2016
Welcome to C-Art 2016 C-Art is Cumbria’s largest visual arts project from the award winning Arts Organisation Eden Arts (2015 Cumbria Life Culture Awards).
There will be a fantastic array of workshops and accompanying events offering visitors a true insight into the working processes of the artists involved.
C-Art 2016 will be the biggest yet, encompassing the hugely successful open studios alongside the second Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition, working with the Gallery at Rheged, and the first Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition in partnership with the University of Cumbria Institute of Arts.
C-Art showcases the best of the region’s creative talent in some of the area’s most unusual and inspiring locations. ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’ will return this year to highlight the installations, exhibitions and residencies taking place during the open studio event (you’ll find these located throughout the catalogue in districts). We are fortunate to welcome back some National Trust properties to this years listings.
The flagship event, C-Art open studios, will see over 110 artists, designers and independent galleries spread across 79 venues across Cumbria from 10th - 25th September. Our ‘gallery hubs’ will be on hand as points of information for visitors planning their route and handy maps will be available to accompany your directory.
With thanks to our sponsors and funders who help make the event possible: H&H Reeds Printers, Arts Council England, G1 Creative, ’The Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, Cumbria County Council and Eden District Council.
Visit the C-Art website for updates and more information:
Members are numbered and grouped in the catalogue by 4 different areas of Cumbria. Each area has a focused area map at the beginning of their directory section. We would urge you to use the maps in this catalogue alongside a Sat Nav or Road Atlas. Studios that are particularly difficult to find have additional directions on their profile pages.

EAST MEETS WEST WITH MARTIN MILESMOORE On Thursday 15th September at 2pm, as part of C-Art Martin, from MilesMoore Ceramics, will be taking his raku firing demonstration on tour to the Florence Arts Centre in Egremont. Here he will demonstrate how he has integrated the iconic “egremont red” iron ore into his latest body of work and raku fire pieces of it. Martin says that demonstrating Raku firing, a dramatic and elemental process that brings together, earth, fire, air and water on the site of a former mine feels right. Martin is also hoping to give demonstrations at other sites from where he has sourced materials. Martin has also collected materials such as Shap pink Granite, Coniston Slate and iron ore from Florence Mine at Egremont. This event is weather permitting. The demonstration is free. There will be items of Martin’s work for sale.
FREE PRIZE DRAW
You will be able to sign up to the prize draw by leaving your email address for a chance to win £100 to spend in a C-Art Open Studio or Gallery of your choice. After the event C-Art organisers Eden Arts will send you a very short online survey about your C-Art visitor experience. You won’t receive further e-mails unless you sign up to the C-Art newsletter. We will never pass on your details to a third party. Winner will be selected at random after the open studios event. Sign-up at the artist’s studio or online at www.c-art.org.uk
C-Art studios and venues are divided up into 4 different ‘trails’ showing the different districts in Cumbria. These are colour coded to help you plan your route. Studios and venues vary in their opening times so check before you plan your route. Look out for the yellow C-Art road signs located at each venue, gallery and studios. You can purchase artworks at the venues by cheque, cash or through our Paypal credit/ debit card system allowing you to pay by card whilst in the studios. This service is dependent on internet connection, so please enquire at the individual studios for more information. You can find up to date information on the C-Art website where you will find an interactive map and further details.

Martin Miles-Moore // Adopt a Pot: Raku Demonstration
This traditional Japanese technique has been adapted for western use and is one of the most dynamic and exciting pottery techniques.Pots are heated quickly to a temperature of almost 1000 centigrade and removed from the kiln with metal tongs. The red hot pieces are then placed into sawdust, generating a lot of smoke and flames whilst ‘crackle decoration’ develops naturally. This process means every piece is unique. People booking in advance with Martin will be able to adopt an unfired pot and see it go through the Raku firing process, taking away not just a piece of ceramic art but the memories of seeing your own pot fired on the day. Weather permitting.

Both are situated in passage of landscape of extraordinary quality which has recently again been excluded from designation as a National Park and whose history of ownership and use challenges the narratives of value upon which designation depends.

My pottery is made using white stoneware clay and mainly thrown on the wheel. Most of my pots are functional, but I also make tiles, decorative forms and commemorative plates. I use a combination of bright, bold glaze colours and underglaze slip decoration, often on textured surfaces. I am pleased to be hosting another C-Art member, artist Brian Shields.

Caroline Dalton explores ideas through ‘making’; often executing fastidious detail and working across a range of media to create, simulate or duplicate objects. In the main her work considers a dialogue with ‘place’, and the pieces she creates seek to draw influence directly from their site; leading to a wider analysis of objects & space in terms of ‘concept’, ‘materiality’ and ‘context’. She is interested in paradox and ambiguity e.g. examining concepts of ‘equal & opposites’, ‘pressures and mechanisms’ and themes which echo change.

I make sculptures of animals and of ships, these subjects have become intertwined making contemplative poetic objects. An animal’s body is its vessel through life; and these ships, all sunk in the First World War are vessels voyaging into history. The animals are created from the skeleton outwards, a shamanic recreation of the creature; guardian spirits of a battered world. I have exhibited internationally and nationally. Do come over to see a genuine working studio. Price Range: £200 - £2000

Marilyn’s work reflects the similarities of the Northern Ontario and Cumbrian landscapes. She works from imagination and a photographic memory of spectacular storms, sunrises, sunsets, clouds and windswept pines. Her work begins by floating on layers of paint, shapes and images are formed and moulded, sand and other organic materials may be added. Oil paint is applied to give life, colour and enough detail to clarify the overall image without subduing the initial energy involved in the process. Price Range: £3 - £500

THE GUILDHALL CARLISLE The Guildhall Museum is housed in the upstairs of Carlisle’s only medieval house. The tradesmen of the middle ages found it necessary to protect themselves by forming special associations or Guilds. Carlisle had eight Trade Guilds, and each had one room as a meeting place. The Guilds were Butchers, Merchants, Shoemakers, Skinners, Smiths, Tailors, Tanners and Weavers. Rosie Galloway-Smith will be working with the public to populate a large fabric map of the flooded Carlisle city centre with embroidered names and stories in this 14th century building With thanks to Tullie House.

Painting in oils and acrylics and sculpting in epoxy, wood and plaster, I explore ideas of metamorphosis, romanticism and man’s tenuous connection with nature. My most recent body of work depicts the life of a poet through a mythical and surreal narrative. I will also be showing a selection of oil studies of the North Cumbrian landscape and a display of bird paintings behind part-mirrored glass. This year I have the pleasure of exhibiting alongside the work of potter, John Anderson. Price Range: £100 - £2000

ULLSWATER SHORES: By the Park Foot Footpath artist Rachel Fenwick will present her installation ‘Looking for a Sign’. The installation features a series of handmade sign posts. Some portray the traditional Cumbrian road sign and others replicate a much further afield location’s road sign- Australia. These signs depict the country’s uniform railway crossing signs. The installation uses the beautiful Lake Ullswater as an extraordinary backdrop for it's viewers to contemplate the directions they’ve chosen to follow in life. The signs reject their principle purpose and instead point towards significant dates and times. Asking us to reflect upon our own lives, the installation invites us to consider the crossroads we’ve been at, and how those big decisions have impacted upon our day to day life. The location of the artwork is near Pooley Bridge. For details of opening times and directions please see the artists pages (listed above)

In my work I like to capture the landscape or objects around me in as fresh and immediate a way as I can always looking for rhythm and texture as well as colour in my subject matter. With a graphic design background I am intrigued by any way of making marks on paper and so use a variety of media.

My work explores ideas of time, speed and motion. Birds have been a point of focus recently, their speed and weight, twists and turns, changes of pace. My paintings begin with walking and sketching outside. Once in the studio I allow the materials to lead the way until eventually the colours, marks and splashes take on a life of their own - the subject matter becomes the paint. This balance between representation and abstraction fascinates me, catching a moment and reinventing it in paint. Price Range: ÂŁ1 - ÂŁ3000

Landscape can often provide the initial inspiration for my work. Using my imagination I then transmute the image, yet it still retains a suggestion of reality. I enjoy losing myself in this imaginary space and am pleased when the painting is complete if more than one interpretation can be found. Exhibitions include The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, and the Sunday Times Watercolour competition. Paintings, prints and greeting cards for sale.
Living in the village of Glenridding, overlooking Lake Ullswater has created the inspiration for much of my artwork.I like to sketch and paint outside, capturing the colours of the changing seasons, and then completing my work in a variety of media, watercolour, pen and ink, pencil, pastel, acrylic, or oils, whichever I feel is the most suitable for the subject. I frequently draw from life, producing portraits in pencil, watercolour, or pastel. Prices from £60 to £360 and cards are available.

Colour, shape and texture, that’s the beauty of working with wool, and that’s why I love it. Felt-making can feel a little like alchemy, the transmutation of wool, where the combination of different materials and techniques result in a wide variety of outcomes. I enjoy painting with wool to produce artwork, but my main passion is coaxing 3D forms from this natural, renewable product, with felt lights a new interest for this year.

Fine Art graduate from Nottingham Trent University, Rachel Fenwick is an artist who primarily works in contemporary sculpture. Her practice is concerned with place. In particular the spaces where we share our most memorable moments. Born in Lancashire and currently based in Cumbria the artist questions the spaces we call home. Linking place and time she invites her viewers to consider the directions they’ve chosen to follow in life, how their identity has been influenced by those decisions. Paintings in oil and watercolour, inspired by landscape, buildings and light. Colour, line and texture are important in my work – expressing my feeling for the place and the mood. My style is loose, somewhere between impressionist and expressionist, leaving a little, I hope, to excite your imagination. Subjects include the Lake District Fells, Eden Valley and Scottish coast.
My work is an abstract exploration of the formal and physical aspects of painting - colour, tone, shape, texture, pattern, line, etc. Often it is also an intuitive response to various aspects of landscape. The ambiguity of representing space on a flat surface is a central concern. Sizes vary from small paper pieces to large canvases and occasionally to architectural scale commissions for public buildings.

I consider myself lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area. Watercolour is such an amazing medium its translucent qualities make it such a frustration but at the same time sets it apart from any other medium, its ability to move and mix on the paper is fascinating and addictive. We all touch the paper differently, in the same way that our hand writing is unique so are our brush strokes. When I paint I try to capture the essence of the subject the soul.

There are three floors to the 17th century barn that make up our farm shop, craft, gift, and clothing galleries. Exhibiting the work of local artists throughout the year, we are delighted to be showing the work of Marjorie Park & Kirstin Pilling during C-Art 2016. ‘Feeling the Fells’ unites both artists’ love of the land around Sizergh, in particular the distinctive domes seen on the fells created by meadow ants. Marjorie is drawn to expressive interpretations of the ancient landscape surrounding her rural home & Kirstin’s work is underpinned by an interest in the senses; particularly touch which is demonstrated in unique ultra tactile, textile soft sculptures using local fleece.

My work is heavily influenced by my surrounding landscape. I paint as a response to living, working and walking in the landscape. I often compose my paintings with thick, textured paint - loosely applied. I wish to convey a sense of place, and the physical process of mark-making is an engagement with the environment around me. For C-Art I have an exhibition of new work.

My paintings are wary of the tradition that goes before them. I reference a historical type of painting, the landscape, the portrait, the still life, for example, but then I infuse the subjects with a contemporary female overview. My latest paintings are re working the scribble which over layers the chosen imagery. The scribble represents the spontaneous and the frivolous, traits generally attributed to the female. I have painted in oils since childhood. Nowadays, I like to cycle out to paint en plein air whenever possible in my local Lakeland valleys. I call the results “oil sketches”. Ideally I produce, in about 3 hours, a good, lively-looking painting which can be hung, still wet, as soon as I get it home. You can see my portfolio at: www.artistsandillustrators.co.uk/ painterpete/artwork and www.facebook.com/peter.brook.925 (in photo album “Portfolio”). Price Range: £0.50 - £500

It’s not what you see but how you see it. My work is driven by a desire to share my response to the landscape. I want the work to have that sense of peace and connection to the Cumbrian landscape that I feel as I am making it. I like to hand stitch because I like the sound of the needle going through the cloth and the time it takes to complete helps the work to settle. I use natural fabrics and hand dye them to get exactly the colours I need. Price Range: £2 - £200

I currently concentrate on relief printmaking as the medium where I can best explore my interest in chromatic colour, in multiples. I moved on from making large lino prints using this method, to engraving small endgrain wood blocks and find enormous interest in the necessary forward planning of area and colour. Also I will be showing lithographs and etchings from earlier periods.

I have always painted, mainly landscapes, mainly mountain scenes but also coastal scenes, often including figures and other elements to help with scale and sense of place. Strong use of colour and texture have always been a major part of my work. My interests and activities in the fells around my home and further afield are all part and parcel of my paintings. Originals, prints and cards of my work will be available at my studio during C-Art. Price Range: ÂŁ2 - ÂŁ2000
