Totally Locally in Appleby is
Following on from the success of the first Fiver Fest in Appleby last year, as part of their Totally Locally campaign, in May they held a second event. Even though the town wasn’t blessed with glorious sunshine, there was still a buzz about the town as shoppers came in to but the special offers available. The idea of Totally Locally is to help remind people about the range of products available on their doorstep, in an effort to encourage people to look in town before logging on or heading to the superstores. It wasn’t only shops that were involved, Appleby Golf Club had a Fiver Fest on, as did The Midland Hotel on their tapas menu – which is absolutely scrumptious (I had to do some sampling, purely for research purposes). What is the benefit to traders? Well, after popping in to see some CumbrianLocal
of them on the Saturday launch, a few said that the event last year brought new customers. That was the case for Low Howgill Traditional Meats, who said customers had been enticed to try their products that were on offer for £5, and have since become regular customers. Others discovered, or rediscovered in some cases, that an article they had searched Penrith, Carlisle and Kendal for was found in Appleby. If you’ve never been to the Aladdin’s cave that is Pigney’s you are missing out on a den of household and ironmongery delights, a place where imperial fixings can still be found, alongside everything you need to keep your garden blossoming. Customers said that the event added some oomph to the town, and it was nice that so many businesses were taking part. A visitor from Holland, who was staying locally in a self catering lodge, said that they had filled their

bags with lots of the food treats that were on offer, and the gifts from Branthwaites and Blue Poppy to take home for family. This year the Totally Locally team were joined by Dave ‘Doubledecks’ Ellwood from Eden FM Radio. He brought the brightly branded Landrover to town, and then went to record the thoughts of traders and visitors alike. You’ll soon be able to hear the clips on Eden FM. A highlight for the Scouts, who were helping hand out flyers on the day, was being asked to record a jingle for Eden FM. Do listen it out for it on 107.5fm, online at edenfm. co.uk or via the TuneIn app. It is so important to use our local shops, and equally important that they listen to customer feedback, and adapt to changing customer needs. Welcome to the May edition of your Cumbrian Local Welcome to your May edition of Cumbrian Local! Since my closing line, ‘I’ll catch up with all of you again after May 7th’ so much has happened. Where should I start? Well, I’ll begin with the distribution of last month’s magazine. I had the opportunity, with some staff shortages, to get out and do some deliveries. It’s something I have always done, which gives me the opportunity to meet the readers. I don’t think many editors get to meet the people in their gardens, on their doorsteps and have the opportunity to hand over the Cumbrian Local in person. It did remind me of the times when I was out doing the rounds canvassing for votes during election time. I did get to meet many people when I was out in Culgaith, Milburn, Blencarn, Temple Sowerby, Newbiggin and Kirkby Thore. I did meet a lot of lovely people and what was pleasing was nobody declined taking the magazine as I handed it over the gate. With aspirations to extend the distribution of Cumbrian Local, I am looking for more people to help. This might be just delivering 50 magazines in your village or up to 500 magazines in an area where you live. More details about this on page 24. In between delivering magazines, it has been rather manic. 7th May went on to be a 41 hour day with a quick one hour nap at 07.00 on 8th May. have noticed that Eden FM has linked with an entertainment agency, so most months we will be offering competitions. We have two this month on page 25 and we have a full update on future plans for Eden FM’s expansion into Appleby and Carlisle on pages 14-15. Also launching is the Eden FM weekly draw, which will be every week if enough people sign up. It’s £1.00 per week. That will guarantee one winner of £50 per week, one winner of £500 per month, with a main seasonal draw of up to £5000. Details on page 24. Some of my highlights apart from those already mentioned, included an interview with Cheryl Baker, one of the original members of Bucksfizz, who is currently on tour with the group Formerly known as Bucksfizz. This interview will be available to listen to again via the Eden FM website. More recently, Adam Colin, former Carlisle United keeper, now with Rotherham United, came into studio one at Eden FM to give us an insight into his football season and the plans for the Nunwick 8s Tournament on 7th June. Possibly the busiest week I have had this year, falling in the week I have to get the Cumbrian Local put together, but one worth staying awake for. It peaked on Saturday morning 9th May, when I attended a speech day awards event in Carlisle Cathedral. The guest speaker, one of the most popular speakers in the country, was Lord Digby Jones, or Baron Jones of Birmingham, the former director-general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) (2000–06) and Minister of State for Trade and Investment (2007–08), is an
outspoken champion of enterprise. Corporate Adviser to JCB, Adviser to BP plc and Senior Adviser to Harvey Nash plc, he is a Corporate Ambassador to Aon Risk Solutions, a Corporate Ambassador to Jaguar Cars, a member of the Advisory Board of Monitise plc, among a long list of advisory and Chair positions, he is also non-executive director of Leicester Tigers plc. In an explosion of enthusiasm as he has reinforced on many occasions, “I don’t do party politics” and “business is my constituency”, he doesn’t hold a party card. He captured his audience in every word, praising UK industries, manufacturing and delivered so many positives, it was like a motivational speech for the pupils. They discovered it’s not just about money. Lots of people have money, but it is how it’s used. The most important currency will always be knowledge and the United Kingdom is one of the centres of knowledge for the world. In a week that had seen quite a twist in elections and with many awards to hand out to the pupils, he also did a great story on leadership. I will endeavour to write up more about the event, but I’ll leave you with a line very similar to that delivered by Lord Digby Jones. Great leaders are only great leaders because of those around them. For every winner, they are only a winner because others have taken part. I’ll look forward to sharing more stories next month in your local magazine. At last, after one of the most closely run election campaigns, we have our results and in the end it didn’t seem so close at all. The opinion polls for the last six months have reported a dead heat ending up with the two main parties on 34% in the averaged out ‘Poll of Polls’. Any leads only ever approached two or three points which were within the margin of error, in effect a statistical tie. What we ended up with was the Conservative share rising to 36.9% while Labour slumped to 30.4%, enough to not only return the Conservatives as the largest party but also with a majority. Labour did increase their vote share on the 2010 vote but it was nowhere near enough. From the chart you can also see the unmitigated disaster for the Liberal Democrats at the national level and what looks like a swing to UKIP. I rather think that most Lib Dem voters instead switched to Green or Labour with a good number of Labour voters then
switching to Nigel Farage’s Party. This then is where Labour lost the election, it wasn’t the disaffected Lib Dem vote that they failed to capitalise on, it was the loss of the traditional working class voters who look like they rebelled against a perceived Westminster elite to cast their ballot for UKIP. In local politics, the Conservative Party also gained a majority, with Eden District Council changing from ‘No Overall Control’ to ‘Con Gain’. At national level you can see the Conservative vote holding and I think the reason for this explains the Conservative majority at Eden as well. The Conservatives did the grassroots work. This is not only about getting the vote out and ensuring supporters cast their ballots on Election Day but it is also about putting up as many candidates as possible. The Tory strategy was to attempt to put names for forward for every seat and their principle opponents locally the Lib Dems just did not do that. The result

was 12 Conservatives returned uncontested putting them three fifths of the way towards the goal of taking control of the council before a vote had even been cast! Whether you think that is right or acceptable, decisions are made by those who turn up. One solution might well be to look at the numbers of Councillors we send to EDC. Another would be to encourage more participation in politics, the Tories seem to need no help here but I believe steps should be taken to engage the next generation of community representatives. All major parties need to start looking at this and engage with schools and colleges to help instil a sense of belonging in, and ownership of, the process of politics in our young people. This leads me to the Parish elections and I shall focus on the voting for Penrith’s new Town Council, or lack thereof. In what should be the entry level for political participation only 15 people came forward for a town of 15,000. Only one seat was contested meaning there were fewer than a thousand votes cast in the entire election. Five people will need to be co-opted to fill the rest of the posts. These Councillors will not be recompensed with an L: VotesoShare allowance the argument was that the workload R: Change from2010should be shared between a greater number of members, I think again however that a reduction in numbers should be considered.

The challenge for the new Council, will be to quickly gain the support and trust of the people and prove it is worthy of participation. I can’t stress enough the danger of voting for the existence of a body, approving of its formation and then stepping back and leaving others to take it forward. We all have a responsibility to continue our support to ensure success! Further to this, if you think you have something to offer, I really do suggest you get in touch with the Town Clerk Viv Tunnadine at the Town Hall and ask about the process of submitting your name to be considered for co-option. Returning to the General Election to finish, congratulations must go to Rory Stewart for his resounding victory and the increase of his majority to 19,894. Stewart’s opponents should also be congratulated and indeed thanked for their campaigns, for democracy only exists in the presence of opponents. The 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe coincided with the count, we should be grateful for the continued opportunity to say yes or no.

Eurovision 2015 - here we come! By Pamela Waggott It’s the 60th year of Eurovision. The final will take place on 23rd May in Vienna with Electro Velvet singing for the UK with their song ‘Still in Love with you’. In last month’s Cumbrian Local magazine a little quiz was set for you to test your Euro-knowledge. There were 15 past Eurovision classics hidden in the last paragraphs…did you spot them all? Here are the answers. No prizes, just the rosy glow of knowing that you are a true Euro-fan. So if you are looking high, high, high for a great winner and don’t want to feel like a puppet on a string, Eden fm will be able to help you in making your mind up. Fleeced by the Banks By Tony Butterworth, Butterworths Solicitors
The evidence continues to mount that Eden’s farming community has been systematically targeted by several of the country’s leading banks over the last few years. The story started with the uncovering of the mis-sale of Interest Rate Swaps – complicated financial derivatives products – linked to commercial loans. After years of complaints the banks finally gave in to pressure from the then Financial Services Authority to voluntarily review the sale of these products. Many Cumbrian farmers found that they had unwittingly entered into these transactions which indeed cost them dear. Fortunately many have now been compensated under the FSA’s review procedure. However the level of compensation and the issue of consequential losses has remained throughout totally unsatisfactory for the majority of farmers. In deed the whole review procedure is now the subject of a judicial review application currently proceeding through the High Court, calling into question the processes employed by the banks and the independence of the bank appointed independent reviewer. At least with Interest Rate Swaps there has been some redress. The same cannot be said about the products known as Tailored Business Loans sold by the Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank. These products were not part of the review process as they were not deemed to be regulated products and therefore initially avoided the scrutiny of the review process. We now know that these fixed interest rate loans contain what have loosely been termed “hidden swaps” within them resulting in unusually high exit penalties for breakage of the loans. In addition the Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank seem to have taken every opportunity to increase interest rates on unsuspecting farmers compounding the problem. These actions, made even worse by constant expensive requests for revaluation of farm businesses and assets have led to many tales of woe for Cumbria’s farmers.
One has to ask why farming? Obvious factors include farmers often being asset rich but income poor; farmers are very resistant to change – often sticking with the same bank their father and grandfather had used, and placing an unstinting loyalty and trust in the local bank manager. Link this to rising land values and declining income and the banking industry must have seen the farming industry as easy meat. The tales of financial hardship that we come across are indeed truly shocking and indeed in any other walk of life other than banking one would expect criminal sanctions. Fortunately we are now successfully challenging the imposition of high breakage charges and illegitimate increases in interest rate margins but it is also very clear that many Cumbrian farmers continue to suffer in silence. Farmers are proud people not known for airing their personal circumstances in public, however the message needs to go out that unless farmers do something about it themselves then the banks are not going to volunteer. Unfortunately in recent years many farms have been sold to meet crippling debts which in most cases should not have been necessary. The banks are now on a PR exercise to mend their damaged reputation however the implications of their previous actions will be around for many years to come. Next month, your community radio celebrates its first year of transmitting live on its 107.5 frequency. As we know, not everyone in the Eden Valley will read this article. We also know not everyone will be listening to a radio. Unless you can ask all 52,600 people in the Eden Valley what they read, if they listen to Eden FM, or even if they listen to the radio, no-one will ever know. Of course this isn’t just a rule or statement to Cumbrian Local and Eden FM 107.5, but it is the same for every radio station broadcasting in Cumbria either through a transmitter or via the internet. With regards to local newspapers, as reported on many occasions, despite internet readers like the national papers, their sales have been in decline for 20 years. Social media, instant news rather than weekly news and the access to what is happening when and what has happened today, even last night is catered for through various websites. Eden FM can be listened to online, via your mobile phone as well as the traditional way via tuning the dial on your radio, if you have one to the 107.5 frequency, but not everyone in the Eden Valley will receive the signal to their radio. This is down to the strength, that is the power of the transmission. The location of where the transmission is and what is between your radio and its transmission mast. Here in the Eden Valley and of course we have mountains and fells, woodlands and buildings and the signal strength, believe it or not is affected seasonally. As a self-funded community radio station, we have a number of restrictions, one of these is in that we will never have the range that a commercial radio station has or the BBC. Eden FM is in the third tier of radio and whilst we can sell advertising, even the amount we generate from it is restricted and one of the terms of our community licence is that we have to be a not for profit limited company, but like a commercial station and the BBC, we still have various licences and are protected by certain laws and acts.

All the presenters at Eden FM are volunteers, but as a business operational every day of the year, we do have some paid part-time staff for completing essential tasks, that without these being completed, Eden FM would not be there when you do switch on. As we enter our second year of being the only community radio in Cumbria, we are now implementing a number of developments, to raise funds, get a higher transmission site and recruit more help from the community. From the end of May, we are re-launching our Eden FM Business 500 draw. We are also intending to launch our Eden FM 600 club, which is a bit different from a lottery, with a maximum number of 600 numbers for the first 18 months, an opportunity for one winner every week to win £50, a bonus draw every month for £500 for subscribers and an annual main draw of £5000 for all those signed up for the minimum term of one year. These are just two ways of generating much needed continual revenue, which will not just raise money for Eden FM, but also for projects across the Eden Valley. Scafell Pike Peaks & Pathways by Nick Wells
Scafell Pike stands on the western side of the Lake District and is the highest Mountain in England. The summit at 3209ft was donated to the National Trust in 1919 by Lord Leconfield, this was in memory of the men of the Lake District who fell for King & Country in the Great War. Parking up in a small layby at the head of Wastwater, we took the path towards Scafell. Crossing the footbridge of Lingmell Gill, to our left was Great Gable with the impressive Napes Needles introducing a great mountain, to our right was Rakehead Crag then Lord’s Rake leading to Scafell. I should point out that it is sometimes confused with the neighbouring Scafell Pike,which is only twenty feet less in altitude and connected by the col* of Mickledore. The name ‘Pikes of Sca Fell’ were originally applied collectively to the peaks, known now as Scafell Pike, Ill Crag and Broad Crag, which were considered subsidiary tops of Scafell. We followed the Gill for about an hour on a well maintained step like path. It had been raining the night before, so the Gill was a torrent of the purest water I had ever seen.
full view as we made our way back down toward the start of our walk, a coincidence I thought, you have England’s tallest mountain next to England’s deepest lake. This is one of many routes to Scafell Pike, and the shortest. It took us four hours to walk about six miles, and I would grade it easy. Scafell Pike can also be walked from Seathwaite Farm, situated at the head of Borradale, this route is about eleven miles long and takes you past Stockley Bridge, Sprinkling Tarn, Esk Hause, Great End and on to Scafell Pike. The ascent from Great Langdale is also about eleven miles, starting from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel head towards Rosset Pass and Angle Tarn and up to Esk Hause.The route then coincides with that from Seathwaite Farm. *The lowest point of a ridge connecting two mountain peaks, often constituting a pass.
The path at this point could either take us left to Lingmell fell, or as we took, right onto Scafell Pike itself. The higher we walked, shattered rock debris made the path hard to follow, so we used the Cairns for guidance taking us through the highest altitude example of a summit boulder field in England. We were near the summit now, and were walking in thick cloud hoping it would clear for the views to come. Standing on the highest point in England, the clouds briefly let us see in all directions, but soon closed in again. On a clear day, it is said that one can see Snowdonia. Sixty years ago, at Whitsuntide, a remarkable book was published, the first of a series, that has gone on to become the classic guide to the Lakeland fells. The book was The Eastern Fells by Alfred Wainwright. It was the first in a series of seven guides, each one giving details of the routes of ascent, the view from the summit and the ridge routes from that fell to the next. Wainwright described the book in his Introduction: ‘This book is one man’s way of expressing his devotion to Lakeland’s friendly hills. … It is, in very truth, a loveletter.’

The story of how the book became to be published on or about 23rd May 1955 is fascinating as Wainwright decided that he would self-publish and enlisted the help of Henry Marshall, the librarian at Kendal, who was named as the publisher. Wainwright did not have the money to pay for the books to be printed but Sandy Hewitson, the printer, told him he could pay when he sold the books. Sales were slow at first but the message gradually spread amongst the walking fraternity and very soon the appearance of the next book in the series was eagerly awaited.

Wainwright first raised the question of revisions to the books in the third book, The Central Fells, but admitted that, because of his age, he would be unable to revise the books. He predicted that the books would gradually be withdrawn from publication after a few years. How wrong he was. Late in his life he had discussions with Chris Jesty about revisions to the books but stated that he did not want the books revised in his lifetime. It was not until 2005 that the Second Edition of The Eastern Fells was published, followed by the others in the series.

Now the publisher, Frances Lincoln, has commissioned a further revision by Clive Hutchby, known as the Walkers Edition. The Eastern Fells has just been published, the first full revision in ten years and sixty years after the original guidebook. Also in this sixtieth year, a new exhibition is to be staged at Keswick Museum, opening on 23rd May and running until 8th November. Entitled, A love letter to the Lakeland Fells, it will feature original artefacts and work and, using state of the art technology, include an interactive Wainwright map and a tour of all 214 fells in ten minutes! It should be a treat for Wainwright enthusiasts and will introduce the genius of Wainwright to a new audience of Lake District lovers. Spring has finally arrived at Thacka Beck Nature Reserve with Swallows, House and Sand Martins, Willow Warblers, Blackcaps, Sedge and Garden Warblers all back in residence. The British Trust for Ornithology noted a number of migrants were delayed due to northerly winds during April. A new bird was added to the list of Thacka bird species at the end of April, when a female Marsh Harrier flew south-west over the reserve. This is a migrating bird of prey which can be easily seen at Leighton Moss RSPB reserve in North Lancashire where some individuals now over-winter. 126 bird species have now been recorded at Thacka - not bad for an inland urban environment! Another regular Thacka birder Roy, had the second ever sighting of Red Kite over the reserve in early May, as a bird made it’s way South over the West Coast railway line. Although this huge raptor’s origins were unknown, re-introduced Red Kites from Grizedale in South Cumbria are being seen more frequently in North Cumbria, and can be told by coloured/engraved wing tags unique to the Grizedale scheme.

PENRITH BRANCH Your local branch of the Royal Air Forces Association has been busy over the past few weeks, fundraising and promoting the Penrith Branch within our local communities. Gordon Sandilands, Vice Chairman was interviewed on our local radio station, Eden FM, by Lee Quinn, where our planned participation in future local events was discussed along with the history and purpose of our Association. We are looking to make this a regular event to enable us to raise the profile of the RAFA and take us back to the levels of support we experienced in 2008. © Mark Fuller Carlisle United can look forward to another year in the Football League following their season long flirtation with relegation which saw their summer hopes of a push for promotion quickly turn into a battle for points as the campaign progressed. Manager Keith Curle wielded a May Day Bank Holiday axe as the remoulding of his squad started in earnest, with seven out of contract players – David Amoo, Stephen Elliott, Josh Gillies, Sean O’Hanlon, Matt Robson and David Symington, along with long-serving player coach Paul Thirlwell – shown the door. Currently contracted squad members Troy ArchibaldHenville, Mark Beck, Gary Dicker, Anthony Griffith, Danny Kearns, Courtney Meppen-Walter, Billy Paynter and Antony Sweeney have all been advised they can move on if they can find a club, so things could look very different in the dressing room for the Blues come August. A fight against relegation isn’t what any of us want to see and we’re determined to turn things round and give our fantastic supporters what they want next season. “We know things have to improve because the levels of consistency, in results and performances, just haven’t been there. Austinwren Cup Final by Josh Briggs
The annual Austinwren Cup takes place between teams in the 4th division. The league is split up into 2 groups of 5 and 4, 4 teams come together to make 2 semi-finals, and then with it, a final. This year, the two promoted teams played against each at Keswick’s Fitz Park; Carleton Banks versus unbeaten champions, Pirelli. The opening 15 was mostly made up of tackles and battles but it was Carleton Banks who took the lead through playmaker Matty Treloar. Going behind seemed to have rattled Pirelli who couldn’t cope with Carleton’s counter-attack and pace. Ryan Smith doubled the Soccer Moos’ lead 5 minutes later after great play down the left between Jack Saxby, Josh Briggs and brother, Jake Briggs. Carleton continued and went in at half-time 3-0 up as Jake Briggs finished off another flowing counter-attack after great hold-up play by lone-striker Smith. Pirelli changed formation and duly came racing out of the blocks. They brought back a goal on 47 minutes through a clean 30 yard strike but Carleton persisted with their dominance and found themselves 5-1 ahead after goals from Rob Anderson and Jake Briggs’ second of the night. Pirelli scored two from set-pieces late on but it was Carleton who prevented Pirelli from completing the league and cup double and in turn, Banks lifted their 2nd Cup trophy of the season following their Junior Cup Final victory last month.

Monthly Round-Up by Josh Briggs The beginning of May sees the end of the season come to a close for the Westmorland Divisions and its cup finals. Promotions are sealed, relegation battles are fought and champions are rewarded with luscious silverware. The 4th division gave us a fascinating finale. With 3 weeks to go, and Pirelli already crowned Champions, Border City, Ullswater United, Carelton Banks and Eamont Rovers were playing for the one remaining promotion spot. Despite Eamont Rovers’ successful debut season and Ullswater’s much improved squad, promotion would be settled in the final game of the season between Carleton Banks vs Border City. Eden FM Sport featured the game live on air and were treated to a professional display from the young Carleton outfit who were able to hold onto a first-half 3-1 lead to see them promoted, alongside Pirelli. In fact, it was to be the two promoted teams who were to go head-to-head in the Austinwren Cup Final to decide who would win the inter-division cup. Carleton prevented Pirelli from completing the double with a 5-3 win, capping off a successful season for The Soccer Moos with 2 trophies and a promotion. In the 3rd division, Greystoke blew their chance of promotion after a heavy 8-1 home loss to Eden Thistle in their last game of the season. With games in hand, Kendal United Reserves and Dent took full advantage and both leapfrogged Greystoke into 1st and 2nd, respectively. The championship title went down to the last game of the season where Kendal Utd Rsvs travelled Dent and a 1-0 win for the away side saw them crowned champions, with both sides being promoted. Colin Watson Reserves were relegated. A very strong Unison Athletic took 2nd Division league title by 2 points ahead of fellow-promoted outfit Ibis. Athletic could have completed the 2nd division league and cup double but were beaten in the Mason & Freeman Cup Final 2-1 by Burneside, who finished 4th in the league, one place behind Coniston. The 2nd division proved to be a struggle for Penrith & Eden based teams as Wetheriggs United Reserves and Langwathby United shared the relegation spots, with Shap finishing two places outside the relegation zone in 8th place. Appleby were crowned worthy winners of the 2014/15 Westmorland 1st Division. The season before Appleby had finished 7th, and to climb 7

places in the space of one season highlights what a wonderful achievement it has been; something Liverpool failed to do so last season in the Premiership, yet were applauded throughout the footballing world. Keswick and Kirkoswald were Appleby’s closest competitors for the title but a strong end to the season with wins on the bounce against Kirkoswald, Sedbergh, Windermere and Kendal United always kept Appleby ahead of the pack in comfortable distance, despite Keswick beating Appleby 3-1 on the final game of the season. Wetheriggs finished a respected 4th and Penrith Reserves, winners of last year’s title, dropped down to 9th, 2 places out of the relgation zone – though a solid 12 points adrift. Carvetti United and Ambleside Reserves were relegated.

Andrew Murray Jones making his way through two Newcastle Benfield defenders. Another Northern League Division 1 season draws to an end with the Bonny Blues finishing the season in a very respectable 14th position. A remarkable achievement for Penrith AFC given their resources and location to not only secure our league status for another year but to compete with some very good teams who are in a different league financially. We started the season slowly and were unlucky to be knocked out of both the F.A. Vase and F.A. Cup at the first attempt, losing both 2.1.We got our first victory against Billingham and you could see the squad building in confidence. We were soon playing some good quality football and the results showed. We had a fantastic 3.0 home win in December against the CumbrianLocal
now league champions, Marske, who at the time had not lost a single game away from home. We also had impressive victories over Celtic Nation, Durham City, Whitley Bay and Newton Aycliffe which sent us top of the form table. Unfortunately we came unstuck in the mud at Cleator Moor Celtic in the Cumberland cup and lost to a dubious penalty away at Dunston in the quarter final of the league cup. We finished the season strongly with victories over West Auckland, Bedlington Terriers and Bishop Auckland. Matt Henney and the lads have all worked their socks off to give the town a team to be proud of. The players have all pulled together and performed superbly. the plaudits with his outstanding goalscoring record, over 30 goals since November but Grant Davidson and Jordan Little have been rock solid at the back. Ben Jackson and Sam Bell have been improving throughout and Richard Faustino has finished the season strongly, chipping in with some important goals. And as always our veteran Will Paul has given us 100% as he edges closer to 700 appearances. Don’t forget about the music festival down at Frenchfield Park on June 19/20/21.
