Part #2 Assignment 2 Make The FIRST step is to create an 8”x14” equal segment CURVE grid in Rhino. This sounds easy but takes careful consideration to create a curve of equal point segments. The easiest way to do this is to create a 1”x1” 2D box. Then array the box into a 8”x14” grid. Next you will select the Control Point Curve icon from the toolbar, and select the top corner of the box grid and snap to all the midpoints and endpoints of the grid in the X and Y direction. Once you have both curves you will then array the curves in the X and Y direction so that you have a CURVE grid made up of equal parts. Last you will add additional tick dimension marks like the provided template for the physical model.

Next you will set up your Camera Axon view, this will be a saved view. The view you establish will be the standard view that you use to export all of your drawings into Illustrator for post production.

The SECOND step you will move your curves to the origin. To do this you will select your curves click on the left corner and type 0 enter. This will move the curves to the origin automatically.

The THIRD step you will be translating your physical model to the digital curves that you have just created. This will require you to work with the grid and measure all parts of the model and apply them to your digital surface. The curve adjustments will be transformed through control point editing by moving the points accordingly in the XYZ planes. Then you will turn off all of the X direction Curves. This will leave you with a series of DNA curve slices in the Y direction. Make sure that you are working in layers. Every step and drawing that you produce should include the grid and dimension tick marks. Output - One Axon drawing of the digital surface. With proper lineweights, and reference grid. Some notations and general dimensions should be shown.

The FOURTH step you will make a copy of your Y direction DNA slices. Once you have done this you will make a new layer and name it surface. Once the layer is made you will select your DNA slices IN ORDER and loft the curves into a surface. This will allow you to check the accuracy of your digital model with your physical model. You will then take a regular rhino rendering of the same axon view of the drawings you are making. Take it to Photoshop and cut out the background. Output - You will make a copy of the DNA slices and overlay the rendering on top of the lines to show the surface condition. It is important that you overlay the curves on top of surface. The FIFTH step you will now use go back to Rhino and make a digital Pleat fold. You will use the same X curves but instead of making a fold in the X Direction you will make a fold in the Y direction. The new pleat can influence the existing Pleat or it can fill in an unused section of the grid. The important part here is that you show the movement of the digital surface. This means that you will have to make a move in the X Y and Z direction save on a layer, make a new copy on top and then move the surface again in its final folded location. This is important to show the movement of the surface, and how you were able to re-shape the Pleat. Output - One Axon and one Top view drawing of the digital surface. With proper lineweights, and reference grid. Top view Some notations and general dimensions should be shown. Some examples of objects in motion will be provided for inspiration. Render overlay to demonstrate surface. Checkpoint will be here September 13th The SIXTH step, is to measure your new digital surface, keep your dimensions on a separate layer. Then you will transfer your new surface back to your physical surface. You may use more pins to complete your surface. It is critical that you use your grid to assist you in your translation back to the physical. Once your physical surface is accurately modeled or as close as you can manage to manipulate the cloth, you will rephotograph the Axon and Top view. Optional Drawing - you may illustrate a detail drawing like the example shown. If you choose to do so you can add more line density by lofting your X direction DNA slices into a surface, then you can use the command CONTOUR on the surface in the X and Y direction (each on a separate layer) at .25�. You can then refer to the example to add in important dimensional information and notes. Your instructors can demonstrate how to do a drawing like this and how to adjust the camera lens length to add depth to the surface. Notice all the layers of information in this drawing.

Each step of the process should be represented on the final board. It is important that you understand this as a process and how you graphically compose your work. You may also use labels and small amounts of text to describe your process. Placing unnecessary boxes around your steps is not desired, think about how you connect drawings and ideas to each other.

Drawing Working in Layers are extremely important in all of softwares that you use. Keep curves on layers. This will save time in the post production phase. When you Make 2D drawing in Rhino be sure to check the box maintain source layers. This will keep your layers and save you time from having to overlay the layers in post production. This will allow you to Select same appearance in Illustrator and edit all the lines at the same time. Your instructor can help you here. Note: You will have to set up the same view and save the view so that all of your drawings are in the same axonemetric view. Graphics : Text used should be no larger than 10pt. Font should be something that is simple, no cursive or curly fonts are ever allowed. Think Helvetica, info web, Eurostyle, League Gothic, Courier New. Also think about how you handle labels be creative here. Grid: The grid and its dimensions should be available on all drawings. The images on the assignment are quick diagrams to show process and should not be copied. You are expected to have more detail in your drawings. Other Examples of drawings will be provided for inspiration. Limits You will notice a difference in the physical material and the digital world. For instance in digital you will maintain an exact rectangle with the grid and the physical material will shrink due to the Pleat folds. This is ok and will create a restriction on the amount of fold you can produce. The idea is to have a minimal surface relief. Layout 2 - 11x17 Color (no black and white) Printed drawings showing all steps of the process. Show all information in order. Construct a grid to lay all the drawing out at the same size. A narrative statement describing the process of the assignment. The narrative statement can be distributed throughout and describe the process at each step in a notation format. Keep the text limit.
