Program Note
All of Me is the third movement of Pederson’s five movement work, A Vision Unfolding, for SATB chorus, piano, and spoken word—with optional violin, trumpet, and snare drum. The work is centered broadly around themes of social justice, inviting the listener on an exploration of community, inclusivity, freedom, and justice.
Composer’s Note
I think we all sense our communities becoming more fractured; we witness individual relationships fraying in our neighborhoods, schools, churches, places of work, and even our families. One of the root causes of this is, I believe, how quick we are to judge others—and hold others in contempt— for their politics, their religion, gender or sexual expression, skin color, class, education level, and a host of other characteristics. This piece is an invitation to lay down our judgments. It’s also an invitation to see those aspects of identity that are important to people...but to see people around us as more than just a collection of isolated characteristics...to see all of them.
Optional Spoken Word: In A Vision Unfolding, this piece is preceded by a spoken word prologue. If you’d like to incorporate the spoken word in your performance of this piece, you can find the text and piano underscore on the ECS website as a free download. (Alternatively, you are welcome to craft your own introduction to the piece with original poetry, speech excerpts, etc.)

Look at my skin.
Do you see only skin, or the soul within... do you see what’s true?
Look who I love. Do you view me as less, like none of the rest of me matters to you?
Turn off the talk on the air, and the voices who seem to just care about dividing and hiding us where you won’t see.
Look at my faith. Do you see my creed, and choose to believe that’s all of me?
Look at my vote. On that alone are you likely to show contempt for me?
You don’t have to see. But if you take the time to look at me, you’ll see the same fears and a good heart, and the same tears that tear you apart. See the same love, the same hope, the same need, the same joy.
So look at my skin. See the skin and the soul within. See what’s true.
Look who I love.
And see my faith and my vote, but not those alone, seek to know me, too.
Turn up the voices of truth. Learn to let mercy through. Love will guide us to a world where we see. All of me.
Turn and see. Will you see? All of me.

Composer’s Notes
With a Spark celebrates the people who set ‘sparks’ in our lives, influencing us with their passion and dedication, helping us ignite our inner fires, and guiding us on our own journeys of self-discovery. As such, this work is a great fit for programs honouring people who have a lasting impact on us (teachers, conductors, parents, mentors) as well as programs exploring themes of self-discovery, growth, and change.
Copyingisillegal Reviewcopy only
Performance Notes
From the offset, With a Spark is quite animated and should be sung with brightness, buoyancy, and curiosity. The contrasting middle section beginning on p. 11 should embody a feeling of warmth and comfort. The choir’s aleatoric parts in the section should also convey a quietly sparkling hopeful energy. In the final section of this work, which reprises material from the opening, take care to sing with greater sensitivity, strength, and true fire.
A tremolo over a sustained note indicates that choristers should individually repeat the text in square brackets on the given pitch (varying the rhythm and tempi). This is a textural effect that as a whole should sound like a sparkly re-articulated drone. Two additional notes:
1. In m. 50–51 SAT sings their first “listen” together, sustaining the second syllable. Then, individually singers re-enter (on or anytime after the downbeat of m. 51) and continue repeating “listen”. An easy way to coordinate this and ensure variation in entries is to instruct singers to hold their tutti “listen” for the length of one breath and then to re-enter whenever they need to breathe next (ideally avoiding re-entering at the same time as their neighbours).
2. Although note changes should happen in time and as written, choristers should comfortably finish the word, syllable, or phrase they are singing before moving on to the new text. For example, Altos will move to an E on the downbeat of m. 58 but may need to finish saying “listen” before moving to their new text “feel, flicker, flame.”
Text
It all starts with a spark, a flicker, a flame. It all starts with a fire that ignites a change and grows. Born in a world of boundless skies where sea and sun collide, we’re made to burn bright to spin dreams from light and rise.
’Til we find a fire that is our own, ’til we know the heart that guides us on. Born from a spark, flicker, flame. Our spark, flicker, flame will guide the way.
Just listen. Stoke the flame. Feel your embers burn within. And soon you’ll know the power of a fleeting moment. And soon you’ll know the power an outstretched hand.
Can you feel it grow? A flicker can shape a lifetime. All it takes is a spark to set the tides of change. Can you feel the wave? Can you hear it now? Feel it ripple and flow. Well, now we know our fire.
It all starts with a spark, a flicker, a flame to set the world ablaze!

PROGRAM NOTES
Writing about this work, Dr. Barnwell reminds us, “Every child born gives us renewed hope for the world, but for each child to know their value and understand their responsibility in the world, they must know who they are. And they must understand the sum total of all the things we are is one. In all the ways that count, we are one.”
This work is built upon a stack of four ostinati with driving rhythms which underscore a texted melody that lilts and sways in a most natural way. She adds an upper voice which at times functions as a duet with the melodic material and at other times imparts a gentle countermelody.
TEXT
For each child that’s born, a morning star rises and sings to the universe who we are.
We are our grandmothers’ prayers, and we are our grandfathers’ dreamings, we are the breath of our ancestors, we are the spirit of God.
We are mothers of courage and fathers of time, we are daughters of dust and the sons of great visions, we’re sisters of mercy and brothers of love, we are lovers of life and the builders of nations, we’re seekers of truth and keepers of faith, we are makers of peace and the wisdom of ages.
—Ysaÿe M. Barnwell

Dr. Ysaÿe M. Barnwell is a commissioned composer, arranger, author, and actress. She began her 15-year violin instruction at age two and a half and went on to earn degrees in speech pathology (BS, MSEd), craniotomy-facial studies (Ph.D.) and public health (MSPH). In addition, she was awarded honorary doctoral degrees from theological seminaries in Illinois and Virginia.
Dr. Barnwell taught at Howard University College of Dentistry for over a decade, later moving on to overseeing public health projects. In 1979, she joined the Grammy winning African American female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock.
She also served as teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance, leading a workshop entitled “Building a Vocal Community: Singing in the African American Tradition” both at home and abroad. Conducted in the oral tradition, it utilized an African world view and explored African American history, values, cultural, and vocal traditions to build communities of song among both singers and non-singers. Her pedagogy is highly respected among musicians, educators, health workers, activists, organizers, and members of both corporate and non-profit sectors.
In addition, Dr. Barnwell has published books and made appearances on tv and in film. Composing music for dance, choral, film and video, she has received commissions from countless organizations including Sesame Street, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the King’s Singers among others.
E. C. Schirmer Music Company is proud to be the publishing home for Dr. Barnwell’s choral music. Please visit ecspublishing.com for a complete listing of her works.
