With the first lockdown in March 2020, ECOWEEK organized the ECOWEEK 2020 48-Hour Online Challenge on May 16-17, 2020, bringing together experts in the field of Circular Economy to share their expertise and work around the globe, and to engage participants - primarily, students and young professionals - in a design challenge. Despite the online format, the event posted an opportunity to meet professionals, and network with peers from around the world. “In the current global circumstances and looking ahead to the opportunities after the COVID-19 crisis, we are looking to balance between a sustainable economy and environmental and social sustainability.” E.M. With more than 350 registrations from 20 countries, the ECOWEEK online platform offered an intense academic and professional experience, with a series of professional and scientific lectures and design workshops on circular economy in design that touched upon harvesting of materials, nanotechnology, robotics in the reuse of plastics, and open-source guidelines for sustainable living. Speakers included Jan Jongert and Lizanne dirkx of Superuse Studios (Netherlands), Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki of The New Raw (Netherlands), Konstantinos Giannakopoulos of Democritus Scientific Research Center (Greece), the Mor team (Netherlands), Benjamin Gill of BioRegional (Switzerland), and Elias Messinas of ECOWEEK. The event took place in cooperation with Archisearch, Radio Nowhere, GreenAgenda, Democritus Research Center, Materials Future, One Planet Living, B2Green, Semifind, PolyTexnikaNea, and Kataskeves Ktirion, and was hosted on YouTube and the Microsoft Teams, technically supported by Pavlos Symianakis. the EcoWEEK 2020 online challenge Workshops were based on older ECOWEEK projects aiming to try out new ideas, by re-evaluating these project and bringing them to a higher level of sustainable design based on the principles of circular economy. The workshop tried out the Value System Game, and visualized the processes of a fictional project. The participants searched for smart connections that lead to added value, such as, processes that produce waste and how they can be turned into high-quality resources.

W2: From Passive to Net-Positive

The workshop re-evaluated a private house developed in Athens, Greece in ECOWEEK 2009, proposing strategies to go beyond passive or net-zero, and reaching net positive with regard to energy, water and materials.

W3: One Planet Living: Thermokos

W1: Value System Game

The workshop was based on a project developed in Prishtina in ECOWEEK 2014, involving the building of Thermokos, an abandoned prefabricated concrete building located in the outskirts of Prishtina in a developing area, focusing on the influence of urban design in lifestyle choices.

W4: Designing a Circular Pavilion

The workshop further developed the design of a pavilion on Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki created in ECOWEEK 2015 by using the Harvest map - an open-source online materials library. The design was based on reused materials, enabling dismantling and reuse of these materials again.

W5. DEMOCRITUS: Materials Hunter

WorKSHoP team: Christina Barka, Elira Beqaj, Eleni Thaleia Chatzakou, Melike Ersoy, Avgi Hadjipetrou, Elli Litsi, Dimitra Manthou, Elina Pogka, Marije Remigius, Vicky Thivaiou, Niovi Tomou, and Aikaterini Zouridaki. The workshop explored the potential of materials through the Materials Hunter game - developed through an EU Horizon program - providing understanding of materials composition, use and improvement of recycled content, and focused on innovative design applications.

W6: Gardens that Heal & Upcycle

The workshop was based on four ECOWEEK projects from various locations - Copenhagen, Bucharest, and Agios Nikolaos, Crete - exploring circular design strategies, creating landscape design that heals and educates, and using recycled construction materials.

ECOWEEK 2020 Online

15-Year Anniversary

ECOWEEK marked its 15-year anniversary on October 2-4, 2020, in the middle of COVID-19 travel restrictions, with a 72hour online challenge on sustainable design and innovation, with lectures, design workshops and a virtual exhibition. In collaboration with EUNIC Tel Aviv and the EU delegation in Israel, ECOWEEK hosted keynote speaker French architect Nicola delon (Encore Heureux Architectes). The panels moderated by Elias Messinas, despoina Kouinoglou and Sofia Passia (ECOWEEK) included: Panel 1: ‘Preserving the planet: How to reverse the trend?’ Jonas Zukauskas and Jurga daubaraite (Lithuania), ulrike Schartner (Austria), Nikos Mantzaris (Ministry of Environment & Energy, Greece), and ran Avraham (Ministry of Environmental Protection, Israel). Panel 2: ‘Preserving the planet : Making it (more) Circular and (more) Sustainable’ Natalia Pantelidou (Municipality of Kalamaria, Greece), Nicolas Le roux (Brazil), Vivian doumpa (Greece), Maria dalkafouki (Greece), and Sophia Vyzoviti (Greece). Panel 3: ‘Preserving the planet : How to reverse the trend?’ Magor csibi (Romania), Maria carmela Frate (Italy), Andras reith (Hungary), Emese Pancsa(Hungary), Jaroslav Haimy Hyjanek (Czech Republic), and Maciej Siuda (Poland). A unique virtual exhibition and catalogue showcasing more than 200 ECOWEEK workshop projects in fifteen virtual pavilions, was coordinated by architect Pavlos Symianiakis (ECOWEEK) and created by the team of Evgenia Dickins, Mehmet Kisa, Artemis Korovesi, Foteini Masiala, Despoina-Elisavet Michaeilidi, Flaka Pergjegjaj, Çlirimtare Syla, Bijona Trakaniqi, and Anjeza Vokshi.

W1: Rethinking the urban space

WorKSHoP team: Nikolaos Alexandrou, Bogdana Ivaniv, Renata Macula, Rafaela Mpaprikidou, Flaka Pergjegjaj, Evangelia Siskaki, and George Vlachos.

The workshop analyzed an area in transformation in São Paulo, Brazil, and drafted sustainable solutions in the public space in different scales, using local materials, and addressing local needs.

W2: Under the bridge

WorKSHoP team: Oksana Boichuk, Amalia Anastasia Dimou, Triantafylia Rafaela Liana Kalaitzoglou, Katerina Mavromoustaki, Roman Snigur, and Katarzyna Szambor.

The workshop developed strategies for a multifunctional building and hotel under the bridge of the Aspern metro station in Vienna, to serve disabled persons, and how to link to the local community. With the support of the Austrian cultural Forum in Tel Aviv.

W3: InCommOn-kyklos

WorKSHoP Leaders: Vivian doumpa, olga Saliampoukou, Ilias Papagiannopoulos, Mara Angelidou, Eleni Intzidi, and Marina Koumoutsakou.

WorKSHoP team: Melia Fatsea, Eirini Giannoudi, Margarita Koulouri, Irina Stefania Scobiola, Eva Simitzi, Efthymia Stamatopoulou, and Yro Tsirozidi.

The workshop weaved together methodologies and tools from placemaking, participatory planning and community building, to revive underused outdoor spaces in the Ano Poli Thessaloniki, Greece.

W5: Restoration 360o

Studio), with Grigoris Koutropoulos and charis theocharis (BOULOUKI Team).

WorKSHoP team: Ilianna Dalgkali, Helen Kokkini, Theodora Kotsoula, Alex Pantsos, Malamateina Siaveli, and Evdoxia-Athanasia Xezonaki.

The workshop focused on transferring the experience of the restoration of a two-storey traditional stone masonry building in a village near the city of Larisa, Greece to digital medium.

W6: Circular Sanitation Models

WorKSHoP Leaders: Lena Beigel and Georg Sampl of EOOS firm.

WorKSHoP team: Shay Benish, Donjeta Leci, Sana Rosenbaum, Dafina Thaqi, and Ioanna Maria Vemmou.

The workshop addressed the environmental challenge of the global population growth and food production, proposing sanitation facilities in cities, based on circular models. Supported by the Austrian cultural Forum in Tel Aviv.

W7: Unlocking the in-between

WorKSHoP Leader: Sophia Vyzoviti.

WorKSHoP team: Evgenia Dickins, Maria-Efthymia Gkouma, Layla Moallem, and Panagiota Mousa.

Observing the growing need for open spaces during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the workshop focused on neglected openair spaces in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, through placemaking.

W8: The forest city

WorKSHoP team: Vasiliki Giatsidou, Vasilis Karmis, Ioanna-Meliti Katri, Ilektra Klodimidou, Maria-Eirini Lamprou, Moschoula Mavriki, Athanasios Petsinis, and Spyridon Skiftoylis.

The workshop was inspired by a campaign to establish 100 therapeutic gardens in Israel, and focused on a pilot site at Mental Health Center Lev Hasharon in Netanya, Israel.

W9: Samson & Delilah Eco-Beach

WorKSHoP team: Vasiliki Dimitriou, Dimitra Gravani, Katerina Papathodwraki, and Vana Papazoglou.

The workshop focused on a coastal guard pavilion by Ecochallenges, aiming to promote eco-tourism on the beachfront of the coastal city of Ashkelon, Israel, reusing materials (wood and car tires).
