KEEPING YOUR FOOD COOL

Fruits growing in the orchard in July

After what has felt like the longest winter and shortest spring ever, we’ve been enjoying some proper summer sunshine. The only downside is watching the electricity meter spinning as our coldstores work at full tilt, but that is a small price to pay for busier, warmer evenings and sunny weekends. A couple of recent huge thunderstorms have caused havoc with the electricity supply but the generator we installed last winter has meant no major interruption to deliveries. It’s a big beast but capable of running the whole site here at Goudhurst, including all the coldstores, in the event of a mains power cut. A big investment at the time but paying dividends now.

• FINALLY!

In the past couple of weeks we have taken delivery of the first of our new vehicles. These have all been designed and built to our own specification and the hope is that they will make our deliveries a little more efficient and smooth out some of the niggles that both you, our customers, and our own drivers, have from time to time. Initial trials have been very positive, the new design is slightly better on fuel efficiency and the drivers who have managed to get their hands on them love them. The intention is to replace the whole fleet in time. We also hope you like the layout and content of this first new-style newsletter, the work of the newest member of the Turners team, Alex Kilby. Just a couple of weeks into his time with us here and we’re very pleased with the first edition – we hope you like it too. As ever, if you’d like to try anything you see mentioned, please speak to your account manager or call the office directly. We’ve always believed that the proof of the product is in the tasting and we’re more than happy for you to sample anything that takes your fancy.

PLUMPTON COLLEGE Cheese of Distinction

Deep in the Sussex countryside, Plumpton College IS MAKING WAVES WITH ITs impressive range of artisan cheeses

Set at the foot of the South Downs in the beautiful mid-Sussex countryside, Plumpton College can be found within the 900 hectare Plumpton Estate. Originally established as a School of Agriculture in 1926, today the college offers a distinctive range of courses, all of which have their origins in the land. Not only an educational centre of excellence, Plumpton College is also a successful commercial enterprise in it’s own right, producing quality dairy products and giving students the chance to get involved in all aspects of producing farmhouse cheeses for the commercial market. At the heart of this enterprise, The Dairy is a pivotal part of the college farm and has been for over 80 years, since the college ran courses in the surrounding villages to teach dairy farmers the art of cheese making, in the years following The Great War. So important is the dairy unit in fact, that it has recently undergone a significant transformation. The College now boasts high welfare cow cubicle housing, stress-free calving yards and a 36:36 herringbone milking parlour, all of which can be observed from a generous viewing gallery above. As modern and scientific as this sounds, there is a distinct ethos at Plumpton that you would expect from any farmhouse cheesemaker…that happy cows equal good milk. The happy herd, which consists of farm assured Holstein Friesians, is extremely well looked after and all efforts are made to make sure the cows are kept in the best of health.

THE CHEESE LORDS BURGH

£11.95/kg

Under the expert guidance of head cheesemaker Chris Vowles, whose cheesemaking pedigree stems from his early years being raised on a farm in the West Country, the Plumptondown range consists of four excellent cheeses, each with their own distinct style. The whole range is pasteurised, made with vegetarian rennet and, as a nice touch, are named after the fields at the college, on which the cows graze. Firstly we have two soft cheeses: Lynchetts, a soft bloomy rinded white cheese and Woodside, a mould ripened soft blue. Both have a very mellow flavour and are very clean and fresh on the front of the palate, with little in the way of aftertaste. Arguably though, the stars of the show are the two Cheddars: Lords Burgh, a 12 month aged mature and Baromar, a 5 month aged mild. Here we see fine examples of classic, old school Cheddar at its best. You won’t find any harshness or overbearing acidity here, just lots of great, mildly nutty flavour… Just the way a good Cheddar should be!

Vita Coco...

PRA CARAMBA! With a story as vibrant and exotic as the drink itself, Vita Coco is the market redefining super-drink that has taken the beverage world by storm!

We are currently stocking the following Vita Coco products.

91%

is the market share Vita Coco currently holds as the #1 Coconut water in the UK

£2m is the estimated marketing spend by Vita Coco in 2013

The seed was sown in a Manhattan bar in 2003 when founders Ira and Michael, whilst speaking with two young women from Brazil, discovered that the item they missed the most from home was ‘agua de coco’ – Coconut Water. This nutritious drink, which the people of Brazil can’t get enough of, comes from the inside of younger coconuts and is a clear, electrolyte-rich juice that contains zero fat and zero cholesterol. Fast forward ten years and Vita Coco has made a big impact on the non-carbonated beverage business and redefined the alternative sports beverage category. It has become one of the fastest growing lifestyle drinks in both North America and Europe and has become the beverage of choice for film stars, pop stars and celebrities everywhere. In the UK, not only is Coconut water the fastest growing drinks category, but Vita Coco is the fastest growing drinks brand overall.

You might say that people are going (COCO) NUTS for it!
