Adjectives are words that describe a person, place or thing. Tall, sporty and chatty are all examples of adjectives. In Spanish, adjectives must agree in number (singular or plural) and in gender (masculine or feminine) with the noun they describe.

• Adjectives ending in –o in the masculine singular form, change the –o ending to –a in the feminine singular form, and to –os in the masculine plural and –as in the feminine plural.

Tomás es alto.

Ana es alta. Tomás y Rodrigo son altos. Ana y Lucía son altas.

• Adjectives ending in –e and –ista are the same in the masculine and feminine form. Both add –s to form the plural.

Tomás es inteligente. Ana es inteligente. Tomás y Rodrigo son inteligentes. Ana y Lucía son inteligentes.

Tomás es muy deportista. Ana es muy deportista. Tomás y Rodrigo son muy deportistas. Ana y Lucía son muy deportistas.

• Adjectives ending in –ón, án, ín, or or in the masculine singular form, add –a to become feminine singular, add –es to become masculine plural or add –as to become feminine plural.

Tomás es hablador.

Ana es habladora. Tomás y Rodrigo son habladores. Ana y Lucía son habladoras.

• Adjectives ending in other consonants are the same in the masculine and feminine form, for example, mayor (older), menor (younger), joven (young), feliz (happy), popular (popular). To make these adjectives plural, add –es.

Tomás es popular. Ana es popular. Tomás y Rodrigo son populares. Ana y Lucía son populares.

Elgatoesgordo.

The masculine plural form is always used for mixed groups –so even if there were one million girls and one boy in a group, you would still use the masculine plural form to describe them!
