DESIGN PRINCIPALS: DANA ČUPKOVÁ, KEVIN PRATT STATUS: COMPLETED PROGRAM: SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE THE HSU RESIDENCE IS A (LEED CERTIFICATION PENDING) 3900 SQ. FT. HOUSE DESIGNED IN RESPONSE TO THE CLIENT’S STRONG DESIRE FOR AN ENERGY AND COST EFFICIENT DWELLING. THE HOUSE IS A PRODUCT OF A DELIBERATE DIALOGUE BETWEEN FUNDAMENTAL PASSIVE SOLAR PRINCIPLES AND VARIOUS COMPUTATIONAL STRATEGIES. ONE PRIMARY FEATURE OF THE HOUSE IS THE THREE STORY MAIN LIVING SPACE, WHICH FUNCTIONS AS BOTH SPATIAL NEXUS AND A TROMBE WALL ASSISTED VENTILATION STACK. THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE HOUSE FEATURES AN ALL-SEASON SOLARIUM DELINEATED BY A SOUTH-FACING MASS WALL THAT REGULATES THE THERMAL COMFORT OF THE ENTIRE HOUSE.

THE PROJECT IS A SLICE OF WHAT COULD BE IMAGINED AS A LARGER ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE. FUNDAMENTAL LANDSCAPE-PRODUCING OPERATIONS (EXTRUDE, SLANT, SLOPE) ARE ARTICULATED AND MODIFIED TO ACCOMMODATE THE PARTICULAR NEEDS OF THE PROJECT AND THE CLIENT, I.E. SEATING, PASSAGE THROUGH, AND A MODEL PLATFORM. THE UNILATERAL RIB-STRUCTURE ECHOES THE RHYTHMIC AESTHETIC FOUND THROUGOUT THE INTERIOR IN WHICH MODELSCAPE WILL BE HOUSED. THE RIB-STRUCTURE ALSO MIMCS THE METHOD AND AESTHETIC OF PARTICULAR ARCHITECTURAL SITE MODELS - ASSUMING AN APPROPRIATE AESTHETIC AS MODEL BASE.

farmScape IS AN EVENTSCAPE, AN INVOLVED PAVILION THAT REQUIRES THE VISITOR’S HELP TO RE-IMAGINE THE TRADITIONAL PAVILION AS A PROSTHETIC LANDSCAPE THAT SIMULTANEOUSLY HIJACKS AND IMPLANTS WITHIN A LOCAL ECOSYSTEM. A DEVICE OF BOTH NATURAL SYNTHESIS AND PLATFORM FOR THE COMMUNITY, IT TAKES CUES FROM THE TEMPORAL NATURE OF THE BIENNALE AND THE RAPIDLY CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF HONG KONG AS A WHOLE. VISITORS WILL BE ALLOWED TO ‘RENT’ INDIVIDUAL PLOTS WITHIN THE DIA-GRID FIELD AND ENCOURAGED TO PLANT SEEDS OF THEIR CHOICE FROM A CATALOG OF LOCAL CROPS.

THE SAME METHODOLOGY OF A PREVIOUS PROJECT, “metaCAVE v.1,” WAS DEVELOPED INTO A PROTOTYPING EXERCISE TO UNDERSTAND HOW COMPONENT-BASED DESIGN STRATEGIES CAN COME INTO PHYSICAL EXISTENCE. IN DOING SO, THE PROJECT SET ITS DESIGN PARAMETERS AND CONSTRAINTS IN THE CONTEXT OF READILY AVAILABLE BUILDING MATERIALS AND CAD/CAM TECHNOLOGIES. THE DECISION TO BUILD A FULL SCALE PROTOTYPE WAS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO EXHAUSTIVELY INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF FABRICATION OF PARTS AND ULTIMATELY THE FINAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE STRUCTURE.

panda 1.0b IS A HIGHLY CUSTOMIZED SOFTWARE TO VISUALIZE AND DESIGN AN OUTDOOR THERMAL WALL INSTALLATION. THE USER CAN CREATE ANY NUMBER OF WALLS AND ASSIGN TEMPERATURE VALUES AND GRAPHICALLY SEE HOW THEY RELATE TO EACH OTHER AND THE ENVIRONMENT. THE TEMPERATURE VALUES OF THE SPACE (DEFINED BY THE GRID) ARE SHOWN IN TWO COLORS (RED FOR HOT AND BLACK FOR COLD). DESIGN A THERMAL BARRIER, POCKET, ROOM, OR WHATEVER YOUR WILDEST THERMAL DESIRES ARE! ALSO AS A USEFUL FEEDBACK, panda 1.0b VISUALIZES AREAS THAT FALL WITHIN RANGE OF USER-INPUT OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE AS EXTRUDED BOXES. THE HIGHER THE BOXES ARE, THE MORE THEY REPRESENT THE OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE.

neoArcologies IS A SURGICAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE EXISTING BUILDING INEFFICIENCIES INTO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGIES. THE PROJECT FINDS OPPORTUNITIES IN BOTH MAN-MADE AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO REHABILITATE A “SICK” BUILDING INTO A SELF-SUSTAINING ORGANISM WITHIN LOS ANGELES’ URBAN ECOSYSTEM. THE BUILDING AS IT EXISTS PRESENTS SOME OBVIOUS LACK OF PROPER PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES TO OPTIMIZE NATURAL LIGHTING AND VENTILATION, ON-SITE ENERGY GENERATION, AND AN ARCHITECTURALLY INDUCED CULTURE OF “GREEN AWARENESS.” THE PROJECT ADDRESSES ALL OF THESE ISSUES TO GET CLOSER TO “NET-ZERO” STATE.
