Jericho Petilla. ADI general manager Mr. Gerardo Tee said the project is the first venture in renewable energy of the Lucio Tan Group and the first solar plant built in the province of Batangas. The facility, composed of 8,160 panels, occupies about 27,000 square meters within an industrial area where the 17-hectare ADI plant in Lian, Batangas is located. The Group invested P189 million in the project. According to Mr. Tee, ADI will sell the power generated by the facility to the Batangas Electric Cooperative (Batelco) for P9.68 per kilowatt-hour, the rate approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission for solar energy under the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) scheme. Mr. Tee said that with the solar project, the Group has strengthened its commitment to mitigate the effects of climate change on a more meaningful scale. Meanwhile, Dr. Tan said the facility is the first of renewable energy facilities that the conglomerate is eyeing to build. “This 2-MW facility is just the beginning. We see even greater possibilities, he said.

Thus, last year, TYKFI started to build the Chua King Ha Educational Center classrooms for the Alangalang I Central School, the Holy Child II Barangay Hall with day care area and health center and 57 new houses in San Jose, Tacloban City for the dislocated families in the stricken coastline community. In order to sustain the relief and rebuilding assistance to the community, TYKFI partnered with the TESDA Region 8 Center to design an applicable module in motorcycle serving for unemployed residents of depressed sitios in Alangalang, Leyte. Foundation Founder and Chairman, Dr. Lucio Tan immediately visited Leyte and assessed the massive destruction to the lives, properties and the future of the people and their communities. After visiting Tacloban about five times, Dr. Tan and his team assessed the damages and brought a planeload of emergency assistance and several truckloads of food, medicines, school supplies and other relief items. Realizing that assistance does not stop in providing calamity assistance, Dr. Tan launched last year the Foundation’s Three Year Rebuilding Program wherein he focused on rehabilitating the community and the environment through the reconstruction of schools and homes and livelihood programs. n November 2013, the world was stunned as it watched Yolanda, the strongest typhoon ever recorded in history, destroy thousands of lives and property in Central Philippines. Realizing the urgent need to assist the victims of calamities and address the effects of climate change, the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. (TYKFI) launched in 2014 a three-year program that aims to help the government rebuild the community and the environment in the province of Leyte and the rest of the country.

Rebuilding Communities in Disaster-stricken leyte

A

ccording to Dr. Lucio C. Tan, chairman of the Foundation, the TYKFI program initially provided the victims affected by calamities with basic necessities like food and water and eventually helped them restore school facilities, construct houses and engage in livelihood programs. Dr. Tan said: “The Foundation has adopted this program in line with the government’s thrust to help rehabilitate communities not only in Leyte but in other calamity-prone areas as well through strategic and sustainable projects. The objective of the project is to have a blueprint for a safe and self sufficient community by equipping residents with tools and resources with lasting benefits.” Acknowledging that education is key to the plan to rebuild the community, TYKFI worked with national and local government officials to locate which schools needed to be rehabilitated or which areas needed new

school buildings in Leyte. Upon identification of the sites, the Foundation started to build the standard TYKFI’s Chua King Ha educational centers in Alangalang I Central School with five classrooms and Sulpa National High School with four classrooms. The two new school buildings were inaugurated last February 11, 2015 and March 27, 2015, respectively, with the cooperation of the Department of Education and local government officials. The Foundation also extended housing assistance to residents of Barangay 89, Tacloban City, with the construction of new housing units. A total of 57 families or more than 300 residents shall benefit from this social welfare project upon the completion of these new permanent homes. As additional social support service, the Foundation also built a new barangay hall with a health clinic and a day care center in Barangay Holy Child II, Alangalang, Leyte.

UERMMMC and local doctors lead TYKFI’s Sta. Fe Medical Mission

O

n April 11, 2015, the residents of Sta. Fe in Nueva Vizcaya descended from different barangays and converged at the Chapel of the Divine Mercy for three special reasons: to attend the Holy Mass; to avail of the free medical services from the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc.’s medical team and local volunteers; and to enjoy free haircut from the TYKFI-Hortaleza beauty care trainees and volunteers from the military.

More than 1,000 residents availed of the free consultation and medicine and most of them came early to attend the Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Jerome Ponce. The Sta. Fe Volunteer Group led by former Mayor Teodorico Padilla, Jr. welcomed Mr. Philip Sing and his TYKFI staff, and the volunteer doctors from the UERMMMC pool of medical specialists. The UERM doctors who participated in the TYKFI’s medical mission were: Dr. Fe Aileen F. Arellano - Internal Medicine, Dr. Jessa Marisse E. Marapao - Internal Medicine, Dr. Christian Emmanuel T. Lim – Neurology, Dr. Jose Miguel J. Ambat – 22

Ophthalmology, Dr. Diane D. Gurnote – Ophthalmology, Dr. Donaliz A. Garcia – Pediatrics, and Dr. Maria Patricia Madonna Melisenda C. Navarro – Pediatrics. The Sta Fe local volunteerdoctors were Drs. pulmonary ailments, hypertension, fever, and infections. Elma Barol, 23, came with her threeyear old daughter, Juvilyn to ask for advice and treatment for their ear infection. Ms. Barol said they do not have an established Health Center and health service treatment is on and off. She said: “That is why our community is always open for Medical Mission. And this TYKFI Medical Mission is very effective. It is a big help for us. To sustain the project, please send more doctors next time.” Basilia Baghang, a 72-year old camote planter, said she was happy to learn about the free medical services through her friends. She consulted about her eyes and she got a free pair of eyeglasses. Jessica Latumbo, 42, who is a Volunteer Helper at Divine Mercy Chapel, married, with four children said she consulted the doctors for her kidney problem. She said the project helped them because it offered free consultation. “And it is able to help our Health Center with free medicines. We are very happy with this kind of project. We can sustain the project by means of Tan Yan Kee volunteers from Sta. Fe and the local barangays. As part of Divine Mercy Chapel, I am willing to continue volunteer work for the Parish projects like this.” 23

Barangay Holy Child II have their own place where they could serve their constituents better. A place where there is integrity, a place where there is accountability, a place they can call “home”. This Barangay Hall is the only Barangay Hall with a Day Care Center, a Health Center that the Tan Yan Kee Foundation had ever donated since way back in 1986. Ms. Valerie Tan, TYKFI Corporate Communications Officer said: “Today, the Foundation is inaugurating your Barangay Hall, Health Center, and Day

Care Center. Not only as a dedication to the welfare of the people, but also an Act of Solidarity with you. To help you in your rebuilding and help you to continue to shine fourth as a community. In addition, we believed that the good governance can bring about deep and lasting change. It is “viral” in achieving almost everything from eliminating corruption to ending poverty and alleviating natural disasters. As the saying goes, “Good governance remains merely a philosophy. Thus we are making sure that your community has a venue for 25

excellent governance and accountability.” Mr. Juan Remandaban, Representative, Senior Citizen’s Group said: “Allow me the first few minutes to express my most sincere thanks and gratitude to Ma’am Sarah and the members of the Barangay Council for allowing me to take part in this very special event we had because it needed more than seventy six years before it happened. I shall never again witness the same occasion in my few more remaining years of stay in this wonderful world God made. Very memorable because what I see with my very own eyes now is made possible not by our own but by brothers and sisters whose hearts are full of love and compassion for all of us. So therefore to you our very distinguished guests, I bow in deep appreciation and joy”. Mrs. Marlin Sydiongco, President, Women’s Organization said: “In behalf of all women here in Barangay Holy Child II, we would like to extend our sincere and deepest appreciation to the Tan Yan Kee Foundation. Your contribution to our barangay particularly this beautiful Barangay Hall building will be cherished, not only by the people of barangay Holy Child II but the entire municipality of Alangalang. This is the legacy of Tan Yan Kee Foundation. You deserve our highest praise. A big round of applause to the Tan Yan Kee Foundation. And also a big round of applause to the staff of TYKFI. It is our fervent hope that Tan Yan Kee Foundation will continue supporting us. Again, we are very very grateful for what you have done to our barangay. We salute you. Thank you very much. Hon. Sarah Apurillo, Barangay Captain, Holy Child II, Alangalang, Leyte said: “This gesture of Tan Yan Kee Foundation of giving us this beautiful building is made more meaningful because this is the first time that Tan Yan Kee Foundation is giving a Barangay Hall. First time, because ang sabi nila hindi sila nagbibigay ng Barangay Hall. Ang focus nila ay education. So, andiyan yung mga school buildings, yung mga tsinelas para sa mga bata, school bags, trainings ng mga teachers. Actually, itong Tan Yan Kee Foundation did not come about just after the typhoon Yolanda. Hindi sila bago. They have been all around the Philippines giving help more on education, livelihood, environmental concerns. Thank you for making us no. 1”. From Jurmiel Karev Bayno, Day Care pupil: “I would like to thank the Tan Yan Kee Foundation for helping us build our new Barangay Multi-purpose Hall. Now, we have our Day Care Center. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Maraming Salamat po”.
