For the town, we need to see the front of Titine’s and La Fourche’s houses. In the forest, we are in a magical, powerful environment: settings and light should reinforce this atmosphere. Sets should be as minimal as possible. 7LPH A remote part of Louisiana during the 19th century. 6\QRSVLV In a town in backwoods Louisiana, four people dream wonderfully vivid dreams which are induced when a magical silver fox roams the woods. Each dream involves a young woman, Titine. T-Boy, who is in love with Titine, dreams of a magical life together. Carrie Mae, who loves T-Boy, dreams of a gold ball at which she and Titine are guests. La Fourche, Titine’s selfappointed guardian, dreams of becoming wealthy by bartering for her hand in marriage. The Squire, a wealthy, lonely, and somewhat addled man, dreams of buying her love. Poor Titine dreams strange, confused dreams of fire and flying through the forest. She wants only to be left alone by all so that she can decide her own destiny. To win her hand, T-Boy decides to shoot the silver fox for Titine. He tells Carrie Mae and sets off in pursuit of the fox. At the same time, La Fourche and the Squire barter for Titine. When she learns of La Fourche’s treachery she runs into the forest, confused and crying. Tante Marie, a mysterious woman of the woods, appears and comforts Titine, telling her that she is the silver fox and that must look to herself for strength and courage. In the meantime, the others have gathered in the woods looking for Titine. The Squire finds her and calls the others. In terror and confusion she finally transforms herself into the silver fox and excapes. She reappears. At the same time, T-Boy rushes in and takes aim. Carrie Mae breaks his aim – he shoots the Squire and Titine/silver fox escapes. The others gather around the Squire. After determining that he is only grazed, Titine appears more radiant than ever. Titine reconciles with all and takes leave of them to live a magical life in the forest. 1RWH The audience will be called upon to help in the transformation of Titine to the silver fox and vice-versa. The convention for this is established in the Prologue: the Silver Fox Theme is heard, the lights become dim, then blackened. The audience chants the name “Titine – the transformation is made – when the lights come back up, Titine/silver fox is moving quickly about the stage, creating, it is hoped, a vivid effect.

The Silver Fox
A Chamber Opera for Young People John Olive (1978)
Libby Larsen 1978, revised 2009
The stage is bare. The house lights are on. TANTE MARIE enters. She is an older woman. She wears a strange, complex costume, possibly with a headdress designed to evoke the forest.

Tante Marie
[Celeste ad lib.]
As soon as she speaks, the house lights fade quickly, and the atmosphere becomes moody and evocative. TANTE MARIE’S heavily made up face seems to glow in the strange light.
