Carlisle

C-Art is Cumbria’s largest visual arts project, awarded ‘Tourism Event of the Year’ at the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2014. This year around 200 artists, designers and independent galleries will open their doors to the public from 13 – 28 September. Co-ordinated by Eden Arts, C-Art promotes and celebrates Cumbria’s abundant creative talent, inviting visitors to step into the gallery and beyond to see art, buy art, explore the landscape and meet the makers. In addition to the popular open studios and gallery events, this year’s C-Art will feature ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’ - artists working in extraordinary locations, a new award for a Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year, and selected Micro-Commissions in the landscape, as well as a host of exhibitions, workshops and associated events. It’s a perfect time of year to experience Cumbria’s beautiful landscape and to see art situated in some of the UK’s most picturesque towns and villages. See how work is made, talk to artists, watch demonstrations and visit private studios that are usually closed to the public.

Visit the C-Art website for updates and more information: www.c-art.org.uk

Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year

Guide to C-Art Open Studios

10 12

All C-Art studios and venues are divided into 5 different ‘trails’ which are colour coded to help you plan your journey. Studios and venues vary in their opening times - check before you plan your route – especially for outdoor locations and installations. C-Art 2014 launches an exciting new award for a Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year. Over 85 artists aged 15-24 entered the competition for a chance to win a £500 cash prize and Derwent limited edition pencil box worth £500. The award aims to help the professional development of artists’ working practice and career, and shortlisted entries are featured on a dedicated online gallery on the new C-Art website. The winner of the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year will be announced at the ‘C-Art at Rheged’ launch event on 11th September.

Watch out for yellow C-Art road signs all over Cumbria pointing you to a C-Art studio, gallery, installation or event. You can purchase artworks at the studios by cheque or cash, be aware that card payment facilities may not be available. Please wear suitable clothing for outdoor sites and take supplies if you are climbing a mountain! All updated information can be found on the website, where you can find locations and check artist’s details.

Wolves, bison and deer roam the studio, alongside paintings of their habitat. I see the animals as Guardian Spirits, symbols of wilderness, and its loss... meditations on both the resilience and fragility of life. Much of the work references deep time, but recently images of WW1 have appeared; a warning against a certain mind-set and continuing the exploration of pathos and memory. I have exhibited nationally and in several international shows. Address West Walls Studios, Rickerby Buildings, Currock Rd, Carlisle, CA2 4AU.

Renuka Saxena8 I use drawing, painting and mixed media to express a poetry of nature, bearing witness to the play of light and dark, and relationships of colours. Seemingly chance juxtapositions resolve into the significant horizon, silhouette or lines of motion. I wish my work to reflect a state of presence. I am working on new works using ink, watercolours, and oils on paper and canvas.

Delia Stevens10 My watercolour impressions are inspired by the north west of Cumbria. Though little known by comparison with the Lake District, the quality of light and space on the Solway Firth and the ever changing sky often tempts me out to paint. In contrast, ink drawings and more detailed paintings of flowers, people and animals show a different aspect of my work.

Rebecca Payn33 As a painter and printmaker I work in a variety of media. I particularly love the immediacy and subtlety of oil paint and with it, exploring that exciting area between description and abstraction – where the smallest nuances of paint, both intended and accidental, play an important role in the picture as a whole. Themes include people, interiors and still lives.

Linda Moore60 Linda has been creating a portfolio of large panoramic photographs of Cumbria since 1999, questioning people’s need to find psychological space in the Lake District: This evolved from an interdisciplinary fine art degree looking at societies need to ‘evolve to fit,’ in order to survive. Her photomontages show ‘layers of life.’ Visually, her paintings and printmaking are mainly colourful sunsets and textural waterfalls.

Becky Eden61 I work with wool to make useful items and decorative artwork. I love the simple process of combining wool with water, they are both abundant in Cumbria! I use hardwearing wool for slippers, naturals for the sheep, and silks/threads for decoration. Wool has great natural properties; renewable, warm, flame resistant, strong and breathable. I am always happy to chat about wool, felting and sheep! (online at ‘Felt from the Fields’)

Julia Stanton62 This year we are holding two exhibitions at the new Sharrow Gallery at Thwaitehill Farm, overlooking Ullswater. One is the first stage of our Faces of Ullswater project, for which Julia Stanton and Gina Farncombe are painting the portraits of people local to Ullswater born between the two world wars. The second is an exhibition of Julia’s landscapes, birds, and still lifes. Both artists have very different styles, making for an exciting and provocative exhibition. I remain deeply interested in the process of printmaking, and in how methods such as collagraph and monoprint present their own opportunities and unforeseen paths of investigation. I love creating subtle surfaces on printing plates, mostly by unorthodox, low-tech means, and connecting their printed appearance to the textures I see in the landscapes around me in Cumbria. Sometimes these textures find their way into clay and become a ceramic piece.

My recent oil on canvas paintings are in the old tradition of landscape, and yet are out-of-the-ordinary Cumbrian landscapes. Inspired by The Impressionist Movement, my style is bold and bright, the brushwork energetic. As a former photojournalist, I’m now exploring a relatively peaceful and cathartic environment, such is my response to the landscape where I live and work now. I will also be exhibiting some of my paintings during C-Art at Goosewell Farm, in Keswick.

Keith Snell121 Surrounded by the Cumbrian landscape, it would be surprising if this were not reflected in my images. But a passion for travel also influences the sources for my inspiration. D F Furniture and Timber140 Danny Frost established a furniture making business at Lowmoor in 2001. Eleven years on, Huw Lowden & Steven Younger now run the business creating furniture pieces inspired by years of working alongside Danny. The clean lines of the furniture contain the timber’s character, creating a striking contrast between the nature of local wood and a dynamic skills of decades of craftsmanship. Much is made using locally sourced sustainable timber.

Anna Blair149 I am a textile artist, I create silk shibori wall art and accessories. My inspiration comes from the natural world, with subtle but intricate details of plants and flowers reflecting empathetically the textures I create within my work.
