A warm welcome to our visitors this evening, their players and officials representing Bishop Auckland. There are a few additions to the side we played in the league on Boxing Day, which gave us our home league win of the season. We don’t actually have a match report or a Direct from the Dugout report today. In discussing the match, there wasn’t an awful lot to write about. With a half time score of 0 – 0, we had a few chances. Robertson smashed the bar with a volley, but that's about it for that half. Will Paul, the Man of the Match with the allimportant goal on 46 minutes, made sure we went through to the Cumberland Cup Final. It certainly had an impact on Netherhall, as they went out at the weekend and lifted themselves into fifth place and out of the relegation zone with an emphatic 121 win over Carlisle City Reserves. Meanwhile, the Ladies continue to do exceptionally well as they have also reached the Ladies Cumberland Cup Final after beating Workington Reds away 2 – 1. There is a full report on pages 16 and 17 by Kath Savage. With our match away to Billingham Synthonia postponed, Connor Shields and Kyle did get to stretch their legs in the 7 - 0 over at Ambleside in the Reserves, Connor getting a hat-trick and Kyle taking one. So, tonight’s match - what do we know about the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup? This is what I found in a reference via Wikipedia, Northern League reference. The League had an unusual sponsorship deal put in place by Brooks Mileson, owner of the Albany Group, who were its sponsors in 2003.
In that year, Mileson announced that he had created a trust which would continue to sponsor the league throughout his lifetime and that of his sons. In 2008, however, the league announced that this sponsorship had come to an end and it held a raffle to determine its next sponsor. Interested parties were invited to buy a stake in the raffle for £250. The winning stake was held by a local training company and the league, as a result, became the skill training Ltd Northern League from the 2008–09 season until the 2011–12 season. BISHOP AUCKLAND CLUB HISTORY It all started in 1882 when theological students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities whilst studying at Auckland Castle, home of the Bishop of Durham, formed a team known as Bishop Auckland Church Institute. A later dispute caused a breakaway team called Auckland Town to be formed in 1886/87 and it was from this upheaval that Bishop Auckland Football Club was eventually born Eight days after its formation, the club chose royal blue with white facings and subsequently the light and dark blue colours of the original Church Institute representing the colours of Oxbridge. Auckland Town was a founder member of the Northern League in 1889 but left after its first season before returning as Bishop Auckland in 1893. Between 1893 and 1988, the club won the league championship a record 19 times. The first championship was claimed in 1898/99 with the club going unbeaten in their league campaign, winning nine and drawing seven of their sixteen league matches. Success in national and local competitions often left the club with a backlog of league fixtures at the end of the season. In 1936/37 the team played 18 games in 18 days, without defeat, to finish runners-up. In 1937/38 the club ended up playing 14 games in 18 days, again finishing as runners-up, and in 1938/39 they played 10 games in 11 days to become champions. The most successful period in the Northern League came between 1947 and 1956 when the team never finished below second place. During this period they were champions seven times and runners-up on three occasions. Following the tragic Munich air disaster of 1958 when Manchester United lost so many talented players, three Bishop Auckland players went to assist the First Division champions. They were Derek Lewin, Warren Bradley, and Bobby Hardisty, who all played in United’s Central League side in March that year. Bradley, an England Amateur International, not only became a regular in United’s first team but also went on to play for his country at full international level. In the FA Amateur Cup, the Bishops record was without equal. No other club can match their number of wins, finals, and semi-final appearances. They were in the final 18 times, winning the cup on ten occasions including a record three times in a row in 1955, 1956 and 1957. The club were also semi-finalists on 27 occasions. When the competition ceased in 1974, the club was presented with a replica of the Amateur Cup in recognition of its outstanding record. In the FA Cup, the Club has played in the First Round Proper on a remarkable 23 occasions winning 10 times with memorable games against the likes of Sheffield United, Wolves, Carlisle United, Blackpool, Bury and Crewe. The best Cup run came in the 1954/55 season when, after beating Kettering Town 5-1 (home), Crystal Palace 4-2 (away), and Ipswich Town 3-0 (home) after a 2-2 draw in East Anglia, they were defeated 1-3 at home by York City in a thrilling Fourth Round tie. Two seasons earlier, a record attendance of 16,319 packed into Kingsway to see a Second Round defeat to Coventry City. In the FA Trophy the Club has reached the quarter-final stage three times in 1970, 1997 and 2000.
Unquestionably the most famous player to wear the famous ‘Two Blues’ shirt was Bobby Hardisty. In a glittering 21 year playing career, starting with an FA Amateur Cup semi -final appearance at the age of 17, he gained every conceivable amateur honour. Bob was in the British team at three Olympic Games, won 15 Amateur International caps for England, and also played for Middlesbrough, Hibernian and Manchester United reserves. He also played in six FA Amateur Cup Finals at Wembley, gaining three winners medals, and won six Northern League Championship medals in seven years. In 1988, almost a century after first joining the Northern League, the Bishops decided to enter the pyramid system via the Northern Premier League. It was the end of an era, but it was also the beginning of an exciting new phase in the club’s history as the team immediately gained promotion to the Premier Division, where they more than held their own for over a decade. The highest ever league placing was as Runners-up in the 1996/97 season At the end of the 2001/02 season the Club, now a limited company, moved away from Kingsway, home for 116 years, so that part of the ground that was shared with the local Cricket Club could be sold to help fund a new ground that would meet the now more demanding criteria for football stadia. The Club entered ground sharing agreements with a number of local clubs over the following 8 years. In 2002 the Two Blues suffered relegation for the first time in their long and distinguished history. Despite not finishing in a relegation place, they were demoted by the Northern Premier League on a ground technicality. They battled back, and found themselves in the Premier Division in 2004 following the restructuring of the non-league pyramid. However, relegation inevitably followed and so after a gap of 18 years, the Bishops’ returned to the Northern League for the 2006/07 season. After a considerable amount of complex negotiations a site for the new stadium was found and Heritage Park, with a capacity of just over 2,000 was officially opened by Sir John Hall on Sunday October 24th 2010 and hosted its first game against a Middlesbrough team shortly after watched by 1,341 spectators. Heritage Park hit full capacity (2,004) in the opening league match of the 2012/13 season against our current ground sharing partners Darlington 1883 in their first competitive game in the Northern League since reforming. 2015 has seen possibly the biggest news for quite some time in the history of the Club when Colin Rowell, an avid supporter of the Club for more than 70 years, left the bulk of his estate, worth more than £300,000 to the Club on his death at the age of 79 years, as a fitting tribute to Colin, his ashes were scattered on the Heritage Park pitch. The 2016/17 campaign saw the club finish a solid 8th position in the Northern League. The club progressed to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup eventually getting knocked out by exfootball league club Stockport County, this was Bishop’s best performance in the cup in the last 20 years.

COLIN MYERS (MANAGER) Colin was appointed team manager at the start of the season. He was Bishop’s manager for a four-year spell which brought success in the form of winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 2013 with a win over Spennymoor Town. Previously Assistant Manager at Blyth Spartans, Colin’s last role in football was as manager of fellow Northern League side Consett.

DION RAITT (COACH) Former Bishop player Dion returned to the Club as part of Colin’s management team at the beginning of this season. Dion has played for Gateshead and Newton Aycliffe. AMY-LEIGH SMITH (OSTEOPATH) Amy-Leigh graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2012 with a Master’s degree in Osteopathy. During her time at Brookes her passion for sport grew and Amy-Leigh’s love of working with athletes developed because of her involvement with the MCC’s Oxford Cricketing Centre of Excellence. ADAM McHUGH (GOALKEEPER) PREVIOUS CLUBS: St Mirren, West Auckland. Signed from West Auckland in February, Adam is an agile goalkeeper who commands his area. GARETH YOUNG (GOALKEEPER) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Consett, Tow law. An experienced keeper with a safe pair of hands who organises his defence well. AIDAN HART (DEFENCE) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Bishop Auckland St Mary’s.Aidan is another local lad who progressed through the Bishop Auckland St Mary’s ranks, he has made the right back position his own during the pre-season campaign. MICHAEL HOGANSON (DEFENCE) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Newcastle United, Derby County, Spennymoor Town. A good solid defender with plenty of pace to take the ball forward, Michael began his career with Newcastle United in the Under 18’s and Peter Beardsley’s reserves sides and signed for Derby County in 2012 and featured mainly in the Under 21 team whilst making 4 appearances in the Championship. Michael signed for Bishops from Spennymoor. THOMAS MARRON (DEFENCE) PREVIOUS CLUBS: West Auckland, Guisborough Town. Tommy joined the club from local rivals West Auckland in September 2017, he can play either central defence or central midfield, he offers organisation at the back and is calm in possession of the ball. LIBBY HASSAN (DEFENCE) PREVIOUS CLUBS: West Auckland, South Shields, Whitby Town Another recruit from local rivals West Auckland, Ibby has a wealth of experience above Northern League level having been at Whitby Town for 7 years.
STEPHEN TOBIN (DEFENCE) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Shildon, Newcastle Benfield, Dunston UTS. Stephen re-joined the club for his second spell at Bishop from Dunston UTS, Stephen is an old fashioned centre half who loves to defend. NIALL McGOLDRICK (Defence) Signed on loan from Whitby Town, Niall is a tall, commanding central defender who isn’t afraid of a strong tackle. Niall signed for Whitby on being released from Middlesbrough FC’s Academy where he made four UEFA Youth League appearances. JOHN JURY (MIDFIELD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Sunderland RCA, Shildon, Team Northumbria. Signed in September 2015 from Sunderland RCA, John is a tough tackling defender who can also play in midfield. SHAUN RYDER (MIDFIELD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Consett, Marske United. Shaun joined the club from Consett in October 2017, he has had an instant impact at the club with some very strong displays in the middle of the park, Shaun also chips in with his fair share of goals. STUART THOMPSON (MIDFIELD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Brandon. Stuart can play wide of the midfield down either side or just behind the front men. His pace and skill causes defences headaches. ALEX GOUNDRY (MIDFIELD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Bishop Auckland St Mary’s. Alex has progressed through the St Mary’s ranks to become a vital part of the Bishop Auckland squad. ANDREW JOHNSON (FORWARD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Shildon, Blyth Spartans, Darlington 1883, Spennymoor Town. Andrew is a firm favourite at Heritage Park. In his first spell with the club he was the League’s top scorer for two seasons. Last season he scored his 200th goal for the Club to become the all-time leading goal scorer for the club. AJ played for Darlington 1883 and Spennymoor Town before rejoining the Bishops. IAN WARD (FORWARD) PREVIOUS CLUBS: Esh Winning, Queen of South, Durham City, Spennymoor Town, Darlington 1883. Physically strong and good in the air, Ian joined Bishop’s from Spennymoor having previously played for Queen of the South, Esh Winning, Durham City and Darlington 1883. LUKE SULLIVAN (FORWARD) Signed on loan from South Shields to strengthen our attacking options, Luke has previously played for Consett where he scored 136 goals in 206 appearances over five years. Bishop Auckland Press Release – Darren Returns The Club today has confirmed the signing of midfielder Darren Richardson from neighbours West Auckland. The necessary forms have been sent to the Northern League this afternoon (9th March) in order for Darren to be eligible to play in tomorrow’s Northern League game at Consett. Manager Colin Myers said today “I am delighted to welcome Darren back to Heritage Park. He will strengthen our midfield with his energy and commitment”. Darren say’s “I am looking forward to renewing acquaintances with people both on and off the field at Heritage Park. As a local lad I enjoyed a good few years playing for Bishop before leaving for Darlington”. Darren previously played for Bishop between 2007 and 2012 when he left for Darlington before joining Shildon and then West Auckland. The Club wishes to thank West Auckland Manager Garry Forrest and officials for helping make the transfer process go through smoothly.

17/03/2018 Marske Utd 0 Stockton Town 2 – Buildbase FA Vase semi-final first leg Stockton might, just might be starting to dream of Wembley. There’s still a lot of football left in this semi-final, but it’s certainly advantage to the Anchors. At times the game was played in atrocious, near blizzard conditions. The win was based on rock-solid defence. For big chunks of the game – particularly in the first half - Marske pressed and kept on pressing; they were just unable to breach the Stockton defence. They did everything but score. The decisive moments came in the 12th and 42nd minute.Max Craggs delivered a sharp free kick into the Marske box and the ball flashed into the net after someone got a head on the ball. After initial confusion about who got the last touch, it was finally given as a Joshua Rowbotham own goal. And then just before half-time Craggs knocked the ball to Kevin Hayes who returned it back to Craggs and Fred Woodhouse was quickest to react to the Stockton No 8’s ball into the box to poke it in. The “visitors” had made the most of their two most clear-cut chances of the half. One word dominated my notes for the opening 45 minutes: “block”. Time and again Marske shots were blocked. Stockton as a team defended deep and in numbers. Centre backs Dale Mulligan and Tom Coulthard were particularly outstanding in thwarting Marske shots. And behind them, Michael Arthur gathered and parried everything else that got past them. Marske hit a purple patch around the 20-minute mark, with two shots blocked by the last line of defence and another shot hitting the post. Ten minutes later it was more of the same – a dangerous ball into the box by Curtis Round just evading Danny Earl and Andrew Stephenson and then shots by Craig Gott and Chay Liddle – one blocked and one just wide. In the dying seconds of the half, Stephenson worked some space on the left before setting Gott up, but his side-footed shot from 12 yards out went wide. It was a great chance for him to hit the target. The second half wasn’t dominated by Marske to quite the same extent as the first. A Hayes shot in the 53rd minute didn’t cause Marske keeper Robert Dean any problems and then a minute later he had to be at full stretch to save another shot. Around the 65-minute mark the game developed into the classic end-to-end game. Round took it past and round the Stockton defence and tried to pull it back to set up a team-mate for a shot only for Arthur to cut off the pass. Seconds later the Marske winger had a shot deflected for a corner. Stockton went straight up the other end with Woodhouse breaking through the middle. He chose to pass left to Jamie Owens instead of to his right where he had two men up against one defender and the attack broke down. Markse in turn broke back and Earl was one-on-one with Arthur and the Stockton stopper made a crucial save to block the No. 9’s shot. In the last 10 minutes the Stockton defence held their nerve and held their line: A James Fairley shot taken low down by Arthur; one Glen Butterworth cross was cleared by Dale Mulligan, a second blocked by Nathan Mulligan and then a follow-up shot by the No. 4 saved by Arthur who made the final save of the match from Stephenson deep into added time. 2-0, but It’s still all to play for in a week’s time.
Billy’s Blog A poor display in the semi-final of the Cumberland Cup took us to the Final at Brunton Park timed for May 8th. Tonight, we are involved in the quarter final of the League Cup.

We hope for a better performance, however, we would settle for a similar result. Bishop Auckland will be a much bigger test, although their league form has taken a dip of late. To be involved in two cup competitions at this stage of the season is a big plus. It does mean, however, every game until now and when the last ball is kicked, it’s imperative we get behind the team in an effort to avoid relegation. At last week’s game against Netherhall, I met up with one of my ex-players, Keith Glover. He was a clever defender; reminds me so much of Tyler Bowman. A left sided player, difficult to get past and rarely giving the ball away. In 1981 we were fortunate to have a team which was probably as strong throughout as any team to represent the club, culminating in going out of the 2nd round proper of the FA cup at Doncaster Rovers 38 years ago and it seems like yesterday! The reason for his visit was his son was playing and he gave a real battling performance for his club. With Saturday’s Northern League fixture off, I took the opportunity to watch our Academy side give their all for the club.

Workington Reds 1-2 Penrith AFC Ladies Workington proved a “tough nut to crack” in this Cumberland County Womens Cup Semi Final tie. Penrith started well and dominated much of the possession however Reds were well organised and resilient in their defending. Time and again they frustrated Penrith and the stalemate remained at the break. HT 0-0 Penrith eventually broke the deadlock 2 minutes onto the 2nd half when Heather Fawkes was on hand to sweep the ball home from a Nat Broad corner. Penrith continued to “ask questions” of the Reds defence and extended their lead on 61 mins when Nat Broad found space between the Reds Central defenders and lobbed the ball over the keeper .

An incisive Reds move saw them slice through the Penrith defence and they reduced the arrears with this CARLISLE UNITED v PENRITH AFC fine goal on 79 mins. With the match finely balanced at 1-2 it made for a Thursday 26 April 2018 at 18:30 frantic and nervy last 11 mins. Penrith maintained their Creighton Rugby Club, Sycamore Lane, composure to see out the game and claimed a place Parkland in the County Cup final. The lads faced Langwathby today in conditions which can only be described as Arctic. We had blizzards & Sunshine but it wasn’t a hot and cold performance from the boys. They were superb throughout and we fielded a very young side today with a full debut from Chris Mills. We scored after 10 minutes with Luke Hunter latching onto a mistake from the centre half and made no mistake to take give us a deserved lead. The lads created numerous chances but the 1st half ended with the Academy a goal up. 2nd half was the same thing. A fantastic defensive performance from the Marshall bros, Harry Ewbank & Chris Mills, with other top performances from Kerr, Addis, Askins & Clifford in the centre of the park. Hall & Hunter were a handful up top but Langwathby did equalise to make it interesting. However, up stepped Luke Hunter to get the winner 5 minutes from time with his 3rd goal in 2 games. There were so many top drawer performances today from the lads but the Man of the Match has to go to Chris Mills who was outstanding on his Academy debut and at only 16 has a bright future. đ&#x;‘?đ&#x;‘?đ&#x;‘?đ&#x;‘? News Item from Northern League FA re-structuring of non-league football - 15/03/2018 The Football Association’s proposed re-structuring of the non-league system was presented to the league’s annual general meeting at the end of last season and posted on the league’s website. In response to a number of recent enquiries about the effect of the re-structuring on the Ebac Northern League (Division One is at Step Five and Division Two at Step Six), here are the potential scenarios to be implemented by the FA. The changes come into force for the 2018/19 season. They are: A new Step 3 and a new Step 4 league to be formed; Step 3 divisions to play with 22 teams, Step 4 and Step 5 with 20 teams and Step 6 teams to have no more than 20 teams in them. Therefore for the 2018/19 season both divisions in the Ebac Northern League to operate with 20 teams. The highest placed club in each of the 14 Step 5 leagues in England will be automatically promoted. In addition to those 14, another 12 second-placed teams will also be promoted to Step 4. These 12 clubs will be the highest placed teams based on average points per games during the playing season. This means that potentially up to two teams from the first division could be promoted out of the league at the end of next season. Three teams will continue to be relegated from division one and three promoted from division two. Clubs in three “feeder” leagues will be eligible for promotion to the Ebac Northern League – the Wearside League, the Northern Alliance and the North Riding Football League. Clubs at this level will still have to meet the appropriate ground grading criteria to be promoted. At the end of the season the FA will also decide on any lateral movements of clubs between leagues at the same level in the national system. An EGM (extra-ordinary general meeting) will be held by the league on April 8 to discuss the league’s recent appeal to the FA and the impact of the FA restructuring. Below are the various scenarios for the league:? Scenario 1: 1 club relegated from step 4. 2 clubs promoted to step 4. For Division One: Up to 4 clubs would be relegated to step 6. For Division Two: If there are no promotion candidates from step 7 (the feeder leagues) two clubs will be relegated to step 7. We see a shop leave the high street, well in this case it was King Street in 2014 and that shop for many years had been trading and serving the community through selling stationary an ink cartridges, but something else it did on two floors, with its metal winding stair case, was it made banners and posters and for someone who just wanted to step off the street and get some photocopying done, it was so convenient. The business changed hands. It rebranded and as part of its new brand, it moved out of the high street location, possibly as a saving. A lot of businesses do this and I’ve worked with a few. For Chris Murray, at that time, in order to set out on his dream to have his own business, he saw a gap in the market of opportunity. Chris had an idea that would fill a hole and the potential walk in trade that had existed for all those years was still there; he had to move fast.
Opportunity in business is sometimes born out of convenience or inconvenience and one late night he was sitting at home on his computer pondering this new career. He looks back and remembers, maybe it was that last glass of red wine that just nudged him with that extra push of courage, which meant he clicked the enter button when it said ‘please confirm your payment’ and Penrith Posters was created. Why Penrith Posters? Well what he had bought was a secondhand scanner printer and Chris, like many small business owners when they start out, was already working full time, so in the evening he was working on his new idea. The kitchen table became his desk, so he set off designing and making posters. It was a start, but it wasn’t on the high street. By 2015 it was in Friargate, two doors away from Eden FM Radio, who set up and switched on their new studio in May 2015. There was a natural link in marketing and the need for marketing materials.

The down side of Friargate on that side of road is there is no fibre broadband. Chris on moving to his premises got his phone line, but only had the basic broadband which meant loading digital images was not easy. He was balancing two jobs, working from his kitchen; working during the day time until early afternoon, then he would do evening shifts at Halfords and work the weekends there too. Eden FM shared the same trials with broadband loading music and even with the BT telephone exchange just separated by a wall and the car park of Eden FM. As Chris found it a year on after being at Friargate, the promises of it happening from BT simply weren’t delivered. To take his business to the next level, he took an enormous leap of faith. I’m pleased he did and many of you would have seen the support in the Eden Local and you

We have worked in securing contracts together and recommending each other and at the start of 2017, Chris secured the lease on 4 Market square, Penrith, right in the heart of the town. He changed his working week, increased his hours for his own business whilst still working evenings from 4.30pm and still working Saturdays and Sundays at Halfords. It’s not the final chapter, as I see this business just growing and growing, because Chris has such a great work ethic and dedication, which in February saw him finally take the plunge and put all of his working hours into his business.
