How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place
SAB or SATB and Piano Based on a paraphrase of Psalm 84 by Jonathan Asprey, this setting uses the tune “The Homes of Donegal,” a traditional Irish ballad. The arrangement is flexible and can by sung by both SAB and SATB choirs. Intended to be accompanied by piano, it also works on organ, making it a sweet and accessible way to sing this beloved Psalm. Part of the PAM Series. Moderately Easy

SATB and Piano The fact that this anthem is based on stanzas from three beloved old hymns, “O Jesus, My Savior,” “I Love Thee,” and “My Jesus, I Love Thee,” gives it a feeling of familiarity, though the melody may not be as familiar. The tune is EXPRESSION, a Sacred Harp tune from 1844. Women’s and men’s voices are featured separately both in unison and in two parts. The accessible four-part writing makes this a sure-fire success for even smaller SATB choirs. Moderately Easy

SATB a cappella Neil Harmon’s adaptation of an 1875 text is surprisingly relevant, due to its simple structure. SATB and Piano This 1835 text and tune from Southern Harmony is in a lilting 6/8. The arrangement is mostly four-part, but it does feature the men’s voices for half a verse. Direct and simple, this “Garden Hymn” is not to be confused with “I come to the garden alone…” which came almost 80 years later. SATB Chorus and Piano This new arrangement focuses on the inherent drama of the text. Each verse expresses a different reaction to its question about the crucifixion. The piano accompaniment varies with the mood of the lyrics—from simple chordal support at the beginning, to harsh rhythms (“nailed him to the cross”), to rapid sunburst patterns (“the sun refused to shine”), to sorrowful descending lines (“laid him in the tomb”). Soprano or Tenor Solo, SATB Chorus (divisi) and Piano A compilation of three gospel choruses by Henry Mollicone. “Glory Day!” from the opera Gabriel’s Daughter and “Now I Can See the Light!” (tracks 17 and 18 on Disc 2) were both inspired by texts. Both are fast and joyful, while the third work, “Hear Me, Redeemer,” (listed above) is slower and more soulful. Treble Solo or Soli, Three-part Treble Chorus and Piano Commissioned by Mississauga (Ontario) Children’s Choir, O Clap Your Hands is a setting of words from Psalm 47 as translated and adapted by the composer. Influenced by jazz and gospel music, this fast, energetic work surges forward with constant syncopation, rich pan-diatonic and chromatic harmony, and repeated melodic lines and text. The bright and challenging piano part, with its added-tone arpeggios and extended registers, highlights and punctuates the vocal lines. SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied If Ye Love Me was composed as a reflective commentary on the well-known motet by Thomas Tallis (1505–1585). Homophony predominates in the first section but with clusters rather than the traditional harmonies used by Tallis. Later, the texture reduces to a very simple four-voice contrapuntal texture as a brief reference to Tallis’ style. The chorus then divides into two groups with one group continuing the counterpoint which is now expanded into a more active and complex style. The second group of voices returns to the homophonic style, but now in widely expanded harmonies. Thus, the motet concludes with homophony and counterpoint sounding simultaneously. Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1 Ottorino Respighi / Trans. Kevin Uppercue A transcription of the first suite to one of Respighi’s most famous and much-beloved works. The orchestral suite itself is a transcription of sixteenth-century lute works, of which Respighi also transcribed for piano 2- and 4-hands. The transcriber of this edition used the orchestral setting in order to match the orchestral instruments to their corresponding organ stops with as much accuracy as possible. The transciption is idiomatic and a delight to play. Medium

David Schelat
Matthew H. Corl If you like pieces that are challenging and bit more showy than run-of-the-mill, this collection is for you. Although not necessarily difficult, they do take some working out. The results will be well worth it. The collection contains a rousing prelude on TRURO; a toccata on EASTER HYMN; two variants on O FILII ET FILIAE; trumpet tune on DIADEMATA; and a quieter trio on VRUECHTEN. Matthew Corl writes in an ebullient style that is both fun to play and fun to hear. Medium

David Schelat always has a fresh approach (stylistically, rhythmically, or harmonically) to the tunes he uses, and this collection is no exception. EASTER HYMN is set to a lilting waltz, LANCASHIRE as an imitative trio, GAUDEAMUS PARITER as a lively dance, GELOBT SEI GOTT as a fugal setting with a cantus firmus in the pedal, and CHRIST IST ERSTANDEN as a baroque slow movement with a solo for cornet registration. Interesting and rewarding to play and hear. Medium

Tips and Techniques for Creating Hymn-Based Organ Settings
Joyce Jones
Donald Rotermund
This book provides a short, easy introduction to the organ. Intended to provide pianists a quick method that will get them playing as rapidly as possible. Although quite easy, the hymn-based pieces included in this book can be used as voluntaries in church or as introductions to the hymns on which they are based.
These books give organists the techniques necessary to create a variety of pleasant settings based on the notes of the hymnal harmonizations. The hymnal serves as the basic printed resource for taking something “off the page.” Each self-directed chapter treats a different technique. Off the Page, Too includes more advanced concepts, such as modifying inner voices, changing tonality, and ornamenting melodies.

Meditation on Steal Away
Prelude on the Spiritual O Fix Me
Three Organ Pieces
William B. Cooper (1920–1993) wrote this meditation in 1964. It is a gentle, short piece based on a universally known spiritual. His treatment of the theme is unusual, played in the pedal within a framework on slowly moving chords in 3/4 time, giving the impression of a lullaby. Medium

Spiritual Lullaby
A lovely piece based on the Christmas spiritual, Baby Bethlehem. It begins as a gently rocking trio, restrained and peaceful, building up to an unexpected climax of strong, shifting chords, and ends as serenely and quietly as it began. Medium

The best description of these pieces is given by the composer himself: “No. 1 is elemental—but not quite primitive in nature. No. 2 is the quintessence of refinement. No. 3 is ‘big city’ organ music.” Medium

Chorale Prelude on Das neugeborne Kindelein
ADOLPHUS HAILSTORK
The Baroque chorale prelude is the model for this lovely organ piece; the theme is in the pedal with three contrapuntal voices in the manuals. The composer’s twentieth century harmonic idiom and the soaring 4' flute melody in the pedal gives the piece an original sound and an aura of quiet joy and tranquil beauty. Medium

Toccata on Veni Emmanuel
Although many composers have based compositions on this well-known Advent hymn, few are as powerful and vigorous as this one. Written in a driving 5/8 time throughout, the uneven note values of the tune give a sense of urgency to the whole piece. An exciting addition to the organ literature for Advent. Moderately Difficult

Variations on Dona nobis pacem
The singing of Dona nobis pacem is an annual holiday tradition at the Eastman School of Music. I wrote the Variations on Dona nobis pacem to play at a gathering of University of Rochester alumni in November of 2016. In creating a solo piano piece from vocal material, I introduce the tune alone, then its bass, which is similar to that of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Nine variations and a finale follow in a variety of styles that recall Classical and Romantic-period composers. —David Evan Thomas Duration: 6:30 Intermediate

“One dictionary definition of illusion takes a psychological perspective in saying that an illusion represents something in a way that may differ from reality. GW YNETH WALKER
This set of short pieces is based on folksongs from the Appalachian Mountains. This music originated in the British Isles as unaccompanied ballads and the tunes were brought to the United States. As time passed, instruments were added—zither, banjo and, eventually, guitar. The guitar versions have become well-known “standards” of the American folk repertoire. The intent of this work has been to create new piano repertoire within the “folk spirit”— rough hewn, straightforward, energetic, and beautiful. Moderately Easy

Fantasypiece
The Peacemakers
Stanley M. Hoffman
Gwyneth Walker
Violoncello and Double Bass
Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello, with opt. Readers The Peacemakers is inspired by Leymah Gbowee’s book Mighty Be Our Powers—the story of Gbowee’s organizing Liberian women into peaceful protest against the Liberian dictator, Charles Taylor. The music comprises four movements which parallel the course of the book: “A Time of Innocence,” “Changes,” “What Is Lost,” and “And great shall be thy peace.” An introductory section features tapping on the instruments, suggestive of drumming. This is followed by the “dance” theme, presented in the clarinet. A middle section introduces strains of the Lutheran hymn tune “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” The dance theme returns and then fades. The composer has included optional narrative poetry based on Gbowee’s book, written by Martha Greene Eads. Duration: ca. 14:00 Moderately Difficult
Fantasypiece involves the presentation of musical passages which set up a polemic between chromatically colored harmonies and tonal ones. The piece opens with a brooding theme featuring the tritone interval, followed by an interlude leading to a lirico theme. Chromatic, transposed variations on that interlude return throughout the piece to frustrate the attempts of increasingly tonal music prevail over chromatically colored music. One even hears a cantando Neo-Classical sequence with running sixteenth notes a couple of times over the course of the work, as well as a set of ornate, Baroque-like variations on the lirico theme. Near the end of the piece, an extended recapitulation occurs which is devoid of chromatically colored harmonies, making it seem as though that sort of music will prevail; a passionate, celebratory Tango ensues. In the end, the chromatic harmonies return and the piece ends on the ambiguous interval of the tritone with which it begins. Includes two scores. Duration: ca. 12:40 Difficult

The Aria features a lyrical, somewhat melancholy melody in the solo instrument which is continually supported by rich, regularly pulsating chords in the accompaniment. This subject is treated with standard devices of development, including inversion and augmentation. Includes score and part. Duration: 8:00. Moderately Difficult

“With the contrasting and complimentary ingredients of both piety and playfulness thoughtfully put in place, it is the intent of Rêverie to conjure the heart of Poulenc’s musical form. Rêverie is a work that combines harmonic inventiveness, melodic poignancy and rhythms sprinkled with mischievous pulses. While the work does pay homage to the master with reverence, it simultaneously summons a fresh, new perspective of these old, familiar forms—these ‘ships’ of our pasts. With that said, perhaps it is best to let Stravinsky take the helm: ‘[But] the true work of an artist is to improve upon old ships. He can only recount in his own way what has already been told.’”—Luke Mayernik Includes score and Alto Saxophone part. Duration: 6:30 Moderately Difficult

A High and Holy Calling
Nancy Raabe
Essays of Encouragement for the Church and its Musicians Paul Westermeyer At its heart, this book aims to start a dialogue by asking difficult questions about the status quo of life in church and music. Contained in this volume are speeches, articles, and reflections on the work and worth of the vocation of the church musician. Here Westermeyer details a breadth of topics facing the church and its musicians, including cultural assumptions, clergy-musician relationships, congregational singing, the brilliance of Bach, and the legacy to which all of these subjects contribute. Foreword by Zebulon M. Highben. Paperback.

In Their Own Words
Slave Life and the Power of Spirituals Eileen Guenther
NEW! The Church Year in Limericks Christopher M. Brunelle “The Church Year in Limericks is the result of my desire to start choir rehearsals in a new way. Some choir directors simply launch in, others start with an announcement or a short prayer; I wanted to find something that would engage the choir’s attention, provide a comment on the day’s music or the week’s activities, and set a creative challenge for myself. Like an Advent calendar or a box of chocolates, The Church Year in Limericks is not meant to be enjoyed all at once. Each stanza exists on its own, and reading the entire collection straight through diminishes the individuality of its separate parts. Think of this book instead as a sort of hymnal, in which all the hymns happen to be written in the same meter but each one serves a different purpose in worship: contemplation, inspiration, insight, comfort, joy. Yes, there is perhaps a higher quotient of lively word play here than in a regular hymnal, but that’s all the more reason to appreciate each limerick for itself.” —Christopher M. Brunelle Paperback. 98 pages.

This groundbreaking study of slavery and spirituals is the first to place the unique voices of an enslaved people squarely within the context of their daily lives. Dr. Guenther’s deeply researched account weaves a succinct history of “America’s original sin” into an examination of the role of singing and religion in slave life and directly correlates slave testimonies—in their own words—to the themes of Spirituals. In addition to surveying the musical styles, performance practices, and melodic and rhythmic characteristics of spirituals, In Their Own Words includes a biblical concordance to 100 of the spirituals most frequently sung. Rivals or a Team?
Clergy-Musician Relationships in the Twenty-First Century Eileen Guenther This book explores the importance of teamwork, identifying ways in which musicians and clergy can exercise their separate roles effectively and suggesting strategies for building supportive relationships. Former AGO president, Eileen Guenther, takes a clear-eyed look at conflict, reasons musicians leave a church, and approaches for transition when the situation just does not work any longer. She encourages musicians and clergy to work together with mutuality and collegiality in order to fulfill the promise of their ministry. Paperback. 179 pages.

Vox Humana
Sing It Simply, Volume II
Haig Mardirosian
Thomas Keesecker
Vox Humana was veteran organist Haig Mardirosian’s column in The American Organist, the official journal of the American Guild of Organists as well as the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America, which ran monthly for exactly a decade. Appearing in an annotated collection for the first time here, Mardirosian creates an image encompassing both the breadth and depth of the instrument and profession through humor, memory, business, liturgy, and, of course, artistry. This reflection of the organ and those who play it is an essential read for those searching for perspective or new ideas, as well as those looking for understanding, nostalgia, or a bit of humor. After Life
G W Y N E T H WA L K E R
Chamber Opera in One Act After Life imagines a post-mortem reunion of Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein. Stein believes her beloved Alice B. Toklas has conjured her back to life, while Picasso wonders which of his many lovers has called him up from the abyss. When both realize, to their disappointment, that their great loves are not present, the two towering figures discuss their lives, their complex relationship, and their activities during the Second World War. A young girl, a victim of the Holocaust, appears, and it is her questioning that has brought Stein and Picasso back from the dead.
Evangeline
Glory Denied
Rev. 23
Chamber Opera in One Act Evangeline tells the story of the expulsion of the Acadian people from Nova Scotia in 1755–64. Forced into exile by the British, the Acadians were separated from one another and traveled the US and abroad in search of loved ones. Many resettled in Louisiana and became known as Cajuns. Longfellow wrote his poem, ‘Evangeline,’ in 1847. Although the characters are fictitious, their story represents real and tragic events.

Board a Vietnam War aircraft carrier and be immersed in the story of Colonel Floyd James Thompson, America’s longest serving Prisoner of War. Experience the culture shock of the 60’s and 70’s, and observe how media and memory forge American identity.
Rev. 23 is the sequel to the book of Revelations. It is told from the perspective of St. John the Divine and “transcribed” by Cerise Lim Jacobs. The opera narrates the last battle to recapture Paradise-on-Earth and restore the balance of good and evil to our world. Persephone, the only being able to pass freely between Hell and Earth, is recruited by Lucifer in the fight against the rulers of Paradise-on-Earth.

Love’s Signature
Songs for Countertenor and Soprano by Juliana Hall Love’s Signature traverses time and space to celebrate various types of love: characters from the plays of William Shakespeare (1564–1616) reveal universal human experiences of love throughout different times in our lives; the letters of Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) exemplify the love we have for those specific people in our circles who touch us more personally; and the poems of Marianne Moore (1887–1972) speak of how one’s love for an art form like music can provide inspiration and beauty to enrich life. World premiere recordings by Darryl Taylor, countertenor; Juliana Hall, piano; Susan Narucki, Soprano; Donald Berman, piano.

Revelations
Dawn of Night
Su Lian Tan
Music by Stephen Chatman
Su Lian Tan’s assured approach to chamber music is marked in this recording, nimbly performed by the Jupiter String Quartet and pianist Bruce Brubaker. Life in Wayang transports the listener to the traditional puppet theater found most notably in Indonesia and Malaysia, echoing of gamelan and rich with musical commentary. Orfeo in Asia follows the ancient Greek legend to Southeast Asia as he encounters new modalities of harmony and rhythm. Finally, Revelations utilizes the quartet and piano together, reflecting on contemporary scholarly life and its intricacies.
“The latest release from Centrediscs takes a deep dive into the choral music of Vancouver composer Stephen Chatman. Dawn of Night, features music composed over the past decade — none of it previously recorded — admirably performed by the University of Toronto’s MacMillan Singers under Hilary Apfelstadt. The pieces presented here are, in general, subdued and reflective in tone, including a few settings of texts by Tara Wohlberg, Chatman’s wife. “—CBC Music
