Brand New Books and Resources The Church Year in Limericks
Vox Humana
Christopher M. Brunelle “The Church Year in Limericks is the result of my desire to start choir rehearsals in a new way. Some choir directors simply launch in, others start with an announcement or a short prayer; I wanted to find something that would engage the choir’s attention, provide a comment on the day’s music or the week’s activities, and set a creative challenge for myself. Like an Advent calendar or a box of chocolates, The Church Year in Limericks is not meant to be enjoyed all at once. Each stanza exists on its own, and reading the entire collection straight through diminishes the individuality of its separate parts. Think of this book instead as a sort of hymnal, in which all the hymns happen to be written in the same meter but each one serves a different purpose in worship: contemplation, inspiration, insight, comfort, joy. Yes, there is perhaps a higher quotient of lively word play here than in a regular hymnal, but that’s all the more reason to appreciate each limerick for itself.” —Christopher M. Brunelle Paperback. 98 pages.

Let Praises Ring, Volume 3
Essays about the World of the Pipe Organ and Those Who Play It Haig Mardirosian Vox Humana was veteran organist Haig Mardirosian’s column in THE AMERICAN ORGANIST, the official journal of the American Guild of Organists as well as the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America, which ran monthly for exactly a decade. Appearing in an annotated collection for the first time here, Mardirosian creates an image encompassing both the breadth and depth of the instrument and profession through humor, memory, business, liturgy, and, of course, artistry. This reflection of the organ and those who play it is an essential read for those searching for perspective or new ideas, as well as those looking for understanding, nostalgia, or a bit of humor. All Await
SATB Chorus and Organ All Await was commissioned by Trinity Presbyterian Church, Berwyn, Pennsylvania, in celebration of the church’s 150th anniversary. Nancy Gifford was asked to compose a celebratory piece for this occasion based on an Advent theme. The text was inspired by a fourth-century hymn of St. Ambrose of Milan, Veni, Redemptor gentium. In this context, All Await echoes elements of traditional western sacred music while using today’s language. Repetition and reinvention of these musical ideas follow, with marked contrasts in texture, dynamics, articulation, and expression. Short organ interludes occur throughout the piece, introducing new sections of choral music. This work ends with a short coda, closing with the words “All await,” sung by the chorus three times and answered by the organ. Duration: 3:30 Moderately Easy

Following the tragic loss of their infant daughter, Elena, at the age of one month, Kurt commissioned this work for chorus and guitar to offer his friends the gift of something lasting in the face of impermanence. As requested, I incorporated the Catalan carol, El Noi de la Mare, which is also famous as a guitar solo. Three Pieces for Chanukah Chorus unaccompanied Published in 2003, Three Pieces for Chanukah is not so much a set of arrangements of familiar words and tunes than it is a set of original compositions based on them. The first two settings feature jazz-influenced, classical harmonic and melodic treatment of the tunes. The third setting is extremely upbeat; it is composed in a straight funk style, albeit contrapuntal. The front matter to each edition features program notes, a pronunciation guide for the Hebrew words and the Hebrew and English texts.
1. Oh, Chanukah/Y’mei hachanukah This setting of Oh, Chanukah consists of a verse in English and a verse in Hebrew. Duration: 3:15 Medium

As the title suggests, Funky Dreidl revisits the melody of I Had a Little Dreidl in an 80’s funk style. The four Hebrew letters on the dreidl (Nun, Gimmel, Hei, and Shin) are generally reinterpreted for Chanukah as “Neis gadol hayah sham” (a great miracle happened here). That Hebrew phrase recurs throughout the piece as bookends around the traditional English text. Duration: 3:30 Medium

A Whitman Triptych
Prayer at Winter Solstice
I. O Setting Sun
TTBB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied Dana Gioia’s prayer in the manner of The Beatitudes touches upon some uncommon ideas for recepients of blessings. Robert Schuneman’s setting for male chorus is mostly homophonic and hymn-like, but it also includes passages that are chant-like and polyphonic with thinner choral textures for the sake of contrast. Each blessing receives its own musical treatment and has its own mood. Duration: 3:40 Medium
Baritone Solo, SATB Chorus unaccompanied “Based on a text adapted from Walt Whitman’s much longer poem Song at Sunset... The baritone soloist acts as narrator, singing noble recitatives praising the sun and the hour of its setting, supported by commentaries in the chorus. A central section is fast and rhythmic with many changing time signatures. After a return of the baritone soloist, the final section’s music is both serene and reverent, as ‘Nature continues, glory continues; O setting sun!’”—David Conte. Duration: 5:42 Moderately Difficult

II. What Is the Grass? Tenor Solo, SATB Chorus unaccompanied “An adaptation of a much longer poem...my musical setting follows Whitman’s exploration: first taking a child’s point of view, expressed with lilting melodies set in a lively compound meter. Then, the entry of the tenor soloist indicates a change of mood to the serious. Next, the first mood returns, leading to a climax on the words ‘And led forward life…,’ set in nine-part harmony. The mood turns reverent, as the tenor soloist intones the words, ‘All goes onward and outward; nothing collapses.’ The piece ends with a tone of gentle, slightly ironic questioning.”—David Conte. Frostiana
SATB Chorus divisi, Flute, Clarinet, Contrabass, and Piano Based on four poems by Christina Rossetti that follow the annual progress of the seasons. Cast in near symphonic proportions, each movement has its own distinct character. Wachner deftly conveys the inherent joy and drama of the life-cycle using musical idioms that are at once both lyrically expressive and minimalistic.

Carmina amoris Soprano and Tenor Soli, off-stage Soprano Solo, SATB Chorus divisi, and Orchestra “When I first began to look at medieval Latin texts for Carmina amoris, the epigrams, marginalia, and love letters I found by clerics and nuns from the fourth to the thirteenth centuries were a revelation. The beauty and freshness of the language spoke across the centuries. In matters of love (longing, desire, lamenting, sleepless wondering, making up, and quarreling), it appears not much has changed from the so-called ‘dark ages’ to our own well-illumined era.” —Steven Sametz Orchestra instrumentation: 3[1.2.pic] 3[1.2.Eh] 3[1.2.3/bcl] 3[1.2.3/cbn]—4 3 3 1—hp, pf/cel—6 perc—str Difficult

OTTORINO RESPIGHI TRANS. KEVIN UPPERCUE
Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1 A transcription of the first suite to one of Respighi’s most famous and much-beloved works. The orchestral suite itself is a transcription of sixteenth-century lute works, of which Respighi also transcribed for piano 2- and 4-hands. The transcriber of this edition used the orchestral setting in order to match the orchestral instruments to their corresponding organ stops with as much accuracy as possible. The transciption is idiomatic and a delight to play. The first three movements are accessible while the fourth will require more practice time. The movements could be performed alone or with one another and would give an audience a unique and pleasant concert experience. Duration: 15:00 Medium

Rêverie
$40.00
FEATURED AT 2016 AGO
Hommage à Francis Poulenc Alto Saxophone and Organ “With the contrasting and complimentary ingredients of both piety and playfulness thoughtfully put in place, it is the intent of Rêverie to conjure the heart of Poulenc’s musical form. Rêverie is a work that combines harmonic inventiveness, melodic poignancy and rhythms sprinkled with mischievous pulses. While the work does pay homage to the master with reverence, it simultaneously summons a fresh, new perspective of these old, familiar forms—these ‘ships’ of our pasts. With that said, perhaps it is best to let Stravinsky take the helm: ‘[But] the true work of an artist is to improve upon old ships. He can only recount in his own way what has already been told.’”—Luke Mayernik Includes score and Alto Saxophone part. Duration: 6:30 Moderately Difficult
