Deeprise Deep Learning Based Building Form Design System Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA, USA 2020 This research proposes a new way to model and design a high-rise building form by learning the morphological features that correspond to its own architectural design principles through deep neural networks. This research demonstrates that a deep generative model can grasp highly complex principles of architectural form and that design decisions for new forms can be processed based on deep learning of data. By further developing a generated form into schematic design, the system provides an example of a high-rise building design with a style distinctive to the deep generative model. DID Diagrammatic Image Dataset for Architectural Machine Learning Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA, USA 2019 This research proposes a system and method for generating image datasets for identifying design patterns. Diagrammatic image dataset is a collection of abstracted images synthesized with specific relationships that the user intends to train the neural network to identify patterns in a design. The diagrammatic images are derived from digital geospatial data to abstract information in terms of shapes, colors, and line types. The images are in turn output as rasterized two-dimensional data format that can be used for training neural networks. Generating diagrammatic dataset for identifying design patterns can overcome the challenges of excess noise in the data due to the variegated nature of readily available geospatial information. In addition, this method can allow the users to customize the relationships he/she is interested in training the neural networks with. Collaborators: Jinmo Rhee Pedro Veloso

Panda Experimental Thermal Installation Design Interface Harvard GSD Cambridge, MA, U.S.A. 2010 Written in C++ and OpenGL, Panda is a custom design software / interface created for designers to visualize and design an outdoor thermal wall installation. The user can create any number of walls with variable temperature values and graphically see how they relate to each other and the environment. The temperature values of the space (defined by the grid) are shown in two colors (red for hot and black for cold). One can design a thermal barrier, pocket, room, and more. Also as a useful feedback, panda.exe visualizes areas that fall within range of user-determined optimal temperature as extruded boxes. The higher the boxes are, the more they represent the optimal temperature. Professor: Panagiotis Michalatos

Osage Open Warehouse Art Space openUU Hong Kong, China 2012 Osage Open is a 10,000 sf multiphase warehouse renovation project to create a flexible indoor/outdoor gallery space amidst a busy industrial neighborhood in Hong Kong. While most of the space is characterized by white gallery walls and eclectic use of existing textures, a sizeable wooden box drifts in the center of the gallery space; this wooden box frames the passageway between the indoor gallery and the expansive outdoor terrace. The passageway can be left opened to accommodate fluid connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Depending on usage, the wooden box can flexibly project itself either as a functional element or an unique art piece; such flexibility manages to respect the varying nature of the rotating exhibitions. CIS School Cafeteria Renovation openUU Hong Kong, China 2012 This project is the refurbishment of the 22 year old school cafeteria at Chinese International School. As the school evolves, the cafeteria was no longer able to handle the current student body and activities. The design team and the school directors envisioned an environment that promotes a culture of good interaction and well-being amongst students. Already at its maximum capacity, the previously congested cafeteria is now considerably de-cluttered and open. Newly organized elements of the cafeteria (e.g. serving stations, cashier stands, folding wall) not only efficiently channel the student traffic but the new flexible design can also accommodate a wider range of functions and age groups.
