Introduction

Let’sTalkLiteracyisaseriesofbooksdesigned tosupportthedevelopmentofpupils’ literacyskillsfrom FirsttoSixth Class.Theprogrammeconsiders all aspectsofthePrimaryLanguageCurriculum (2015). Each unitaddresses: • Comprehension • Phonics • Vocabulary • Oral language • Grammar • Writinggenres and thewritingprocess.

Each bookfeatures a varietyoffiction and non-fiction texts as well as engagingextracts from novels and poems.Theseries introduces interesting characters toguidepupils through each book.Acontinuous storyis developed through clozeand comprehension activities.

Comprehension strategies areexplained beforereadingtasks.Thepupil is encouraged tousethesestrategies.Thevocabularyexplored in each unit is sourced from thecomprehension piece, allowingthepupil toseethewords in context.Aselection oflowerand higherorderquestions alsofollow each comprehension piece.

Acomprehensiveapproach totheteachingofphonics is provided in both theFirstand Second Class textbooks. Grammarpoints aredeveloped graduallythroughoutthewholeseries and pupils areregularlyprovided with extension activities forboth phonics and grammartoreinforceand consolidatelearning.

Oral languageis addressed independentlyin each unit. Oral languagetasks areintegrated with thecontentoftheunitand arealsorepresentativeofthelearningoutcomes ofthenewPrimary LanguageCurriculum.

Theseries has focused on all writinggenres and a varietyofopportunities has been provided forpupils toengagewith each genre. Pupils will developan awareness ofthestructureand specificlanguageassociated with each genre.

Digitalresourcesareavailableat www.edcolearning.ie toprovide opportunitiestoreinforcethelearning objectivesintroducedinthetextbook. Teacherplanningdocumentsarealso provided. Thesedocumentsarereflective ofthetextbookcontentandtakethenew PrimaryLanguageCurriculumplanning requirementsintoconsideration. Theyare alsofullyeditableandareeasilyintegrated intopersonalplanningdocuments.
