippe Wion, has many advantages that will be crucial for the future. In Germany, nuclear power will be replaced by alternative sources of energy, where renewable forestry products are in great favour. In addition, the paper and the timber industries must have their raw materials, of course, regardless of the global economy. ”When it comes to the machines, Eco Log is in a class of its own. The unique pendulum
POSITIVE PRESS
France is a completely new market where the first priority has been to build up a service workshop so the future machine owners are guaranteed service, repairs and spare parts. There is great interest from the French contractors. Philippe Wion believes the country has the potential to become an important market, which, not least, is mirrored in the French trade journal, ”Le journal de la Mecanisation Forestiere”. The
journal has published several reports about the strong Swede that seems to be the perfect fit for the country’s forests; not least taking into consideration the hardwoods that cannot be cut just any old way. Since several Francophone countries, such as Belgium and Canada, are among Eco Log’s markets, the knowledge of languages will also be crucial for business. Also stationed in Söderhamn is Adrien Léauté, who is a French-speaking link with long experience of Eco Log. Adrien Léauté ”We got started at the end of 2012, but because there is already an effective network we can rely on, developments have moved quickly. This year, we believe in modest sales of four machines, but as soon as the economy rebounds we will be at the forefront,” says Philippe.

Mec&Tech i Ånge AB:
New service provider in Ånge
Mec&Tech i Ånge AB is a company with many strings to its bow. The owners of Eco Log machines will now benefit when the company becomes a service provider. ”Our goal is to get more machines into the region,” says Niclas Andersson. Mec&Tech’s owners, Jeans Grelsson and Niclas Andersson, have experience in everything from workshop and field service to hose manufacturing. The company is split into three parts, machining (turning, milling, welding), hydraulics workshop and a repair workshop with associated service bus. ”We have a well-dimensioned workshop with skilled staff plus a well-equipped service bus. We can even provide the customers that
bit more regarding repairs or renovation of machine parts as we have the skills for the entire process, from CAD drawing to complete product, where quality and customisation are centre stage,” says Niclas Andersson. Mec&Tech in Ånge is established in a region that until now lacked a service provider and the owners of machines in the region have had to turn to workshops some distance away. Niclas Andersson, who was a contractor himself for fifteen years, believes the agre-
Hans Larsson new sales rep Starting 1 January, Hans Larsson is a new sales rep at Eco Log. He is coming from his position as manager for the second-hand market.
Hans Larsson has long experience of forestry machines and joined Eco Log in 2005. Over the years, he has held a number of positions in marketing, including customer care and he was most recently responsible for the sales of second-hand machines for export. ”I will still keep that responsibility and work as the sales rep in the Gästrikland, Hälsingland and Uppland districts. Previously, Hans worked with customer care; a job that complements the sales rep’s role during the entire process for machine purchasing. So now, working as a sales rep feels like a natural step forwards. ”I have travelled round our customers a lot, so starting as a sales rep is to take the step full out, which feels like a positive development in my work,” says Hans Larsson.
Kjell is based in varberg Starting from 1 May, Kjell Lundkvist will be working as a contact person/marketer at Eco Log, stationed in southern Sweden.
Kjell will be the contact for customers for other makes and he will act as the sales support for our sales reps in their areas of responsibility. Kjell has long experience of other makes of forestry machines and he will be based at home in Varberg.

ement with Eco Log will mean that even more people will dare to invest in Eco Log’s machines. ”Servicing Eco Log will be a good match with the rest of our business, as we already have contacts with contractors. We also have the goal of getting more machines into the region, to give us the opportunity to grow our organisation and to be an even stronger service provider.”
New marketing job for Mats Gustafsson Since 1 December, Mats Gustafsson has been working as the manager for Eco Log’s marketing material.
Mats has worked previously in sales in Eco log’s marketing department, a job that included supporting sellers and dealers with information, planning the transport of the machines sold as well as invoicing. ”I will be combining working in the office selling and producing the marketing material,” says Mats. The new work includes producing printed matter, maintaining the website and photographing the products. ”It feels unbelievably exciting and, because the work includes so many different activities, it will never be boring,” says Mats
