NIKE PRESENTS: NIKE FROST

NIKE, INC. IS THE WORLD’S LEADING INNOVATOR IN ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR, APPAREL, EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES. “OUR MISSION: TO BRING INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION TO EVERY ATHLETE* IN THE WORLD. *IF YOU HAVE A BODY, YOU ARE AN ATHLETE.”

T H E C O M PA N Y

THE HISTORY “BEFORE THERE WAS THE SWOOSH, BEFORE THERE WAS NIKE, THERE WERE TWO VISIONARY MEN WHO PIONEERED A REVOLUTION IN ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR THAT REDEFINED THE INDUSTRY.” THESE TWO MEN WENT BY THE NAMES OF BILL BOWERMAN AND PHIL KNIGHT, AND THEY BUILT NIKE FROM THE GROUND UP. STARTING AS FOOTWEAR DISTRIBUTORS FOR TIGER SHOES, THEY STARTED THEIR FIRST COMPANY: BLUE RIBBON SPORTS. BOWERMAN QUICKLY BEGAN RIPPING APART TIGER SHOES TO TRY MAKING A SHOE THAT WAS FASTER, LIGHTER, AND MORE RUGGED. NIKE WAS BORN SOON AFTER, WHEN BOTH MEN DECIDED THAT THEIR PRODUCT DESERVED ITS OWN BRAND NAME. THE SWOOSH WAS CREATE BY A GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENT AT PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY, AND NIKE BECAME A PUBLICLY TRADED ENTITY, ENDORSED BY RUNNER STEVE PREFONTAINE. LONG STORY SHORT? THE SHOES TOOK OFF, NIKE MADE ITS MARK, AND THE REST,AS THEY SAY...

IS HISTORY.

Nike focuses on interactive design in order to draw customers in. The style aesthetic of the storefront is similar to the style aesthetic found in Nike apparel, footwear, and accessories. It is simple, bold, and generally has a dominant color scheme of black and white with pops of accent colors (often red, blue, or lime green).

Reebok and Adidas are the leading athletic wear and footwear retail brands behind Nike. As Nike grows, Reebok and Adidas follow, and they are Nike’s main competition within the global market. Although Nike is stronger both in advertising and marketing strategy, Reebok and Adidas have done something that is unusual within the athletic wear industry- they have teamed up to create a brand campaign that appeals to both the Adidas and Reebok consumer, in efforts to outgrow Nike’s target market. This cooperative effort has yielded positive results so far, by appealing to the European consumers that tend to get left behind by Nike. By marketing toward the Adidas customer, which is generally more attracted to soccer and rugby gear than most U.S. consumers, Reebok and Adidas sales are surging overseas.

THE COMPETITION

STRONG. FEARLESS. MOTIVATED. DEDICATED. THE NIKE ATHLETE IS A TRUE INDIVIDUAL. HE IS INTENSE. SHE IS UNSTOPPABLE. TOGETHER, THEY REPRESENT THE PINNACLE OF FITNESS AND ACHIEVEMENT. THEY ARE YOUNG- 18 TO 35 YEARS OLD, BUT THEY ARE RISING TO THE TOP.

The Infinite Dreamer

Our heads are no longer simply in the clouds. In this new era of fantastical technologies and superhuman heroes, our dreams have grown too large, too nebulous, to be contained on Earth. We have extended our horizons. Our heads are no longer simply in the clouds...

The Existentialist Adventurer

As athletes and thrill-seekers strive to go to further extremes than their previous rivals, action sports have become displays of the tenacity of mankind. Traditional sporting events have given way to epic explorations, like ultramarathons, mountain expeditions, and free-running. People are no longer satisfied with a nature walk; They would rather run a 24-hour endurance race through the Rockies.

Leaving Our Legacy

The world that we live in remembers and celebrates those who have managed to change it for the better. As our generations become more cerebral, we begin to question our very existence, and our purpose on the Earth. We have begun to want to leave our mark. Through various avenues, our culture strives to create a name for itself.

SOCIAL SUBTREND

We want to make history.

New developments in NASA’s deep-space propulsion systems are encouraging scientists to begin experimentations with lunar missions to Mars and beyond. These missions would be piloted by humans, which has never been achieved before.

Pedro Barros, winner of the 2013 X Games Skateboard Park event, is a national icon in his home country, Brazil. He is the youngest athlete in his field. This year, the X Games saw a massive increase in global viewing numbers, spiking by double digits.

The rise of the “viral video” has helped people, who are otherwise unknown, to achieve instant super-stardom. As it becomes easier to be “famous,” more people are striving to do something that becomes iconic and recognizable by the masses.

NIKE FROST EXTREME COLD WEATHER RUNNING SHOES

CONCEPT DESIGN

NIKE FROST Nike has yet to introduce a shoe that caters to people who excercise outdoors, year-round. The goal is to design a Nike concept shoe that supports an athlete’s foot, while gripping in snow, ice, and freezing rain, as well as any other slick surface. By combining the Nike aesthetic with heavy-duty comfort and functionality, Nike Frost meets a need that is largely ignored by most athletic-wear companies.

THE DANGERS OF RUNNING WITH HOME-MADE SCREWS MANY WINTERTIME RUNNERS SELF-ALTER THEIR RUNNING SHOES IN ORDER TO GAIN TRACTION ON SLIPPERY SURFACES DURING SNOW RUNNING SEASON. HOWEVER, SELF-MADE SHOE SCREWS CAN LEAD TO INJURIES, SUCH AS PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND FOOT FRACTURES. THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT SCREWS PLACED IN THE WRONG AREAS OF THE TREAD CAN UNBALANCE THE OVERALL SHOE BODY, AND CONTRIBUTE TO POOR RUNNING FORM.

NIKE FROST CONCEPTS

FROST

VS.

Nike Frost is designed with pavement and flat surface runners in mind. By keeping the tread minimal, with molded resin spikes and a shallow tread pattern, this shoe is meant for speed. Keeping the shoe fast and light will make snowy road runs less difficult, and less dangerous for ankles and knees.

XTERRAIN

Nike Frost XTerrain is a sturdier shoe, designed to meet the needs of wintertime trail runners and endurance athletes. The sole is slightly thicker than the original Frost concept, with a layer of three gel inserts to act as shock absorbers on uneven surfaces, which will keep the shoe body more level.

The New Nike+ Shox

NIKE FROST XTERRAIN WILL INTRODUCE THE NEW WAVE OF NIKE+ SHOX TECHNOLOGY. BY MODIFYING THE ORIGINAL DESIGN, WHICH INCORPORATES 25 MM TALL RESIN COLUMNS , THE NIKE SHOX TECHNOLOGY IS MADE SAFER AND MORE STABLE THAN BEFORE. THE NEW “SHOX” WILL BE 8-10 MM IN HEIGHT, AND WILL SPAN THE WIDTH OF THE ENTIRE SOLE IN SETS OF THREES. RATHER THAN USING A HARD, HOLLOW RESIN, IMPACT GEL WILL BE USED, WHICH HAS A SIMILAR CONSISTENCY TO TRADITIONAL SILICONE GELS USED IN THE INNER SOLES OF MANY RUNNING SHOES. BY ADDING THIS “SPONGY, SPRINGY” LAYER OF IMPACT GEL BETWEEN THE UPPER SHOE BODY AND THE SHOE SOLE, NIKE WILL INCREASE UPPER FOOT AND ANKLE STABILITY FOR RUNNERS WHO ARE OFTEN RUNNING ON UNEVEN SURFACES. WHEN THE SOLE STRIKES AN OBSTACLE, THE GEL WILL ABSORB MOST OF THE IMPACT, RATHER THAN THE ENTIRE SHOE OR FOOT.
