O Clap Your Hands Treble Solo or Soli, Three-part Treble Chorus and Piano Commissioned by Mississauga (Ontario) Children’s Choir, O Clap Your Hands is a setting of words from Psalm 47 as translated and adapted by the composer. Influenced by jazz and gospel music, this fast, energetic work surges forward with constant syncopation, rich pan-diatonic and chromatic harmony, and repeated melodic lines and text. The bright and challenging piano part, with its added-tone arpeggios and extended registers, highlights and punctuates the vocal lines. Through alternating keys, various homophonic and contrapuntal episodes, and the addition of tutti clapping, the work reaches a climactic, resounding ending. Duration: ca. 3:00 Medium

Winter’s Lullaby SSA Chorus, Flute, Piano Winter’s Lullaby evokes the tranquil beauty of a snow scene in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Clear treble voices, solo flute, and piano add simple melodies to a text which sings a lullaby to winter. Snow melts, ice cracks, and birds fill the clear winter sky with song. Unison choral singing alternates with part-singing, nuanced further by contrasts in legato and non-legato lines. Dedicated to Susan Johnson, who taught music and directed choirs in Bucks County for thirty-two years. Flute part included. Duration: 4:10 Moderately Easy

The Clock (Zegar) Two-part Treble Chorus and Piano Beginning with quotations from Big Ben’s chimes and a traditional melody from the Jewish High Holidays, this piece is scored for two part treble voices, piano, and an optional mechanical clock sound. The text describes the workings of a clock in whimsical ways (tireless little gears and springs), and the vocal lines are lyrical and easy to learn. The piano part completes the effect, sometimes measured and steady, sometimes whirring fantastically. The result is a charming piece for children’s voices. Duration: 3:00 Moderately Easy

Love Arrives SA Chorus and Piano This setting of Maya Angelou’s poem Touched by an Angel is a reminder that love is not a mere timid, fleeting feeling, but a courageous struggle which heightens our experience of both joy and pain. Love leads us from self-awareness to wholeness; love requires our complete sacrifice even as it offers us the ultimate gift in return. The vocal writing successfully tracks the varied emotions, now rhythmic, now gentle, and well supported by a well-crafted piano accompaniment. There are frequent excursions into three-part writing. Comfort, Comfort Now My People SSAA Chorus, Flute, and optional Hand Drum ad lib. “I really enjoy the lilt of the original tune, and was drawn to arrange it when I was struggling to find up-tempo music for the season of Advent that my women’s choir would enjoy singing. Work to make sure that the music maintains an air of ‘dance’ to it. To help with this, you may consider adding an ad libitum hand drum…the second verse allows …the flute becomes a partner in the storytelling as the crying voice, warning cry, rising valleys, and bowing hills.” —Michael Culloton. When the Earth Stands Still Chorus unaccompanied (SATB version recorded) “I wrote this for my wife Allison Girvan’s small but advanced youth choir, Laline.…I decided to compose a song much as a contemporary songwriter would, with my own lyrics and a form based around repeating verse and chorus.
