Full service in every way Europe Container Terminals (ECT) in Rotterdam quickly, efficiently and safely handles all visiting seagoing vessels and connecting modes of transport 24/7 and 365 days a year. At two state-of-the-art deepsea
terminals ECT always puts the customer first. Everything is aimed at an optimum service and performance, both on the sea side and the landside. Through ECT, each container reaches its final destination in the most efficient manner.
At the Maasvlakte, directly on the North Sea, the ECT Delta Terminal and Euromax Terminal Rotterdam are fully geared to round-the-clock discharging and loading Ultra Large Container Ships (12,000+ TEU). Furthermore, ECT’s deepsea terminals offer a comprehensive range of supplementary services such as the handling of noncontainerised special cargo, reefer containers and much more.
ECT continuously invests in further improving its service. Being the founder of container handling in Europe and Rotterdam, ECT introduced the automated container terminal as well as many other innovations. For almost half a century already, ECT has stood for innovative entrepreneurship. As market leader, it is ECT’s ambition to continuously lead the way in new developments.
European Gateway Services From the deepsea terminals of ECT, most of Europe can be reached efficiently and sustainably within a short time via four modes of transport: feeder, barge, rail and road. In the hinterland, ECT has own inland terminals in Moerdijk and Venlo (both in the Netherlands), Duisburg (Germany) and Willebroek (Belgium). These terminals are all operating within the larger European Gateway Services concept. Through this subsidiary of ECT, shipping lines, logistics service providers and shippers can benefit from highly frequent rail and barge connections between Rotterdam and a rapidly expanding network of own and thirdparty inland terminals in the European hinterland. European Gateway Services brings the deepsea terminals of ECT in Rotterdam right up to everyone’s front door, and also offers additional services.

Fast, efficient and safe
Optimal data exchange Preferred first and last port of call
From the North Sea, ships are safely moored at the deepsea terminals of ECT at the Maasvlakte within an hour. The depth along the quay is almost 17 metres. Even the largest vessels have unrestricted access. Many shipping lines therefore select the ECT terminals as their first and last port of call in Europe. As a result, the route via Rotterdam substantially shortens the transit times for cargo.
6
Efficient operations
Operations at ECT’s deepsea terminals start immediately after a ship is moored and the gangway is lowered. ECT aims to safely handle each vessel in the shortest possible time so it is quickly ready for departure again. All the well-trained, service-oriented employees are committed to this task.
ECT offers customers a single window for optimal container data exchange. Companies can benefit from a large number of e-services which further simplify their operations. E-services are available for the deepsea sector, logistics service providers, road transport companies and feeder, barge and rail operators.
ECT is committed to handle each visiting seagoing vessel in the
fastest, safest and most efficient manner possible. Situated directly
on deep water, operations continue 24/7. Ultra Large Container Ships of 12,000+ TEU can moor alongside the quays in all circumstances, fully laden and without any tidal limitations or locks.
State-of-the-art handling
ECT’s deepsea terminals at the Maasvlakte operate almost fully automated. In the state-of-theart concept, ships are handled by semi-automated cranes. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) next take care of transporting the containers between quay and stack. In the stack, all the work is carried out by Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs) or Automated Rail Mounted Gantry cranes (ARMGs).
High value on sustainability
ECT places high value on sustainability in all aspects of its operations, and aims to reduce both its own carbon footprint and that of its customers. In 2010, ECT received the Lean and Green Award, a Dutch initiative to stimulate sustainable entrepreneurship in the logistics sector. In 2013, ECT was even awarded the Lean and Green Star for proven achievements.
Immediately available after discharging
Containers which are discharged from the deepsea vessels are available for onward transport the moment they have been placed in the stack. Cargo owners can immediately collect their containers or have this arranged via ECT’s subsidiary European Gateway Services.

Comprehensive service provision
Maasvlakte Transport Reefer care
At all of its deepsea terminals, ECT offers an extensive range of specialised services for reefer containers. Each terminal has dedicated reefer stacks with numerous plugs to the power grid. The company Delta Reefer Care (a joint venture with reefer maintenance specialist Smith Holland) sees to it that all reefer containers are optimally handled 24/7.
10
Special cargo
ECT’s Special Cargo division ensures that non-containerised cargo travelling aboard container ships, such as yachts, helicopters, steel constructions, tanks, etc. is always handled safely and professionally. No object is too big or heavy for the purpose-trained staff. If necessary, floating cranes offer additional support.
Maasvlakte Transport stream lines the logistics in and around the port area. From the major container terminals at the Maasvlakte, the road transport company particularly focuses on transporting containers to and from the centrally located customs scan, the transport of reefer containers to veterinary checkpoints and just-in-time deliveries to distribution centres.
ECT’s service provision at the deepsea terminals comprises much
more than the fast and efficient discharging and loading of deepsea vessels and the smooth handling of connecting modes of transport. A comprehensive range of high-quality supplementary services is available as well. In all operations, security and safety are of paramount importance.
Quality marks
Round-the-clock security
ECT is in full compliance with the global ISPS Code and a participant in the US C-TPAT programme, both of which are designed to protect ports and ships against terrorism. All ECT locations have round-the-clock security to prevent cargo theft and other criminal acts. Access to the terminals is tightly controlled.
Safe operations
Safety is a top priority at ECT. Strict safety rules are in force at all ECT locations, covering ECT employees as well as external workers, suppliers and visitors. Continuous training programmes make employees aware of the safety risks they face and how to best minimise them.
The service provision of ECT is supported by prominent quality marks. As an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO), ECT has proven to Customs that all its operations meet strict requirements. As a result, customers can count on important customs simplifications which further smoothen logistics. Through winning the Lean and Green Star, ECT has demonstrably reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 20 per cent over a five-year period.

European hub
Unique options for inland shipping All attention for feeders
Being the preferred first and last port of call in Europe for many deepsea lines, ECT is also Europe’s leading feeder hub. Highly frequent feeder services provide connections with numerous ports throughout Europe. Everything at ECT is geared to optimally connecting deepsea vessels and feeders. At the ECT Delta Terminal, for example, the dedicated Delta Barge Feeder Terminal offers additional options for this. 12
From Rotterdam, the rivers Rhine and Meuse offer a unique natural infrastructure for waterborne transport deep into Europe. Barges efficiently, reliably and sustainably connect the ECT terminals with various destinations in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and Switzerland. At ECT’s deepsea terminals, special barge cranes and dedicated facilities like the Delta Barge Feeder Terminal and Hartelhaven Terminal offer additional capacity to handle barges even more efficient.
Rotterdam is ideally situated to serve the European market. Every week, ECT’s deepsea terminals constitute the starting point and terminus
for hundreds of rail shuttles, barge and feeder connections to and from
destinations all over Europe. In addition, some 20,000 trucks call at the deepsea terminals every week. For all four modes of transport, ECT offers round-the-clock, state-of-the-art facilities.
Smooth truck calls
Special rail facilities
As part of the deepsea terminals, ECT operates three rail terminals at the Maasvlakte which offer direct access to the European railway network. The rail terminals are the starting point and terminus of the Betuweroute, the dedicated 160-kilometre long freight railway line linking Rotterdam with Germany. Each week, some 120 shuttle trains efficiently and sustainably connect ECT’s deepsea terminals with all the major economic centres throughout Europe.
ECT’s deepsea terminals lie directly on the A15 motor way which offers access to the wider European motorway network. A large part of Europe can be reached within 24 hours. ECT efficiently handles all visiting trucks. The Cargo Card and other IT solutions ensure the shortest possible turnaround times.

European Gateway Services
Reliable and sustainable
Companies can leave their entire hinterland transport to European Gateway Services. Immediately after having been discharged from the deepsea ship, containers are reliably and sustainably moved to one of the participating inland terminals throughout Europe by train or barge. The customer can next collect the containers at his convenience or have them delivered just-in-time at the final destination. Of course, European Gateway Services provides a similar service for export cargo from the hinterland to the port of Rotterdam. 16
Strategic network
The inland terminals participating in European Gateway Services are spread throughout the European market. All the inland terminals are highly frequently connected with ECT’s deepsea terminals. In addition, the inland terminals are linked with one another as well as with other deepsea terminals in both Rotterdam and beyond. The result is a constantly expanding and increasingly more comprehensive open network of efficient, reliable and sustainable connections.
Inland terminal services
All the inland terminals in the European Gateway Services network offer a wide range of supplementary services, such as temporary storage, bonded warehousing, pre-transport and posttransport by truck, fumigation services, empty depot and more.
Via European Gateway Services, ECT offers highly frequent rail and barge connections between Rotterdam and a rapidly expanding
network of inland terminals in the European hinterland. Shipping
lines, logistics service providers and shippers alike can benefit from this. European Gateway Services brings the deepsea terminals of ECT right up to everyone’s front door.
Synchromodality as a starting point
Extended gates®
Several of the inland terminals in the European Gateway Services network act as extended gates®. On the routes from Rotterdam to these terminals, companies can conveniently benefit from additional customs services such as paperless transport. In that case, containers travel under the customs license of ECT. It is not until the extended gate that a customer needs to arrange the customs formalities. This allows companies to achieve additional time savings and increase efficiency.
Optimally sustainable
Making use of European Gateway Services means a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. Compared to trucking, transporting cargo between Rotterdam and the inland terminals by rail or barge considerably lowers a company’s carbon footprint.
The starting point for European Gateway Services is always the synchromodal organisation of hinterland transport. For each trip, a choice is made from various modes of transport (rail, barge, feeder, truck). If necessary (due to speed requirements or obstructions en route, for example) modes of transport can be immediately switched. Companies are always assured of the best transport combinations.
