A Return to Singing “There is no education like adversity.” —Disraeli This quote sums up how many of us feel about this past year and the myriad number of things we have had to learn. We found out how to do virtual rehearsals, stream our concerts and worship services, and at the same time, try to imagine what the future holds when we reassemble. Staying connected to colleagues and learning from each other has been crucial. Online conferences and virtual meetings certainly can’t replace the benefits of in-person contact, but it can allow us to hear each other and discover new ideas. With that in mind, this catalog is designed to not only show you what is new, but also to give help and

encouragement. I recently interviewed six well-known, creative choral conductors to discover what they have experienced and are doing to move forward after the pandemic. Beginning with Jennaya Robison on page 4, we have summarized the key points of each interview, and spread them throughout the choral section of this catalog. The complete interviews are available on our website and YouTube channel. The future may still be a bit uncertain, but it is our hope that we can begin making progress toward revitalized and exciting music making. Mark W. Lawson, President

» Practice patience. Students in particular are not at the level where they were. » Culture is often taught by those who have been in the choir for a while. Because of this, the building of culture and expectations may require more attention. » Adjust expectations. Start where the singers are, not where you think they should be. » Figure out what skills the members need to acquire. » Consider communicating and being more social through e-mail and helping choir members get to know each other better since it is harder to have after choir socialization.

Death Came A-Knockin’
Mama Said
(Travelin’ Shoes)
SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied American blues icon Ruthie Foster released “Mama Said” on her 2007 recording The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster. This arrangement is deliberately “choral,” preferring to honor Ms. Foster’s exquisite vocal shadings—a bend here, a fall-off there—by avoiding exact imitation. The basses provide the rhythm section of electric bass and closed hi-hat cymbal, leaving the upper three parts in gospel harmony in all but a few measures of the piece. The divisi is confined to a few chords and is not difficult. Duration: 3:00 Medium
Three Treble Soli and SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied This setting requires three treble soloists with power below the staff and confidence in the blues style. O Sapinho (Little Toad) arr. Aderbal Soares
SA Voices and Piano This is a very happy, carefree, and lighthearted song. It helps to think of a marsh on a beautiful evening: clear skies, billions of stars above with thousands of happy-go-lucky toads and frogs croaking away on lily pads then leaping to and fro among the sweet smell of flowers. Uninvited jolly crickets are welcome to chime in, counterpointing their chirping with the dancing flicker of exuberant fireflies. Allow yourself to create a sense of a big celebration to mark the abundance of life. Sung in Brazilian, pronunciation guide included.
Aderbal Soares has very fond memories of his mother singing this song to her young children in Brazil. He says, “We were little, young, eager and full of dreams despite growing up in poverty. Later on she continued singing this folk song to her grandchildren. It has given us plenty of joyous moments.” 24-95670 Choral Score

Homeland Gustav Holst, arr. Z. Randall Stroope Also known as “Jupiter’s Theme” from Holst’s The Planets, this Patriotic British song was sung at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, and tragically, also at her funeral at the request of her sons. Its inherent noble character and seeming timelessness have made this work deeply ingrained in the minds and hearts of people everywhere. Paired with the text by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, Homeland transcends any cultural of national boundaries. People throughout history have cherished their ties of blood, language, and culture, and fought with their lives to protect them. May we ever value our heritage, and the “homeland” which preserves it to this day.. Commissioned for the 2000 Council Bluffs, Iowa All-School Festival. The text by Edna St. Vincent Millay, speaks of a youthful all-night adventure riding the ferry back and forth with no destination in mind. There is much back-and-forth in the musical setting, to a swaying 6/8 meter. Can be sung as part of a larger collection: Passion and Remembrance. Duration: 4:00
An adaptation of the familiar American folk song, “A Man of Constant Sorrow.” This is a very simple melody, placed in the key of C major. The message is a mournful one. The soul is troubled, and not at rest. “All through this world, I’m bound to ramble... perhaps I’ll take the very next train.” Then, later, “perhaps I’ll die upon this train.” Some comfort is taken with the lines “I know we’ll meet on God’s Golden Shore.” Approachable vocal writing with a gently flowing piano accompaniment.

HOWARD GOODALL Eternal Light: A Requiem Soprano Solo, Tenor and/or Baritone Soloists, SATB Chorus with Piano OR Keyboards, Harp and Strings OR Piano, Harp, Organ Eternal Light: A Requiem is a stunning new Requiem for the modern day. It is intended to provide solace to the grieving, reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. Speaking about the work, Howard Goodall said, “For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife. This, like Brahms’, is a Requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, a Requiem focusing on the consequences of interrupted lives.” Duration: 40:00 Medium

Invictus: A Passion Soprano Solo, Tenor Solo, SATB Choir, and Chamber Orchestra Invictus: A Passion seeks to address one of the most powerful and dramatic of the world’s traditional religious stories through the lens of a diverse, modern world. A variety of texts written or inspired by women form a narrative that describes human suffering and persecution, but also emphasizes the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. These universal messages are brought to life with the emotional clarity and sweeping force of any Howard Goodall score. The vocal score includes a piano reduction. Duration: 55:00 Medium

JEFFREY SMITH This Joyful Eastertide SATB Chorus (divisi) and Organ This choral fantasy uses the hymn tune VRUECHTEN as its underpinning but riffs on the tune by altering the phrasing, cadences, and even takes an excursion into the relative minor.
