“As an architectural graduate from Manchester School of Architecture, I was extremely keen to develop a thorough and diverse set of key skills during my year in practice. I entered a work placement with the greatest opportunity to gain wide-ranging experience. Although it was not the conventional architectural practice work environment, I believed this position of employment would give me the most varied experience. I am an ambitious and challenge-orientated individual and working for Manchester Metropolitan University has helped me obtain the right expertise and drive to pursue a successful career in architecture. My goal is to become a qualiĂžed architect with all the right skill sets to thrive in this profession. These are some design projects I have completed over the last couple of years. Thank you very much for taking a lookâ€? - Eddie Gough

An Institute for the Arts Independent Design Project
This independent design project was an exercise I undertook to understand how my professional experience had contributed to my building design competency. Having worked for the university for 18 months before starting this piece of work, I felt I had broadened by knowledge of architectural design and had an opportunity to create a scheme where I understood the clients requirements. This project responds to a brief the university has written for their next large building scheme. The scheme is currently being developed by Allies & Morrison, an architecture and urban planning practice. However, I thought having access to the brief, the official business case and an understanding of the client gave me a unique opportunity to create my own proposal for the new build. I have designed an Institute for the Arts: Schools of Theatre, Film & Media, consisting of a state-of-theart theatre to house professional performances. The location of the site on the Oxford Road calls for the building to establish a strong urban marker and announce the presence of the MMU Campus. The ensemble of strong architecture lining the south side of the square if poorly exhibited and incomplete with the current dated Mabel Tylcote building. The new build must retain and support the old doric portico facade, preferably to reinstate as a building entrance. The building is to be specifically a Manchester building, rather than a generic modernist block. It must incorporate a open space to be shared by public and students alike to express public, democratic values of the University. This space should be capable of functioning as an attractive public destination with revenue earning potential.

The All Saints Park should be reinvented as the new “Campus Heart”. Grosvenor, the Portico and the new Institute for the Arts should create the“american idyllic campus look”. Closing the roads, removing the fencing and creating an open view would achieve this. In a masterplan scheme I would intend to provide the cafe facilities set out in the brief, however, I would propose to create an outdoor cafe opposite the library, with a main view towards the newly created “View”. The “heart” is then created in the centre of the park; which in turn informs the circulation and connectivity around the campus.

The site of the new school is prominently located on the Oxford Road and has potential to act as an entrance to the University. Campus circulation around the existing Mabel Tylcote Building is extremely poor and the new scheme looks to consolidate the campus by creating campus links. The use of a colonnade around the exterior provides pedestrians with a safer, wider pavement on the Oxford Road. A modern arcade runs straight through the building to enhance campus circulation.

First Floor Plan Independent Design Project
The first floor houses a balcony for the theatre audience. This balcony is accessed by the two staircases located in the space of encounter. The feeling of shared experience and intimacy is enhanced by lowering the balcony, row by row, into the acting space. The interior finishes of the theatre are intended to be durable and modern whilst providing the necessary sound absorption and reflective properties. A series of flexible movement studios are housed on this level. High ceilings and acoustic control through the walls and floors are important to provide specific space for acting and musical rehearsal.

The space behind the portico houses an intimate social learning space. A large glazed wall frames a view over the portico into Grosvenor Square, the heart of the campus. This is a smaller social learning space which provides quieter working environment. The special collections gallery has a glased exterior wall with openable slats for a light controlled environment. These quiet quarters at the back of the building are perfect for the enjoyment of the prestigious special collection exhibitions. Three large movement studios are also located on this floor to benefit from the natural light entering from the series of roof lights.

The Food Security Project Academic Design Project
The Food Security Project was the work I carried out during my third year on the Manchester School of Architecture’s bachelors course. I was in the Intelligent Assemblies Atelier which focused on modelling futuristic extreme weather scenarios and responding to these with a considered architectural programme and building design. My group work consisted of creating a weather condition model for Stockport and in turn look at the infrastructural and social implications of this. Our scenario proposed that the UK would be experiencing severe storms which were remnants of the intense tropical cyclones forming in the Atlantic. These storm were travelling from to tropics to the UK via the jet stream. The programme design is based on a model looking at predictions for 2050 conditions. This year was of interest to us because many of the projections we found were focused on the period between 20402069. The particular year was then chosen because it is featured in the government’s policy to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions by 80% (Climate Change Act, 2008). The considered model look particularly at a large increase in rainfall as well as 3-5 cyclone-type storms occurring a year. These storms were predicted to have winds of between 74 and 130 mph. The model also looks at an increase in Stockport’s population to 380,330 and a reduction in its arable farmland due to top fertile soil layers.

The Levenshulme Community Dance Centre Academic Design Project
The Levenshulme Community Dance Centre responds to prevalent cultural and economic conditions in this strong urban territory of Manchester. The building provides the community with a variety of public spaces which vary in their degrees of enclosure. External and internal theatre spaces are provided in this scheme, with an intention to provide suitable facility for the culturally diverse geographic in Levelshulme.

Birley Fields Student Halls: Gate Design Professional Design Project
On this project, I fully designed, procured and project managed the works from start to finish. The current exterior gates were exposed to the elements and constantly malfunctioning, so the new gateway and gate design were to resolve these issues as well as create an attractive entrance which complements the campus’ modern elegance. The production of full technical drawings and specification on this project furthered my knowledge of structural and waterproof aspects of construction. I also managed the works on site and grasped a grater understanding of the build process.

Geoffrey Manton: New Staff Meeting Rooms Professional Design Project
Over the summer, I designed an project managed the construction of three new meeting rooms into our Geoffrey Manton Building. These were designed to be in line with the building existing interior and all details were representative of the original structure. Due to the estimated contract value for the works, procurement was to be by formal tender as per MMU standing financial and purchasing procedure. A full tender pack was supplied and managed by myself.

Bellhouse Survey and Refubishment Professional Design Project
Bellhouse is a charming 19th century townhouse located on the corner of Grosvenor Square. The building currently houses our marketing department, but is in need of a full service and decoration renewal. I conducted a full survey to obtain detailed drawings of the elevations, services and floor plans, as well as presented some renovation ideas to the department. This included meeting a conservation officer on site and visiting Manchester Council’s archives to obtain historical drawings of the building.

Ormond Executive Suite Professional Design Project
Ormond is a Grade II listed building in the centre of the campus’s historic quarter. The Ormond Project will consolidate the Vice Chancellor with his deputy and Pro-vice chancellors. A new executive suite will sit in the refurbished Ormond facilities. I presented the initial concept design to the Vice Chancellor. Now a £9m refurbishment, designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios, of the Ormond building is underway.
85
John Dalton Atrium Professional Design Project
Our Science and Engineering department, based in the John Dalton Building, asked for a scheme to be looked at where the canteen was opened up into the circulation space. The canteen is currently very dated and there seems to be no visual connection between it and the rest of the school. The circulation within the canteen, between the severy and the two refectories is very poor. The report comprised of three levels of expenditure, with each level looking into greater reconfiguration of the space. Where the cheapest scheme looks at a simple refurbishment and glased opening being applied to the walls, to the more expensive scheme looking at a completely new arrangement of the fixtures.

Cheshire Campus Student Experience Professional Design Project
I have been currently working on updating our student facing buildings in the Cheshire Campus. This year, it was announced our satellite campus would close, therefore the student numbers would drop dramatically as the courses are completed. I have been working on a scheme to consolidate the campus down to a few buildings, to therefore allow some of the less desirable buildings to close. Firstly we have been looking at the refurbishment and rebranding of Student Zone, and the central street which connects the campus.
89
Sandra Burslem: Social Learning Area Professional Design Project
The Law School is lacking a social core at the heart of its building, Sandra Burslem. This report shows a handful of options for opening up the ground floor space and creating a social learning focal point for the law students to congregate and exchange knowledge. These concept designs were presented to the head of school along with indicative costs and a potential programme of works. Whilst working on this report, I visited Steelcase’s showroom. They are a pioneering developer in the higher education field and I have showcased their products in these schemes. Effective collaborative workspaces need to be enhanced with integrated technology and ergonomically designed seating, meaning students can work for longer in an environment less secluded then a quiet library.
