THE CAR IN FRON

2 • EdenLocal

It’s a different angle on a family business. The doors opened at the first Jim Walton workshop in 1969. Many of you living in and around Penrith back then, will remember the Southend Road premises next to the Penrith Football Club. As the business grew, it specialised in Toyota. Over 40 years on, its facilities at Gilwilly are easy to find. It’s the garage with the big red and white banner 10 foot flag and the building which confirms it also has 40 years plus experience. You will see of course a line of pretty much every current model of Toyota and a good collection of other makes and models. On a visit to the showroom, you’ll see on the walls not just brochures, but beyond the comfy chairs and coffee machine, it’s excellent coffee by the way, you’ll see a history of achievement in plaques and letters from generations of local people. It is fair to say, this is one of many reasons why Jim Walton thrives still today and tomorrow, next week and will for many years to come. It’s a family business that has been a part of the community for almost 50 years.

Cars do play a big part in our lives, especially in an area where public transport isn’t fantastic. For pleasure and for work, but as an essential need to many, they are a simple but an important part of our mobility. My thanks to Andrew Kidd who has been test driving cars and writing articles for Jim Walton Toyota who has presented a fantastic perspective of Jim Walton and the quality of its new and used Toyota cars. It is in two words about sales and service. It’s also about technology and trust. EdenLocal

On the forecourt this month & every month a new set of wheels awaits you at Jim Walton I have met many members of the family. Alan Walton isn’t just an advertiser, he is a friend, but the welcome you get when you walk in is like everyone is a friend. There is no fast sale, trust is something which grows, just like over time reliability becomes established.

Back in the nineties, the Toyota marketing peaked with a caption, ‘The car in front is a Toyota’. Well here in Penrith and areas around it, ‘the car in front’ has a very good chance of being a Jim Walton. our Eden Local We learn through experience from the time we are born. As I say to my daughters sometimes, you will get things wrong but the important thing is to learn and understand how to put things right and then it’s hoped that they bank that experience and develop those skills that hopefully help them not make the same mistake again, particularly if it was a bad experience. I suppose in all truth as adults, we have a trail of questions that we ask ourselves in our mind and some out loud when we say, ‘why did I do that again?’ We all make mistakes through life, some in work, some at home and in friendships. We have a saying in our house ‘today can only last today’………. Recently I felt the Autumn in my bones, that chill in the air and the heating tripping in one morning. I looked out of the kitchen window and observed the apples on our tree in the back garden. Some are already starting to drop on the heavy dewed lawn beneath it and the leaves are now turning to those colours that make this season so special. We may still have some warm days ahead as we prepare for October. For those who have managed a holiday or a break, I hope it was enjoyable. For those that didn’t, I know many that didn’t, some that did chose to go away and spent a lot of time still on their mobiles or computers working. I always feel how fortunate we are to live in a place that is visited by so many millions of people to see the natural beauty that we wake up to every day. I’m starting to sound like I have had a break or am I just glad to be home? to school, it’s always a challenge, just like after the Christmas/New Year break, getting all the ads and editorial together. So we are a little behind this month, but then I am already half way through the October Eden Local draft and we have fitted in some very recent updates one of these a close encounter with David Holdsworth, Controller of the 39 BBC Regional radio stations, who I met at the Community Media Association conference in Birmingham. As I write this opening to your September edition, I have just finished mowing the lawn front and back, a dry day but damp grass on the north east side of the house that looks out towards Beacon Edge, the Pennines with Cross Fell in the east. Looking out of my office window, at home, here in Penrith, in front of me as I face south west high on Wetheriggs estate, I see the giant peaks of the Lake District National Park. As busy as I am, so many times in the day I look at that view and almost directly west as the shadows take over early evening, the 2847ft high mass of Blencathra cuts deep into the sky. Do you know how old it is? My focus now over the coming months is of course working on the creation of the ‘Giants of Cumbria’ Top Trumps cards, joined by Keith Wood an experienced walker, photographer and writer. More about Keith and the project on pages 10 to 11. I am so excited about this project. A landscape that started to form over 485.8 million years ago, the history of Cumbria will unfold through its

settlements to towns, city, villages, its influences, famous people, land marks, its sport, its food, its culture, wildlife, its seasonal events and activities. To tell the story of Cumbria this way through 90 cards and to share it with so many people in and out of the county is so exciting. I am able to focus on the Top Trumps project and get back to much of my main work as a business consultant, due to finally, after 7 years of setting up the Eden FM project, with effect from August 2016, Nigel Peacock now oversees much of the everyday running of Eden FM. It meant I had a holiday and I could switch off my phone. Those running small businesses can relate to the sense of relief. Our first update from Nigel is here this month (pages 26 to 27). Whilst I have had some time out with my family, I was able to, before my break, catch up with Julie, our ‘Pink Lady’ handy woman (page 20) who first came into the Eden FM studios at the start of the year with an idea, which now is her very own business. I also had a good chat with Dickie of DC Building and Roofing (pages 22 to 23). Meanwhile, it’s time again to get those apples off the tree, maybe make some cider and blackberry wine next weekend. I’ll be back with some more local stories and updates publishing your next Eden Local in the first week of October. Lee

Mingling with the Community Media Association Part One by Lee Quinn It was an early start, just before 6am on the Saturday morning that we headed down to Birmingham for the annual event that is the Community Media Conference 2016, held at Birmingham City University Faculty of Arts, Design and Media. The theme for this year’s conference was Creativity, Diversity and Wellbeing. Posted on 31st August 2016 by Tamar Milen & filed under Arts on the CMA website was the following statement: Over the last year, discussions at CMA Council meetings have often been about how we could help to change public perception of community media. Are we amateurs, playing at radio, TV and print? No! We are professionals, working in community development. We have found the ‘magic bullet’ for transforming the lives of individuals, and improving things for our town or area – it’s getting people together to create and distribute their own media. We all see the incredible changes that take place, and dedicate our lives to making it happen, often underpaid, under appreciated and over worked. As the Council has worked on a new strategy for the CMA, with the tag line ‘Community Media Changing Lives’, we’ve thought about how to get the message across to stakeholders and the general public. Thinking towards this year’s Conference, we wanted to take time to celebrate what is really amazing about community media, whilst acknowledging the problems, challenging those with influence and improving our skills to help all of our organisations become more sustainable. We need everyone to be part of this conversation – those rooted in community media, and representatives from the BBC, Ofcom, PRSfM/PPL, funders and others. I’m not the only person who has felt underwhelmed by

talks delivered by someone high up in their profession in mainstream media. They may not really understand what we do, and no-one likes being talked down to. Let’s avoid those situations, and instead, invite all kinds of people to discuss things together, and share skills. Our annual conference can be a place where new ideas are generated, new connections made. Moving to a mix of panel discussions and workshops will help this to happen. Our theme of ‘Creativity, Diversity, Well-being’ sums up all that is best about what we do. Creative risks can be taken, with people making content that wouldn’t be found anywhere else. Some of these amazing ideas gradually seep into mainstream media. Diversity here isn’t just tokenistic – some of the most marginalised and misunderstood groups have real ownership and control of media platforms. And the well-being of many people around the UK is being transformed by locally owned, non-profit, grassroots media outlets. My hope is that the Conference itself not just looks at these points but lives them. Let’s have a creative event, where we are buzzing with ideas. Let’s have a good range of people speaking, diverse in every sense. And let’s look after one another on the day. Take time to welcome new people, listen to one another’s points of view, and have a positive shared experience that helps us to thrive over the coming year. The post Creativity, Diversity, Wellbeing – what’s behind our conference theme appeared first on arts. community.media. This post is from the arts.community.media website. Accompanied by Nigel Peacock, from Eden FM, it was the first conference of this type that Eden FM as a community station had attended. The Community Continued on page 12

By Lee Quinn

Here at Eden Local we are delighted to welcome back Keith Wood to our team. Keith worked with us during 2012, providing us with a succession of stunning images for the front covers for our titles; Eden Local and Lakes Local. Even more significantly he provided us with a series of excellent walking routes from his “Boot Up” series of local walking books. Sadly (for us and our readers) we lost Keith’s services at the end of 2012 as he and his family moved from his beloved Lake District to the even grander Scottish Highlands. Now living close to the village of Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness, Keith continues to develop his photographic business running Photo Workshops to locals and visitors alike, providing them with high quality photographic instruction and visiting some of the most stunning locations in the Highlands. Having built up an impressive portfolio of Highland

images (almost matching his successful Lakes Library) he has also launched a range of Photo Greeting Cards and Prints, offering them for sale through his website, selected local outlets and also at local Craft Fairs. One of his images has even featured on the cover of a Scottish

Wildlife calendar. To find out more about Keith’s photography take a look at his website: www. keithwoodphotography.co.uk In addition to his photography Keith has been able to pursue another of his passions: History and Castles. Throughout the summer for two days a week, Keith can be found at the world famous Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness guiding visitors around the monument and sharing his knowledge of the castle’s fascinating history. Luckily for us, despite living over 300 miles away, Keith is rejoining the team to lead on our exciting new Top Trumps project. Over the coming months we will be releasing three packs of Top Trumps playing cards all focussed on Cumbria. The first: “Giants of Cumbria” features Lakes,

With his extensive image library and knowledge of Cumbria, Keith will be providing the images for many of the cards together with the descriptions of each of the subjects. Keith says “I’m delighted to be back part of the team again to work on this exciting project to bring the delights of Cumbria to the Top Trumps world”. Next month we will be revealing the ‘Giants of Cumbria’ and giving you an insight to the other two sets. professional CLEAN?

A complete, affordable interior and/or exterior conservatory cleaning service using specialist access and cleaning equipment that will leave your conservatory looking like new. A CONSERVATORY is an excellent investment, increasing the value far above its cost and when looked after properly, it will last for years. But, if it isn’t cleaned properly, there could be problems – and that’s where ConserVClean* comes in. Michael McFarlane could not find anyone to clean his own conservatory, so he started up ConserVClean which has been growing ever since. Most work has come via customer recommendations. The company is fully insured and uses specialist cleaning and roof access equipment. The system can extend the life of a conservatory and also helps to prevent potential leaks and algae growth. “Conservatories cost on average about the same price as a family car”, says Michael. “Proud car owners wash and wax their vehicles and send hundreds of pounds a year maintaining them. But, you only keep a car two or three years, and you lose money on it.” “A conservatory costs thousands too, but it will last a lot longer than a car, and it’s an excellent investment if it is properly maintained. It’s only common sense to keep it properly cleaned.” “Wet weather and bird muck can contribute to the decay of a conservatory. If conservatories are not maintained, they will become dirty and green algae forms, possibly feeding on the rubber seals”, says Michael. “Algae can grow within key joints which if left untreated may leak and the value of the conservatory may fall unless expensive repairs are performed. This need not happen if the conservatory is regularly cleaned.”

Powerwashers and normal cleaning brushes can damage seals and scratch poylcarbonated roofs, making good homes for dirt. For a fraction of the cost of maintaining a car, ConserVClean will increase the looks, reduce problems and prolong the life of your conservatory. Trying to sell your house? A gleaming conservatory will increase the selling appeal. Let in more light! A brighter interior – even a thin layer of dirt can diminish light penetration. Preventative Maintenance. Cleaned once or twice a year, your conservatory will be kept in good condition and you will get maximum enjoyment from it. WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY “I was delighted with the work carried out - so very pleased to now look out of my upstairs window onto the glistening roof of my conservatory. Thank you.” Mrs Mais, Stainton, Penrith “Very impressed and would certainly recommend the service.” Mr Salter, Carlisle

October By Pam Waggott

You are probably expecting me to tell you all about ‘...ghosties and ghoulies, and long legged beasties and things that go bump in the night...’ but you’d be wrong! Yes, October is the month of Hallowe’en, Trick or Treating, Pumpkins and Ducking for Apples but I decided to focus on another aspect of the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’...the ancient art of conkering!

The conker is the seed of the Horse Chestnut Tree and should not be confused with the edible seeds of the Sweet Chestnut tree. The Horse Chestnut tree was introduced into Britain in the late 16th century from the Balkans but it took over two centuries for the seeds of the tree to be used to play conkers, previously the game had been played using hazel nuts or snail shells (there is no record if the snails were still in residence!). The trees are very distinctive with large pink or white flower spikes known as candles blooming in April to May and are seen all over the country in parks, gardens and in residential areas. It would appear that the tree gets its common name from the leaf-scars on the twigs which look like horseshoes – complete with nail holes. Also, after being soaked in water overnight, boiled and then ground down and added to fodder, horse chestnuts were fed to horses to make their coats shine!

As the year progresses the fruits develop and the hard shiny brown nut is found within a prickly casing which, over the course of September and October, gradually turns brown and cracks open revealing the conker held inside. When fully ripe they fall from the tree though often impatient ‘conkerers’ can be seen throwing sticks high into the Horse Chestnut tree to dislodge them for easy collection. Each of the conker seed pod can hold a number of seeds but to play the game of conkers a symmetrical, firm and unblemished conker is necessary. The conker is not only a play thing but has also been used medicinally to prevent rheumatism and piles by carrying them in a pocket! They have also been used to keep moths away from clothing and it is also often cited that by placing conkers in corners and behind furniture spiders can be discouraged from entering a room. However they are probably best known for the game of conkers – played by children (and adults) over many years. According to the Ashton Conker Club (Est. 1965) which holds the World Conker Championships in Ashton, Northamptonshire the perfect conker should be ‘big, round and shiny’ with a hole carefully bored through the centre with a piece of string

EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

threaded through and knotted securely at one end so it doesn’t pull through completely. There should be sufficient string (or shoe lace) to wrap twice around a clenched hand with about 25cms (10 inches in old money!) left hanging. In playground tournaments players then take turns to hit their opponent’s conker. The toss of a coin decides who goes first and the person who is to have their conker hit first is guided to the height that they hold their conker by the ‘hitter’. The conker must be held perfectly still. The opponent then attempts to hit the holder’s conker – being allowed two extra goes if the holder’s conker is missed. If the strings tangle the first to shout ‘strings’ or ‘snags’ gets an extra shot. The word called may be different depending on where in the UK the game is being played. The holder and hitter take it in turns to hit each others conkers until the winner is declared on the destruction of the others conker. Of course if the conker is knocked from one of the players hand or it is dropped for any reason then the stamping rule is invoked – with the other player shouting ‘stamps’ and stamping on the conker...however if the owner of the dropped conker calls ‘no stamps’ then the stamping rule is disallowed and the conker can be retrieved and the game can begin again! Multiple winning conkers are known as ‘oneers’, ‘two-ers’ and so on depending on how many opponents have been overcome. Playground players also use a wide range of hardening techniques to ensure the best resilience and strength from soaking the conker in vinegar or paraffin, coating them in nail varnish, baking them in the oven or storing them in the dark for 12 months! All of these are illegal under competition rules. The Ashton Conker Club also describes how the game should be played to competition rules – pre-drilled and pre-threaded conkers, no snagging allowed and certainly no ‘stamps’. There are a number of styles and techniques which are employed both in the playground and in the competitive arena with a variety of stances, swings – over arm and underarm, side slashes, backhands and numerous other tactics to ensure that the attacking conker hits the hanging conker at its most vulnerable point. So this October get out and about, find a horse chestnut tree, collect some conkers, take the laces from your shoes and revisit your childhood...you never know there might just be a winning ‘six-er’ out there waiting for you. Happy Conkering! (With thanks to the Ashton Conker Club website for clarity on the technical terminology of the art of conkering)

Your local furniture store has evolved!

W ON

The business evolved from selling antique pine furniture from a small shop at Wetheriggs Pottery. Today it has become what is probably the biggest retailer of oak furniture in the county with 2 shops and over 3000 items of furniture in stock. Many items are available to be taken away the same day or you can have them delivered free of charge within Cumbria. But it’s not just a massive selection of oak furniture that they offer. They also have a huge range of traditional and modern rugs. Unlike many stores they have extra large rugs on display to takeaway the same day or have delivered. With smaller rugs starting at £35 and large rugs 6’7 x 9’10 starting at only £129 they offer amazing value for money. Their choice of beds and mattresses has also evolved over the past 5 years, Cumbria Oak are now able to offer some of the best quality mattresses on the market. Primarily focused on the brands of Rest Assured and Silent Night their huge knowledge base ensures that you get the best nights sleep imaginable. Don’t tolerate that aching back any longer! Get down to Cumbria Oak and they’ll sort you out with the right mattress for you in no time. Graham tells me that many customers have not changed their mattress in a while and are unsure exactly what will be best for them. He tells me that all their mattresses are proven and that all the mattresses they sell have been tried and tested by either a member of staff or a relative. It puts us in a unique position to ensure we are providing a great product that we have tested ourselves. How many furniture stores can say that? Not only will you find a great selection of furniture, rugs, beds, mattresses gifts, and lighting but Cumbria Oak have some fantastic offers available in store now. Many won’t be repeated again so why not pop down to their Plumpton store located at the Pot Place, Plumpton CA11 9PA

17 to 25! That period of our lives in which we feel no one understands us! by Emily Quinn

appeal a lot more. I’ve written for the magazine a few times because of my contribution to Eden FM Radio and my Tanzania travels, but I thought this should become a more permanent, regular thing. Also, this way, people of my age who wish to get a point across can email me and I will share it with everyone (with your permission of course), because the chances are that you’re not the only one experiencing something and it may help to hear from other people too. I will put my email at the bottom if you do wish to give me ideas. These are just my initial thoughts as a 17 year old … in coming months I’ll write about things from other perspectives.

So, my name is Emily Quinn; yes, the daughter of the man who produces the magazine in which this article appears. I am 17; a rather disorganised, sleepy, if not slightly lazy at times teenager. Well that’s what the teachers tell all of us, but that’s not because we necessarily are, it’s because they are constantly pushing us and sometimes it all gets a bit too much for us. The point of this article is to give everyone an insight into what’s going on in a teenagers mind. Because let’s face it, no one really knows! I’m going to write in each issue about things that are going on in my life as well as other peoples. The idea of this is to help not only parents, grandparents and the ‘older generation’ understand their teenagers a bit better, but also for young people my age to read and realise that what’s going on is totally normal, and they’re not the only one going through ‘hell’. I’m going to be totally honest with you all - I’ve never picked up an Eden Local and read it cover to cover! I think that’s mainly because although I like reading, it’s never really appealed to the age group I’m in. I figured that if there was a feature in the magazine about something readers of all ages could relate to it would EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

At 17 things start changing ENORMOUSLY! Around 20-25% of the young people at this age are doing or finishing their first year of A-Levels. That’s the first stress! Anyone who’s been to school will know it can get stressful at times. Anyone who’s done A-Levels will understand what I mean when I say it’s a whole new ballgame. The commitment and level of effort isn’t a step up from GCSEs, it’s more of an Eiffel Tower sized jump. Some people of this age may have completed their first year of full time employment, some could be in starting out, midway through or near completion on a vocational course, or apprenticeship and some might be just stuck not knowing what to do or where they are going to be by the end of next week, let alone by the time they are 18. Stress number two is driving!! Learning to drive is adopting another subject. It’s another thing to study, another thing to learn and another thing to worry about. Unlike A-Levels, for most people, driving is seen as a more exciting task. However, it still requires study and hard work. The process of learning to drive, doing your theory and then doing your driving test could potentially take quite a long time and this is unavoidable because everyone learns at different rates. Learning to drive is something you can’t just rush and it takes patience, money and time. These are three things people my age struggle with; the struggle is inevitable. On top of driving, what I would put as the third stress is having a part time job. Although people with a full time job perhaps look at a part time job as ‘easy’, it just makes us stress more. It’s an extra thing we do. After school or college along with finishing coursework, having dinner, showering and you’re working until 10 o’clock at night, then realise you’ve got to get up in the

EdenLocal • 19

morning for school…it’s exhausting. We know we have to do it though. We don’t complain because we’re lazy (well, often we are lazy, but that’s not why we complain!), we complain because we are tired and our brains are in the process of adapting and working properly. Getting ready for adulthood. This is the hormones! We use hormones as an excuse for almost everything. However, about 50% of the time we’re being serious when we say it is the hormones which give us our occasional short fuse. Sometimes we snap and cry or just get very angry for no reason; I mean literally no reason! It’s one of those situations where you’ve got the angel in one shoulder telling you one thing and the devil on the other shoulder telling you the complete opposite. Your brain just burns out and that’s the fuse blowing up. Another stress to follow my previous comment is siblings!! I have a younger sister in year 9. For people reading this who are around my age I really don’t need to say any more than that! If you’re a parent reading this, I guarantee at some point you have had to either separate your children or scream at that them to be quiet (putting it nicely). The age difference between me and my sister is just under four years which means although sometimes I get extremely frustrated with her and I feel like ‘wringing her neck’ I am a role model and blah blah blah… Parents always say to the older sibling, ‘Everything you do will influence what your brother/sister does, so set a good example’, this is true, however, it does really, REALLY annoy us when

they try to be us! REALLY annoy us!! We totally get they ‘look up to us’ and ‘want to be us’ because we’re doing all these new exciting things…and that’s the reason we get angry and fed up, because they’re not us. I also think that if my sister reads this article she will probably want to ‘wring my neck’, so let’s hope for my sake that she doesn’t read it! The final stress I’m going to bring to your attention is University! Most people I’ve spoken to who are doing A-Levels do want to go on to university, but not everyone…which is okay. It should be totally up to the individual whether or not they go to university. Apprenticeships are stimulating and challenging. You can go far with just A-Levels! You can go far with just GCSEs! I’ve met some very inspirational people (both adults and young adults who’ve made it work), who finished school after GCSEs and are now very successful. They have families, a good job and most importantly, people they can trust around them. These further qualifications are an option not something you have to endure. That needs to be made clear to everyone, because we may need a push, but we’re at an age now where we should able to start to make more life decisions. We need to start at some point! I have very caring parents who don’t really want to let go (no parent does), and I know as a parent all you do is try and do what is best for us, but learning through trial and error is something we have to do. You may already know that what we decide is wrong, but that instinct is the instinct we will adopt after making those mistakes for ourselves. emilyq16@outlook.co.uk

I haven’t got time for photos, I’m busy!

Meet Julie…….. It was at the start of 2016 that Julie popped into the studios at Eden FM. A new idea that was to be her new career. Eden Local and Eden FM have been given the pleasure of promoting Handy Woman Services. There are a lot of pretend builders and handy people out there. We are glad that Julie found us and we discovered Julie. Like a lot of businesses starting out, it requires budget and in many cases with traditional businesses selling advertising, they always appreciate that some businesses need to be seen out of the box. Why? A budget in most cases is about boxes and lineage and what you can afford. Over the past few months, following in her father’s footsteps, sometimes Pete, her dad, has been close behind her on some of the larger jobs, helping out and seeing that experience he has passed on. In Julie’s first advert, we had a simple tag line featuring her favourite colour pink. This pink lady’s first advert started:Need a hand with those odd jobs at home, general repairs and home improvements? Listed in her advertising box were some samples of the jobs Julie would take on:• Hanging pictures • Putting up shelves • Garage, shed, house clearances, assisting with tip runs • Fitting blinds/curtains/rails • Assembling flat pack furniture • Guttering repair/unblock • Fencing & garden repairing • Mowing or pruning Apart from one of these things listed above, I have seen and witnessed Julie taking on all of these tasks, but if you had a bigger box I thought, or even a page, we could add very reliable, unbelievably tidy, working at a pace that at Eden FM we have seen when we moved premises. Then of course there is laying flooring, making shelves, helping clear sacks and sacks of rubbish, stripping walls, preparing walls, lining walls, filling walls, painting rooms and EdenLocal

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

transforming a lot of areas in your home, garden, garage in an unbelievable timescale. Finding a handy person who can do as asked, in the agreed time and budget is a major find. There is a lady out there in pink dungarees who can help, with pink writing on her car and where you see her pink business card popping up in the windows of local businesses and on notices. Importantly, if you have experienced a handy person or builder on a daily rate spending a lot of time on their mobile phone, which believe it or not you could be paying for, you will see that Julie doesn’t waste time when you’re paying her to do a job, like some are lining up work before they’ve finished the job in hand. Just call Julie on 07725 829037. She is a busy lady, but guaranteed to call you back. Julie’s budget by the way was £100 per month to be on Eden FM and in the Eden Local, being a part sponsor of the ‘Your Home show’ giving her the out of the box experience, but also Julie took the ‘Be seen and be heard’ option including a box in Eden Local.

Growing the family business Are they the roofers of the future? Well I spoke to Dickie Curry last month and we thought it would be good to write a few words about him and his business. He has been with the Eden Local over a year and I have seen his team and business expand due to demand. On that occasion when he popped around, he did have a helper in his van. Well as you can see with my recent photo of Richard and his sister Sienna, I had to snap when I was visiting Dickie, he won’t be on a roof just yet, but as Dickie explained he keeps asking his dad when! Every opportunity Richard gets, he wants to get out and about in the van with dad. Maybe one day I’ll be writing about Richard following in dad’s ladder runs! Dickie has been on roofs for over 20 years and he made the decision to set up his own business back in 2011. He is hoping it will be a father and son business one day and this is one of many things that drives him. But like anyone who takes this route, whilst his second home is being on someone’s roof, when his feet are on the ground, it’s all about his family. As explained by Dickie, once you know you have a head for heights, whilst it is common to start out as a roofing labourer and then get training on the job, there is a lot to learn in roofing as there are so many types and a number of professional qualifications are required within certain projects in order to repair, replace, or

EdenLocal

restore certain types of roof. On top of this, there are a lot of health and safety measures that surround any project. The DC Building and Roofing team has a mix of building, roofing and joinery skills. A number of these are covered by professional roofing qualifications, including general slate and tiling qualifications, certified heritage roofing and with so many new types of materials used on roofs, the teams have to be up to speed with traditional roofing materials as well as fibre glass, plastics and green roofs. Having a new roof isn’t as simple as buying something off the shelf. To give readers an idea of timescales in replacing a roof, Dickie emphasised it’s not easy to price until a site visit

The magazine that relies on doors for circulation not sales

has been done so a proper quote can be completed. If accepted, a schedule of work can then be agreed. Dickie went on to explain that although every roof in one way or another is different, a project on an average size 2 to 3 bedroom home can be completed within 2 to 3 days by the DC Building and roofing team. From time of quote, at present this would be 5 to 6 weeks away from the quote being accepted, so there is still time before winter really sets in to have a new roof, although the teams are out all year round as some jobs can’t wait for fair weather. And as Dickie once again insisted in his advertising, the statement remains that DC Building and Roofing will continue to beat any like for like quote by 10%.

Summer Shows & Stereotypes In a rural area like Eden the summer months bring the many varied agricultural shows that offer a fascinating day out – a chance to sample the sights, sounds, and flavours of local life and produce. My wife and I were excited when our daughter gave us complimentary tickets to the Lowther Show where she was working as a groom for one of the horse teams taking part in the equestrian event. We had a wonderful day watching the horse displays and the eventing competition as well as browsing the stalls and presentations that were taking place.

Made to measure to cherish forever Cabinet Makers, Penrith Dining Tables w Picture Frames w Bunting Mantelpieces w Boxes w Drawers …and lots more! www.thebespokehomeco.uk 07786 271147

Being at a show that primarily caters for equestrian and game interests I couldn’t help but notice the unique sense of identity that many show goers shared. I was for example, able to distinguish the equestrian from the game keeper or fishermen simply from the clothes people were wearing. I don’t think my summer shorts and t-shirt quite made the same impression. It got me thinking about how identity can easily become an external thing as superficial as clothing, but of course our identity is much more than skin deep. I am inspired by how Jesus Christ refused to take the cultural values of his day too seriously – he didn’t value a person more because of their occupation or family background. He didn’t avoid people with questionable morals or reputation, in fact he shocked people by refusing to stereotype people. Jesus looked past the external identity and saw who people really were. It also impresses me how secure he appeared to be. He appeared unfazed by public opinion and the criticism and judgement of others. I think that his inner strength and open heart was drawn from his relationship with his Heavenly Father and not from anything external. It is encouraging that my questionable fashion or occupation doesn’t measure my worth to God. Jesus teaches us that we are worth much more to God than that! Jon Cook King’s Church Eden

MUSICALLY SPEAKING . . . by Nigel Peacock

“If music be the food of love , play on” – Twelfth Night Shakespeare didn’t have the benefit of a radio, but knew the power that music has over us; his words spoken by Duke Orsino are the first line from Act One, Scene One of Twelfth Night, written in 1602.

NO NEWS, IS BAD NEWS As a listener to radio, perhaps the most important aspect, to me at least, is hearing the news. Eden FM have provided a local news service for some time now. Watch this space, (or should that be listen?), for changes and improvements over the coming few weeks. Our local news is designed to bring you the headlines from Penrith, the surrounding villages and across the Eden Valley. We want to do more of that in the future. Local headlines are only one part of a news service. At the end of August, Eden FM introduced a brand new national news bulletin, which will run every hour of the day. The new one minute bulletins come from a purpose built newsroom under the brand Radio Newshub and will cover the top national and international stories from across the globe. The sound of your world in 60 seconds. Local news and weather will follow the national bulletin between 7am and 5pm every weekday.

AND NOW, YOUR LATEST UPDATE Also new to Eden FM this month, are regular 60 second updates for business, sport and showbiz. Listen at 30 minutes past each hour, most hours of the day across the week and you will hear the latest updates. We all love our national sport and showbiz gossip, so Eden FM decide to bring those to you every day, Monday to Friday. Add to that the latest business news and you will be up to date with the world around us. New in September is ‘Eden Jobs’. This is perfect for your business to advertise new staff vacancies. Your advert can be on air within a day, for a single payment of £50, will run for a week and will also feature on both our Facebook page and on Twitter. For an additional £49, add a print advert here in Eden Local

AND FINALLY . . . Have you ever shouted at the radio and said you could do better? Then Eden FM challenges you to step up to the microphone and prove it. As part of our expansion plans for local news, we have a number of spaces for volunteers to join us, to help

compile and read the news. Eden FM will provide you with basic training in sourcing and writing a story, compiling a bulletin and reading it on the radio. If you don’t fancy reading, then we can use your expertise in the newsroom for preparation. If you have a morning, an afternoon, or a day a week, then come and join the team and help Eden FM provide listeners with the best in local news. Give me a call on 01768 899 101 or email admin@ edenfm.co.uk and we can have an informal chat to see how you would like to help the team. And just think, the next news you hear on Eden FM, could be written by you! And that can only be good news.

You don’t need to splash in the puddles on your pathway, patio or driveway.

CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF THE BUZZCOCKS Keep the evening of Friday 7th October free as you could win two tickets to see the Buzzcocks with Eden FM 107.5 BUZZCOCKS, one of the most important and influential bands ever, celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. Pete Shelley (vocals/guitars), Steve Diggle (vocals/guitars), Chris Remington (bass) and Danny Farrant (drums) will play the first dates of this momentous tour in Australia & New Zealand in March and will continue to mark this astonishing anniversary year by touring the UK, Europe and the Americas. Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto formed Buzzcocks in Bolton in February 1976. The band, completed by the addition of Steve Diggle and John Maher, opened for the Sex Pistols in Manchester on July 20th, a follow up to the now (in)famous Lesser Free Trade Hall gig which Devoto and Shelley had organised the month before. Gigs in Manchester and London followed, and by the end of 1976, Buzzcocks became one of the first groups to form their own independent record label New Hormones - on which they released the now-legendary and seminal ‘Spiral Scratch’ EP. The following year saw the departure of Devoto and the recruitment of bassist Steve Garvey. In August 1977, the band signed a recording contract with United Artists Records and released the landmark ‘Orgasm Addict’ single. This was swiftly followed by ‘What Do I Get?’, the band’s first entry into the UK top 40 singles chart and the first of a string of chart singles. Penrith AFC By Karl Collinson

from Richard Faustino. With 10 minutes to go the home side pulled one back and got the equaliser in the 88th minute. The replay was a game of 2 half's as Martyn Coleman put us ahead early on but later in the 1st half saw his penalty saved. Dunston came out in the 2nd period spurred on by our missed chances and equalised soon after. The game was heading into extra time until Dunston striker tried his luck from 30 yards, his shot took a massive deflection and squeezed into Jonny Jamieson's bottom corner. That was our dreams over for another year. It didn't get any easier for us as we welcomed the current league champions and the favourite's to Frenchfield Park, Shildon and South Shields. Both teams showed their quality and left with the 3 points. The club decided to part company with manager, Matt Henney, after 3 1/2 years. We'd like to thank Matt for all his time and commitment to Penrith AFC in that time and wish him well for the future. Penrith AFC began the 2016/17 on a positive note, beating Sunderland RCA 1.0 in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup in the first game of the season. Jake Smith's 2nd half goal proved decisive as we booked an away tie at fellow Northern League Division 1 opponents, Dunston UTS. The Bonny Blues opened their league campaign with a deserved draw at Newcastle Benfield with Kevin Connelly grabbing the equaliser but the lads came away disappointed that they didn't grab the 3 points as was their late domination. We welcomed a very strong Bishop Auckland team to Frenchfield Park on what proved an afternoon of what could have been. Martyn Coleman, Kevin Connelly and Jake Smith missing good chances and the visiting keeper getting the Man of the Match award saw the away team record a 2.0 victory. It was back to the FA Cup where we travelled to Gateshead to play Dunston. The lads got off to a poor start but showed great character to lead 3.1 courtesy of Jamie Street, Coleman and a superb solo effort EdenLocal

His assistant, Jim Nichols has been appointed caretaker manager for the visible future and everyone at the club is 100% behind Jim to ensure we're successful. In Jim's first match we gained a valuable point at Jarrow Roofing with Martyn Coleman grabbing 2 goals. The club are running a supporters coach to Guisborough Town on Saturday 12th November. 6th October deadline draws near As featured in the Communication in the Community show on Eden FM 107.5 a number of times this year, I was joined recently by Clare Strafford, the Community Support Officer who reviews and then processes the Community Fund applications at Eden District Council. The Eden Community Fund in 2016-2017 had £106,000 available in the pot for projects and events capable of delivering wide community benefit in Eden. There are two rounds of applications, the first was before the summer and after some successful applications, which I can share with you included Eden FM, there is currently £60,000 remaining. The closing date for the second and final round of community applications is 6th October. Can your organisation apply? Eden District Council welcomes applications from community and voluntary groups, parish and town councils, charities and social enterprises to deliver projects that benefit communities in Eden District. It cannot accept applications from individuals and to be eligible to apply to the Eden Community Fund, groups and organisations must have their own constitution (unless a parish council) and bank account with at least two unrelated signatories. What can the fund be used for? Only capital funding is available. Grants are available for community projects and events that benefit the residents of communities in Eden. Groups and organisations must demonstrate how their project or event will deliver wide benefit, contributing to the sustainability, vitality and well-being of Eden's communities.

Applications are invited to the Eden Community Fund under the following categories: 1. Community (outdoor) Amenities 2. Community Buildings 3. Community Enterprise 4. Supporting Communities 5. Community Events How much can you apply for? The minimum grant for categories 1-4 (above) is £500 and the maximum is £10,000. For community events, the minimum grant level is £200 and the maximum £5,000. Awards towards the maximum levels will be the exception and projects and events will need to demonstrate significant community need and match funding. There is a requirement for 20% match funding for all categories, although up to 10% can be in-kind. Please do not submit an application unless you have the required number of written quotes and estimates as it will not be accepted. Two written quotes or estimates must be submitted for each item of expenditure between £50 and £2,500 and three for each item over £2,500. As discussed at length on many occasions in the regular Tuesday show on Eden FM, Clare is there to help you. Clare can take you through the form and get you started or review your form before you submit it. First go to www.eden.gov.uk/eden-community-fund and have a look at the form. If you have any queries, you can give Clare a call on 01768 817817 or drop her an email at edencommunityfund@eden.gov.uk but don’t leave it to the last minute. As communicated in the radio show, there is no guarantee that there will be an EDC community fund available in 2017/2018. This money has to be used and Eden District Council want the community to have it!
