C-Art Open Studios catalogue 2012

Page 1

Welcome to C-Art Open Studios 2012

The Cumbrian landscape inspires and divides, brings us together and separates us. We all share and revel in its beauty, but often when we try to work collaboratively the pointy stuff makes that extremely hard in practice. Travelling from Alston to Millom, or Silloth to Sedbergh will always delight but in practical terms for the artists of this county it can be a challenge to connect. C-Art draws artists together across the county so that they can be collectively recognised and celebrated. The challenge of our rural place (as opposed to a collective of artists in an urban place) is also one of its delights, we know that we are not over stating ourselves when we say that this is certainly one of the most beautiful open studio events in the country. The inaugural C-Art in 2011 saw over 8000 visits to artists’ studios, a phenomenal success. It told us that this was something we must continue to do. Our arts are a key part of what this county has to offer to both visitors and residents alike. Our purpose is to allow you to share what we have, fantastic art in a beautiful place. Presents 6 C-Art artists talks and Q+A session

Brand New Publication Launch

We’ve teamed up with award winning Lake District tour specialist Mountain Goat to organise a very special tour of just some of the south lakes studios taking part in C-Art.

These speaker events have a very dynamic Pecha Kucha 20 x 20 format (with each of the artists showing 20 images and speaking for 20 seconds) followed by a question and answer session. These events provide a platform for the C-Artists to talk about their creative process and to directly connect with other talented local artists and makers.

Look out for The Fire Crane, the new (and free) publication produced by our New Writing Cumbria project, launched to coincide with C-Art.

Founded 40 years ago, Mountain Goat pride themselves on an exciting and inspiring choice of guided sightseeing tours around the beautiful Lake District. Where

Foreword

Sarah Maxfield Area Director North Arts Council England

Like many of us, when I go somewhere new for a weekend or longer I like to check out what’s going on locally – and a recurrent frustration is how hard it can be to find out what there is to do and see if you don’t already know where to look! I end up with a bag stuffed full of bits of paper having trawled the leaflet racks in coffee shops and garden centres – and, sadly, many of those galleries, fairs, studios and events go unvisited because I’m not sure how long it will take to get somewhere that seems well off the beaten track or if there will be other things in the vicinity that mean I can make a day of it. I’m sure it’s my loss! C–Art was a newcomer on Cumbria’s cultural scene last year – but an immediate success, attracting around 8000 visitors. It’s a great achievement for those involved but I’m not really surprised – we know that there’s a great appetite to experience the arts, and that being able to visit an artist in their home or studio adds an extra layer of interest. Having been lucky enough to live in the Eden Valley for a while I know that Cumbria is full of artists, designers, craftspeople, photographers and designers – often tucked away working at home or with work on show in small galleries. C–Art shines a spotlight on those artists – making them visible to visitors and reminding Cumbrians about the wealth of creativity on their doorstep. Twenty years or so ago a visit to Cumbria was all about the outdoors – fellwalking, mountaineering, sailing – and those things are still at the heart of tourism, exploiting the incomparable landscape as they do. But nowadays Cumbria also puts its’ rich culture on show to visitors too - and is attracting new and different people all year round as a result, helping to grow this essential part of the local economy. Internationally, and especially in the UK, culture is one of the main drivers of tourism – and among the fastest growing. Eden Arts is at the forefront of making this link, showcasing the rich mix of events, attractions and culture available locally. C–Art is a great example of something that is happening more and more – artists collaborating to bring their work to public attention, creating a sense of occasion through an event and presenting it in an eye catching way which makes it easy to construct a morning, a day, a weekend’s visit. No more need for bags stuffed full of bits of paper!

I’m a potter, married to Hannah, a basket maker. Our work is influenced by the enviroment in which we live. I make stoneware using throwing & hand building techniques, incorporating local materials in glazes; such as the sand of the Solway. The pots are fired in a woodfired crossdraught kiln for up to 48 hours. Although interested in primative mark making, it is more important to let the clay speak with it’s own voice. S

I don’t feel restricted in any way when it comes to subject matter; in fact my paintings often seem to have a mind of their own and this makes each one unique in style. I paint for the pleasure of it and feel most at home with acrylic paint. If others like my work then that’s a bonus. I’m part of a small group of artists who paint together at Bowness-on-Solway each fortnight. S

I have a passion for working with wood, expressing its natural beauty within a contemporary design. All my timber is locally sourced and is obtained sustainably, for example from fallen or storm damaged trees. My preferred style is ‘minimalist’, using a simple design which allows the wood to express its own qualities. This often includes natural edges, knot-holes, burrs, spalting, and other naturally-occurring imperfections. Each piece is truly unique. S

Children tend to be the predominant theme that features in my more recent paintings & drawings; inspiration comes from the reality of my own memories of growing up in the Eden Valley; I also have a fascination with looking through photograph albums. Some of the images are on canvas but I also work on paper; detailed pencil drawing with subsequent layers consisting of washes of acrylic, oils, or wax; sometimes scratching into the surface. S

I started out painting and selling in watercolours and pastels, moving on to designing on china and tiles. I am now obsessed with the whole process of painting in oils, celebrating their richness and depth of colour, producing a sumptuous palette to translate the world around me on to canvas - hens, dogs, guinea fowl, still life, landscape anything that captures my eye. Forever moving on and learning.

As a landscape painter I am always excited by the changing weather and light. Recent work has focused on the fells close to home, as well as trips to the Hebrides. I am interested by the impression that a place leaves on my mind. More than just how it looks, an amalgamation of senses and perception. This year I am in my new studio, where there will be some large canvases as well as small paintings on board.

This year I will be displaying my paintings at Alison’s studio on the south side of the A66. I feel my work is changing and developing at the moment and drawing is beginning to play a larger roll in the paintings. My work is based on the local landscape and other places recently visited with the fell sides, rockscapes and figures playing a major part. I want viewers to have a real sense of the place whether it’s obvious or just suggestive. S

My subject matter is wide-ranging, always chosen for its poignancy to my life at any given moment. Since 2009, I have regularly photographed my grill pan soaking in the sunlight. The resulting images are dislocated from their original source and hint at larger subjects such as…well, I leave that to you. I have faithfully transposed these images into oil paintings, incorporating cast resin and paper relief elements. S

My work focuses on the moment of doing and my interaction with a medium, such as painting, photography and performance. I often present and document actions or happenings which strip bare processes and ideas of painting. I like to immerse myself in paint’s entropic nature; by straddling the abstract and figurative I may find myself in one moment with paint up my nose, then in the next meticulously drawing a nose. S

Since childhood I have kept sketch books but only recently have I had the chance to paint regularly. My aim is to capture the essence of my subject and convey the delight I experience in exploring it. This year I have been investigating a less representational approach, both in my research and in my work. Having started with oils, I am now enjoying a wide variety of media but the high point of my year is still a warm day out, painting en plein air. S

Danny Frost established a furniture business at Lowmoor in 2001. Ten years on, Huw Lowden & Steven Younger create furniture pieces inspired by years of working alongside Danny. The clean lines of the furniture contain the timber’s character, creating a striking contrast between the nature of local wood and dynamic skills of decades of craftsmanship. Much is made using locally sourced sustainable timber; helping the environment and keeping the character of Cumbria alive.

On display will be a range of paintings and wide variety of subject matter in oils, watercolour, ink or mixed media. In addition there will be limited edition prints, a selection of travel sketches and works in progress. A recent cycling trip in India has me buzzing with ideas. I gave many of my travel sketches away (rapid pen portraits) but the sketching process ingrains images and, along with photographs, form a sound basis for studio painting. Watch this space! S

I am a paper artist and work with raw fibre which is beaten into a pulp in a Hollander Beater. The fibre used is linen cotton and abaca hemp plus local plants. I know that my work is abstract but in essence ideas come from landscape and cloudscape as well as the pulp itself.

My aims are to produce ceramics that are interesting, accessible and affordable and encourage people to look afresh at the natural world. My inspiration comes from the natural colours, textures and forms found in the Cumbrian countryside. All my work is hand-built, mostly in stoneware. I make pieces based on leaves, bark, shells, fungus and lichen, including wall collages, hanging pieces, small sculptures, and a variety of dishes, bowls and vases. All my pieces are individual. S

At the time of pressing the shutter a decision is made to either use colour, black & white, apply a filter etc. I never ’photo shop’ my photographs as I am of the belief that sometimes it makes photos just a little too perfect. So, once the picture is taken, that is it! Everything in nature has a little flaw somewhere, that’s what makes some things so beautiful - Hence my motto:- ‘ The Camera Never L’Eyes.

I work in paper in two formats. As a bookbinder, I make hardback sketchbooks and journals. I use a variety of materials for decorative covers: art papers, found materials, old maps, fabrics. I intend my books to be used, to be an affordable and practical item. As a printmaker, I produce relief prints (linocuts, woodcuts) and intaglio prints (drypoint etchings) which are based on the landscape and wildlife of my native West Cumbria. S

I like to make beautiful or thoughtprovoking wall hangings or framed pieces, as well as more practical craft items such as tea cosies, cushions, bags and accessories. I just love to sew and create, and even better to share my passion to encourage others to get creative through workshops. S

I love to explore how what is going on above or below a surface can affect it, and be expressive. I work in print and clay to explore these things. A subtle change of surface on a printing plate affects the way the ink sits, and therefore how it prints. Textured clay holds oxides, slips or glazes in ways that remind me of elemental processes around me. One experiment tends to lead to other ideas and experiments.

Partly self taught, inspired and encourage by some great tutors during 18 years of watercolour painting. My passion never wanes, I love watercolour for its ability to surprise when you allow it to do what it wants creating the happy accident. I particularly enjoy painting skies and trees, my work can be loose ‘wet into wet’ to very detailed ink and wash covering various subjects; landscapes capturing the atmosphere, buildings and flowers, in a traditional or contemporary style. This present phase of my artistic life started about eight years ago when I learned to dance the Tango. Teaching art in secondary schools for 35 years had finally dulled my senses. The creativity involved in dancing gradually spread through to my artistic urge, and all the work of the last year has been inspired by the dance and the people involved. The ideas are continually being enriched by my working processes and now are spreading to landscape work. S

The work exhibited this year includes a recent series of portraits depicting characters from around Whitehaven. Many people have commented that quite often the chaps that I paint don’t seem to live for very long afterwards, this unfortunately has been mainly true. Nothing to due with me. Honest. Each picture has a story attached to it, come along and I shall tell you some of them. There will be an eclectic mix of polemic work, including photographs, sculptures and objects. S

I am making a transition from working mainly with acrylics to exploring different media: oil, Indian inks, photography, Adobe + IPad applications. My intention is the creation of exciting, vibrant, dramatic and engaging images by incorporating techniques of the old masters and innovative software developments, to evolve my own unique style. I am a potter and I decorate pottery made with my husband from stoneware and earthenware, in a variety of shapes and glazes. Wasdale, my closest valley is a source of inspiration for my pictures as well as pots. How to encapsulate what I see and feel in this amazing, ever changing valley, is a constant challenge. So are people as I draw them. Portrayng the countryside and people around me, in pencil. pastels, paint and clay is endlessly fascinating. S

Following a successful career as a graphic designer I have now returned to Cumbria, working from my home overlooking the Ravenglass estuary. Working in several media, watercolour, gouache and pastels, I also make limited edition reduction wood and linocuts. It is the effect of light and colour within the landscape that fascinates me inspiring an energetic and vibrant style. S

I am a portrait painter. I invite people to sit for me. I paint from life mostly they are painted in one day. I work in oil on unsized fine linen. I try to make the session an informal experience. Exhibiting: ‘Portrait of the artist’ with artists’ responses to their portrait. I live in the corner of a field with ancient trees, wild plants and my garden flowers, all of which influence my watercolours.

My paintings evolve organically around a wide range of subjects. I love what happens when experimenting with different techniques and materials. The scope of my interest seems endless, so my work is constantly changing in response. I use gouache for the watery effects it can produce and for its depth of colour. Much of my recent work is acrylic or mixed media based around acrylic paint, which I find wonderfully free and expressive. S

Robert Fletcher has lived in Satterthwaite since the early 1970’s, having moved to work as a forest worker based at the Grizedale Forest Park. From an early age Robert used the influences of his workplace and surrounding environment to create his own style of bird and wildlife studies. The use of pencil and crushed pastel has been developed to reflect the forest, resulting in atmospheric images; of misty woodlands, colorful sunsets and spectacular sunrises. S

Painting on silk - vibrant coloured dyes and a lustrous fabric - what a combination! These together with the ancient skills of batik are used in a fresh way to convey my delight in the Cumbrian landscape. As a keen walker, the rich succession of wild flowers along the hedgerows and the drama of high ridges, crags and scree slopes provide both inspiration and challenge for a life-time. Visitors are very welcome to my home - see my work and enjoy a cup of tea! S

I am fascinated by light, colour and transience in nature. I work in the etching process by drawing with a point, gouging out the metal or by etching the copper plate with acid. Thus the plate is printed in black and white also colour, sometimes combining with monoprint. Current themes are ‘Wildlife’ especially butterflies and birds also ‘Gardens of the World’ featuring orchids. Monotype and woodcut are exciting processes. Editions are small. Views from the studio are amazing! S

As, primarily, a printmaker most of my work falls into two categories; 1. Mages based on biological and geological subjects, which I have reinterpreted in a humorous and ironic way. I hope to evoke a feeling of unease, with a suggestion of other worlds and Science Fiction imagery never far away. 2. Everyday or banal subjects given a twist. I enjoy making reduction relief prints as the results are not entirely predictable and that’s where the fun is! S

After many years working as a curator I started to develop my own line drawing style during a tour of Italy. While I was the curator of Keswick Museum I took a Printmaking class at Carlisle and became fascinated by aquatint etching. Since then I’ve branched out into drypoint, monoprinting and linocuts. My work is principally concerned with buildings. I‘m particularly inspired by the Fellside area of Kendal and by the idea of industrial skylines transferred into the countryside. S

I’m a contemporary portrait and figure artist creating realistic, sensitive and vibrant paintings in acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Blending the natural beauty of figures and faces with textures and digital montages, to capture moments in time and emotions that are familiar to all of us. I’m inspired by music and song lyrics, fashion photography, Renaissance art and the painters Daren Baker, Fabien Perez and Charlotte Atkinson.

I make sculptures from found objects, which then form the basis of paintings and drawings. Working in both pencil and multiple layers of oil paint, I strive to create a sculptural depth in my works; Dreamscapes that suggest imagined worlds and fantastical experiences. In 2011 I received second prize for regional competition ‘Open Up North’, and am delighted to be exhibiting in ‘Francis Bacon to Paula Rego; Great Artists’ at Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal (runs until Sept 16 2012.)

My current work is a personal response to a recent visit to China recorded in journals and sketchbooks. I am working towards a joint exhibition at the Brewery Arts Centre and at Sizergh Castle in 2013. The focus is on the juxtaposition of old and new cultures, traditional and innovative materials- hand carved and mass produced, stone and plastics. I work mainly in acrylic on canvas and paper and produce etchings on a small Rollaco press in my studio.

My work is based on the landscape around me; rivers, fells and coast. I use a free and partly abstracted approach, sometimes more abstract, sometimes more representational. Colour, mood and atmosphere inspire me to play with texture and paint surfaces. I am also exploring print, and love developing Collographs and Woodcuts. I will also be having an exhibition at Farfield Mill in Sedburgh from 6th October themed as “Waterways” which explores coast, river and canal.

The Scar Gallery

The Scar Gallery will be showing paintings by David William Morris and Caroline A. Metcalfe-Gibson. This gallery serves also as David’s studio. David says, “working in oils, pastel, acrylic and watercolour, my paintings are varied, often landscape, interesting colour, poetic”. My work is making ceramic forms that express the spaces we live and the environments we pass through. Vases, bowls, dishes, planters and plaques are individually hand-built using earthenware clay. Layers of decoration built up with porcelain inlay, impressed textures, coloured slips and transparent glaze. Sketchbook drawings and paintings of landscape, architecture and plants form the basis of my designs. Imagery is inspired and interpreted from the places I have lived. S

The inspiration for my work comes from my every day surroundings. The changing light on the landscape, flowers and patterns created in old patchwork quilts. I use dyed fleece as my artistic medium, all my pieces felted from different wools. Merino, Blue Faced Leicester, Gotland and Wensleydale to name but a few. As well as creating pictorial pieces I make bags, scarves, pots, cards and corsages.

My work is an abstract exploration of the formal and physical aspects of painting - colour, tone, shape, texture, pattern, line, etc. Often it is also an intuitive response to various aspects of landscape. The ambiguity of representing space on a flat surface is a central concern. Sizes vary from small paper pieces to large canvases and occasionally to architectural scale commissions for public buildings.

My work is all to do with the physical substance of paint and the process of applying it, pushing it around without getting too bogged down in detail. I paint fast and am barely conscious of the brush stokes. Bursts of intense energy are interspersed with evaluation. During this process the image can change many times before I am happy with the result. Recent and recurring themes explore the seasonal cycle of growth renewal and decay in nature. S

Before discovering acrylics I worked mainly in watercolour and pencil, and although sometimes envious of the capabilities of skilful oil painters, I’m afraid I’m of the opinion that for me, life is just too short to work in that medium (drying times frustrate me no end!) Even with acrylics I may take a hair-dryer to the surface to speed up the process (being bald, I have no other use for a hair-dryer!) I will paint most subjects, but it is colour and texture which excites me. Must get on! S

I am a self taught visual artist. My education was in the sciences, which inspires my drive for accuracy. Most of my work is commissioned portraits in pastel or pencil, and my aim is to give happiness to the subjects family. Sometimes I am asked to do a posthumous portrait which I take as a great responsibility. This year, I am experimenting with new formats. I enjoy painting ACEO size miniatures in acrylics, or pen and ink. S

In my studio, you will find various pictures, prints etc, often completed in different media. These might include oils, watercolour, acrylic and/ or charcoal. These media offer me a chance to experiment with, for example, texture, depth, surface and composition. Some things hold particular meanings and can act as Symbols for me - horses, landscapes and domestic objects; these form the greater part of my work. S

Visitors will receive a warm welcome and find a relaxed atmosphere in which to browse. As a painter and printmaker I use oil paint, stone and plate lithography and digital print. In my most recent work I have been focussing solely on creating oil paintings. I love the immediacy and subtlety of oil paint and exploring the area between description and abstraction, where the smallest nuance of paint, where intention and accident can combine to suggest, rather than precisely describe, an image. Recent themes range from interiors, to books, to landscape. S

My work focuses on a combination of my fascination of discarded or derelict objects and the desire to preserve them through artwork. Also the obsession we have with collecting tokens from our journey through life. Inspiration is drawn from the hidden stories and journeys from inanimate relics and decay. I use photography and printing and love the way light and colour transcends the images and projects prismatic light, thus breathing new life into the subject material. S

I produce work without narrative and verbal content, work that exists to be experienced. I want to leave my work open to the formation of ideas and concepts. I tend to work with any materials that fit or relate to my working process. Recently through using digital photography and video I have created work which is concerned with process and capturing a sense of energy.

I produce decorative, functional ceramics, using both hand building and slip-casting techniques in Porcelain and Bone China, with emphasis on the surface decoration. Techniques include inlaying slips, water erosion, printing, impressing and applying sprigs with lustres. I also use transfers created from manipulated images, particularly in my jewellery, resulting in an eclectic collection, generated from familiar female role models, historical artefacts and collected treasures. Mary’s pottery is inspired by food and drink and our continuous relationship with it. She is particularly interested in the way that colour can be used to inspire the mind as well as compliment the food, so this work is titled a ‘Visual Feast’ The pots are all wheel thrown and altered to give them Mary’s distinctive ‘square’ finish. They are then glazed in colours of the Lake District seasons, Spring Green, Summer Blue, Autumn and Winter White. S

Brougham Hall Ice House A site specific installation of sound and music, light and dark, pattern and illusion by Jilly and Bryony Jarman Pinto. Using treated orchestral sounds with sung and spoken word, music threads through the sculptures responding to the changing light patterns of the space. Layers of wax, oil paint, paper, collage and scraffito are revealed within the glass works. Further works on display in the Fusion Cafe. S

I’m showing woodcut prints characterised by saturated colour, repeating motifs, and overlaid slabs of decorative patterning. They re–investigate aspects of early Modernism, and draw on organic and vernacular forms, and global textile designs. I want to draw the viewer into the work to suggest interior spaces of architecture and the mind, and layers of human consciousness that might predominate in dreams, and meditative states. S

The work displayed will include original drawings on paper using ink and watercolour, and acrylic paintings. I am interested in investigating systems of chance and order. I use serial compositions of repeated marks, and geometries within a grid to create a sense of repetition within variation. This rhythm creates a notation or calligraphy that can be read as a gestural visual script registering duration, movement, interdependence between things; change and mutability; or the shifting patterns of light and shade. Paintings in oil and watercolour, inspired by landscape, buildings and light. Colour, line and texture are important in my work – expressing my feeling for the place and the mood. My style is loose, somewhere between impressionist and expressionist, leaving a little to excite your imagination.

I produce sculpture that is tactile and may be representational or abstract when the themes are usually the development of organic forms. Work may be in stone, wood or metal. The combination of silver with slate or wood is a useful medium for expressing my ideas. Occasionally the work may be in resin, sometimes used with silver. Words, perhaps quirky ones, crop up in some work. They may be carved into sculpted forms or stone plaques for specific sites. S

I’m a professional photographer who moved to Cumbria to pursue my passion for landscape photography. The varied terrain and dramatic weather of the Lakes and Eden Valley have inspired a distinctive and atmospheric style of image making. My landscape work has been widely published and exhibited. In 2007 my work ‘Stay on the Path’ was selected for inclusion in an exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London. In 2010 I opened my own gallery and studio in Askham. S

I have lived in the Lake District for 36 years, and this landscape has become my greatest influence. While at Camberwell School of Art, under the tutelage of Michael Rothenstien, I fell in love with printmaking. Very recently I have bought an etching press, I hope to work directly on to the plates out in the landscape and then rush home to see how they print. Printmaking allows artists to sell their work at a price which is affordable. S

I like to experiment with different media, but particularly enjoy painting with oils, because of their extreme versatility as a medium. I especially enjoy trying to capture a sitter’s likeness in portraiture. Colour is extremely important to me, and I am constantly inspired by its seemingly endless potential in my craft of spinning and weaving, and in creating pictures in felt.

I am a contemporary fine artist. My preferred medium is glass because of its versatility, vibrancy of colour and conceptual potential. Using traditional glass working and experimental techniques I want people to see beauty in a material that they generally overlook. My practice continues my work for the Masters degree. The issue explored is the demise of traditional cinemas and movie theatres. Parts of my degree show installation will be assembled for C-Art as a mini-exhibition. S

I am inspired by everything around me. I have a little studio tucked away down a secret by-road under the purple walls of Gowbarrow. Well done if you find the Bothy! I am on a voyage of discovery with my art work which this year is exploring watercolour with added mediums. I hope that my work reflects the amazing light, the shapes and characters of the outstanding area in which I live.

Jane moved from the large garden she had created from scratch a few years ago, where she had “painted” with plants, using their colour, shape and texture. Now she loves the challenge of watercolour, simplicity and freshness. She enjoys pen, ink and simple washes to capture the things she loves most in nature, in the verges, hedgerows, woods and landscapes of Cumbria and Worcestershire. She loves the texture of feathers, lichens, fungi and leaves and mixed media. S

I grew up on the wide, dry, open spaces of the South African veld. Soft, green, undulating Cumbria is now my home. The contrast in space and light between these environments has greatly influenced how I paint. My love of strong colour and story telling also figure largely in my work. I mainly use oils, my subjest matter is eclectic and my style slides across the boundaries of realism, impressionism and the abstract. The challenge stimulates and excites. S

Recent landscape paintings are a response to the nature that’s all around me every day. They are mostly imaginative recreations in the studio of places I am beginning to know in ways that go beyond surface appearances at a moment of time. Though not usually abstract, they are deeper in the sense of my understanding over time of the character of the land-space through weather, light, colours, patterns, seasonal changes, geology, history and natural life cycles. My ceramic sculpture seeks to capture the essence of human and animal behaviour and is a response to my fascination with the power of body language and movement. Each piece of work is a unique composition with striking features, fluid lines and a strong sense of motion. Surface texture plays an important part in my sculpture and I enjoy exploring the huge potential of the clay and the firing process to deliver new finishes. S

My work reflects an intuitive involvement with imagery and ideas that surround folk memory, prehistory and a sense of place. Inspiration comes from the far flung places I have visited on my travels combined with the ancient landscape of the beautiful North Pennine Fells where I live. I work with a wide range of drawing, printmaking and painting materials, often combining them together to create imagery that is both subtle and mysterious. S

My photographs are not what you might call traditional! I’m drawn to colour and texture – little things catching my eye which would usually go unnoticed. I’m often to be found in boat yards – peering under the hulls of battered and sea-worn vessels, looking for those brilliant patches of colour – blemishes which the owners are desperate to cover over with a new coat of paint but which are to me a source of inspiration – finding beauty in decay. The work I make is based on the relationships we have with the natural world. Manipulation of materials is essential to my way of working, whether it be stone, wood or earth. Abstract forms with a variety of finishes allow me to make the most of my materials. The physicality and ability to touch the work are all important.

We transform reclaimed furniture into colourful, practical and unique works of art. With an interest in all things vintage, we enjoy finding and restoring neglected pieces. Drawing on our textile design experience we have developed our own fabric decoupage technique. We handcut new and vintage cottons and silks and combine colour and motif, texture and tone to create up-cycled furniture with a modern twist.

Ceri Allen is a Cumbrian Painter and Printmaker. She is primarily interested in portraying the figure in a mainly urban environment using traditional picture making techniques. Her work has almost entirely been in the form of direct oil painting on canvas, working from preparatory sketches, photographs and memories. For the last two years she has been exploring the possibilities of print in the form of etching and aquatint. S

Much of my work is symbolic of our relationship with the natural world, made visible through plants and bird imagery. Of landscape, inspiration comes from my homeland, the West Coast of Scotland, particularly the Isle of Iona. I use watercolour for its fragility and directness, tempera for its connection with the earth and oil for its physicality and depth of colour. I have exhibited throughout the UK, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and The RCA, London. S

Visitors to my studio will see contemporary paintings and drawings in a variety of media. I find inspiration from personal experience, as well as literature, poetry and the work of other artists. I have always been fascinated with ways of depicting human and animal form. Recent work reflects an interest in a woman’s perceived place in society and her own sense of identity, as well as an exploration of motherhood and the family. S

My recent mixed media sculptures have a Northern theme depicting creatures of forest and tundra, referencing prehistoric art. Wolves, bison and reindeer roam the studio, alongside paintings of their habitat. I see the animals as Guardian Spirits, symbols of wilderness, and its loss... meditations on both the resilience and fragility of life. I have exhibited nationally and participated in several international shows. I have twice been shortlisted for Wildlife Artist of the Year Award. S

I have been making work to my own design for over 25 years. Always searching for new mediums, I discovered dichroic glass, which fed a life-long passion for colour. I find working with the various coatings endlessly fascinating and the glass lends itself to mosaic and collage, two main influences on my working process. I make jewellery, clocks and tiles; also framed artwork – some abstract and some drawing on the landscape of the Lake District. S

My work is a mixture of sculpture, drawing and painting. I draw inspiration from nature in all of its forms. I enjoy creating tactile pieces of work which are aesthetically pleasing and have an element of fun. The type of materials I use very much depends on the subject matter. My passions are colour and experimenting with media: the bright, bold colours of gouache and collage, the richness of pastels, and the subtle tones of watercolour. Subject matter is influenced by my environs. The Sussex coast inspired the use of collage capturing the bright colour and bustle of the seaside. Cumbria inspired me to paint atmospheric watercolours of the Eden Valley and urban scenes of Carlisle. I use pastels for the riot of colour and contrasts in Cumbrian gardens. S

My reaction to the British landscape is rooted in my family’s background in farming. I am interested in the impact we make on the countryside and although my works have an aesthetic quality, I subvert the finished paintings by burying published text pieces within them which comment on the difficulties farmers face and the erosion of the landscape. In 2011 my work with British Forces in Afghanistan as an official war artist was described in international press as ‘groundbreaking’. S

My favourite medium is pastel, which I use to produce tree-centred landscapes. I am fascinated by trees. For my narrative works I prefer to use oils. I paint for the sheer joy of painting. Art for me is the attempt to capture the sense of a place or a moment in time and experiencing the sense of flow that comes with creativity, and using the skills I have acquired over the years.

Over the years I have developed a fascination for the often ordinary everyday subject matter represented in still life. I enjoy the challenge of capturing the calm stillness within the composition, and aim to convey this to the viewer. Whilst watercolour may not seem the obvious choice of medium to be using in such a controlled fashion I love the vibrant translucent colours and the depth of tone that can be achieved by the over-layering of watercolours. My interest in the coastal regions around the Solway Firth, are the inspiration for my oil paintings and aquatints. The English and Scottish sides in different seasons are a constant challenge, as I try to capture the changing light. The ever changing weather in Cumbria is particularly suited to watercolour painting, and the changing cloudscape ensures that views even from the same spot are never the same.
