Amazing Grace: A Tribute to You, The Story of Us by D. Michele Jackson Lyrical and poetically-charged, Amazing Grace: A Tribute to You, The Story of Us by D. Michele Jackson is a memoir of love, loss and rebirth. It is a Black Pearls book of the month! Read the amazing author's interview: https://conta.cc/3cm9gaY Here is a brief excerpt from Amazing Grace Every year on the anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, the footage of his historical moments ran all day on television. Mommie and I would sit on the couch and have our dinner after making it home from work and school. Together we watched the footage, and she explained the events. The tears I cried after learning people would hate me for the color of my skin! I did the same each year I heard the speech, "I Have A Dream." I left the couch and lay close to the television set. My mom would say, "Move back from that television. It's going to hurt your eyes to sit that close." I acted as if I didn't hear her. I couldn't move. The speech had begun. Mesmerized, I listened to the words of a great speaker. His words gave me hope, the eloquent articulation showed promise, and his leadership proved God to be well and living. Dr. King said something about "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The speech did not conclude before he provided encouraging words that 1963 was a beginning. All grown up, I've stumbled to a place in history. I can now say little girls who fight hard become women who fight harder. A Poem by Dr. Howard Thurman: Song of the Angels "When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, and When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart." Thank you, men of God. I paid close attention. ( Continued‌ Get the book! )

2021 Writing Sisters Summit in The Sands with Nina Foxx

October 14-17 2021 Blue Sky Retreat and Bed & Breakfast in Taos, NM Register today to save your spot: https://www.clevervixenmedia.com The Writing Sisters Summit was born in 2018 during a discussion between Writing Sister-Friends Nina Foxx and Reshonda Tate Billingsley, with the intent of bringing together writers, male and female, who want to hone their craft with and learn from other writers. In 2021, The Summit/Retreat will take to the Sands of Taos, NM, featuring workshops by Seattle based NAACP Image award nominated writer, playwright and filmmaker, Nina Foxx, along with several of the writer-friends that she met through the course of her twenty years as a published author. Nina created the summit with the intent of spurring creativity and creating community among writers that want to deepen and expand their craft and learn how to prepare their work for publishing. Foxx says “When we used to get book tours, I’d cross paths with other writers on the way to the independent bookstores and we had a community to help encourage us and learn. They felt like a family of close coworkers in an otherwise solitary occupation and we helped each other be more creative. The death of the indie bookstore has basically killed those bookstores and that connection, too. I want to re-create that.” Have you reserved your space for the Writing Sisters Summit--In The Sands? The retreat takes place in Taos, NM. Visit the official website for more details at: www.clevervixenmedia.com

My Last Baggage Call Aboard Air Force One: A Journey of Sacrifice, Service, Family, and Friendship by Glenn W. Powell Sergeant Glenn W. Powell’s MY LAST BAGGAGE CALL is the story of a most unlikely young man who leaves his working-class environment of Toledo, Ohio, to become a soldier. Seeking excitement and a way to “make something of himself,” Glenn Powell’s journey exceeds his wildest dreams—a journey that began in basic training in Fort Hood, Texas ends at 1600 Pennsylvania avenue—the most important address in the world. This exciting memoir chronicles the life and memories of a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army, and 10-year veteran of the White House where he served under Presidents George HW Bush, President William J. Clinton, and President George W. Bush. Powell’s poignant and inspiring story includes memories from some 50 white house colleagues, family members and lifelong military buddies who enriched his life, and made an indelible impact on his journey. SFC Powell’s story is that of a restless young man who grew up in a working-class environment with ample opportunities to journey down the wrong path. Yet, thanks to his childhood village, the many role models whose lives exemplified the best in American values, made all the difference in his journey. Except for that “village,” of his childhood, Glenn believes his story might have had a different ending. The hardworking citizens living purpose-filled lives, served as a buffer against the discontent and civil unrest plaguing the rest of world. The centerpiece of that village, Glenn says, was his parents who, while they never lived under one roof, both loved him unconditionally. Margaret Powell was a young single working mother, and a constant reminder of the importance of working toward excellence at one’s chosen career. She would become Kroger Stores’ first African American manager. His father, a prominent entrepreneur in the Toledo area, would remain a constant in Glenn’s life until the end. Glenn says these lessons sustained him throughout his journey – from the pampered child, to the responsible teen, to the ambitious young soldier, to the doting husband and father; and the loyal and “never say never” Sergeant and aide to the President of the United States of America.

This book is an intimate retelling of lives and stories that strips migrants of convenient agenda-driven labels, baring them stark to the reader. With blood running in their veins, vulnerable to fear, driven by ambition--the emotive human is at the centre of Massocki's latest work. The Pride of an African Migrant is a frank expository conversation for today and of all time. It is a book that every immigration player should read--from potential migrants to diplomatic staff, immigration officials, foreign policy advisors... every person with a migrant family member or neighbour. Praise for ' THE PRIDE OF AN AFRICAN MIGRANT' Dr Melanie Griffiths, University of Birmingham, England, UK 'Mixing politics and philosophy with the personal, Massocki recounts his troubling yet powerful tale of migration from Africa to Europe. His memoir weaves in a rich and unusual variety of voices: from individuals he met along his journey, to those of presidents, philosophers, musicians and academics. The result is a provocative, political memoir that seeks to inform people of the realities of migrating to Europe: a call on Africans to embrace their pride and dignity.' The Mountain We Climb by Dr. Wayne Swan Most people want to accomplish great things—improve their own lives and make the world better in some way. You might be thinking, But why does it have to be so hard? Life can seem like a constant battle—helping a loved one who just won’t listen, paying the light bill when there’s not enough money to go around, finding happiness when everyone around you says it’s impossible. Yet some people make “impossible” things happen: someone becomes a millionaire; somebody breaks a world record; someone else reaches the summit of a mountain; one person inspires millions while many struggle to even influence a single person. What Draws Out the Greatness We Have Inside? Contrary to popular belief, we all have the potential to do great things, to create the kind of life and happiness we desire. If you felt even the slightest doubt as you read that, you need to read this book! You don’t have to be told that there is a lot of negativity and opposition in life; if not from the people and things around us, then from our own insecurities from within. Seeing the accomplishments of others gives us hope...it inspires and motivates us. We are able to see that “doing the impossible” is in fact possible. But this isn’t enough. We need to know how! The Secret There is one thing that every person who achieves something great has, and it is how to tap into the mother lode of power and unstoppable greatness that lies mostly dormant within us all! The answer is having a GUIDE. Many things seem impossible to us; especially when trying to solve them with no real guidance, no know-how to doing it right. The smart way to proceed is by learning from those who can show you the road map. The Mountain We Climb is your road map to the life you deserve. The Struggle: From Kenya to Jamaica by Karen Sloan-Brown In part two, The Struggle, in the year AD 490, Priscilla Sinclair's ancestors battle in religious wars for 1000 years until the beginning of the Transatlantic slave trade. They are sold as slaves and shipped to a sugarcane plantation in Jamaica. Two hundred years later, Adam is sold and shipped to a tobacco plantation in Virginia. In this thrilling journey through history, Priscilla is given a chance to go from failure to faith and live to fight another day. But will she accept the stranger's challenge? Black Pearls Magazine Conversation with Karen In 2009, after the election of Barack Obama, she was inspired to write a black history book. Several readers recommended that she write a fictional history book, and that opened the flood gates and the words poured out. Her upbringing as the daughter of a civil rights activist and minister has been a major influence in her writing. She is the author of A Reflection: What a Difference a Day Makes, What About 100 Years? and several novels. BPM: Tell us about your first published book. My first published book was a black history book called “A Reflection: What A Difference A Day Makes, What about 100 Years.” It was inspired by the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first black president. I had just finished writing my dissertation but the research for that project was more than I had ever done before. I learned so much, and I found out that finally I was doing what I was born to do. BPM: Introduce us to you most recent work. My recent project, the three-book series, “The Designated Ones: From Jerusalem to Ethiopia,” “The Struggle: From Kenya to Jamaica,” and “The Last Tribe of Levi: Richmond, Virginia,” took my research to a whole other level. It made the 100-year project seem so easy.” It follows a line of men of God for more than 3000 years until the lineage ends with a woman of God. The books give history across continents and the trials of this family. The first book is being converted to an e-book. The others will be done soon as well.

The Last Tribe of Levi Richmond, Virginia by Karen Sloan-Brown In part three, The Last Tribe of Levi, Priscilla Sinclair's ancestors gain their freedom in Virginia. Her great- great-grandfather, Thomas Freeman begins to build on the legacy that she hoped to continue. Except her father won’t accept her calling to preach God’s word. In this thrilling journey through history, Priscilla is given a chance to go from failure to faith and live to fight another day. But will she accept the stranger's challenge? More Black Pearls Conversation with Karen BPM: Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb? The premise for the books is being able to triumph after tragedy. It is biblical and historical, but restoration is the theme that flows through all the books. BPM: Give us some insight into your main characters. What makes each one so special? There are so many characters over the generations of the story, each having their own struggle. The book begins and ends with Priscilla the first woman in the lineage to preach the Word. She struggles with her ambition, balancing her family responsibilities, and then the grief for the decisions she made. BPM: Does one of the characters hold a special place in your heart? I feel a bond with Priscilla’s mother. She is the steady person through whatever happened. That person you can count on. She is strongly grounded and is the support for all if her family. I can relate. BPM: Did you learn anything personal from writing the book? I discovered that I continue to deal with the tragic losses in my own family. When I finished the book, I felt self-conscious about the death of a character, as if I was writing too much sorrow. Then I had to realize that is a part of life as well as the joys we experience. Not only is Harrison a multi-awardwinning author, but she is an avid reader as well. “I’ve strayed away from the practice, but years ago I made a concerted effort to always read a book from the Harlem Renaissance writers every time I read a contemporary piece of fiction. Words have long been regarded as a means to wellness. In moments of crisis and frustration, a phone call from sister-friends and family can serve as a woman’s lifeline. When those who would serve as a support system are unavailable, comfort can be found in prayer, a song, or poetry. The genre of inspirational poetry has encouraged scores of people Wild Heart, Peaceful Soul: Poems & Inspiration to Live and Love Harmoniously (available on Amazon), was written to be a source of inspiration to women of this generation who lead with their hearts, especially young women. An attorney-at-law by trade, helping others has always been her passion. Autherine recognized that many women choose to face personal struggles by isolating themselves, out of fear or embarrassment or the need to show strength even when feeling vulnerable. Motivated by her faith and passion for writing, she created this book of inspirational poetry to capture the pain and struggle of women who love deeply and pour into others without first filling their own jars. Both strength and vulnerability are recurring themes, as well as embracing self-love and reclaiming your heart. “Heartbreak, rejection, abandonment are universal struggles, even though they may cause us to feel alone,” says Autherine. “Regardless of how others may have treated us in the past, we are worthy of love. We are not alone; our friends are facing very similar struggles. We have to love ourselves enough to allow those past hurts to heal, so that we can live and love in a physically and emotionally healthy way.” Janet Autherine website: http://www.janetautherine.com
